Image Source: Amazon The Goldbergs, a hilarious and heartwarming sitcom, charmed audiences for ten seasons with its relatable portrayal of family life in the 1980s. The show, inspired by creator Adam F. Goldberg’s own childhood, offered a nostalgic trip back in time, centered around a younger version of Adam and his colorful family. A key ingredient to the show’s long-running success was Wendi McLendon-Covey’s unforgettable performance as the endearingly overbearing matriarch, Beverly Goldberg. McLendon-Covey, who now stars in the NBC comedy St. Denis Medical, found rich inspiration for her portrayal of Beverly directly from the source: Adam Goldberg’s actual mother. While the show was still in production, she shared how access to the Goldberg family’s home movies, provided by Adam himself, was instrumental in shaping her beloved character. Back in Action is headlined by Cameron Diaz’s comeback after 11 years away from acting, but Netflix’s most viewed weekend premiere in nearly three years is also Seth Gordon’s return to feature filmmaking.
Gordon — who’s most known as the director behind hit comedies such as Four Christmases (2008), Horrible Bosses (2011) and Identity Thief (2013) — hasn’t made a feature film since 2017’s Baywatch, and while his four films have averaged a box office gross of nearly $183 million each, his absence coincides with the comedy genre’s steady decline at the box office and widespread disappearance from major studio development slates. Gordon doesn’t have the definitive answer for why comedy is no longer the dominant force it once was at multiplexes, but he speculates that it could be a result of the hectic political climate that’s been in effect since 2017.
“[2017] was the time when comedy started to die down.

These days, the latest installments of the world’s most popular franchises boast budgets that rival those of small countries. Your average amateur can’t even hope to compete. Except sometimes they can — for viewers, reviews and even awards.
5 Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation
Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation is the rare fan film that not only has a Rotten Tomatoes score, it’s 100 percent. That’s all the more impressive considering it was shot over the course of seven years in the ‘80s by teenagers in Mississippi, meaning the actors visibly age from scene to scene. The shot-for-shot remake fell into the hands of Eli Roth, who arranged for its screening at a film festival in 2002, bringing it to a wide audience. It was even mentioned in an episode of The Goldbergs, which is the true measure of success.

It’s time to take NBC‘s comedic sitcom St. Denis Medical off life support because the show is getting a Season 2 renewal! Fans of the series created by Superstore and American Auto’s Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer have been stuck in the waiting room while hoping for more episodes of the laugh-out-loud comedy, and today, news outlets are ready to give them the good news!
St. Denis Medical takes place in an underfunded, understaffed Pregon hospital for a mockumentary-style sitcom. The show places audiences in the scrubs of determined doctors and nurses who work tirelessly to treat patients while holding tightly to their tolerance and humanity. Anyone who’s ever worked in the medical field or experienced an extended hospital stay knows how stressful a hospital environment can be, and the staff of St. Denis Medical do their best to keep the unpredictable environment safe, light-hearted, and functioning.

St. Denis Medical broke through in a big way when it debuted on NBC in the fall, and the network issued some exciting news on Tuesday morning:
St. Denis Medical Season 2 is a go.
The mockumentary is NBC’s first scripted renewal for the 2025-26 TV season. Make of that what you will.
(NBC)
The freshman drama averages just under 4 million viewers and has a 0.5 rating in the demo, proving that the broadcast networks still have some life left.
NBC teases that the series has reached 21.4 million viewers to date, which is astounding, but it doesn’t hold much water when the network doesn’t break it down.
The Live + 7 numbers are enough to keep it on the air for several years.

"Stranger Things" isn't the only show keeping the fervent spirit of the '80s alive, because "The Goldbergs" acts as a giant love letter to the decade that birthed such national treasures as "ThunderCats" and "Garbage Pail Kids." Loosely based on showrunner Adam F. Goldberg's own life, the sitcom follows his family's adventures (and misadventures) in everyday scenarios that unfolded across 10 seasons between 2013 and 2023. "The Goldbergs" cast features more than a handful of recognizable names, such as Jeff Garlin and Stephen Tobolowsky, not to mention Patton Oswalt using his recognizable voice, but it's sometimes difficult to pinpoint exactly where we have seen these actors before.
Don't stress, though, since that's why we're here -- to figure out the notable shows and films where you might have seen the cast of "The Goldbergs" before. Now, that doesn't mean their entire filmographies will be covered from top to bottom, because some...

In The Masked Singer season 12, singer and actress Aj Michalka placed third as Strawberry Shortcake, and she has some exciting career updates. Emmy-nominated duo Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna are teaming up to bring an acclaimed Australian comedy to American audiences with Laid. After getting her start writing on the likes of Pepper Ann and Malcolm in the Middle, Khan became a breakout creative force with Fresh Off the Boat, having gone on to also create Young Rock and direct the hit rom-com Always Be My Maybe and horror-comedy Totally Killer. McKenna first found success working on Will & Grace as a writer and story editor before going on to work on everything from The Goldbergs to Ghosted.
Laid also marks a reunion for Khan and McKenna, who previously worked together on Khan's first created show Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, led by Krysten Ritter. Ruby Yao (Stephanie Hsu), the protagonist of the Peacock comedy “Laid,” is variously described as “selfish,” “a nightmare,” “the worst person I have ever met” and belonging “in jail.” Hsu’s performance and Ruby’s characterization as a whole are indeed intensely off-putting, in ways both intentional and not. But Ruby’s karmic comeuppance in this series, adapted by sitcom veterans Nahnatchka Khan (“Fresh off the Boat”) and Sally Bradford McKenna (“The Goldbergs”) from an Australian show of the same name, doesn’t affect her directly. Instead, everyone she’s ever slept with starts to die — often in outlandish ways, always in the order she had sex with them.
This morbid premise evokes the late, great “Lovesick.” But unlike that British series, in which the hero’s Sti leads him to revisit past relationships, the heightened stakes of “Laid” present a tonal hurdle the eight-episode season proves unable to surmount.

The American education system has a rather regrettable take on sex-ed: “If you have sex you will die.” The trope has been mined for comedy before, but few shows take the premise as seriously as Laid. The romantic comedy series starring Stephanie Hsu lands on Peacock this week with its darkly funny premise. Hsu gets another nuanced and exciting role to continue her ascent. Meanwhile, co-star Zosia Mamet delivers her funniest performance since Girls. Together, they lift the comedy series thanks to their chemistry and zany performances.

Wendi McLendon-Covey is a very funny woman. That’s a statement backed up by facts. She starred as Beverly in ABC’s “The Goldbergs” for 10 seasons — a runtime that seems downright shocking in an era dominated by two to three season hits — and has starred in every kind of buzzy comedy from mainstream blockbusters like “Bridesmaids” to ambitious critical darlings like “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” This is all to say that McLendon-Covey knows comedy.
And right now she’s frustrated by it.
“I want to choose my words carefully. I’m an enthusiastic TV watcher and I love comedies. But can we take big swings again?” McLendon-Covey asked TheWrap. “Audiences are getting bored, and they are way more sophisticated than we think they are.”
McLendon-Covey cited Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s 2009 Comedy Central show “Broad City” as one of the “top five funniest things I’ve ever seen.

It's the year 2024, and we're still trying to get justice for Lizzie McGuire, even in the face of other sitcoms of her era making comebacks. Well, the latest news out of Disney+ revealed another revival of a nostalgic 2000s fan-favorite TV show, and I can't help but feel frustrated.
On Dec. 13, Disney+ shared the unexpected announcement that Malcolm in the Middle will be returning with four all-new episodes with Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek set to reprise their roles. (No word yet on additional cast returns.) The cast members each recorded videos to announce the truly surprising but equally thrilling news with fans.
In addition to Muniz, Cranston, and Kaczmarek returning as Malcolm, Hal, and Lois, Malcolm in the Middle's four revival episodes come from original series creator Linwood Boomer and will we each be directed by Ken Kwapis, who directed 19 episodes between seasons 1-5.

Some funny actors can go a lifetime without being cast in a hit sitcom. Others get that golden opportunity then throw it away thanks to a stupid foot inserted into a stupid mouth. Here are 5 comedians who scored big in situation comedy, only to get fired for saying something ridiculously dumb…
1 Roseanne Barr
The highly rated return of Roseanne was a feel-good comeback story until its lead comedian took to Twitter one night and burned it all to the ground. All it took was a tweet in which Roseanne compared Valerie Jarrett, a Black senior adviser to Barack Obama, to “if muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.”
ABC immediately canceled the show, although it was later resurrected without Barr as The Conners. That didn’t sit well with Barr, who accused former costar Sara Gilbert of stabbing her in the back after she tweeted, “This is incredibly...

Against larger Hollywood trends towards embracing cultural identity, Jewish characters on TV are still depicted as hiding or playing down their Jewishness, according to a new study from USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center’s Media Impact Project.
The study, undertaken with the support of the Jewish Institute for Television and Cinema Hollywood Bureau, also confirmed that “Jewface” really does exist, noting that only about half of Jewish characters are played by confirmed Jewish actors. It also pointed out that Jewish actresses are 21 percent less likely to be cast as Jewish characters than their male counterparts are.
The study is the first of its kind to focus on Jewish representation since 1999 and predates the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel and ensuing war in Gaza, which has led to an explosive 60 percent increase in antisemitic hate crimes. While St. Denis Medicals blend of workplace comedy and medical drama might be a fresh new concept, the sitcom is full of familiar faces. NBCs new sitcom St. Denis Medical follows the staff of the eponymous hospital as they attempt to keep the struggling institution running smoothly. St. Denis Medical is a workplace mockumentary sitcom that takes the premise of Scrubs and brings the style of The Office and Abbott Elementary to the project. This results in a sitcom that feels both original and familiar at the same time thanks to St. Denis Medicals added medical drama.

Bob Odenkirk couldnt have been more perfect for Saul Goodman, but three different actors also played him in Breaking Bads universe. Very few actors are as inextricably attached to a role as Odenkirk is with Saul; its like James Gandolfini with Tony Soprano or Bryan Cranston with Walter White. Sauls early episodes in Breaking Bad made great use of Odenkirks comedic talents, but as the series went on and the character was developed a lot more and especially after he was given his own spin-off show this role also introduced the world to Odenkirks untapped abilities as a dramatic actor.
Across Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, outside of a couple of isolated flashbacks, Jimmy McGill was mostly only played by Odenkirk. A couple of younger actors were brought in to briefly play the character at different stages of his life, but Odenkirk was never too far away from the...

“The Office,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Abbott Elementary” and now “St. Denis Medical,” the latest in a line of television workplace mockumentary comedies. Mentioning these previous titles shouldn’t be a knock against “St. Denis,” as it feels like it was designed to purposefully coast on these titles’ previously established rhythms, ensembles, dynamics and storylines. It’s a gentle, familiar-feeling show, and while it really works when it finds spiky, surprising and even uncomfortable ruffles to the formula, it plays pretty well when it’s just pulling it off too.
To describe the show’s world is as simple as saying “‘Modern Family’ but the family is doctors,” or “‘Scrubs’ but they’re aware of the camera.” The Emmy-nominated Allison Tolman (“Fargo”) leads an ensemble of medical professionals as our Leslie Knope-esque overachieving supervising nurse Alex.

There was a second Breaking Bad spinoff after Better Call Saul that hardly anyone watched, Slippin Jimmy and theres a very good reason why hardly anyone watched it. Ever since Better Call Saul ended with an equally satisfying series finale as its predecessor, theres been a lot of talk about what another series in the Breaking Bad universe could look like. The producers could make a prequel about Gus Frings rise to power, a sequel about Jesse hiding out in Alaska and trying to avoid being detected, or an original story set in the same universe.
The possibilities are endless for a new installment in the Breaking Bad franchise. Both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul rank among the greatest TV shows ever made the latter may have even managed to top the former, against all odds so the bar has been set very high for a new show set in this universe.

A hilarious and heartfelt animated series, Kiff centers around the titular anthropomorphic red squirrel, and while fans love her, they're curious about what her real name is. Created by Lucy Havens and Nic Smal, Kiff premiered in 2023 on the Disney Channel. The show chronicles the everyday life of young Kiff and her best friend Barry, a rabbit, as they get up to various misadventures. Season 1 earned positive reviews for its family-friendly messages about friendship, honesty, and learning from mistakes.
A big draw for young audiences is the protagonist herself. Kiff is easily the most exuberant and happy-go-lucky of all the animals and various creatures who live in Table Town, the mountainous island where the show takes place. As a much more mellow character, Barry is the perfect foil to Kiff, and that's what makes their adventures so much fun. In the Disney Channel show, Kiff is one of the only characters with a zanier name,...

Though no one has been confirmed, several possible actors could replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Englund portrayed Kreuger in eight different feature film installments of the Elm Street franchise, as well as the television show, Freddy's Nightmares. Though Englund has retired from acting as Freddy, due to his age and the role demands, no other actor is yet set to replace the legend. There hasn't been an official update to the franchise in over a decade, with Englund's last appearance as Krueger being a guest role in The Goldbergs in 2018.
Unlike other slasher killers, like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger speaks a lot, giving him quite the personality, full of iconic one-liners. This means finding a replacement for the villain is difficult, since fans of the franchise have a very clear idea of Freddy's personality. Freddy's personality is also established to...

Over a year later, Sean Giambrone opens up about whether he would be open to stepping back in time and returning to The Goldbergs in a potential revival. Created by Adam F. The Hatfields and McCoys have nothing on the feuding kinfolk in the Southern-fried soap, The Chicken Sisters! A comfort-food adaptation of Kj Dell’Antonia’s bestseller about two colorful restaurant families at war has the sass of the 2020 novel (a Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club pick!) and all the staples of a Hallmark hit: small town, big heart, hunky fellas and strong-willed women. Oh, and a ton of humor. “I’m a Gilmore Girls stan,” comedy-trained showrunner Annie Mebane offers. “And I wanted that sort of cozy feeling where people are witty in the way real people are witty, not working overtime to make a joke happen.” With Dell’Antonia’s tale as the main ingredient, Mebane and fellow executive producer Bradley Gardner have whipped up a celebration of sisterhood with more kick than spiked sweet tea. The book is set in Kansas, but the series takes place in fictional Southern...

ABC's The Goldbergs is a loose biographical retelling of Adam F. Goldberg's early years growing up in the 1980s here's what each character looks like compared to the real Goldberg family. From the first season of The Goldbergs, series creator, Adam F. Goldberg (who the main character is based on) cued audiences in on some of the more carefree moments of adolescence. The show even provides footage at the end of each episode, along with the occasional interview, of the true story that inspired the plot. Viewers get to see the real Goldberg family and gain insight into how the show matches the truth.
Since the real Adam Goldberg included plenty of home footage in The Goldbergs over the years, audiences can easily connect the dots between how the characters and the real Goldbergs act and react. That being said, the clips are from a 1980s camcorder in a family home,...
