- Star Butterfly is a queen in training from Mewni, another dimension. After her disruptive and destructive behavior, she is sent to Earth and meets Marco, a kid who likes karate and nachos. - The protagonist Star Butterfly is a magical princess from the dimension of Mewni, and the heiress to the throne of the Butterfly Kingdom. On her 14th birthday, Star is granted possession of her family's magic wand and gains access to its magical powers. But due to being under-trained in the use of magic, she accidentally sets fire to her family's castle.
Her parents decide to send Star to Earth, where they believe that she can study at a safer environment. Star poses as a foreign exchange student and starts attending Echo Creek Academy. She quickly befriends her classmate Marco Diaz, and is invited to move in the Diaz family house as a long-term guest. Star is followed on Earth by the would-be conqueror Ludo Avarius and his army. Star gains on-hands experience in using magic while having to fight Ludo and other enemies.
By season 2, Star's wand is damaged and defective. However, Star starts learning to cast magic without the use of wands. During the season, Star is reluctant to conform to her family's standards of behavior. During the season finale, the immortal villain Toffee manages to defeat the combined forces of the Magic High Commission (a council of powerful magic users) and the high chancellor Lekmet sacrifices his own life in order to heal some of his fallen allies. With Mewni in danger, Star is summoned back home to participate in the conflict.
Season 3 is set mostly in Mewni, where the conflicts continue. Marco feels depressed without Star and repeatedly travels to Mewni in search of her. He eventually decides to move there in the long-term, posing as a foreign exchange student at first. Late in the season, Star becomes the acting queen, as her mother (the Queen regnant) is missing-in-action following her latest battle, and their villainous kinswoman Meteora Butterfly is attacking the kingdom. Star resolves the crisis, but abdicates the throne in favor of her kinswoman Eclipsa Butterfly (Meteora's mother, and a deposed Queen regnant in her own right).
At the start of Season 4, Star searches for her missing mother, while Eclipsa makes a number of questionable political decisions. Star's mother is suffering from amnesia, but is slowly recovering her memories. Eclipsa's attempts at reform increasingly alienate part of the kingdom's population.
Late in the season, the Magic High Commission successfully deposes Eclipsa. Star's mother convinces Eclipsa to abdicate the throne in her favor, after promising to ensure that Eclipsa and her family will not be killed. A decision which she is not actually in a position to enforce, since her allies have their own agendas. Star initially flees to safety with Eclipsa, but is then tasked with a mission to destroy magic itself. The act wipes out the Magic High Commission and a number of other magic users, but accidentally merges the Earth and Mewni into a single planet. Star and Marco reunite and the series ends.
