Daron Nefcy originally came up with the idea for the show about a girl named Star with an overhyped imagination of being a princess, which interfered with the people around her. Nefcy pitched the idea to Disney and they insisted she change it. Nefcy then made Star an actual princess from a different dimension living on Earth, which became the premise for the final version of the show.
Before the series officially premiered, it was renewed for season 2.
According to Daron Nefcy, Star is based on Sailor Moon.
The line "totally, totally, totally" is often used by Eden Sher during rehearsal. The writers thought this was very much like Star, so they started scripting it in the show.
According to her Tumblr, creator Daron Nefcy drew the first concept drawing of Star Butterfly in 2008.
