On 1999’s “Audition,” Miike said he still believes the film to be “terribly violent” despite not having “set out to make a violent film.” “It became a violent movie as a result of the main character and working with actors who wanted to release this kind of feeling. I wanted to support actors to do more — if you want violence, just please go ahead.”

The indie drama “Anora” surprised audiences by clinching Best Picture at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards, marking a significant moment in this year’s film awards season. Distributed by Neon and previously awarded the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the film saved its most prestigious win for the event’s finale at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar.
The ceremony, hosted by Chelsea Handler for the third consecutive year, highlighted both established talents and breakthrough performances across film and television. The win positions “Anora” as a strong contender for upcoming major awards, including potential nominations from the Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America.
In a notable moment, Jon M. Chu won Best Director for “Wicked,” a meaningful victory following his recent Oscar nomination snub. The Broadway musical adaptation also secured wins for Costume Design and Production Design.

Though Toranaga does not control the wind, Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor that plays him in Shōgun, holds the forecast for the series’ Season 2 in the palm of his hand.
Speaking with Deadline along with series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks backstage Friday at the Critics Choice Awards, where the historical drama series sliced its way to a leading four wins, Sanada, who won tonight for Best Actor in a Drama Series, teased his desires for Season 2.
“In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a Shōgun yet. So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope.”
The show, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name and set in 1600s feudal Japan, follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s fight against his enemies on the Council of Regents. His plans for unyielding power is complicated by the arrival of John Blackthrone (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked...

After two LA wildfires-related delays, the Critics Choice Awards were handed out on Friday evening in Los Angeles. The E! Network telecast was hosted by Chelsea Handler and featured a strong number of Oscar and SAG Awards television contenders hoping for a last-minute boost. For the most part, the Cca spread the love with “Anora” taking Best Picture despite not winning any other awards. “Shōgun” won four statues including Best Drama Series, Best Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), Best Supporting Actress (Moeka Hoshi), and Best Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano) in a Drama Series.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards selected Neon’s Anora as its Best Picture on Friday, boosting the fortunes of Sean Baker’s indie pic that started its journey by winning Cannes’ Palme d’Or last spring.
Anora had come into the night with seven nominations but had come up short until the final category was announced at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Up next this weekend for Anora to keep the momentum going are the DGA Awards and PGA Awards, where it is up for both top prizes Saturday.
The Critics Choice Awards, which were hosted for a third year in a row by Chelsea Handler, has traditionally been a good Oscar bellwether. Last year, eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer scored a leading eight wins here including the marquee Best Picture prize that Anora just snagged.

“Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” each triumphed with three wins at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday night. However, it was “Anora” that claimed the best picture prize at this year’s ceremony.
The Neon release entered the race with seven nominations, including best actress for Mikey Madison and best director and original screenplay for Sean Baker. But ultimately, “Anora” walked away with the coveted best picture award, and nothing more.
Meanwhile, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu, who wasn’t nominated in the Academy Awards’ best director category, beat out several Oscar nominees to win the best director honor at the Critics Choice Awards. “I’m going to win that Oscar!” Chu said jokingly on stage.
The film-acting categories had less surprises, as the ceremony handed best actress to Demi Moore (“The Substance”), best actor to Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), best supporting actress to Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia...

“So unexpected, so unexpected,” said “Anora” director Sean Baker from the stage of the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica on Friday night.
Baker wasn’t alone in his surprise. His madcap comedy-drama-adventure took home the evening’s final award for Best Picture – without winning a single award anywhere else during the ceremony, losing in the six other categories in which it was nominated. Last year, “Oppenheimer” won eight total awards as part of its pre-Oscars Critics Choice sweep. In 2023, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” led with five wins.
Though “Anora” snagged the top prize, no film dominated in win totals. The award hauls were split between “Wicked,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez” with three awards each and “Conclave,” “A Real Pain” and “Challengers” with two each.

“Nosferatu,” “Wicked” and “Conclave” have won the feature film awards at the Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out on Thursday night in Los Angeles.
“Conclave” won in the Excellence in Contemporary Film category, “Wicked” won in Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film and “Nosferatu” won in Excellence in Period Film, the CDG category that most closely corresponds to the Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
In the last 15 years, one of the winners at the CDG Awards has gone on to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design nine times, with the guild’s period film winner taking six of those awards and the sci-fi/fantasy winner taking three. Only once in that period, with “Little Women” in 2020, has the Oscar winner not been a CDG nominee.

Dressed to the nines and ready to shine, the 2025 Costume Designers Guild Awards (Cdga) rolled out their vibrant carpet on Thursday in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated outstanding achievements in costume design across film, television, short-form, and costume illustration. Among the glittering nominees were four of the five Oscar contenders for Best Costume Design: Conclave, Gladiator II, Nosferatu, and Wicked. Notably absent from the Cdga list was the Academy Award-nominated A Complete Unknown.

Ahead of a busy weekend on the awards circuit — the Critics Choice Awards, the PGA Awards, the DGA Awards — a veritable Hollywood who’s-who gathered on Thursday to celebrate the American Film Institute’s 10 finest films and television shows of 2024 in a luncheon event rescheduled from a month due to the devastating series of fires that ravaged the Los Angeles area.

Are the 2025 Critics Choice Awards about to be a repeat of the recent Emmys and Golden Globes?
Television awards faves Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer are expected to dominate Friday’s ceremony, which was delayed twice in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Season 3 of Max’s laugh riot Hacks is predicted to walk away with four trophies: comedy series, comedy actress (Jean Smart), comedy supporting actress (Hannah Einbinder), and comedy supporting actor (Paul W. Downs). In fact, the only category Hacks is expected to lose is Best Comedy Actor … because it doesn’t compete there. Instead, our odds-makers believe Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) had better start preparing a speech.
Likewise, Season 1 of FX’s historical epic Shōgun has four races locked up, per our rankings: drama series, drama actress (Anna Sawai), drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and drama supporting actor (Tadanobu Asano). The remaining statuette is Best Drama Supporting Actress,...

And quite a career it has been. Bates had done plenty of guest shots on TV and appeared in smaller film roles when she got her signature role in Misery, playing a novelist’s (James Caan...

The Super Bowl is by far the biggest TV event of the year. But for movie studios eager to capitalize on the enormous power of the NFL as a marketing platform for upcoming blockbusters, it’s not the only game in town, and sports-related opportunities to impress hard-to-reach audiences don’t begin and end there.
Inevitably, there’s considerable focus on which movie ads drop during the Super Bowl, which takes place Feb. 9 this year and will be broadcast by Fox. That’s in part because of the lofty price tag associated with advertising during the game, with reports the network is commanding $7 million on average per 30-second spot.
The opportunities to capitalize on the NFL’s unparalleled popularity, however, don’t stop there. And marketers have become increasingly savvy about leveraging excitement around the playoffs, including this weekend’s league-championship games, which also promise to be an enormous attraction.

Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón has made Oscar history. The titular Emilia Pérez star was just nominated for Best Actress, making her the first openly transgender performer ever nominated in the category. She stars in the musical as a Mexican drug lord who undergoes a gender transition but can’t fully escape her past.
This nomination is historic, but it didn’t come as a surprise. Beginning at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Gascón and costars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz were jointly named Best Actress. Emilia Pérez was then acquired by Netflix, which released it in theaters on Nov. 1 and on its streaming platform on Nov. 13.
Since then, the film has been enthusiastically embraced by awards groups. It received 10 Golden Globe nominations, the most ever for a comedy or musical, including one for Gascón. It went on to win four of those awards, including the top prize for best film.

The 2025 finalists for the USC Libraries Scripter Awards have been announced by the USC Libraries. The annual event is held in honor of the writers of the year’s most accomplished film and episodic series adaptations, as well as the authors of the works on which they are based.
For example, on the film side, recent Golden Globes Best Screenplay winner Peter Straughan is nominated alongside Robert Harris, the author of “Conclave.” The finalist can also be the same person on both ends, with “Baby Reindeer” creator/star Richard Gadd being nominated for adapting his play of the same name into the Emmy-winning hit Netflix series.

Cosmo Jarvis, star of FX’s smash hit period series “Shōgun,” has landed a role in Guy Ritchie’s next film, “Wife & Dog.”
The Brit joins a heady lineup of names already confirmed for the feature, first announced by Variety last year and set to see Ritchie return to the colourful, backstabbing world of the British upper classes (doubling down on a subject he recently explored in “The Gentleman” film and TV series). The Best Film Ensemble category at the Screen Actors Guild Awards can occasionally be a tough one to predict. Gold Derby’s pundits erroneously thought that 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood would prevail over Parasite, while 2016’s Hidden Figures was correctly chosen by only one of the editors, experts, or top 24 users — combined. Well, this year’s top race looks to be less of a head-scratcher and more of a coronation, as Gold Derby’s 2025 SAG Awards predictions overwhelmingly favor Wicked to win with 17/10 odds. Talk about popular!
The SAG nominations were announced on Jan. 8, with Wicked leading all other films with five bids: Best Ensemble, Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), Best Supporting Actor (Jonathan Bailey), and Best Stunt Ensemble. Silo season 2 comes to an end in an explosive, deliciously frustrating way. Here’s our spoiler-free review of Silo season 2 episode 10.
It’s hard to pull off a good finale these days. The TV landscape is full of excellent series and it’s hard to stand out and even harder to convince your audience to hang on for a couple of years and wait for another season.
Silo season 2 has had a lot of ups and downs. There have been some incredible individual episodes – episode 4 in particular – but the series has also struggled in finding a balance between the different storylines. With two more seasons on the way, the finale has to prove that showrunner Graham Yost and his cast and crew know what they’re doing and this is all leading to something worthy of our patience.
In all honesty, I was nervous sitting down to watch episode 10. Sure,...

The nominations announcement of the PGA Awards 2025 made for a tough morning for the “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing” Oscar campaigns in particular.
Because the Producers Guild of America uses the same system as the Academy to determine its nominees for Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — a preferential ballot with 10 slots— it is seen overall as the most accurate precursor for Best Picture. In fact, its nominees completely mirrored what the Best Picture nominees were in 2024.
Have things really changed that much between now and December, when the winners of the AFI Awards were announced? In recent years that awards body has been almost as accurate at predicting the final 10 Best Picture nominees, often only leaving out the international titles. For example, the American Film Institute had “May December” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” last year instead of eventual nominees “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest,...

The Producers Guild of America, one of the most reliable predictors of success in the Oscars’ Best Picture category, has nominated Oscar favorites “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez” and “Wicked” for its top feature film award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Other nominees in the category are “Dune: Part Two,” “A Real Pain,” “September 5” and “The Substance.”
While last year’s PGA nominations included a record three films directed by women and three predominantly not in English,”The Substance” was this year’s only female-directed nominee and “Emilia Perez” its only non-English one.
The nominations include most of the top contenders for the Oscar for Best Picture, with the indies “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing” being the highest-profile films that were left out. “September 5,” the European-made film about the terrorist attacks at the Munich Olympics in 1972, is the biggest...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) unveiled its 2025 Awards nominees on Thursday, honoring an eclectic slate of films poised to dominate this year’s Oscar race.
Among the 10 nominees for the coveted Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures are Sean Baker’s poignant dramedy “Anora,” Brady Corbet’s meticulously crafted historical epic “The Brutalist,” Edward Berger’s religious thriller “Conclave,” Jacques Audiard’s genre-bending musical “Emilia Pérez” and Jon M. Chu’s glittering adaptation of “Wicked.”
Perhaps the most unexpected entry in this year’s list is Tim Fehlbaum’s indie thriller “September 5.” The high-stakes dystopian drama, acquired by Paramount Pictures after generating buzz at Venice and Telluride, edged out high-profile contenders like RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys” and Greg Kwedar’s prison drama “Sing Sing.” The nod for “September 5” marks a significant moment for the underdog film, which now finds itself in the best picture conversation.
