Mr Loverman, Shōgun, And Blue Lights Score At The BAFTA TV Awards 2025 — See The Full Winners’ List
Image
With awards season all but done and dusted, Oscars. Golden Globes, SAGs, and BAFTAs all having been dutifully doled out over the past few months, this evening saw the BAFTA TV Awards 2025 — hosted by Avengers: Doomsday's Alan Cumming and held at London's Royal Festival Hall — take centre stage for a night of red carpet walking and shiny statue giving. And during a telecast in which the two most nominated shows — Netflix stalker thriller Baby Reindeer and ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office — took home one award apiece, the likes of Mr Loverman, Shōgun, and Blue Lights all scored big wins in major categories.

On the night, Baby Reindeer's sole win saw Jessica Gunning's turn as Richard Gadd's crazed stalker Martha recognised in the Supporting Actress race, while Mr Bates Vs Post Office, which was elsewhere nominated in both Lead acting categories, took home the coveted accolade for Limited Drama.

BAFTA TV Awards Complete Winners: ‘Mr Bates Vs The Post Office’ & ‘Mr Loverman’ Win Big Prizes
Image
Mr Bates vs The Post Office and Mr Loverman were the big victors at the BAFTA TV Awards, meaning Baby Reindeer did not continue its dominant winning streak.

Hosted by The Traitors star Alan Cumming, the BAFTA ceremony took place in sparkling spring sunshine on the banks of the River Thames at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday.

The prizes were fairly evenly shared, but perhaps unsurprisingly, it was a notable night for Mr Bates vs The Post Office, the ITV series that dominated the UK ratings last year and fuelled a national conversation about injustices faced by innocent British postmasters, who were convicted of theft, fraud, and false accounting.

The series won Best Limited Drama, beating Baby Reindeer, which has been a darling of the awards season after cleaning up at the Emmys and Golden Globes. Jessica Gunning did, however, take home the prize for Best Supporting Actress for Baby Reindeer,...

BAFTA TV Awards 2025: Full Winners List and Key Highlights
Alan Cumming
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented its 2025 TV Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London, with a wide spectrum of talent recognized across drama, comedy, factual, and children’s programming. Hosted by Alan Cumming, the event was broadcast on BBC One domestically and streamed on BritBox in the United States, continuing the Academy’s emphasis on broad accessibility for international audiences.

This year’s selections showcased both returning series and first-time contenders. Several winners have already seen cultural ripple effects across the UK media landscape. ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office stood out not only for winning Limited Drama but also for earning the Special Award, recognizing ITV’s role in commissioning a project that helped catalyze national discussion. Based on a real-life miscarriage of justice, the series dramatized the experiences of sub-postmasters wrongly accused of theft and fraud, spurring public and political attention.

‘Shogun’ Showrunner Celebrates BAFTA Win By Declaring: Good TV Is “Borderless” Amid Trump Tariff Threat
Image
Shōgun scooped Best International series at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday — and showrunner Justin Marks appeared to reference Donald Trump’s tariff plan in his acceptance speech.

Collecting the prize on stage at the Royal Festival Hall in London, Marks made explicit reference to the global nature of his FX and Disney+ series Shōgun.

“You have a bunch of Americans who got together with a bunch of Europeans and a bunch of Japanese and made a show in Canada, and now we are standing here on stage in England,” he said.

“That we are on stage is truly a testament to the spirit of grand international collaboration that our crew of 3,000 people espoused. It’s a spirit that is sadly disappearing from the world right now.” Marks added: “Thank you, BAFTA… for honoring this idea that good television is truly a borderless nation.”

Trump’s planned film tariff has...

John Landgraf Says Industry Contraction Won’t Kill Hollywood, Encourages Young Execs to ‘Keep Getting Better’
Image
Like most professionals working in Hollywood today, John Landgraf can’t predict what the industry will look like as it continues to contract with the decline of linear and rise of streaming. But he feels bullish that Hollywood will “still be here” at the end of this period of change, and those with the mindset to persist will be there as well.

The FX chairman delivered the equal parts optimistic and realistic sentiment about the future of entertainment during a panel conversation with Disney TV studios chief Eric Schrier, moderated by filmmaker Paris Barclay and hosted by the Hollywood Radio & Television Society. Barclay brought up the topic as he jokingly asked the TV executives for a glimmer of hope that the industry would “be Ok” amid layoffs and change permeating across the sector.

“And there’ll be room for all of us?” Barclay responded to Landgraf’s optimistic view.

John Landgraf’s Optimistic Forecast for Hollywood: “It’ll Still Be Here”
Image
With a collective ennui permeating the entertainment industry, it’d be understandable if many in attendance at a Thursday discussion with FX’s John Landgraf and Disney’s Eric Schrier might have been seeking at least one reason to feel optimistic. And they got it. Sort of.

Late in the Disney lot panel put on by Hollywood Radio & Television Society, the moderator, director Paris Barclay, finally turned from the topic at hand (“cultivating creative excellence”) to the one on everybody’s mind: industry shrinkage. “You’ve got to tell us [Hollywood] is going to be Ok,” Barclay jokingly implored the FX chairman.

“It’ll still be here,” Landgraf replied.

“And there’ll be a place for all of us?” Barclay countered.

“I don’t know about all of us,” he replied. “I can’t speak for everyone. Personally, my singular strategy is just keep getting better. Early in my career,...

Minha Kim, Anna Sawai, Jimmi Simpson and all the ‘Pachinko’ actors submitted for Emmy ballot
Image
Pachinko is hoping for better luck the second time around at the Emmys.

Based on Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel, the critically adored epic Apple TV+ series, which follows four generations of a Korean family, is submitting six of its ensemble for acting categories, Gold Derby has learned.

Jin Ha (Solomon Baek) and Lee Min-ho (Koh Hansu) will be entered in for Best Drama Actor; Minha Kim (young Sunja) for Drama Actress; Youn Yuh-jung (elder Sunja) and Anna Sawai (Naomi) for Drama Supporting Actress; and Jimmi Simpson (Tom Andrews) for Drama Supporting Actor.

(As Gold Derby previously reported, Netflix is submitting Simpson for Limited Series/Movie Supporting Actor for the “USS Callister: Into Infinity” installment of Black Mirror. Sawai, meanwhile, won Best Drama Actress last year for her role in Shōgun.)

Based on our latest odds, Pachinko is on the outside looking in regarding the major Emmy races. The...

‘Shogun,’ ‘Baby Reindeer,’ ‘Fantasmas’ Top 2025 Peabody Awards Winners
Hiroyuki Sanada in Shōgun (2024)
The Peabody Awards revealed their 2025 honorees this morning, and the winner’s list included some expected titles and a surprise omission or two. “Shogun” and “Baby Reindeer” were a given; Julio Torres’ “Fantasmas” was not. Then again, the recent Peabody Awards committee also recognized the superior “Los Espookys,” so perhaps Torres has a fan or two among the voters.

Other Entertainment winners included PBS’ “Mr Bates vs The Post Office,” Steven Zaillian’s “Ripley,” FX’s “Say Nothing,” and Peacock’s “We Are Lady Parts.”

Entertainment nominees that didn’t make the final cut included (shockingly) the third season of “Hacks,” “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” “Alex Edelman: Just For Us,” and, in a “whew, cause it was bad,” the FX limited series “Clipped.”

Oscar nominee “Black Box Diaries” tops the Documentary category winners, along with “Bread & Roses,...

FX and Hulu put out a press release confirming that season 2 will beging filming in January 2026. Returning as Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne.

For those who have forgotten, Shōgun focuses on Blackthorne, a British sailor who lands in 17th century Japan. He’s soon pulled into the various local conflicts between the various clans as well as the European explorers who wish to exploit the land for themselves.

Season 1 concluded with Toranaga rising up as the shōgun leader while Blackthorne was putting together a ship to return to England. Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks return as showrunners, and Sanada is also an executive producer.

'Shōgun' Season 2 Sets Production Start Date, Plot Detalis Revealed
Image
While there was initially uncertainty about when the second season of the hit series Shōgun would begin production, an exciting new update has been released on the upcoming installment. A new report from Variety has revealed that the historical drama will begin filming Season 2 in January 2026 in Vancouver. Given the massive success and popularity of Shōgun, stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will also be co-executive producers on the series. Sanada had already received a producer credit on Season 1, making his title of executive producer a well-deserved promotion.

The first season of Shōgun was based on James Clavell's novel of the same name. The author is well-known for his series of sweeping historical epics, known as the Asian Saga of novels. Interestingly, the 10-episode season covered the entirety of the novel, with there originally not being an intention to continue past the source material. Now, following the record-breaking 18 Emmy...

Shogun Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
Image
Let there be no doubt: "Shōgun" was the television event of 2024. Most streaming aggregators ranked it as the most viewed series across all platforms for the year, while critics showered the adaptation of James Clavell's epic novel with praise ("Shōgun" season 1 holds a 100% Fresh rating with Rotten Tomatoes' Top Critics). The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences were equally enamored of the series, bestowing it with an unprecedented 18 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most ever dished out to a single show for one season. It took home nearly all of the top creative awards for a drama series as well, losing only Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series because it was nominated twice in both categories.

After enchanting critics and mainstream viewers alike, it should come as no surprise that "Shōgun" season 2 will easily be the most anticipated television event whenever it premieres.

Exciting new details as plans for Shōgun season 2 come together
Image
The first season of Shōgun, a historical drama based on James Clavell's novel, was the most-watched series in the history of FX. And why not? It was great.

FX has decided to go ahead with a second season of Shōgun, which is dicey because the first covered the entirety of Clavell's novel. Deadline now reports that the new season will be set 10 years after the end of the first, when Japanese feudal Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) faced down his enemies in an attempt to unite Japan under one Shogunate. He had help from John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), an English ship pilot who washes ashore in Japan in the first episode. FX says the new season “continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined."

Obviously both Sanada and Jarvis will be back, with Sanada upgraded from producer to executive producer and...

Shogun Season 2 To Shoot In 2026 — Hiroyuki Sanada And Cosmo Jarvis Will Return
Image
When we first learned last May that FX's feudal Japan-set epic Shōgun had scored a Season 2 and 3 renewal, it would be fair to say that our reaction was excitement and trepidation in equal measure. Excitement because Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks' sweeping, lavish treatment of James Clavell's novel gave us the best TV show of 2024; trepidation because Shōgun was very much pitched and designed as a limited series, with its finale taking us to the end of Clavell's book. Today however, announcing a January 2026 start date for production on Season 2, FX and Disney+ have given us a little more information on what's next for the Shōgunverse.

First thing's first, Kondo and Marks are back to helm and write Shōgun Season 2, and they will be joined by stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, who will reprise their roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne respectively on the show's sophomore outing.

Bad News for Hiroyuki Sanada Fans: Shogun Season 2 First Details Hint Lord Toranaga’s Death
Image
Fans of FX’s Shogun are still reeling from the epic first season, in which Hiroyuki Sanada’s Lord Yoshii Toranaga stole the show with his cunning and quiet strength. Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel, the series brought 17th-century Japan to life, earning 25 Emmy nominations, 18 wins, and a massive global following.

Season 2, heading for production, looms with a confirmed “10-year time skip,” sparking speculation about Toranaga’s fate. At 65, Sanada, who follows the beat of his real-life counterpart, Tokugawa Ieyasu (even the age), is not getting younger, and historical clues align with a logical yet heartbreaking possibility: an honorable ending for Toranaga rather than stretching his story into a potential Season 3.

What does Shogun Season 2 hold for Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s fate? Shogun Season 1 | Credit: FX

FX finally shared an official update on the much-anticipated second season of Shōgun, confirming the new season is targeting a January 2026 start of production in Vancouver. The award-winning first season premiered in February 2026, and the announcement seems to indicate fans may not get new episodes until late 2026 or early 2027.

FX has set a production start date for the second season of Shōgun, with filming scheduled to begin in January 2026 in Vancouver. The announcement confirms the continuation of the Emmy-winning historical drama after the network previously disclosed development plans for two more seasons.

Series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks recently completed the writers room for season two, which is described by FX as a new chapter that will unfold ten years after the events of the first season. Shōgun season 2 confirmed to start production in January
Hiroyuki Sanada in Shōgun (2024)
Shōgun season 2 is heading into production in early 2026 – and we have a few more details on the new season to share.

Shōgun was one of 2024’s best TV shows, and news of its renewal for another season quickly followed that year’s finale. The problem? Season 1 had already adapted all of James Clavell’s 1975 novel.

That didn’t stop showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks from pursuing a completely original new season, however, and while it’s still some time away, Shōgun season 2 is steadily moving forward. The writers’ room has now been set up, and the new season will go into production in January 2026 in Vancouver, which will be transformed into 17th century Japan.

The new season will take place ten years after the events of the first season, which ended with Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) winning the war against Ishido and the revelation that Toranaga had purposefully burned...

Shogun Season 2 Officially Announced With Returning Stars and Massive Time Jump
Image
Shōgun is no longer a limited series. Almost a year after FX launched talks with the estate of Shōgun author James Clavell to develop two additional seasons, the network has officially announced a second season of the Emmy-winning historical drama.

Per TVLine, physical production is scheduled to begin on Shōgun Season 2 in January 2026 in Vancouver, Canada. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will return to star as Lord Toranaga and John Blackthorne, in addition to serving as executive producer and co-executive producer, respectively. Shōgun, an adaptation of Clavell’s best-selling 1975 novel of the same name, was originally billed as a limited series when it debuted last year. However, the show's critical acclaim led to FX beginning talks for two more seasons, which in turn allowed it to compete in the drama series categories at the Emmys. After taking home a record 18 Emmys, the anticipation for more Shōgun could not be higher.

Shōgun is readying its comeback.

On Thursday, FX, Hulu, and Disney+ revealed the second season of the Emmy Award-winning series will begin production in January 2026.

Original showrunners and creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks will return for Season 2. The first season was based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel of the same name and told the contained story of the source book.

Set in feudal Japan, Season 1 of Shōgun focused primarily on the relationship between Japanese Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Emmy winner Hiroyuki Sanada) and John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked English sailor who becomes Toranaga’s unwitting ally. Sanada, a producer on the original installment, has been upped to executive producer for Season 2; Jarvis is joining the series’ producing ranks as co-executive producer.

FX has revealed more details about the premise of the second season. It “will be “a wholly original new chapter to the first season,” which was an adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel, the network said.

15 Shows Keeping the Water Cooler Effect Alive
Image
There used to be a time when, wherever you worked, television could send people in droves to the water cooler to talk about the latest episode of a buzzworthy series that everyone tuned in to.

These series earned the title of “water cooler shows” because you could guarantee that everyone would be talking about everything that transpired the following day.

I still remember the Golden Era of American Idol when my entire family would race home just in time to see specific performances, participate in Facebook groups, and watch parties devoted to Scandal every week.

(Courtesy of HBO)

Shows like Succession and Game of Thrones would set the internet ablaze faithfully during and after every single installment until their ends.

Maybe we don’t gather around a water cooler or unpack a series during lunch breaks with our colleagues. However, we still live-tweet episodes on social media platforms and discussion boards,...

You might have missed a huge and exciting update for Ready or Not 2
Image
A Ready or Not sequel was confirmed earlier this year, and now we're starting to get more details about the upcoming film from Radio Silence, which will see the return of star Samara Weaving.

Weaving was the "final girl" from the 2019 movie. Her character, Grace, married into the Le Domas family, unaware of the twisted game they play on every family member's wedding day. Grace picks "Hide-and-Seek," leading her to run from the family as they try to murder her to fulfill their part of a generational curse.

Earlier this week, Searchlight Pictures shared an endearing promotional video announcing new cast members and more.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come

Even before the sequel was officially announced, fans hoped it would be subtitled "Here I Come." It's similar to Happy Death Day 2U and the upcoming Now You See Me: Now You Don't. Who doesn't love a clever title...

How the overwhelming reaction to ‘9-1-1’ death demonstrates disconnect between viewers and Emmy voters
Image
Warning: this article contains spoilers from the April 17 finale of 9-1-1. Read at your own risk!

Twenty years ago, Peter Krause's death as funeral director Nate Fisher on Six Feet Under shocked viewers and earned him his third Best Drama Actor Emmy nomination for the role. Cut to today, and Krause is once again causing audiences to have an emotional reaction to one of his character's demises — Los Angeles Fire Dept. Capt. Bobby Nash on 9-1-1. But the actor likely won't receive an Emmy bid this time around.

It boils down to the tug-of-war between prestige TV and popular TV. For the most part, shows that receive Emmy Awards tend to be highbrow, sophisticated, cultured ... yet little-watched. Two programs that recently took over the Emmys — Shōgun (a Japanese historical epic drama) and Succession (about a rich family squabbling over control of their company) — struggled when it came to viewership.

How 77-Year-Old Kathy Bates Could Break an Emmy Record With ‘Matlock’ Role
Image
Kathy Bates is winning cases on screen, and might win over Emmy voters next.

Bates, a titan of stage and screen, is poised to make Emmy history this year. If she receives a nomination for her magnetic performance in CBS’s “Matlock” reboot, she will become the oldest nominee ever in the lead drama actress category — at the age of 77.

Bates, born June 28, 1948, would be just two weeks past her birthday when the 2025 Emmy nominations are announced on July 17. Should her name be called — as many believe she’s the current frontrunner in the category — she would surpass the record held by Angela Lansbury, who was 70 when she received her final nomination in 1996 for “Murder, She Wrote.”

In “Matlock,” Bates plays Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a woman who reenters the legal world decades after retiring under seemingly tragic circumstances. The public version of her story is that she was widowed and...
