Okay, I know it sounds cheesy but this episode really appeals to a Castle fan. One of the main reasons why I watch the show is due to its character developments and interpersonal relationships. We all know there's an episode which recaps the whole show, this one was too good. Unlike other shows the present case was focused on along with reminiscing past memories. Good performance by Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. Always a fan.

    Love
I usually hate flashback episodes. I always feel like they are a cheap trick by the show runners to save the cost of filming new scenes. Usually, a flashback episode does little for the viewer except perhaps for those who want to see their favorite scenes replayed. (Well, you can get a lot of those from one of the most popular websites featuring video clips.)

This flashback episode adds value. We just had two episodes establishing and lamenting that Castle had been taking Beckett for granted. This episode builds, piece by piece, the proof of Castle's love for Beckett, and perhaps to a slightly lesser extent, her for him. It culminates in the kissing scene which is pure passion. This episode is almost entirely about Castle and Beckett

We've seen little clues of a chink in their mutual love armor. And in episodes soon to come, the showrunners will expand on that chink so that when it comes to a crux in the final season the viewer, and more importantly Castle and Beckett, can understand it. Don't get me wrong. Castle and Beckett love each other. They really do. They don't understand yet what their chink is. It needs to be dealt with. And perhaps they still need to grow a little in that love so when the time comes they can make the right choices. There is some true brilliance in developing this thread despite what most fans concede is a general decline in the show especially in the last season. I don't know how early in the game the show runners started consciously developing this thread. I suspect there was some serendipity in this regard. But I have no doubt that Castle and Beckett are a true love story.

I've purposely not stated anything about what that chink is. I explain it, briefly, in my review of S8E15. So spoiler alert.

I like this episode just for the FLASHBACKS - usually flashbacks make a show seem lazy but not this episode because it shows the best & funniest moments that make this series fun & interesting - RICK CASTLE' S statement that he was distracted by KATE BECKETT'S dizzying array of hairstyles over the series was great because that also confused me too as to why so many hairstyles and so many hair colors - my score 10 stars ⭐ out of 10 stars ⭐ -
  • Just about every television series goes for the flashback episode sooner or later. Sometimes, they are obvious about it, sometimes they try to cleverly weave it into the storyline and fail. This is definitely the latter, except for the fail part. This is actually fun to watch, possibly because the flashbacks run just 5 or 10 seconds each, so we get to see a lot of them, many more than in most such episodes. Add to this, we get some really great acting. Pretty standard script, in my view, but there's not a lot of wiggle room in this oft-used storyline, so you have to depend on the actors to make it more than a cliché story. Fillion and Katic deliver.

It's your kind of typical flashback/filler episode but it's done and written very well. The scenario of Beckett being stuck when walking on a bomb, and Castle staying with her. It was great way to process and see how far they have come, platonically as in their relationship (also, made me forgot their funny hairstyles in first seasons lmao). We are reminded how much Castle especially has grown, and how his character developed. Especially his feelings and attitude towards Beckett. It was obvious there was chemistry. But their story has matured and gotten deeper. It was funny to see them fight about who fell for who first. Even we know, the it's "He fell first but she fell harder" fits to them perfectly.

Castle episodes have become one of my little Thursday joys that at least something watchable will be on this evening. So I don't like to see them spoiled by having to watch a flashback episode. A Flashback Episode! I cannot think of a single worse thing about television, no trope or gimmick, that makes my blood boil more than flashback episodes. Nothing else would make me want to fill this review with crude profanities to express my utter disappointment.

And to tell the truth I didn't even watch the whole episode fully. I clicked on it back and fort as I was surfing the channels for something better to watch while the flashbacks were going on. And the non-flashback parts were not that bad, except of course the "OMG Beckett Might Die" part. That was just cringe worthy. As if anyone was actually fooled into thinking one of the main stars of the show would die.

In short, 1 star may not be a fair or objective grade but does it really matter how edible the food is after someone spilled sewer water on half of it? Sure, there may be some good parts, but the smell alone kills all your appetite.
  • There's some good stuff in this episode don't get me wrong, but this is supposed to be a cop show not a rom com. Look, great romance in crime dramas can overshadow the plot, yes. But the flashbacks to make us nostalgic and remind us of how much better their dynamic was in the early seasons is so useless. Good writing could give us these insights into their feeling without spending the majority of the episode showing us a montage of other episodes. I know these episodes exist because they don't have the budget for full seasons but there are better ways to fill the time, some of the best episodes in the history of television have been bottle episodes that exist for this exact reason. It also doesn't help that Castle and Becket's characters are annoying caricatures of themselves in this episode, by far the worst episode of the show so far. The fact that they tried to make the audience emotional at the end is a slap in the face and an insult to their intelligence.

Last note, Castle was definitely following her around at least partially because he liked playing cop.
