The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations list included one significant omission. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez was left off the nonprofit advocacy group’s list of “303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.”
The snub further illustrates the disconnect between LGBTQ media and the entertainment industry over the controversial crime musical from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emilia Pérez is widely predicted to receive several Oscar nominations on Thursday. The movie could set multiple Academy Awards records, including the most nominations ever for an international film and the most nominations for any film. The film’s star, Karla Sofia Gascón, is also predicted to make history as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress. Emilia Pérez has already set a Golden Globes record with the most nominations ever...

One Chicago has around since 2012. There have been countless actors who have come through and left their mark on the franchise, whether it be newcomers who rise to fame, superstars who nab small parts, or established veterans at the tail end of their careers.
These actors rarely stay. Most struggle to stay with a show for over a decade. That said, part of the fun is getting to see where certain One Chicago stars wind up once they decided to leave their title. Many decide to make a lateral pivot, and try their hand at another established prodecedural franchise. Such has been the case with Annie Ilonzeh.

“Anora,” the free-wheeling tale of a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a horror film about two teenagers whose obsession with a show causes them to lose grip on reality, dominated the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Wednesday, picking up six nods apiece. Both movies are up for best feature, competing against the body horror film, “The Substance,” as well as “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing,” dramas that deal with different aspects of the criminal justice system.
This year the Spirit Awards Film nominating committees said the movies it considered ranged in budget from $112,000 to $28 million. Those budgetary caps don’t apply to the shows that the Spirits recognized, such as “Shōgun,” a lavish historical epic that topped all series with five nominations, including one for best new scripted series. According to BET+, the series was the No. 1 scripted comedy series on the platform during its debut week (Feb. 15). “We congratulate the amazing writers, cast, crew, and our production partners for creating such an entertaining first season,” Jason Harvey, exec VP and head of BET+ said in a statement. “‘Churchy’ blends humor and heart around the center all of which resonated tremendously with viewers. We are excited to see where the second season will take us.”
The show is inspired by the comedy of Fredericks, who plays Corey Carr Jr., a character that finds himself at a crossroads when his father’s mega-church decides not to let him inherit its leadership.

Being “delicate” with Ryan Murphy has certainly paid off for Kim Kardashian. The actress and reality-tv star is deepening her relationship with studio 20th Television under a new first-look deal — her first for scripted programming.
Kim K. already has “The Kardashians” on Hulu heading into its fifth season, and entered (real) acting with Murphy’s “American Horror Story: Delicate,” a 20th TV production. She’s set to star in Murphy’s upcoming legal drama “All’s Fair,” also at 20th.
Now, the studio can give her a parking space. Kardashian will develop projects that span drama, comedy, and limited series under the multi-year deal.
Her first project under the deal is a collaboration with “black-ish” creator Kenya Barris called “Group Chat.” It is currently in development for Hulu and is based on the Nyt bestselling book “The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness” from author La La Anthony.

“Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia relied on his “guru” Joni Mitchell (via her song “People’s Parties”) when figuring out the tone for his Apple TV+ comedy: “Laughing and crying are the same release.”
“Our show took itself really seriously even as it went absurd,” Sylvia said. “It’s a gay ‘Fantasia,’ right? It’s tone is maximalist gay. This was a drag show on a $12 million episode budget.”
Sylvia joined “Hacks” co-creator Jen Statsky, “Krapopolis” creator Dan Harmon, “Young Sheldon” exec producer Steve Holland, “What We Do in the Shadows” writer Jake Bender, “Diarra From Detroit” creator/star Diarra Kilpatrick and “Loot” co-creator Alan Yang on a panel exploring comedy writing on Thursday night during Variety‘s A Night in the Writers’ Room. BET wants some Emmys.
In a year where major streamers and legacy networks dominate the Emmy conversations, BET Media Group, which includes BET+ and BET Studios, has had a record-breaking year for its critically acclaimed content, such as Lee Daniels’ racy sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show,” the drama thriller “Average Joe” and the dark comedy “Diarra From Detroit.” All in all, the legacy broadcast media network has submitted in over 35 Primetime Emmy categories, the most in its history.
BET+ surprised many in 2022 and 2023 when it picked up back-to-back nominations for “The Ms. Pat Show” director Mary Lou Belli. A veteran in the TV business, she’s helmed notable episodes of “Sister, Sister,” “Monk” and “NCIS.” After dropping its fourth season on May 23, Belli is up for consideration once again for the premiere episode “I’m the Pappy,” alongside co-creator and showrunner Jordan E. Cooper for “The Book of Denise” episode.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“Diarra from Detroit” starts simply enough. Months into a separation from her husband, Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick) pushes herself into a blind date. It goes well — very well — but then she doesn’t hear from him. It’s like… poof. He’s gone. What happened? Is he busy? Sick? In trouble? Diarra’s friends mock her for ignoring the most obvious answer — she’s been ghosted — but the inquisitive school teacher can’t shake the feeling that something else is going on.
She’s right, and “Diarra from Detroit,” available on BET+, gradually develops into a winding mystery, then a shocking thriller, then a tender romance. Soon, it’s living within all these genre at once, plus...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of “Diarra from Detroit” below.]
By the time the Season 1 finale of “Diarra from Detroit” draws to a satisfying conclusion, Diarra (and we) have been through a lot. And the episode brings the tangled mystery to such an adroit close (while leaving enough unanswered questions to fuel a second season) that surely its structure was always part of the show’s DNA.
Nah, that’s not how TV works. Luckily, co-showrunner and star Diarra Kilpatrick knows how to pivot.
“We didn’t have the budget to shoot Episode 8 as it was originally written and conceived,” Kilpatrick told IndieWire. “Sometimes creativity comes from limitations.”
Diarra’s reconciliation with Swa (Morris Chestnut) proves to be short-lived when she finally solves the mystery of why he abruptly asked for an open marriage (to misdirect her away from learning about the vasectomy he’d had years ago!). Burying her feelings once again with the case,...

At a time when networks are loudly hunting for the next “second-screen series” (meaning a show you watch while you scroll on your phone), “Diarra from Detroit” is a bracing blast from the not-so-distant past when TV wasn’t just background noise.
“For me, TV can be a really sacred time,” series creator/showrunner/star Diarra Kilpatrick told IndieWire. “TV watching time can be like a really sweet and sacred time. And so I did want to make something where each episode felt like a full meal. That was intentional from the very beginning. You know when you have half of a piece of key lime pie left in the refrigerator and all day, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to go home and eat the other half of that key lime pie with some peppermint tea’? “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have returned for their next act with a bold new science fiction series that is as entertaining as it is full of big ideas. The Emmy-winning duo teams with Alexander Woo (“The Terror: Infamy”) for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Chinese novel “The Three-Body Problem,” which is the first in a trilogy that was once deemed unadaptable. But hey, we’re all about proving people wrong these days.
The eight-episode first season, which is now streaming, transports the novel’s action to the U.K., depicting a world in which the results of experiments involving particle accelerators have stopped making sense, revealing that the world as we know it — science as we understand it — is no longer functioning as it should. CBS has handed a straight-to-series order to Watson, from writer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS Studios, for the 2024-25 broadcast season. Morris Chestnut is set to play the title role and executive produce the medical drama inspired by the characters from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries.
Last January, CBS ordered two drama pilots, Elsbeth starring Carrie Preston and Matlock starring Kathy Bates, as well as writers rooms for two medical drama projects, Watson and The Pact.
