Channel 4 Engages Headhunter To Find In-House Production Chief
Image
Exclusive: Channel 4’s plans to move into in-house production are heating up.

Deadline hears that the UK commercial network behind The Great British Bake Off has engaged a headhunter to identify an executive to lead the unnamed unit.

Ibison, the search company run by former Ymu talent agent Nicola Ibison, is overseeing the external recruitment process and has begun approaching potential candidates.

Channel 4 is open-minded about the job title for the new in-house chief, believing that the preference of the successful candidate will be an important factor.

A source said Channel 4 is looking for an executive who sits one rung below big production hitters, such as Sony boss Wayne Garvie or Jane Turton, the All3Media CEO.

The role will report into chief operating officer Jonathan Allan, who is poised to step up to interim CEO when Alex Mahon exits Horseferry Road in the coming weeks.

Channel 4’s move into production is a significant step,...

‘The Last of Us’ Emmy odds shake-up: With Kaitlyn Dever going guest, Isabela Merced jumps up in supporting
Image
Last week, HBO announced that The Last of Us scene-stealer Kaitlyn Dever would be campaigning as a guest star, as opposed to a supporting actress, for the zombie apocalypse drama. That left an opening in Gold Derby's Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds that has since been filled by ... drumroll, please ... her costar Isabela Merced.

Dever plays Abby, a soldier who seeks revenge against Joel (Pedro Pascal) in Season 2 for the death of her father in Season 1. Since Dever has only appeared in two episodes (so far), she's eligible to compete as a guest star for The Last of Us because of the TV Academy's "less than 50 percent" ruling. The 28-year-old will also be on the Emmy ballot for Apple Cider Vinegar in Best Limited Series/Movie Actress.

Merced is another newcomer to The Last of Us this year, playing the free-spirited Dina, the romantic interest of Ellie (Bella Ramsey...

15 Most Underrated TV Shows On Netflix
Image
For the past few years, Netflix could fairly be accused of employing a strategy of throwing everything they've got against a wall and seeing what sticks. With new series and original films premiering on a weekly basis, viewers are both spoiled for choice and browbeaten into submission with the sheer quantity of options at their fingertips. But let's be honest, quality control hasn't exactly been the name of the game for the streamer. They traffic in numbers, pure and simple, and with enough content there's sure to be some projects that end up being winners. That's just the law of probabilities.

But this approach has an unintended side effect, in that plenty of genuinely good shows fall by the wayside, ignored by viewers in a media landscape where its physically impossible to pay attention to every new release. Whether they were cancelled too early, failed to find an audience, or...

How Crime Series ‘Code of Silence,’ Starring Rose Ayling-Ellis, Put Inclusion Front and Center
Image
Crime drama Code of Silence, premiering on ITV and streamer Itvx in the U.K. on May 18 and on streaming service BritBox in the U.S. and Canada in July, breaks new ground in several ways. Not only does it star rising British actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, who has been tearing down walls left and right for years, in her first-ever lead role.

And not only does her role as Alison, a smart and determined deaf woman who works in a police canteen and gets recruited to use her lip-reading skills in a covert operation, redefine how deaf characters can be featured on screen.

But most important, Code of Silence is an example of a crime show targeting a broad audience that also provides representation for the deaf, disabled and neurodiverse communities, both in front of and behind the camera. As such, it is already being touted as a potential role...

Breaking: ‘The Pitt’ star Noah Wyle takes the lead in latest Emmy odds for Best Actor
Image
The Emmy race for Best Drama Actor just received a shot of adrenaline.

For the first time since Gold Derby's 2025 Emmys predictions center opened in February, Noah Wyle is leading the odds in this topsy-turvy category. The Pitt star has overtaken Adam Scott (Severance), who has been in the No. 1 position since early March. Before that, Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) was the frontrunner.

Max's real-time hospital drama has been on a major upswing since its final episodes streamed in April. In one buzzed-about moment, Wyle's character, Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, had a mental breakdown after a concert shooting brought dozens of patients into his emergency room, including his quasi-stepson's new girlfriend. Wyle is a five-time Emmy nominee for ER (1995-99), but this would be his first win.

For Best Drama Series, The Pitt is now tied with The Last of Us in second place, both behind Severance. Taylor Dearden as...

What Richard Bacon Did Next: How the Former (and Once Famously Fired) BBC Host Became Unscripted TV’s Wildest Ideas Man
Image
In a TV studio on the banks of the Thames in London, a team of comedians are trying — and almost entirely failing — to get a laugh out of a gameshow audience.

It feels somewhat unsettling at first. Studio audiences aren’t usually the most comically discerning. But here, that’s the whole point. Each time an audience member so much as sniggers or sneezes, money is docked from a prize pot of £250,000, the slightest noise costing them up to £10,000 each time. Unfortunately for them, all 75 are on camera and mic’d up, with a team of stern-looking officials on the side monitoring fluctuating volume levels and ready to press a buzzer.

“Silence is Golden” — as it’s called — launches on UKTV on May 5. In something of a rarity, the format has already been sold to four other countries across Europe and Latin America before it’s even aired a single episode.

Meanwhile, current group CFO and interim CFO Chris Fry has been promoted to the newly created role of Group COO in addition to his duties as CFO.

The appointments follow the decision taken by Sister at the end of 2024 following the departure of CEO Cindy Holland to shift its group operations to the U.K. from the U.S.

Sister Hires Ex-Banijay UK Boss As Group CEO
Image
Black Doves producer Sister has made a splash in London with the hire of ex-Banijay UK boss Lucinda Hicks.

Hicks becomes Sister Group CEO, overseeing strategy for both the production outfit and Sister partners including Pamela: A Love Story producer Dorothy Street Pictures, Richard Bacon’s Yes Yes Media and Stephen Curry’s Unanimous.

Hicks is effectively replacing ex-Global CEO Cindy Holland, who exited last year at which point Sister closed its L.A. office. Hicks will, however, be based in London while Holland was in the U.S. Sister co-founders Jane Featherstone and Elisabeth Murdoch have stressed in recent months that the group will continue to pitch into the U.S. but HQ is now very much in the UK.

Hicks became CEO of Banijay UK when the company acquired her former employer Endemol Shine Group. She left two years later and has been consulting, including with Channel 4...

'Pride & Prejudice's Theatrical Re-Release Passes a Modest Milestone
Image
The millennial urge to revisit one's youth is being satisfied in recent months, with a string of theatrical re-releases designed to facilitate just that. This weekend, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith delivered a haul so massive that it could put new releases to shame. But a week before that, Focus Features re-released Pride & Prejudice in celebration of its 20th anniversary, generating about as much as the movie did in its original opening weekend back in 2005.

After 10 days in theaters, Pride & Prejudicehas grossed over $5 million at the domestic box office, taking its domestic haul past the $40 million mark, and its global haul past the $130 million milestone. Directed by Joe Wright, the movie made stars of Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen,...

'Black Doves': Platonic Love in a Spy Drama
Image
In film and TV, we’re often primed to think of romantic love as the ultimate happy ending for every kind of story. But in Black Doves, a spy thriller series starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, it’s the unlikely friendship between two undercover agents that becomes the beating heart of the whole shebang. “It was always, to me, going to be a story about friendship,” says the show’s writer and creator, Joe Barton. “I’m fascinated with the platonic loves of our lives, the people that we love [in ways] that aren’t romantic or familial. And actually, those [loves] often last longer and are stronger. I just find that dynamic gets underexplored. That was always my North Star when I was writing it.”

In the show, Knightley plays Helen, the seemingly perfect wife of a Tory politician, who has a secret second life as a ruthless spy.

Edebiri, who has won a Golden Globe, two SAG Awards and an Emmy for her performance on “The Bear,” will also serve as an exec producer alongside Sharpe.

Described in the synopsis as an “unusual take” on a classic romantic comedy, “Prodigies” is set to explore the universal complexities of long-term relationships through the lens of a very unique couple. The story follows Didi (Edebiri) and Ren (Sharpe), two ex-child prodigies who have been together since they were children and, now in their early 30s,...

Incidentally, it made $2.8 million in its original opening weekend two decades ago. ‘Warrior’ Star Andrew Koji to Lead Indie Action Heist Film ‘High Stakes Holiday’
Image
Andrew Koji, best known for “Bullet Train” and the Max series “Warrior,” will next star in the cast of an indie action and heist film called “High Stakes Holiday.”

The film is in the vein of “Ocean’s 11” meets “Home Alone” and follows a jaded ex-MI6 agent turned security guard (Koji) who teams up with two sharp-witted sisters on vacation in Las Vegas after they get caught in the middle of a high-stakes heist. The trio must tag team to outsmart a cunning international thief and save a priceless diamond gauntlet — just in time for Christmas.

“High Stakes Holiday” also stars actual sisters Madeleine McGraw, best known for “The Black Phone,” and Violet McGraw, best known for “M3GAN,” as the two on-screen sisters who must team up with Koji’s character. Azizi Donnelly, Jack Griffo, Struggler Jennings, and Brynne Kurland also co-star.

‘The Pitt’ bump: Noah Wyle gaining on Adam Scott in latest Emmy odds
Image
Just days after The Pitt's first season hung up its stethoscope, Noah Wyle's Emmy odds continue to rise.

The Best Actor contender, who plays Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, received rave reviews for the storyline in which he had a mental breakdown after losing yet another patient while working an all-day shift. One month ago, Wyle ranked in fifth place to win Best Drama Actor among the Gold Derby odds, but buoyed by positive word-of-mouth for his performance on The Pitt, he's now in the No. 2 position to claim his first career statuette. He previously received five supporting Emmy bids for ER (1995-99).

The only person standing in Wyle's way, according to the Gold Derby predictions, is Severance star Adam Scott. Lest we forget, Scott also received a goat-load of kudos following the finale of his show, particularly for the scene in which the "innie" and "outie" versions of his character,...

‘Squid Game 2’ Leads Korean Content Dominance on Netflix Global Charts, Ampere Report Reveals
Image
Korean content is crushing it on Netflix, with viewing hours second only to U.S. shows and accounting for a 8% of all global Netflix streams.

A new Ampere Analysis report reveals K-dramas and films represent 17% of the platform’s top 500 non-u.S. titles, with “Squid Game: Season 2” leading the charge at nearly 620 million streaming hours in late 2024.

In the second half of 2024, Korean content was streamed for 7.7 billion hours. Korean content consistently represents 8%-9% of viewing hours on Netflix, ahead of U.K. content at 7%-8%, and Japanese content at 4%-5% of viewing time, the report finds. This is despite hits from the U.K., such as “Black Doves” Season 1 and “The Gentlemen” Season 1, and the growing popularity of anime, which is a key driver of Japanese content viewing on Netflix.

“Squid Game” Season 2 topped Netflix’s global charts in H2 2024, with 619.9 million hours streamed. Its success continues to drive viewership for other Korean content.

‘The Amateur’ Team on That “Challenging” Pool Collapse Scene and Transformative Ending
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from The Amateur, which is now playing in theaters.]

New fear unlocked.

“Even looking into it, you would never get me into it,” James Hawes, director of The Amateur, told The Hollywood Reporter about that terrifying pool-collapse moment in the film at last week’s premiere.

During the scene, Rami Malek’s character, Charles Heller, a CIA decoder, confronts one of the men involved in the murder of his wife, Sarah (played by Rachel Brosnahan), on top of a pool based in Madrid. As Charles isn’t getting the answer he needs about who actually pulled the trigger on his wife, he pulls the trigger on the remote, which shatters the pool’s glass floor, and Mishka Blazhic (Marc Rissmann) falls to his death.

“The idea is inspired in the 1981 novel by a giant aquarium with people swimming in it, and so we’ve taken that and transitioned it and developed it into a sky-top pool,...

‘The White Lotus’ finale shuffles the Emmy odds: Carrie Coon claims the No. 1 spot
Image
Arguably the most talked-about moment (that didn't involve a death or tainted coconut milk) from Sunday's The White Lotus finale was when Carrie Coon's Laurie delivered her "I have no belief system" monologue to Kate (Leslie Bibb) and Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) on their final night in Thailand. The awards buzz immediately started on social media, with fans suggesting it was a "give me that Emmy" type of speech. Take a look:

Inside the Ratings: ‘Adolescence’ Shattered Netflix Records and Cracked the Code on UK Limited Series
Image
“Adolescence” just shattered a Netflix record to become the streamer’s most-watched limited series in its first two weeks, but its massive success falls right into place with Netflix’s lineup of other buzzy projects from the U.K.

“Adolescence” debuted to 24.3 million views in the first four days from its launch March 13 through March 16, making it by far the most-watched TV series during the week of March 10 (the No. 2 title on the list was “Running Point” with just 6 million views). Viewership for “Adolescence” grew a whopping 72.8% to reach 42 million views — a level of engagement not seen from Netflix’s English-language TV programs since the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight, which scored 46.6 million views during the week of Nov. 11, 2024.

With 66.3 million views in just two weeks, “Adolescence” has surpassed the cumulative viewership for “Baby Reindeer” over its first four weeks on the streamer. By comparison, “Baby Reindeer” debuted to...

BAFTA TV Awards Snubs & Surprises: ‘Day Of The Jackal’ Frozen Out; Record Year For Disney+; ‘Supacell’ Makes Drama Series Cut
Image
The BAFTA Television Awards nominations have landed and, as always, there were a few eyebrow raisers from jury members.

The likes of Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs The Post Office were expected to do well, and both series duly delivered with eight and six nominations respectively.

Baby Reindeer has been a darling of the season, and the BAFTA TV Awards will be the big crescendo to its campaign. The beloved Jessica Gunning and creator Richard Gadd both compete for prizes, while the series — which remains the subject of a massive U.S. lawsuit from Fiona Harvey — will compete in the Limited Drama category.

There was also good news for Slow Horses, which bagged six nominations for Apple TV+, including the notable return of Gary Oldman in the Leading Actor category after he missed out in 2024.

Where there is good news, there is also bad news, with a few notable...
