If you’re in the mood for a light-hearted spy adventure with plenty of twists and turns that will make your head spin, Argylle is set to make its streaming debut later this month. Although director Matthew Vaughn has plans for sequels, he stated that he wanted to wait and see how the first film fared. Unfortunately for Vaughn, it wouldn’t become a success at the box office, earning just $92 million worldwide on a budget of $200 million. After its low performance, the star-studded action comedy will hope to find a second life as it premieres on AppleTV+ on Friday, April 12.
The plot synopsis from Apple reads,
“Elly Conway, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, is the reclusive cat loving author of a series of bestselling espionage novels about the impossibly glamorous secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) on a mission to unravel a nefarious spy syndicate. When Elly, with the help...

Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future is one of the acclaimed movies in the X-Men series with an immaculate fanbase but there are certain aspects where fans can’t forgive the filmmaker, particularly for one reason involving Wolverine and Rogue.

The X-Men saga at Fox has ended, but it has created an everlasting impact following the X-Men mythos. However, not everything can be preserved in a film. A director films more scenes than what appears on the big screen. It can certainly be a hard decision, but some leaks of deleted scenes may embroil fans. The same has happened to Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future.

After a weekend with the Oscars sharing the spotlight with the best one-two punch at the box office since July, the VOD and Netflix current home viewing charts lag in importance. “Argylle” (Universal) had a good launch on PVOD and “Damsel,” the kind of far-removed from awards thoughts Netflix original film, clicked with users immediately. Both bits of news are so below the radar that they have little relevance to how things stand in the industry.
“Argylle” — which Apple reportedly acquired for $200 million from “Kingsman” creator Matthew Vaughn and then released theatrically through Universal (with a gross of under $45 million) — came out on PVOD (for $19.99 rental) two weeks earlier than Apple’s earlier “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” And significantly, in doing so, delayed when their streaming subscribers gain access to it.

Winning an Oscar is one of the most significant achievements for anyone in the film industry. Actors dream of it and many directors make films with the prestigious award in mind. Like many things, however, the golden statue means the world to some and is insignificant to many. While some spend their entire lives looking forward to the day that they might win this trophy, many do win but do not hold much sentimentality to them.
Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting
Many actors have won the award but no longer have the trophy in their possession. Then there are those who simply lost it. It would seem that it is quite common for celebrities to not know the whereabouts of their Oscars after winning them. One would assume the reason for the misplacement to be simple, however, it would seem that the tales are probably as interesting as the...

While Marvel has won many hearts and box office records, the studio has rarely been the favorite of award shows such as the Oscars and Golden Globes. These awards are mostly reserved for films that go beyond genre tropes and have elements of arthouse. Marvel’s Black Panther is the only film that was nominated for Best Picture.
However, the prestigious Saturn Awards have constantly honored the franchise as they focus on sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres. Marvel has dominated the Saturn Awards for Best Comic-to-Movie Film category, which is widely regarded as the ‘Oscars for Superheroes’. Ever since it was established in 2013, only one DC film has had the honor of receiving the award, and it is not Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel.

There’re countless moments throughout Tiago Teixeira’s feature debut Custom that play like Barker, Nakata or early Cronenberg. Haunting, sexy, deeply disturbing stuff. Icky, sticky seediness, grained-up and stamped onto videotape, like The Ring made for OnlyFans. Deeply dour, but in a good way.
A micro-budget stab at tackling the nefarious underbelly of online sex work, Custom is – much like Teixeira’s shorts (FrightFest alums Dog Skin and Molar in particular) – a mood piece; more interested and involved with its world and themes than its characters. Although it must be said that leads Abigail Hardingham (Nina Forever) and Rowan Polonski (Kingsman) get thoroughly stuck in as artsy couple Harriet and Jasper; amateur pornographers who find themselves tangled up in a bizarre, VHS-themed nightmare, courtesy of their newest client.

Do you know the truth behind the identity of Agent Argylle? Matthew Vaughn's action rom-com for Apple starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sam Rockwell first debuted in theaters on February 2, 2024, but the film is already going to be available to watch at home just over a month later. Centered around a reclusive, cat-loving author named Elly Conway (Howard), the woman finds herself at the center of an espionage thriller right out of the novels she's written when a real-life spy named Aidan (Rockwell) realizes that her books reflect the actions of an actual spy organization. The film itself has been extremely polarizing, with the majority of critics disliking the picture, although /Film's own Ethan Anderton aligned with the majority of audience reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and liked it quite a bit!

Matthew Vaughn is already deep into producing his next feature film, a caper titled “The Stuntman,” Variety has learned.
Helmed by stunt performer turned director Damien Walters, the film tells the story of two brothers who both become stuntmen.
The feature, which is currently in production, comes from Vaughn’s Marv Studios banner along with Walters’ Zebbo Productions. Last October, they shot in Hampshire, where a local newspaper reported a “1970s-style fun fair” had been installed in the village park, complete with a helter skelter and ferris wheel.
“The Stuntman” is aiming for a launch at Toronto later this year or Sundance in 2025 and is part of a new “Kick-Ass” trilogy, according to Vaughn.
The first film of the trilogy, also produced by Vaughn and directed by Walters, was called “School Fight” and told the story of a teenager who gets into a fight with a love rival at school.

Samuel L. Jackson may be just another actor in Hollywood’s league of iconic actors, but his comedian skills are equally refined despite him not being an officially accredited comedian. A mastermind who never ceases to amuse his audiences, there must have been hardly any instances where the renowned star had appeared onscreen and not made the viewers laugh.

It's been a good two years since Daniel Craig's swan song as James Bond, "No Time to Die" and its divisive ending debuted in theaters. But even before Craig's finale arrived, rumors continued to swirl that Henry Cavill was still in the running to take on the role following Craig's retirement. The "Man of Steel" actor had almost clinched the role back in the early 2000s when longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were casting for 2006's "Casino Royale." Unfortunately for Cavill, he just lost out to Craig -- who reinvigorated the franchise with a fresh take on England's greatest spy.
Cavill has since remained a favorite to play Bond, despite the fact that he's now 40 and would have been in his early 20s the last time he came close to being cast. He's even spoken openly about what he would have done in the role,...

English filmmaker Matthew Vaughn returns to the big screen with another spy action film, Argylle. Known for his distinctive madness and heightened spy reality, as seen in his Kingsman film series, Argylle delivers a perfect blend of action, comedy, and a lot of espionage. Vaughn incorporates little pieces of his life in the movie, with Alfie the Cat being his real-life wife’s (Claudia Schiffer) cat and etching his daughter’s name, Clementine, on a gun in Director Ritter’s office. Argylle follows Elly Conway, a reclusive espionage novel author, who’s suddenly drawn into a similar real-life world of espionage. Conway soon realizes...

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, the third Apple Original Films movie to go wide in cinemas, spied an estimated $35.3M global debut through Sunday, including $17.3M from 78 international box office markets. While that makes it the top title worldwide, overseas and domestically this frame, the ultra-expensive ensemble thriller was harshed on by critics and didn’t get folks rushing out to theaters.
Vaughn’s Marv financed Argylle, then sold it to Apple for $200M. Universal came on for the global theatrical release.
As Anthony has detailed in his in-depth analysis, in the wake of Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, and though exhibition the world over desperately needs content, there are questions to be asked about Apple sustaining these mega-productions that don’t produce outsize numbers.

With Apple’s reported $200 million spy comedy “Argylle” and a proven commercial director in Matthew Vaughn (the “Kingsman” series), the $200 million “Argylle” opened to $18 million.
For Apple, it must give pause around production investments; for theatrical distributor Universal, it’s a disappointment. However, as the only new wide studio release over the last two weeks, it’s disastrous for theaters.
The first three episodes of “The Chosen Season 4” (Fathom), beginning a limited two-week release added about $7.5 million to the total. (The remaining six episodes will be released in upcoming weeks.) We included Thursday’s grosses, which played at the same time as “Argylle” previews. It placed #2, with or without Thursday.
As bad as it was, “Argylle” performed slightly better than expected after a depressed opening day and a low-end C+ Cinemascore. It improved slightly on Saturday from the preview/Friday total. Everything that played this weekend was aided by the lack of alternatives.

Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s spy film, “Argylle,” is in theaters now, and it hasn’t exactly lit up the box office, but we know the director has ambitious plans for the series. He’s already said that he hopes to connect “Argylle” to the world of his other spy series, “Kingsman.” Late last year, he revealed that he has one more spy franchise in the works that could connect all three into one inter-connected spy universe.

"Argylle" arrives in theaters this weekend, and even though critics aren't being overly kind to Matthew Vaughn's latest spy action venture, yours truly had an enjoyable time with the twist-filled story, especially once the hinges are blown off the familiar formula and the "Kingsman" filmmaker really gets to cut loose with a pair of absolutely cuckoo action sequences, the likes of which we've never seen on the big screen before. Initially, I wished the entire movie had that kind of unrestrained madness, but reaching that level of zaniness requires a gradual ascent rather than full-bore throwing you into the insanity from the get-go.
Even if you walked away from "Argylle" frustrated or confused by the movie's many twists and turns, you can't help but admire Vaughn's penchant to take an action movie off the rails. In this case, the third act of...

This article contains full spoilers for Argylle.
Early in the Matthew Vaughn spy thriller/comedy Argylle, actual secret agent Aiden (Sam Rockwell) needs to calm writer of secret agents Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard). Aiden leans in and calmly tells a story about a mission that required him to scale a tremendous height. Rather than look down, Aiden explains, you just have to look at what’s ahead. “What’s right in front of you, Elly?” he asks, staring directly at the camera.
Argylle might not have the same bratty sense of humor that marked Kick-Ass or Kingsman: The Secret Service, but audiences might feel that Vaughn is trolling them in that scene. For months now, trailers for Argylle have teased an amazing twist, suggesting that the real Agent Argylle is something special, something they are not going to want to miss.
But you would have to be really inattentive to miss the reveal.

L to R: Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and John Cena in Argylle, directed by Matthew Vaughn
It feels as though there are one, or two, films that want to “push” against the standard movie-releasing rules as January slowly (with those recent temps it feels like crawling) gives way to February. The big splashy noisy action blockbusters are supposed to be waiting in the wings for the warmer times, but since this is from “Marv maverick” Matthew Vaughn, of course it’s not going to adhere to anyone’s rules. The guiding force behind the Kingsman and King’S Man franchises (and a pivotal entry in the X_MEN multiverse) attempts to get another series going by mixing in a bit more comedy and even a touch of romance and fantasy as he hopes we will be swept up in the world of Argylle.
And just what does the title mean?...

This article contains massive spoilers for "Argylle."
In June of 1970, writer Richard Matheson published the short story "Button, Button." It would inspire a radically unique cinematic adaptation as well as several other official and unofficial retellings. One of its central themes is identity. The characters discover, to their horror, that they don't know themselves, let alone those around them.
That theme is a tenet of the spy genre, and it's no surprise why the genre continues to enjoy such rampant popularity despite the Cold War (arguably the most prolific period for espionage) three decades removed. It has become nearly inextricable from the action genre (thanks in large part to James Bond), and also directly addresses the blurring of reality and fiction where cinema excels. After all, what is spycraft but another form of acting? Furthermore, if someone is called upon to pretend to be someone else for a living, it...

At least we have the added day of Leap Year, and the limited IMAX “Dune: Part 2” screenings on February 25 to add some gross. Even so, this is going to be a tough month at the box office. All told, 2024 could be down 20 percent from last year. We knew going into 2024 that the year would be challenged to meet the $9 billion of 2023 — predictions assessed the domestic target at about $8 billion, about 11 percent down — but it may be a fight to achieve that much.
Only five new wide studio releases will debut this month. February 2 has “Argylle” (Universal), February 9 “Lisa Frankenstein” (Focus), February 14 “Madame Web” (Sony) and “Bob Marley: One Love” (Paramount), and February 23 “Ordinary Angels” (Lionsgate).
January was a bad month, about 14 percent lower than last year with a little over $500 million. February could be less than $400 million, but with all of these new titles hailing from non-franchise and original spaces,...

When I think about Matthew Vaughn's directing career, the image that primarily comes to mind is that of a provocateur, a filmmaker who enjoys prodding his audience a little while bucking familiar conventions. He famously did that with "Kick-Ass" in 2010, doubled down on provocation with the "Kingsman" movies, and is poised to do it again with his latest spy film, "Argylle," which hits theaters today. He seems to prefer entering through the side door rather than taking a head-on approach, opting for more unorthodox methods of storytelling wherever possible.
But that wasn't always the case. 2007's "Stardust," Vaughn's second directorial feature, does not have the cultural reputation as some of his other films, but upon rewatch, it was surprising to see Vaughn operating in a more straightforward zone -- one that doesn't seem as desperate to push the envelope and is confident enough in the nuts and bolts...
