  • Indigenous offers the well-known concept of lost tourists on an exotic location where they meet hostile entity. It highly resembles other fiction movies or even miniseries from Discovery channel. To its credit, it gives nice visual of the setting and there is effort to produce horror, but ultimately it is a straightforward and tired endeavor.

The story might work to its advantage as audience gets exactly what they expect. There's little diversity here, even in recent year there are several movies with same theme. A few college kids take vacation in a beautiful place, and then they are inexplicably going to ominous site even though there are plenty of visible warnings.

Visual is pretty good, the use of location is commendable, although when the encounter happens during nighttime, it reverts to jittery cam. The movie is shot mostly on third person, so it shouldn't encounter this issue like many mockumentary movies. Fortunately, the practical effect works well and it doesn't shy away from displaying the monster instead of maintaining blurry shots.

Script does what it needs to, though surprisingly the actors perform admirably. They mostly look genuine, either through occasionally adequate presentation of the horror or the acting itself. In latter half, the movie opts for different gimmick and tries to broaden the scale, a decent effort but not entirely novel.

Indigenous is exactly one would expect from lost tourist horror theme, it's far from innovative, but it might just be sufficient in the small scope.

A group of annoying American surfers hook up with a couple of locals who take them to an off limits region of the Darien Gap to swim in some magical waters, ignoring the poorly shot on-line video of two guys who go missing there.

About an hour into the film we see the creatures with a jerky camera. It is not that this is a strictly hand held film, it was not. It was just shot poorly to give to the effect of something scary that was not really effective. The film lacks characters and dialogue to make the wait worth while.

If you liked "Tasmanian Devils" (and not many people did) you might like this one too.

Guide: F-bomb (2 languages). Brief Implied sex. No nudity.
  • Aahh, horror and all that it comes with it. Same lines, same plot, same surroundings, same reactions and last but not least, same characters.

Still, a far better production than say, Animal, easily two steps down compared to The Descent, overall, an OK movie, for a night with the friends. While most of it was easily anticipated and had the same moves every horror has for the last 20 years, it managed to act OK, and keep you there, in front of the screen without leaving it too soon or skipping forward. Don't expect anything decent, little below it, but below indeed.

Anyway monster horrors are my favorite, so for me it was nice seeing one more. But I wouldn't recommend it to everyone out there. Maybe try The Cave, or The Ruins instead. Those are more likely to impress.

    Cheers!

PREY is another defunct American horror film, with the only thing going for it the location photography in the Panamanian jungle. Otherwise, it's clichéd business as usual with this weak sauce retread of THE DESCENT about a group of annoying American tourists who fall foul of some indigenous creatures lurking in a cave system.

This is the type of film that offers a little of a lot of things but never a lot of any one thing. It flirts with documentary realism and the found footage genre but never goes whole hog with it. It offers some racial tensions here and there but never explores the topic fully. There's a little gore too but this is never a bloody gore fest and gorehounds are likely to be disappointed by the lack of grue.

What the viewer is left with is an entirely predictable storyline, a bunch of annoying characters screaming and bickering, and others who are present just for eye candy alone. I think it's fair to say that PREY is nothing more than an instantly forgettable horror movie with a nice Panama location and nothing else.

This is an amazingly dreadful movie. Starts off looking like a pretty good C-Grade movie and some fun in the jungle with an unknown beast. That's what it is, but most of the time we run around with a flashlight, screams from the humans and screeches from the beast. We hardly see the beast and have no feelings towards the humans (like who cares if they die). Avoid this one, no joke.

Five friends meet in Panama for a vacation. While partying like your stereotypical back- packers, they hear from Carmen, a native, stories about a beautiful waterfall deep in the jungle.

Ignoring the warnings of Carmen's friend, they set off to find the waterfall.

When they reach it, the group discovers that the stories about a chupacabra (mythical creature, it's name meaning to rip off far better film) are true, and it has developed a taste for humans....

I've always thought that it was easier to review a bad film rather than a good one, because to rant, is to perform erratic poetry about the terrible aspects of a film.

Now, whilst this film is nothing more than a horrible rip off of Neil Marshall's terrific horror, it's just too boring and too full of itself to get angry about the whole thing.

What made it worse was that the makers start the film with a found footage excerpt, and then the story starts just like any other back-packer in peril film, and by the time they decide to refuse to heed to the warnings, you find yourself easily siding with the creature (or creatures as the editing is leading you to believe).

The cast are awful, they all split up several times to,have a bit of cheeky cheeky, and before you know it, we get the old 'shush.....did you hear that?' And '(insert name)......is that you?', just like every other lazy horror film that has been made since the year dot, and it's becoming increasingly more punishing having to sit through dross like this to get to something worthwhile.

On the plus side, the trees that are on screen are giving us oxygen, and the creature isn't terribly designed, but everything else is terrible. Especially when they try to be clever at the end and make the narrative national news.

    Avoid.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I normally do not review films, but this one is so bad I want save people their time and money. The story is a blatant ripoff of the Descent, even the mutant creatures in the film look similar... The dialogue is stale and unoriginal, the actors might be talented but the performances are flat, plot is uninteresting, and the location although beautiful was never utilized. I don't know who funds these kinds of movies, but it's all around awful and painstaking to watch. I could not wait for the movie to be over. Please save your time and money. Avoid this film at all cost... all you see is people running around like idiots in a green jungle. It looks very generic and unpleasant. I kept pausing the movie to see how much time was left, that's how bad it is. The positive reviews on here must be from people associated with the movie just don't know a good movie if it slapped them in the face. Watch Descent if this your type of movie.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I will admit, I only got half an hour into the film before I had to turn it off and find something else to watch. While the photography is beautiful - the company obviously had a good DP, the cast of characters is entirely unsympathetic and filled with the entire inventory of Film School 101 clichéd, mail-order characters: the charismatic couple with the saccharine, please-get-a-room constant kissy-facing; the pathetic, downtrodden loser hoping to make it big; the unattached but beautiful female friend who serves no real plot purpose; and the drunken, foul- mouthed jerk. The plot is not new: friends go for a coming-of-age, last-gasp vacation and die horribly. With a soundtrack alternating between inaudible dialog and ear-splitting music, and no one whose fate is worth caring about, it's simply un-watchable.
  • What happens when you put low-budget, unfamiliar actors, and horror movie together? Usually something really bad. However, that was not the case with this movie. It was incredibly entertaining. Unlike many horror films that are made on the cheap, this was very well acted and directed.

The monster was actually shown. Unlike as often is the case in low-budget horror films where the monster looks like someone who's simply wearing a Halloween mask, the creature in this was very well crafted. It kind of resembled the monsters from The Descent, except this monster could see, and it had raptor-like teeth.

The scenery, primarily a jungle, is always a fun atmosphere, because the forest is like the ocean; both entirely different worlds unto themselves.

For anyone who likes movies like the aforementioned Descent, I highly recommend this movie. It's not as good as Descent, but come on that was a highly original movie. However, if you liked that, you should like this.

I gave this a 7-star rating. It's about time I found a horror film that was good. I've seen so many that stink out loud. Again, I recommend this to all those who are horror movie junkies.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the only movie I have ever reviewed, because I have to warn other to NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. There are many other people saying that "the story isn't original" but if a movie can be unoriginal, but good then it doesn't really matter, does it? I don't care about the unoriginality, I care about everything else. Let's start with the lighting. The daytime scenes are so bright that you almost can't see anything except the actors faces. During the night scenes, it looks like it takes place during the day, it's so bright. Please turn the brightness down for your horror movie. Now I'm going to move on to the characters. The characters are an ensemble of unidentifiable and unmemorable teenagers that are indistinguishable from each other. I couldn't remember a thing about any of the characters except that one of the girls wanted to be a veterinarian or something. There is nothing to make you care about any of them, so their deaths don't carry any weight. There is also this other character that is a local that tells them "I went to this waterfall when I was a kid, but DONT GO THERE because now there is a monster in the jungle." The main characters just go "oh, that waterfall sounds cool, so let's go drive 70 MILES to go there." The local guy realizes that they didn't listen to him and drives after them, and during this part I told my dad "watch him find the EXACT place they park" and he FINDS WHERE THEY PARK. (Laughing too hard) He then starts to look for them, gets scared by some noises, and then LEAVES after just driving 70 miles to go after them. The audio in this movie is not memorable at all. One of the characters speaks to one of the local girls who is with them in English, but then she speaks back in Spanish? I dont know why they can't just choose a language to speak in. The main character starts to make a livestream asking for help, but then finds his friend who ran away from the monster with some of the girls and he is bleeding to death. He records his friend dying on the floor for the livestream and the first thing he says to him is "where are the girls?" I DON'T KNOW, maybe they RAN AWAY?? How about some concern for your FRIEND who is DYING right in front of you? The military is called by that local guy and they kill the monster only after one of the girls dies right in front of them and they didn't even attempt to stop it. Good job military guys, you were the best characters and you failed to save people even after showing up. They kill the chupacabra and that's the end. Nothing to think about. No questions left unanswered, they show everything that happens. Characters that don't listen. Horrible lighting. Forgettable sound. Magic characters that can find a car 70 miles away. Characters that are determined enough to drive 70 miles after people, but aren't determined enough to help them when they actually get there. Characters that don't care about their friends. What even happened in this movie? I put too much effort into this review. Just please don't watch this movie.
  • I'm not really a horror fan so when get ready to watch one I read some best and worst reviews on the movie to lower or raise my expectations. With this one the reviews were around 50/50 but not a lot of users. So I took the chance, watched it and will give my 2 cents. First of all, I was entertained and not bored a single minute. For that I would already rate above 5. The unknown actors almost seem to "grow" both in their role and performance as the movie progresses. Pretty decent performance, job well done. The setting, fear and tension are convincing as well as the reactions of the characters. The monster is realistic although it does look like a monster type of the descent movies like someone said earlier. All in all, it's a nice popcorn & beer movie to watch with your girlfriend to get a nice scare.
  • We've seen tons of horror films from the past filled with clichés like foreign tourists who dares to travel in an unknown place despite warnings from locals due to hidden horrors. Unlike The Blair Witch Project, this one is quite self-aware rather than preventing mystical legend of "Chupacabra" from outside world. True story: a day after watching Furious 7, I was curious about this low-budget horror film thanks to its dark background poster. Therefore, I decided to watch it alone with few audiences inside a theater. Surprisingly, while it has flaws ranging from typical horror clichés to few shortcomings, Indigenous scares me but not too much. While the entire cast is new, their acting is spot-on. Also, there's no sign of any CGI effects, only practical ones. Overall, I recommend everyone to watch this rare gem.
  • Takes half the movie until anything horror-ish even start to happen and then it takes an additional 15 minutes until we actually get a look of the creatures that are suppose to be the main attraction of the movie.

And although they look reasonably creepy, it just isn't enough to save the movie and for the more-part they aren't really anywhere to be seen, occasionally because they are a bit away but mostly because of shaky camera work and the fact that they seem to do most their work at night-time.

The characters are also dull one-tracked party hardy boys and girls with little likability factor to them, which doesn't help.

So yeah really not recommended, unless you are one of the few people who liked 'ANIMAL (2014)' cause that's similar to this. And that was also terrible.
  • Warning: Spoilers
First 30 minutes is designed to bore you to death as 5 cretins bond and drink and surf. In the end you are supposed to care about them but I fast forwarded most of it so don't really know their backstory or remotely care.

One idiot sees on the internet a story of missing teens 70 mile from them and so the five load up along with a girl called Carmen with a very nice bottom and blindly set off to check it out.

Carmen disappears and there is a rustle in the jungle causing mass panic. It's not like the jungle would have creatures wandering around doing stuff so any noise must be something horrific..

They do some stupid stuff like running around screaming and in different directions instead of staying together. Then when it gets dark they all turn on their torches instead of saving some just in case. Then they get taken by some white mole thing from Descent and some die horribly.

Then some Spanish stuff happens I did not understand and a video of their predicament goes viral and we have a happy ending for some.

I may have missed something as I used the FFW button a lot. The acting was not awful but hardly good. It borrows a lot from better movies like Descent and The Cave but is ultimately a pile of rancid rubbish.

And it's funny as I thought The Descent was brilliant but thought this film utter codswallop. Save yourself 90 minutes and be warned it's that bad.

I don't want to use the term amateur because that would be disrespectful to good amateur films. This movie is horrible. I won't bother writing the plot because it has been done and just want to get straight to the point. This is extremely cookie cutter. It's as if the director took a 5$ class on horror films from fiverr.com from some horror junkie who writes fanfics on the nosleep subreddit. Starts out with "party" music blaring every 5 seconds to show that the group is happy and young and totally not about to get into some stuff. There is a mediocre sob story of how 1 guy doesn't want to live at home again because college loans etc. are weighing him down. So this is the last hurrah! Awesome right?! No. That has been beaten to death. Just like the director should be. They go into the spooky jungle and indigenous people try to kill them. Some escape and see the news report blah blah blah...it really is one of the worst horror films I have ever seen. It has to be tied for last place with fear.com. Don't bother. Trust me, go make your own horror film with your cell phone in your backyard and it will be better.

Had to FWD the first 15 minutes as it was all loud music and just plain predictable partying. FWD it to 30 minutes, and it got even MORE cheesy. Absolutely ridiculous film. Look, Americans - if you're going to make a movie ABOUT chupacabra - (which, of course, Google marks as a SPELLING MISTAKE - SMH), make it ABOUT the darn creature. This movie should have had a $10,000 budget - just to fly the actors there. Shaky cameras off the bat when they were getting attacked, and I can't even finish it. But, let me guess? There's an "American hero" at the end who takes the chupacabra out???!!! Lol. Just like in every movie, Americans allllways come to "save the day" in the end!!! So out of touch with reality.
  • RELEASED IN 2014 and directed by Alastair Orr, "Indigenous" covers events in Panama when five college-age youths vacation there for some fun in the sun. Things go awry when they visit a beautiful waterfall in a forbidden area of the jungle.

This is a professionally made monster-in-the-forest flick with a competent no-name cast highlighted by gorgeous Panamanian locations and winsome Laura Penuela in a bikini. Precious Lindsey McKeon is another highlight on the female front.

My only problems are that (1.) the plot's hackneyed, particularly bringing to mind "The Last Tribe" (2009), which is marginally better in some ways. Other flicks come to mind, like "Touristas" (2007) and "The Ruins" (2008), which are superior to the other two. (2.) There's no depth in the plot: This is a monster movie focusing on partying youths getting chased in the forest by savage creatures and that's it. As such, the film's not very compelling despite the horror and thrills. On the bright side, the last act throws in an unexpected curve ball and shows that the movie wasn't micro-budget. Another positive is that this is arguably the best and most realistic chupacabra flick out there (keeping in mind that I've only seen four such movies).

Speaking of which, 'chupacabra' is a Spanish word, which literally means "goat-sucker" (from chupar "to suck" and cabra "goat"). There are two varieties of this cryptozoological beast: (1.) a reptile-like creature with leathery/scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back; and (2.) a hairless form of canine with a pronounced spinal ridge and prominent eye sockets, fangs, and claws. "Indigenous" interestingly features neither of these, although the creatures come closer to the first description, I suppose.

THE MOVIE RUNS 1 hour 26 minutes was shot in Panama. WRITER: Max Roberts.

    GRADE: B-/C+ (5.5/10)

    Prey

Prey or indigenous as it's also known will draw many comparisons to Neil Marshall's 'The Descent'. But not comparable in a good way. Marshall's film was masterfully shot, edited and performed, this dull rip off by Alastair Orr is riddled with shaky dialogue, shaky cam and an even more shaky script. A group of friends visit a forbidden part of the jungle in Panama. The Indigenous carnivorous locals get a taste for their young flesh and we end up with yet another cliched horror flick.

Orr's film is a painting by numbers affair and amateurishly executed. The night time scenes in which most of the action takes place are mostly unfathomable. When daylight comes the scary monsters are indeed just left over prosthetics from 'The Descent'. The young cast offer eye candy. There's the usual complimentary bikini babe and blue eyed white toothed males with their ripped abs and sun tan. None of this helps the regurgitated script. The actual build up is more interesting than the main event. The viral social media element of the film is refreshing before becoming cheesy and ridiculous. Unfortunately this glimmer of hope can't save the movie from being mostly a carbon copy of better movies that have gone before. For every one 'Jaws' there's ten 'Sharknado's' Or in this case for every one 'Descent' there's going to be a dozen movies like 'Prey'. It's not an entirely horrible film, just a sad reality that originality is becoming scarce not scary.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Traveling to Panama together, a group of friends are talked into visiting a mysterious waterfall deep in the jungle only to discover the native folklore of a deadly creature living there is true and must find a way of stopping the creature to get out alive.

This one wasn't all that bad but certainly does have some major problems about it. One of the film's biggest problems here is the actual handling of the build-up of the group getting to the main gist of the film which is supposed to be them stranded in the jungle with the creature. Here, it's way too much time of them screwing around with the locals and hanging out doing nothing but ragging on each other that it really starts to get aggravating waiting around for them to get going. It takes up so much time that there's never any real interest gleaned from these segments which just go on for so long that it really starts to wane the interest level in the beginning of this one. The fact that this one really relies on so much time here ripping off other movies that most of what happens here isn't that original or creative and leads to so many portions of the movie that are just cheaply- done imitations of other scenes from other films out there where it takes this one into really familiar territory as scenes of them lurking in the jungle or exploring the area. As well, there's even the feeling later on in the final twenty minutes of this one changing tone for the worst as it inexplicably turns into a more epic worldwide feel with the social media around the world that really takes out a lot of steam at the wrong moment. This is quite a downer of an ending that really doesn't have too much to do with the film as a whole, really helping to lower this one as well. There's a few solid points that works here. This one works quite a lot of mileage out of the location utilized here, with the rather scenic location given a nice look here that makes this one quite creepy as they walk through the jungle. That helps the big scenes in the later half when they start getting attacked by the creature which is quite fun here when this one generates some really decent ambushes. That leads to a few decent moments that generates the appropriate amount of fear and chaos that comes about from their attacks as it winds through the later stages here as it really comes off rather nicely. The creature itself looks great when we get to see it, but overall it's not enough to really help this one.

Rated R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and Brief Nudity.

    Warning: Spoilers
There is a trend in horror movies these days that I absolutely abhor; action in near total darkness. "Indigenous" follows this trend. Virtually every scary or creepy thing happens in an irritating blanket of impenetrable shadows. It's not intriguing. It's not immersive. It's iritating as Hell.

The plot is played out to death, and formulaic. A group of party-hearty twenty-somethings goes somewhere that they know virtually nothing about because they think it's cool. Group experiences creepy events. Group panics and bolts into the darkness. People fall. People trip. The group splits up. Members of the group are killed by a mysterious creature one by one as they become separated. Members of the group promise other members that they're going to be all right. "We're going to make it out of here, I promise." "I won't let anything happen to you, I promise." Maker of said promise is the next to die.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat. This movie is so predictable that you can pretty much call out who is going to die, and when, where, and how. The idiotic decision to shoot and present this film in near total darkness doesn't help set the mood, unless the mood that you're looking for is to feel increasingly irritated with the movie.
  • For a low budget, Indigenous works out really well. The movie moved along at a nice pace, the characters were all very natural, and could act their parts with conviction (something usually lacking in low budget films).

The plot was quite good, based around the idea of a group of young tourists a bit bored with the standard fare on offer at the beach resort. They are told of a wonderful waterfall, deep in the jungle, but are also warned about the danger lurking there... blood thirsty beasts, the Chupacabra.

Yes, young folks make stupid choices all the time, nevermind how many warnings about the risks. So off this group go to find the find of their lives, an isolated and idyllic waterfall deep in the jungle.

The action begins not long after reaching the waterfall & pool. When night falls, character by character are in grave danger of being picked off by the Chupacabra. These actual creatures looked really good too. Plus the blood & gore was realistic.

As this type of movie goes, I'd say it's well worth a watch.
  • These reviews are too critical; chances are if you have come across this movie as a suggestion, you like creature features. The creature is actually scary looking such as in the cave. It's nice imagery and entertaining. Yes it's low budget poor acting blah blah blah but it's not some stupid creature feature, I recommend watching!
  • josenelias26 February 2020
Similar to the film The Ruins but with a kind of humanoid and bloodthirsty monster. Very weak actors, filmed poorly. You may watch it, but it's just to pass the time.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Just like all the rest of the horror tripe produced over the past 18 or so years, this is a rip-off of a valid horror movie. They lool like the creatures from "The Descent" and even live in a cave. You know what o expect from there... only you actually want to see most of this cast get wasted as painfully as possible. Don't the directors from this new generation of directors know that you're supposed to make the characters sympathetic to the audience? All swagger and no brains. Who actually goes into te woods or a jungle without reaprovisins o at least lighters? Only one is present, and it does little good down in a cave. The only difference with this one is that the creatures are 'outed' online and folks respond. It's still the same plot, same creatues, different country. Had these folks made a fire, things would have gone much diferently. Just a fire... Of course, they make all the same mistakes other horror movies do every single time: they separate even when the body count kicks in. People stand by an scream, run or just try to pull them away while their friends are torn apart, rather than just defend them. Can ANYONE make a decent and well thought out horror movie these days? It IS filmed pretty well, and the director does seem to know what to do with the cameras... just has no clue how to be original or present a story not already done to death. If I were Neil Marshall, I'd be mad as hell...
  • Below mediocre, thoroughly amateurish attempt making a survival horror film in the jungles of Panama. The film is about a group of friends who decide to explore an impenetrable area called the Darién Gap.

The Darién Gap (Spanish: Región del Darién or Tapón del Darién) is a break in the Pan-American Highway consisting of a large swath of undeveloped swampland and forest within Panama's Darién Province in Central America and the northern portion of Colombia's Chocó Department in South America.

Having learned from a friend about a beautiful waterfall in that area, which has a pool very good to swim in, they decide to undertake an expedition despite the friend's warning about a vicious creature that inhabits the area. This creature, the Chupacabra, is thought to be an evil spirit inhabiting the body of a half-man, half-animal being.

The film opens fairly straightforward as most films in this genre do. A group of tourists enjoying themselves, sucking up the atmosphere, drinking, making love to their girlfriends etc., etc. Then they decide that rather then surfing at the coast, they do something adventurous and explore this impenetrable area called the Darién Gap. They find the waterfall as the friend said. They then bathe in the pool below the waterfall for a while, till one of the couple decides to leave and do deeper into the jungle. Then all hell breaks loose...

The director, I feel, is unable into inject a real spark into this film. The actors that were chosen did their jobs as per the script. But the script itself is so obviously dull and predictable, that we already know what direction the film is headed at. In the past I saw a survival action-horror film that set the benchmark for all movies of its genre. This film was Predator, a 1987 film directed by John McTiernan. Also note that The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter is also a survival-horror film. Basis of such movies is an outer-space alien killing off humans.

More films you may like: Dawn of the Dead(1978), Tremors(1990), Jaws(1975), Shakma(1990), Prince of Darkness(1987), 30 Days of Night(2007).
