Sparkling Procedurals Give Gallic Producers a French Touch
Image
Move over Scandinoir, because Gallic producers are giving crime the French Touch.

Beloved at home and lucrative abroad, a new strain of audience inclusive procedurals has paved inroads on the international market. Indeed, fueled by the earlier success of long-running series “Candice Renoir,” and made stratospheric by smashes “Hpi” and “Tandem,” the so-called “light crime” genre has become a new French delicacy.

“The genre skillfully blends criminal investigations with everyday moments, creating a balance between mystery and the light, family tone,” says Mediawan Rights exec Randall Broman. “[We’ve seen] a growing demand for lighter, more reassuring content, while viewers appreciate the captivating plots without excessive violence. This ability to blend intrigue and humor makes French producers leading players in the genre.”

Megahit “Hpi” delivered 11 million viewers at home and has sold to over 110 territories, while the U.S. remake will premiere later this month on ABC and Hulu. Other recent successes in...

French Procedurals Grip Global Market With a Light Touch
Image
Buoyed by a voracious global market, hampered by pandemic era challenges but hungry all the same, French TV exports reached record highs in 2021, racking up €375.9 million (404 million) in worldwide sales.

While an uptick in foreign pre-buys helped benefit multi-season series like “Call My Agent!,” “Derby Girl” and “High Intelligence Potential,” those three comedic series share another quality irresistible to international buyers.

“[There’s a] lightness combined with authenticity,” explained Emmanuelle Dessureault, who oversees acquisitions for public broadcaster Radio-Canada.

“French content often has a light touch, which does not take away from the depth of the subjects addressed, or the stories told. The main characters are lively and full of gusto, while the subject matter can be frank without taking itself too seriously. That’s what distinguishes French content; that’s what makes it interesting.”

Speaking at a daylong conference, held as part of the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris, the Quebecois acquisitions exec exchanged...

Foreign Sales of French TV Programs Drew $304 Million in 2018
French programs have brought in €276 million ($304.7 million) from international sales and foreign investment through co-productions in 2018. It marks the third highest performance of the last 25 years, according to a study unveiled by the French National Film Board, or Cnc, and TV France International.

Sales of French programs alone accounted for $190 million (compared with €205 million last year), driven by animation and fiction shows. The report, unveiled during the Rendez-Vous With French Cinema hosted by TV France International in Biarritz, also said that the rise of international streaming services has bolstered the sales of French TV programs, in particular animation and crime series such as “Baron noir,” which was acquired by Amazon U.K., HBO Go Scandinavia and Spain and Ivi in Russia.

Dominique Boutonnat, the new president of the Cnc, said the export of French TV programs has been thriving in spite of the competitive marketplace. “It is key to continue...
