  • The present, ridiculously low score prompted me to write a short review.

The setting, the story, the characters of Big School are both typically British and universal, and though each character is well defined by their role, each actor in the very talented cast is allowed to show their individual craft, sometimes genius, a freedom that, especially in the experienced hands of David Walliams, Catherine Tate and Philip Glenister, produces some high quality comedic characterizations of the archetypal figures that we encounter in the odd, but equally classic school setting that they populate.

I can't fault this production, having very much enjoyed the first two episodes, and I'm rather looking forward to seeing the rest of this well-thought-out, well-produced new BBC series.
  • Still mad that it ended only because david walliams decided to start a sketch show. how dare he do that to catherine tate. rude.

David Walliams created and starred in this traditional family sitcom set in Greybridge Secondary School in North London. It had an irritatingly catchy theme tune.

The school setting allows it to have an interplay between the various eccentric teachers and the pupils who found the teachers boring. Walliams played the socially awkward chemistry teacher Mr Church who has the hots for new French teacher Miss Postern (Catherine Tate) who is not very good at French, never been to France and thinks she is really beautiful and men fall over for her. In a sense that is true. Mr Gunn (Philip Glenister) is the macho PE teacher who also has the hots for Miss Postern and vies with Mr Church for her attention. He has a nice line in smutty humour.

Mr Barber (Steve Speirs) is the disorganised Geography teacher who is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. He returned in the second series demoted as the caretaker. Speirs stole the show with his hound dog face. Mr Hubble (James Greene) is the head of science who is too old and confused. Julie T Wallace is the lab assistant who is infatuated with Mr Church.

Frances De La Tour is the headmistress who is too drunk to care about the teachers and the pupils. Daniel Rigby is the music teacher who dreams of being a famous singer-songwriter.

The series was never very funny but it was amiable enough and something you can watch with all the family. I think Walliams put too much effort with his characters and needed to pepper the script with stronger and more off beat humour.

So the BBC released a promo for this show, and two comedians who I like very much (Walliams and Tate) were featured in it. I thought, "I should watch it". I missed the first three episodes but caught up on iPlayer, and may I say I'm glad I did.

This show is underrated by other reviewers on IMDb, it really is a good 30 minutes of British TV. The characters are good and the episodes are entertaining and funny on most occasions. It's not THE BEST comedy show there is, but it really is on my top list for the moment. I recommend trying the series on iPlayer, it's worth it. Walliams and Tate work well together on screen, and despite having some sadly true moments, it has very laugh out loud comical moments.

    Warning: Spoilers
I read about this new comedy show in the TV guide, and obviously the cast appealed to me, but also I did not know many British sitcoms set in a school, so I was definitely up for giving it a go, and I'm glad I continued with it. Basically the show is set in Greybridge (secondary) School, and follows the amusing and eccentric activities and relationships between the teachers, and of course their methods of teaching and perhaps ineffective authority over the students. Characters include awkward and disciplined chemistry teacher Mr. Church (David Walliams, also writing), new beautiful French teacher Miss Postern (Catherine Tate) who has secret and unfulfilled feelings for, P.E./sports teacher Mr. Gunn (Philip Glenister) who constantly acts like a filthy and cocky pervert, no nonsense and unusual headmistress Ms M. Baron (Vicious's Frances De La Tour), eccentric and interfering drama teacher Mrs. Janine Klebb (Joanna Scanlan), wannabe songwriter and singing star music teacher Mr. Luke Martin (BT adverts star Daniel Rigby), often depressed and unorganised geography teacher Mr. Barber (Steve Speirs), elderly head of science Mr. Hubble (James Greene) who often has no clue what is going on, strange lab assistant Pat (Julie T. Wallace), and school secretary Daphne (3 Non-Blondes' Jocelyn Jee Esien). Also starring as the students are Joivan Wade as Manyou, Georgia Thompson as Beyonce, Carla Ryan as Tina and Matthew Fenton as Nicholas. I agree with some critics it may seem old-fashioned in some aspects, but you can follow the on-going things, like the arguments between Mr. Church and Mr. Gunn, Mr. Church pathetically trying to prove himself to and gain affection from Miss Postern, and the many unusual events and slapstick moments in the classrooms and hallways, it is a worthwhile and fun comedy series. Good!
  • I found this show to be fun to watch. It wasn't anything groundbreaking but the chemistry and banter between Williams and Tate was very fun.

The humor never put me on the defensive and was a nice balance between outright laughs and self deprecating groaners.

All the teachers were likable enough, even the "amomnible" gym teacher!

Hilarious. Very clever, smart comedy! Has me literally laughing out loud every episode, the acting is superb. There is a continuous story line with every episode which is very engaging, the situations are hilarious and the jokes and comments are simply hilarious. Humor is subjective but I think this show is a total winner. I can't wait until its release on DVD! And I am really hoping for future seasons of this show. Tate is just amazing in this show, and all the actors are great. Love the characters they have come up with.....just hilarious! Good job to the creators and I really hope that there are going to be many more seasons.

Having read the "bad" reviews by people who'd seen the FIRST episode only - made me write this review out of disgust! I really enjoyed this series, it's well written, laugh out loud funny, even touching and the acting & characterisation is excellent. Well you can't please everyone when it comes to humour but I think they've done a very good job of this one. One of the best sitcoms I've seen for years. In the tradition of Porridge and Faulty Towers, yes, it's in the old school but I think there's a lot of us out there wanting to see something fresh but classic. I can't be the only person out there who's fed up with so called comedy where they're so scared of making an ism that there's no comedy left just "laughs" based on bodily fluids and rude words for body parts. I left THAT kind of humour behind when I left primary school. So well done BBC, please can we have more Sir?
  • What a waste of talent and my time. I want that 30 minutes back! This cast MUST have known they had recorded a plonker ! Truly bad writing...date stereotypes; Drunk teachers, hyper masculine Phys Ed. Teacher, Homophobia gags, misogyny dressed up as humour. Truly unfunny lines - not even bad enough to be described as "inappropriate" humour, just simply silly and not in a "Carry On" way. Was the programme made with ONE camera? Seriously! Each take looked like it was recorded due to actors being unable to recall lines. A series of Edited lines within an inch of their lives does not make a scene! A starry cast wasted! Walliams is simply unfunny ! School report? D- for effort. Will have to do better !
  • Big School is a win for comedy fans. Drawing inspiration from The Office, Alan Partridge, and even older comedies such as Dear John (Philip Glenister's character channels Kirk St Moritz, especially in Episode 4), there are some incredibly funny scenes.

Better still, because it is character-based - much like The Office and others (Partridge, Frasier) that feature anti-hero cringe characters - it improves on repeat viewing. Familiarity with Big School's characters only makes them funnier.

For some reason Big School has attracted many lukewarm and even highly critical reviews. I recommend that new viewers give it a chance and watch at least a couple of episodes, preferably re-watching them, before dismissing it.

After all, would Frances De La Tour pick a turkey?

With a cast like this, I was expecting big things. Sadly what I got was a tired, old fashioned, unfunny, misogynistic program. Clichéd, cringe-worthy and lacking in anything approaching laughs. If you're a fan of The Dick Emery/Benny Hill school of 1970s sexist sitcoms then It'll be right up your street, but not for me. It had me squirming in my seat with embarrassment - true car crash stuff. Whatever happened to the original talent of the likes of Walliams, Tate, et al? As for Philip Glenister, well all I can say is bye, bye career - The Gene Genie will be turning in his grave. Definitely one to miss! Though having said that - maybe watch it for the painful experience, because it won't be coming back for a second series!

    Warning: Spoilers
I love this show and so does everyone else I know. It's brilliantly written, the characters are superb. I'm not sure why some people find it so awful but then each to his own. There are loads of so-called comedies on the TV that I find downright terrible and yet others love them. So hey-ho. The teachers in this are brilliantly portrayed. I like all of them but my favourite is played by Phil Glenister. The way he holds his mouth and the way he walks inspire laughs straight away. Perhaps the bad reviewers are taking it all too seriously - maybe they think it is meant to be serious or something. But this is what it is. A very funny play on teachers - making them think and act like competitive children. That's the core of the comedy. I do hope they make another series because I know many people that would love to see it! I think episode five was my favourite.
  • Big School is a fantastic comedy show starring David Walliams, Catherine Tate, Philip Glenister, Francis de la Tour and Steve Speirs. Each episode is well written and each character stands out for me. Mr Gunn is particularly hilarious with some of the comments he makes, much to the disapproval of Mr Church, Mr Gunn reminds me of Jay from the inbetweeners a bit. And the Greybridge teaching staff wouldn't be a school without head teacher Ms Baron played by Francis de la Tour. Almost everything Ms Baron says is an instant gag plus with the Walliams and Glenister combination, Big School makes for a wonderful comedy show with gags every minute! Catherine Tate as Miss Postern makes the show for me, without her, there wouldn't be frantic quarrelling between Mr Church and Mr Gunn in almost every episode. There's heart-warming moments in the series as well as well crafted dialogue between the teaching staff, Series 1 episode 4 being my favourite episode so far!

It's a 10/10 for Big School, I would highly recommend it, although it can be crude at times so only to those 15 and up! Can't wait to see the last 2 episodes in Series 2 and hopefully Big School will return for a Series 3 next year!

Being English and growing up with such gems as Monty Python, Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore, The Goodies etc. etc.,I just have one thing to say; Big School is just not funny! If this is the best they can do then British comedy is in BIG trouble. I started watching episode one and seriously thought about turning it off but decided I would sit through it, feeling sure it would get better; it didn't. However, I turned the TV on again for episode 2, optimistically thinking that it couldn't get any worse than the previous episode but again I was wrong. At least I had had one little chuckle during the first episode whereas in the second one I never even cracked my face. I am afraid it is now time to throw in the towel, I can't take anymore!
  • There are so much more worse shows on BBC that it is a tragedy that a great show as this was cancelled because of bad reviews. I personally feel that it because those reviewers expected to see more teenagers doing stuff than the bumbling teachers on the show. Probably searched "Big B*** School " and ended up watching the show. Therefore the low rating! Friends of Jimmy Saville?

Never have I seen a show with so many of my favorite people in it be so terrible. I mean Walliams and Tate have a long history of fantastic comedy but I found myself not even cracking a smile. Very disappointed, every joke is executed painfully and badly. After watching the first episode I never wanted to see it again, but I made myself watch the second to be fair, as pilots/first episodes can sometimes be terrible. But no, after watching the second episode I don't think I'll be watching this again, I have no idea how anyone can find this funny in the slightest. It's not even a "so bad it's good" type of thing either. I have no clue how comedy masterminds came up with something so bad.

The cast is great! I wish they didn't end it. Katherine Tate is fabulous.
  • This is a really great series with marvellous character development. If you went to school in the UK, Big School is definitely worth a watch since there will no doubt be moments which will spark memories (key the science experiments...)

You end up growing fond of the people and actually hoping things will go well for them. Lots of laughs; a play of human weakness and desire and ineptitude and the show we put up to make up for all our shortcomings.

A slightly lighter, prolonged version of The History Boys - and that is basically as good as it gets in my book.

    --------- ---------- ---------- ---------- -------- --------- --------- --------- -------- ----------- --------- ----------- ----------- ----------- ------------- ----------- ----------- ------- -------- -------- --------- ------- --- (filling up extra IMDb lines - ridiculous rule)

I can't believe that I just wasted half an hour of my life watching this tosh. And I can't believe that David Walliams wrote it. It's so bad. Despite its stellar cast it has no likable (or believable) characters, no jokes, no laughter and no place on the BBC. It looks like a cheap imitation of Jack Whitehall's Bad Education and that was pretty dire itself.

I seriously wonder how much Mr Wallians (and the mysterious Dawson Brothers - are they a circus act?) got paid to create this unfunny mess. And did it really take all of them to write it? Philip Glenister takes on the role of the dumb, insensitive PE teacher which has been seen a thousand times before from The Grimleys to Teachers (where it was done so much better). Catherine Tate goes into automatic putting on a series of silly voices and mugging a lot to the camera but without saying any funny lines. There's a fat caretaker who, get this, eats a lot. And the children playing the school kids sit there in dumb silence most of the time perhaps thinking to themselves "is this really a comedy?. I know that's what I'm thinking.

But perhaps the biggest disappointment is Mr Walliams himself who by accident, or design, seems to have created a character who has not had one single funny line.

Big School? Big Con more like.

One of the best comedy series in a while. I love it. David Walliams is just the best. I've watched it loads of times and it's still as funny. David needs to do more episodes like this.
  • Big School is a sitcom that has a lot going for it. David Walliams' popularity has never been higher thanks to his stint on BGT and he is ably supported by people like Catherine Tate and the very talented Daniel Rigby. With all that talent behind it though 'Big School' should be so much better, smarter and funnier than it actually is.

It is an inconsistent show. One moment you can be laughing at a well written joke but then you sit in silence while lots of unfunny things happen for the next five minutes. Some of the characters aren't really that funny and the plot lines waver from being good to terrible week on week. Although the attempt at a 'will they/won't they?' romance is nice, when it is lost in what really is a collection of school based sketches it doesn't work.

It doesn't seem to know where it sits in tone either. One minute it warrants its 9:30pm slot and then it does lots of childish jokes that wouldn't look out of place in a family comedy slot instead.

I know we're not blessed with a lot of decent sitcoms in the UK at the moment and that 'Big School' is a lot better than some of the others we have to endure, but even so, it's a show that should and could be good rather than one that is.
  • Big School is an enjoyable comedy set in a school. It's quite funny with the last episodes of the first season (the exam & the school trip to France) being especially funny. The cast are great, yes the characters are quite exaggerated and the comedy is quite broad and often low brow (even a bit of toilet humour). The main character Keith Church (David Walliams) is a nerdy Chemistry teacher who has a crush on the French teacher Sarah Posterns (Catherine Tate). His rival for her affections is Trevor Gunn (Philip Glenister), the lecherous gym teacher who lives at home with his mother. Some of the other standout characters are the headmistress Ms Baron (Frances De La Tour) who breaks all the rules and the sad sack geography teacher Gareth Barber (Steve Spiers).

Just had the misfortune to catch an episode of this awful comedy, who wrote this? Do they actually sit down and watch it themselves and think yeah that's good, what do the actors think? I mean it has a good cast, do they think this is good? This is so typical of British comedy these days, this could have been produced back in the sixties or seventies, Please Sir was funnier and that is not praise! I don't know what the first series was like, not great judging by the reviews so how did it get a second series? Oh wait it's the BBC isn't it, flog a dead horse for all it's worth like Last of the Summer Wine, I have run out of all the things I can say about this without using foul language so I will stop now.
  • Well now it's plainly obvious who was the funny one in Little Britain and I'll give you a hint - it wasn't the tall one...how this was even funded to be broadcast I will never know. Honestly, I never usually write reviews but I couldn't sleep just thinking how pathetic this was, it is an absolute insult to intelligence, utterly brainless and boring - I mean, pinch me! who came up with this crap?!!! I also wonder who paid the reviewers who rated it positively? Walliams needs a new job as does Tate (not that she was ever very funny) what a waste of time, seriously this is like one of those French films that just got made to use up a pre-allocated budget.

    Lame.
  • Unlike David Walliams other work ( little Britain ,seasons 1-2 not three and come fly with me ) this is just, how do you say it. Boring. Yes there is an ok plot and some decent jokes but the acting and everything else was just bad.
