Want to catch the 2025 Academy Awards Best Picture nominees on the big screen? AMC Theatres has you covered — the theater chain has announced two marathon events that will screen nine of this year’s 10 contenders.
The first iteration of the marathon will be a two-day event screening the films, held on February 22nd and March 1st. The second installment will also be hosted on March 1st, and will be a 24-hour format marathon, in which the nine nominees will be screened successively.
This year’s Best Picture nominees are: Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance, and Wicked. The only film not included in the upcoming AMC marathon will be Emilia Pérez, possibly because of the fact that it is a Netflix original.

The State of the Race
If there was any more proof needed that the Oscars have become more international, we have not only seen the second year in a row where more than one Best Picture nominee is in a language other than English, but also three nominees are Cannes 2024 winners.
The biggest surprise may be “I’m Still Here,” the Brazilian entry for Best International Feature, which also earned a Best Actress nomination for Fernanda Torres. A mix of her charming Golden Globes acceptance speech, and voters having more time to finally watch the Venice premiere,...

Since the Oscars nominations were announced on Thursday, 4,000 people have already made their winner predictions at Gold Derby. At this initial stage, The Brutalist is the one to beat, with five forecasted wins: picture, director, actor, cinematographer, and score. Brady Corbet‘s period piece about a Holocaust survivor (Adrien Brody) who hopes to achieve the American Dream received 10 total bids, as did Wicked, while the nominations leader was Emilia Pérez at 13.
Other films with impressive nom tallies on Thursday were A Complete Unknown (eight), Conclave (eight), Anora (six), Dune: Part Two (five), The Substance (five), and Nosferatu (four). See the complete list of nominations.
The four acting winners are currently expected to play out like this: Brody for actor, Demi Moore (The Substance) for actress, Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) for supporting actress, and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) for supporting actor. But the odds could change depending on what happens...

Angelina Jolie appears unfazed by her Oscars snub.
The 49-year-old actress had a smirk on her face as she pushed her cart full of groceries out to her car after some shopping on Thursday (January 23) in Los Feliz, Calif.
For her outing, Angelina wrapped up in a camel-colored coat over a black dress paired with black flats and dark sunglasses.
Hours earlier, the nominations for the 2025 Oscars were announced and Angelina was snubbed from the Best Actress category for her role in Netflix’s Maria, despite receiving rave reviews.
The ladies that ended up getting nominated are Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Demi Moore for The Substance, Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez, and Mikey Madison for Anora. You can see all of the 2025 Oscars nominations here.
Angelina Jolie wasn’t the only star that was surprisingly snubbed.

One year later, the Barbenheimer shadow looms over the Academy Award Best Picture race.
The 10 nominees unveiled Thursday have a collective global box-office revenue of $1.7 billion. That might seem like an impressive number, but it represents a 37 percent drop from the $2.7 billion of the previous year.
How is it that the numbers slipped year-to-year by a billion dollars? Much as there were two blockbuster hits in 2023 — Barbie and eventual Best Picture winner Oppenheimer — so too were there a pair of massive hits in 2024: Dune: Part Two and Wicked. Each has grossed more than $700 million worldwide, not too shabby. However, those totals pale in comparison to the more than $2.4 billion combined that were racked up at the multiplex by Barbie ($1.4 billion) and Oppenheimer ($975 million). The sheer staggering nature of their record-breaking dominance over the 2023 box office remains a singular, unprecedented achievement.

The 2025 Oscar nominations are finally here, and this year’s Best Picture nominees form an eclectic group of titles. That’s fitting for a year that offered as many diverse surprises and delights at the theater and on streaming as 2024 did. 2025’s Best Picture nominees are also noteworthy because none of them are shorter than 2 hours long. That means that, regardless of whether you still need to check off all of this year’s nominees or just a few, you’ll have to invest quite a bit of time if you want to watch all of them before the Oscars airs on Sunday, March 2.
To help you prepare for your Oscar viewing needs, here’s exactly how long every Best Picture nominee is this year, listed from shortest to longest.

This year’s Academy Awards season is set to become one of the most interesting and tightly contested seasons in the past few years. Everything from amazing biopics to genre roles has been delivered, and audiences have seen some amazing works from actresses within all categories.
It seems that besides showing the nominees’ performances and technicalities, the 2025 Oscar race is going to highlight their social and cultural influence and there will probably be some conversations that take place off the red carpet.

When it comes to this year’s Oscar nominations, the love was spread across the distributor scoreboard, from legacy Hollywood studios and their specialty divisions, to streamers and maverick indie distributors.
Netflix walked away with the most of any individual distributor on Tuesday with a total of 16 nods after Emilia Pérez landed a spot in 13 categories, the most of any film this year and setting a new record for a non-English-language film. And it’s just one shy of the all-time record for any film (All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land each landed 14).
Next up on the Academy’s scorecard of top-nominated individual distributors was powerhouse A24 with 14, including 10 for The Brutalist. The movie, which swept the Golden Globes, will use its front-runner status as it continues to expand in theaters, where it has earned a promising $5.9 million despite only playing in several hundred cinemas to date.

Warren Beatty. Alan Menken. Chloe Zhao. Alfonso Cuarón.
The list of people who’ve received four nominations for the same film is extremely short, basically those names and maybe one or two more.
On Thursday, Anora‘s Sean Baker added his name to it. The filmmaker pulled off that rare hat trick-plus-one — he landed noms for director, picture, original screenplay and editing.
“It’s surreal, a lot of those are my heroes,” Baker said when The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him Thursday about the feat. “Especially since I thought I was making a movie whose subject matter was out of fashion,” he said, chuckling slightly as he described his stripper-themed action dramedy.
Star Mikey Madison called Baker “one of a kind” when asked about him Thursday. Oscar-wise, that statement is not exactly true. But it’s not far off.

The 2025 Oscar nominations are here. The Academy of Motional Picture Arts and Sciences announced the contenders for this year’s Oscars on Jan. 23. As usual, there were some snubs (no love for Angelina Jolie in Maria or Nicole Kidman in Babygirl) and a few surprises (Sebastian Stan’s Best Actor nod for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice.) The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.
After Torres won the Globe for best actress, triumphing over A-listers Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), many Academy voters told Variety they were seeking out the film, with feedback being overwhelmingly positive. How do the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees stack up on Rotten Tomatoes? And does the film with the highest freshness rating have a better shot at winning the big prize?
While critics’ scores don’t determine the Best Picture lineup (there are thousands of highly rated movies each year), once the lineup is selected by the Motion Picture Academy, there are at least a few tea leaves worth reading. For instance, the only film to win Best Picture in the last 10 years with a freshness rating lower than 90 percent is Green Book, which has a Tomatometer score of just 77 percent.
Last year’s winner, Oppenheimer, holds a formidable 93 percent, but it didn’t rank first among it’s competitors. That distinction went to The Holdovers, which has a rating of 97 percent. So, a movie doesn’t have to have the highest score to win Best Picture, but it certainly helps its chances.

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”
Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).

Emilia Pérez established a new Oscars record, earning 13 nominations and entering the record books as the most nominated non-English language film. The Brutalist and Wicked followed with 10 Oscar nominations, and A Complete Unknown and Conclave each picked up eight. Anora was nominated in six categories, and The Substance and Dune: Part Two earned five nominations.
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members recognized The Substance‘s Coralie Fargeat with a directing nomination, making her only the 10th woman in Oscar history to earn a nomination in that category. And this year’s Best Picture nominees include two musicals – Emilia Pérez and Wicked – which hasn’t happened since 1968. The international trend begun by “Parasite” in 2020 continues. On Oscar nominations morning, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) was expected to lead the nominations, and did not disappoint, with a record 13 chances to win an Oscar on March 2.
Almost 10,000 Academy voters are invited to cast their ballots from February 11 – 18, and some twenty per cent of those voters live overseas. Both France’s Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez” and Brazil’s Portuguese “I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics) landed in Best Picture and scored at least one acting nod, along with the expected Best International Feature Film.
“Emilia Pérez,” about a Mexican drug cartel boss who transitions to being a woman, is now positioned to win multiple Oscars. Spanish actress Karla Sofia Gascón and New Jersey-born Zoe Saldaña scored acting nominations, and Saldaña is expected to win Supporting Actress. Save for the summer movie season, the biggest time of the year is upon observers of the church that is cinema. Awards season is in full swing, with the Golden Globes already behind us. More to the point, it's Oscar season, with the full list of nominees for this year's Academy Awards recently announced. There were surprises and snubs, and now the race for Best Picture is on, with critical darlings and blockbusters alike competing for the night's top prize. But which one of this year's nominees stands above the rest so far as box office is concerned?
Box office is not a great way of determining quality. Plenty of great movies have made next to no money (see the much-beloved "Sing Street"), while quite a few not-so-great movies have taken in boatloads of cash (see 2016's Oscar-winning hit "Suicide Squad"). That said, box office is important in terms of...

Emilia Pérez led the pack with 13 Oscar nominations Thursday, allowing Netflix to claim bragging rights as the year’s most-nominated distributor for a second year in a row.
France’s Spanish-language International Feature entry became the most-nominated non-English-language film of all time, picking up noms for Best Picture and a historical one for Best Actress Karla Sofía Gascón, along with a Supporting Actress nom for Zoe Saldaña as well as the categories of cinematography, directing, editing, international feature film, makeup and hairstyling, original score and two original songs, sound and adapted screenplay.
Netflix had 16 noms overall this year, two fewer than last year, bolstered by an animation nom for Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, The Only Girl in the Orchestra for documentary short and Diane Warren’s record 16th nomination for her original song “The Journey” from The Six Triple Eight.

What might as well be deemed the most awaited time of the year for all the entertainment buffs around the globe is finally here: the list of nominations for the Oscars 2025 aka the 97th Academy Awards has finally been released. And the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category, for one, seems to have some really interesting actors nominated this time around as well.

For one, the fan-beloved Kieran Culkin is up on the list for the first time in his star-studded acting career for giving one of the best performances of his lifetime in his 2024 masterpiece. But the competition is also rather tough, for battling alongside him is none other than the actor who almost played Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger: Jeremy Strong.

The nominations for Best Director at the Academy Awards have always been a big deal. This category helps highlight some of the best artistic minds in the industry, especially those who have repeatedly demonstrated mastery over their craft. Take a look at last year's nominations for Best Director: Christopher Nolan ("Oppenheimer"), Martin Scorsese ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Justine Triet ("Anatomy of a Fall"), Yorgos Lanthimos ("Poor Things"), and Jonathan Glazer ("The Zone of Interest"). While Nolan's eventual win for "Oppenheimer" was more than deserved, every other entry within this category underlines a strong directorial ethos, without which their respective cinematic visions would have been impossible.
This year's nominations for Best Director at the 97th Academy Awards also highlight stellar directors: Sean Baker for "Anora," Brady Corbet for "The Brutalist," James Mangold for "A Complete Unknown," Coralie Fargeat for "The Substance," and Jacques Audiard for "Emilia Pérez" (you can check...

The nominations are in for this year’s Oscars, but they’re reflective of an industry still stuck in its old ways. Some thoughts:
You either love or hate the awards season, but it’s hard to escape it. Awards of course don’t mean everything; they’re often indicative of a great marketing campaign and the production’s address book rather than actual quality.
Awards like the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the Oscars do however offer a reflection of the state of the entire industry. And today’s Oscar nominations didn’t paint a pleasant picture.
There are some excellent films nominated this year, such as Conclave, Sing Sing and Anora. We’re not here to criticise these films for getting nominated, but to highlight what they tell us about Hollywood itself. That being said, it seems I watched a different film called Emilia Pérez than the awards voters.

The Best Picture nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have been announced, and it’s (mostly) a solid list of movies contending for the top honor. From adaptations of beloved stage musicals and sci-fi novels to biographies and wholly original body horror, it’s an extremely varied list of films.
No matter your tastes, there’s something for everybody here. But if you’re like us and you intend to watch all of the nominees, FandomWire film critic Alan French and I have made it a little easier to prioritize here with a ranking of all 10 films.

Several underperforming films at the Oscars had one thing in common: A blunt willingness to deal with sex.
To wit: “Babygirl” star Nicole Kidman, playing a woman who comes closer to understanding her carnal side after an affair with her intern, campaigned harder than she ever had before; so did “Queer” lead actor Daniel Craig, as a lovelorn gay man who expresses through physicality what he cannot with words. Neither actor got a nomination. “Challengers,” a spring sensation led by Zendaya that seemed set to compete for its pulsating score and boundary-pushing screenplay, got in nowhere, while “Nosferatu,” a ravishing Gothic depiction of lust at the edge of death, didn’t get the best picture nod that some speculated it might.
None of these come as true shocks, exactly; Kidman’s and Craig’s campaigns seemed to lose steam as precursor nominations eluded their grasps, while “Challengers” may just have...

Netflix scored a leading 16 Oscar nominations on Thursday, most of which were awarded to “Emilia Pérez,” a genre-spanning musical drama about a drug kingpin who undergoes gender affirming surgery.
“Emilia Pérez” landed 13 nods in total, including best picture, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, and best director for Jacques Audiard. The streamer also received nominations for “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” in the best animated feature category and for Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” for cinematography.
A24 followed close behind on the scoreboard with 14 nominations for a range of films including director Brady Corbet’s historical epic “The Brutalist” and the Colman Domingo-led “Sing Sing.” “The Brutalist” tied with “Wicked” for the second-most decorated film with 10 nods each. The independent film community settling into Park City where the next crop of indie films will launch at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival has something to celebrate: a 2024 where audiences turned out and started to turn the market around.
“In the independent theatrical world post-Covid, we were asking ‘Are we going to exist?’ And the answer is, ‘Yes. We can’,” says producer Erik Feig, founder and CEO of Picturestart. “These movies are working on a financial level. They are working on a cultural level, and that’s what theatrical movies are all about.”
“I’m feeling that there’s definitely more opportunity bubbling around in terms of the audiences that are showing up,” agrees Lia Buman, co-founder of Tango Entertainment. “And then, when a film is hitting its target with its audience, that’s how word of mouth builds and then that’s how they grow and grow. It’s almost old school.

We are fully in the throes of awards season with the Golden Globes behind us and, more importantly, the Academy Awards just around the corner. The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced recently and we now know which movies will be competing for the coveted Best Picture prize. That list includes several critical darlings such as "The Brutalist" and "Anora," and it also features a couple of surprises -- perhaps most notably Mubi's body horror flick "The Substance." But one of the nominees is not like the others, because it's by no means a critical favorite.
Netflix's "Emilia Pérez" has the worst overall critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes of the ten movies nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars this year. As of this writing, it holds a so-so 76% approval rating from critics on the site, with 237 reviews counted. More amazingly, it holds an abysmal 34% audience approval, suggesting that quite...

Emilia Pérez leads the 2025 Oscar nominations, which were revealed Thursday morning.
The film scored 13 noms, setting a record for a non-English-language film. That surpasses the previous record holders, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each earned 10.
Following Emilia Pérez were The Brutalist and Wicked, which tied with 10 noms apiece. A Complete Unknown and Conclave followed with eight mentions each.
All five of those films will compete for best picture with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys and The Substance. Coralie Fargeat, who directed the latter film, was the only female to be nominated in the best directing category, and also scored a writing nom, while star Demi Moore landed the first Oscar nom of her career, as did Isabella Rossellini for Conclave.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish-born star of Emilia Pérez, was nominated for best actress, making her the first openly transgender performer to be so honored.

And it has come down to this.
After months of hype, campaigning, predictions, and pivots, the 2025 Oscar nominations arrived Thursday to provide clarity in a muddled awards season.
Leading the way: Emilia Pérez (13 nominations), The Brutalist (10), Wicked (10), A Complete Unknown (eight), and Conclave (eight). Those films will compete with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance.
With its 13 nominations — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) — Emilia Pérez set a record for an international film, eclipsing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each had 10. The Spanish-language, Mexico-set French-imported musical’s tally matched last year’s leader, Oppenheimer, which went on to win Best Picture.

But without an Oppenheimer-esque juggernaut dominating the precursor awards, it’s expected to be a tight race with formidable competition.

Updated with more details, scorecards: Nominations for the 97th Oscars were revealed Thursday morning and the major takeaway is this heralds the most wide-open awards race we have witnessed in years.
A far cry from last year when Oppenheimer expectedly dominated the proceedings, this time the race for Best Picture features a class of wildly different, audaciously ambitious films. Emilia Pérez, the musical about a Mexican cartel leader who fakes his death and undergoes a gender transition but cannot avoid the people in her former life, leads all nominees with 13 including Best Picture, the most by a non-English-language film in Oscar history.
Also up for the top prize are Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, The Substance and Wicked.

Congratulations are in order for Yura Borisov and the Anora cast, who have landed multiple Oscar nominations Thursday.
But perhaps no one will be more delighted than the previously relatively unknown star, Borisov, who has become the first Russian actor to earn an Oscar nomination in a performance category since 1977.
The full list of nominations was presented by actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater with Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown) and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist) rounding out the competition in the supporting actor category.

Who’s afraid of a little female body horror? For once, not the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which on Thursday morning, finally opened one of the last remaining gilded doors of their annual Oscar nominations, pouring love all over filmmaker Coralie Fargeat and her “The Substance.”
The filmmaker, with just her second film, earned the sole spot for a female filmmaker in the Best Director race, in addition to helming the lone female-directed film in the Best Picture race. Meanwhile, other female filmmakers and their work were shut out not just from the picture and director race, but the entire Oscar nom kit and kaboodle, including Payal Kapadia and her “All We Imagine as Light” and Halina Reijn and her “Babygirl.”
Earlier this month, Fargeat told IndieWire at the Golden Globes that she believes horror films are fully deserving of a level playing field at the Oscars.

This year, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated one female director: Coralie Fargeat for The Substance.
The other nominees in the category are Sean Baker (Anora), James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez) and Brady Corbet (The Brutalist).
Payal Kapadia, who directed All We Imagine as Light, was omitted from the lineup on Thursday. Fargeat also received a best original screenplay nomination.
The Academy has long been criticized for its lack of female director nominees. Previously, the Academy had only nominated a woman nine times (eight women have been nominated. Jane Campion received a nod twice) in the best director category (Fargeat is the ninth female nominee), and only three have won. Lina Wertmüller, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Emerald Fennell, Chloé Zhao, Justine Triet and Campion are the only women nominated in the century-long history of the Academy Awards. Campion, Zhao and Bigelow won.

The full list of noms for the 97th Academy Awards have been revealed, and “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” indeed performed well, given how they cleaned up at the Golden Globes (with four wins for the Jacques Audiard film and three for Brady Corbet’s). And so did that absolute blockbuster juggernaut “Wicked.”

We’ve put on our finest clothing and poured a glass of champagne in honour of the Oscar nominations that have just emanated from the Academy’s chimney.
Among the big names in the running for an award this year are Wicked star Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress, Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category for his engaging turn in A Real Pain, and Nosferatu for Best Make-Up & Hair. (We like to think that it was Bill Skarsgård’s moustache that swung the latter nomination.)
Fun fact: three of the five nominations in the Best Visual Effects category have primates in. Something for the VFX studios out there should think about if they want a nomination next year.

Wicked‘s Cynthia Erivo and Emilia Pérez‘s Karla Sofía Gascón earned their widely predicted Best Actress Oscar nominations on Thursday. Their bids represent a rare double in Oscar history: This is the second time — and first in 60 years — that multiple musical performances are nominated in Best Actress.
Counting just traditional musicals with non-diegetic music, the last time this happened was, naturally, during the heyday of musicals in the 1960s. Julie Andrews and Debbie Reynolds were nominated for their respective 1964 films, Mary Poppins and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with the former winning. There could’ve been a third musical nominee that year had My Fair Lady‘s Audrey Hepburn made the cut.
Andrews’ victory has been seen as a bit of sweet revenge after producer Jack Warner cast Hepburn instead of Andrews, who originated the role of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway in the film adaptation of My Fair Lady. Not...

“Emilia Pérez,” a musical about a drug kingpin who undergoes gender affirming surgery, topped the 2025 Oscar nominations with 13 nods. It was followed closely behind by “The Brutalist,” a historical epic the examines the immigrant experience, and “Wicked,” the hit screen version of a long-running Broadway sensation, which both nabbed 10 nominations. “Conclave,” a thriller about the election of a new pope, and “A Complete Unknown,” a look at Bob Dylan’s early, freewheelin’ years, each had 8 nominations.
The Oscar nominations were unveiled Thursday after voting had been extended twice because of the wildfires that have devastated Los Angeles, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people and catastrophic property damage. One of the most open-wide races in years is coming into focus. “Emilia Pérez” led all nominees for the 97th Academy Awards with 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Its haul sets a new record for a film not in English. “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” tied for second place with 10 each, both also receiving nods for picture. Brady Corbet was also nominated for directing and Adrien Brody scored a lead actor nom, his first since winning for “The Piano” in 2003.
More major milestones: “Conclave” supporting actress Isabella Rossellini earned her first nomination, 46 years after her mother Ingrid Bergman’s final nom. Demi Moore also earned her first nomination, for her lead performance in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror film “The Substance.” Fargeat became the ninth woman to ever be nominated for directing, following her fellow Frenchwoman Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) last year.
