From Star Wars Celebration in Japan, Lucasfilm officially announced Shawn Levy's new "Star Wars" movie, in development since 2022, by giving it an official title and a release date.
"Star Wars: Starfighter" is the name of the new movie, though it doesn't have anything to do with the video game of the same name, and it's been slated for release on May 28, 2027, just in time for the 50th anniversary of "Star Wars: A New Hope." Furthermore, Ryan Gosling has been confirmed as the lead, though there's no word on who will be joining him after Oscar-winning "Anora" star Mikey Madison was recently revealed to have passed on a supporting role in the film.

As everyone wonders how Mikey Madison will follow up her Oscar-winning performance in Anora, it seems she won't be heading to a galaxy far, far away as she has now reportedly passed on the upcoming Star Warsentry starring Ryan Gosling. After appearing in critically acclaimed titles like Better Things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and 2022's Scream, Mikey Madison's role in Anora earned her critical acclaim and an Academy Award for Best Actress, beating out stars like Demi Moore in The Substance and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked. At just 26 years old, Madison is likely at the top of every studio's short list for their major films, and she now has the clout to decide what she does and doesn't want to do.
Variety reports that Madison was offered a lead role in the upcoming Star Wars film directed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy and starring Academy Award-nominee Ryan Gosling.

After winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora, Mikey Madison has her pick of projects, and for a brief moment, one of those was Star Wars. According to The InSneider, Madison was rumoured to be in early talks to join the cast of Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie, but Variety has now reported that the actress has passed on the role.
In addition to Star Wars, Sneider said that Madison was also considering an offer to star in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie. Now that she’s passed on Star Wars, perhaps Resident Evil could be her next project.
Sneider added that Levy’s Star Wars movie is “currently casting the lead role, which is a 15-year-old boy, as well as the boy’s mother, plus two villains.” There’s another significant female character in the mix, which is the role Madison was being eyed for.

Mikey Madison has passed on joining Ryan Gosling in an untitled “Star Wars” movie, according to an insider with knowledge of the project. Madison was previously being eyed to star and an offer was made.
Madison recently won the Best Actress Oscar for her role in “Anora.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” filmmaker Shawn Levy is set to direct. “The Adam Project” writer Jonathan Tropper wrote the script.
Levy has been attached to the project since 2022 and additional details about the film are being kept under wraps. Tropper and Levy have previously collaborated on the 2014 family drama “This Is Where I Leave You,” as well as on the script for the Mark Raso-directed Netflix film “Kodachrome,” which Levy produced.
Previously, “Anora” writer-director Sean Baker’s interest in Madison was piqued by a role in the fifth installment of “Scream,” a 2022 film in which she (spoiler!) ends up killing David Arquette’s sheriff character.

Mikey Madison won’t journey into a Galaxy Far Far Away for her first project after picking up the best actress Oscar.
Sources tell Variety that Madison was offered a role in the new and untitled “Star Wars” movie directed by “Deadpool & Wolverine” filmmaker Shawn Levy, but conversations have since ended with the “Anora” star passing on the part.
As previously reported, screenwriter Jonathan Tropper has been writing the screenplay for the film, which will star Ryan Gosling. Levy — who will join the rarefied club of directors who’ve worked with both Canadian movie stars named Ryan — has been developing the project since late 2022 and is also producing for his 21 Laps company, along with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
The movie is said to be a standalone project that isn’t connected with the Skywalker Saga, which concluded with 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” All other plot details...

Demi Moore has been around for multiple decades, with a series of successful hits at the box office. However, 2024 gave her the critical acclaim she deserves with the horror hit The Substance, which led to her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

The Current Debate connects the dots around a topic of the critical conversation.Anora.Remember Cord Jefferson’s plea at last year’s Oscars? Picking up his Best Adapted Screenplay award for American Fiction (2023), the director chided the industry for being “risk-averse,” and suggested that, “instead of making one $200 million movie,” producers should spread those resources to make room for more diverse and bolder voices. “Try making twenty $10 million movies,” he said, “or fifty $4 million movies.” Jefferson was of course alluding to Oppenheimer (2023), Christopher Nolan’s thunderous portrait of “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer, a $100-million Best Picture winner that racked up seven statuettes and nearly a billion dollars at the box office. A year later, a cursory glance at the list of 2025 Oscar winners might make you think the industry did, in fact, heed the call. It’s not that there were no big-budget films among...

Demi Moore is reflecting on the 2025 Oscars.
In an interview with Time magazine, published on Wednesday, Moore opened up about losing the best actress Oscar to Mikey Madison earlier this year, and how she “knew” it wasn’t hers during the commercial break before the category was called.
“I leaned over and whispered to my manager, ‘I think it’s going to Mikey,'” Moore recalled. “I don’t know why I knew, but I did.”
And when Emma Stone read that Madison won best actress, Moore said she was “centered and calm.” She continued, “I didn’t feel gutted. I didn’t feel any of those kinds of things. I just trusted, and am in trust of, whatever is going to unfold.”
Madison was nominated for playing a sex worker in Anora (which dominated the Oscars with five wins), and she won BAFTA and Spirit awards for her role.

Mike Flanagan’s upcoming take on the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck has a new trailer – and an August UK release date.
Off the back of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be something really rather good. Off the back of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be something really rather good. The film won TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, leading to buzz that the film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, given that 12 of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.

Today, fans are finally able to give Chuck Krantz the beefy thank you that he’s long deserved, as the official trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck has finally been released. Following a first look at CinemaCon in Las Vegas just two weeks ago, the rest of the world can now feast their eyes on the latest offering to come from famed filmmaker Flanagan and legendary genre author Stephen King. The best part about The Life of Chuck is that it diverges from the typical fare that audiences have seen in the past from both Flannigan and King, largely breaking out of the horror mold and taking audiences on an existential journey to rediscover the wonders of life alongside a cast led by Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange) and Karen Gillan (Oculus).
As his 40th birthday nears, Hiddleston’s Chuck Krantz enters the final days...

“The Life of Chuck” is almost ready to be unveiled.
The movie, based on a Stephen King short story of the same name, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where it won the coveted People’s Choice Award, which has historically foretold the Best Picture Oscar winner. But, after Neon picked up the movie, they slotted it for a summer 2025 release.
Now, “The Life of Chuck’s” release date is nearing and Neon has a new, heart-tugging trailer. Watch it below.
Wondering what “The Life of Chuck” is about? Here’s the official synopsis: “From the hearts and minds of Stephen King and Mike Flanagan comes ‘The Life of Chuck,’ the extraordinary story of an ordinary man. This unforgettable, genre-bending tale celebrates the life of Charles ‘Chuck’ Krantz as he experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.

The 2025 Academy Awards will live on as an exciting night for first-time nominees. The ceremony saw a handful of veteran actors getting nominated for the first time in their careers, including Demi Moore ("The Substance"), Guy Pearce ("The Brutalist"), and Isabella Rossellini ("Conclave"), and one actor got a big, shocking boost when first-time nominee Mikey Madison won Best Actress for "Anora." But for every new Oscar nominee that comes along each year, there's still a surprising number of talented performers who have yet to be honored by the Academy with even a single nomination.
Despite being recognized by the Golden Globes, BAFTAs (basically the British Oscars), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and other distinguished institutions, certain artists just can't seem to get on the Academy's radar. A few famous names received honorary Oscars, despite never getting nominated, while the Academy has completely iced out others with some pretty controversial Oscar snubs.

Left-Handed Girl, directed by Shih-Ching Tsou and co-written by filmmaker Sean Baker, has been selected to compete in the 2025 Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival. The Taipei-set family drama is one of seven features included in this year’s lineup for the parallel section, which focuses on first and second works from emerging directors.
Tsou, who previously collaborated with Baker on Take Out, Tangerine, Starlet, The Florida Project, and Red Rocket, directs the film solo. Baker also co-edited the project while overseeing the awards run for his film Anora, which won Best Picture, Best Director, and three other Oscars earlier this year.
Left-Handed Girl follows a single mother and her two daughters as they navigate the complexities of life in the Taiwanese capital. Janel Tsai, an actress and model based in Taiwan, leads the cast. The film blends social realism with a focus on working-class life, continuing themes explored...

The first trailer for Eddington offers a chaotic first look at Ari Aster's upcoming A24 Western feature ahead of its premiere next month. The movie centers on the conflict between small-town sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix) and local mayor Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) in the fictional town of Eddington, New Mexico, but the first footage reveals that pressures from external factors will only intensify their personal and political standoff, including real-world issues such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
The tagline that accompanied the trailer on social media read "Hindsight is 2020," referencing the tumultuous year that saw the onset of the global outbreak of the coronavirus disease and the widespread demonstrations protesting racial injustice and police brutality. "Of course, they keep looking at that lab in China. If you look at that lab in Wuhan," a voice narrates over the clips at the beginning of the trailer.

The Cannes Critics’ Week 2025 selection boasts Best Picture winner Sean Baker’s latest project.
Baker collaborates once more with his “Take Out” co-director and co-writer Shih-Ching Tsou, who makes her directorial debut with “Left-Handed Girl.” Tsou also produced Baker’s “Tangerine” (which she starred in) and “The Florida Project,” and executive-produced “Starlet.” Now, “Left-Handed Girl” incorporates Baker’s social-realist approach with the Taipei-set tragicomedy “Left-Handed Girl,” which follows a single mother and her two daughters building a new life in the Taiwanese capital. Baker cowrites, edits, and produces the film.
“The film was edited by Sean. It’s true that there’s a connection, I’m not going to hide it, and I don’t think Shih-Ching Tsou will either,” Cannes Critics’ Week artistic director Ava Cahen told Deadline. “It’s a bit reminiscent of ‘Tangerine’ and ‘The Florida Project,’ for the way it captures reality, with a form of wonder,...

The Cannes Critics’ Week, the festival sidebar focusing on directors’ first and second features, unveiled its 2025 lineup Monday.
Competition highlights include Left-Handed Girl, the solo directorial debut of Taiwanese filmmaker Shih-Ching Tsou, known for her long-standing collaboration with Anora director Sean Baker (Tsou co-directed 2004’s Take Out and was a producer on Baker’s Tangerine, The Florida Project and Red Rocket). Baker co-wrote and edited the Taipei-set urban melodrama, which centers on a single mother and her two daughters navigating life on the margins of the Taiwanese capital.
Also debuting in Critics’ Week is Thai director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke with A Useful Ghost, a surrealist take on motherhood in which a woman reincarnates as a vacuum cleaner. Thai actress Mai Davika Hoorne leads the cast.

Listen up students, Professor Coogler is present for class and ready to lay down some knowledge. In promotion of his upcoming horror film, “Sinners,” writer/director Ryan Coogler has released a video with Kodak that lays out not only all the formats audiences can view it in in theaters, but also what each experience offers. Fans of traditional film stock will also rejoice, as Coogler goes into detail about what makes its use so special. Watch the video below.
“I’m really excited to announce that ‘Sinners’ was captured on film,” said Coogler. “That’s a format that I fell in love with when I was in film school, so I brought a few film strips along here.”
Coogler proceeded to showcase the four sizes of film stock, starting with Super 8mm, which he described as more for “home videos,” though it still provides a “really beautiful aesthetic.” From there,...

The lineup for the 78th Cannes Film Festival has officially been announced. As of today, 19 films will be competing for the prestigious top prize, the Palme d’Or, which last year was won by Sean Baker's Anora. This year’s festival runs between May 13 and May 24, and the jury is headed by actress Juliette Binoche. Binoche won the Best Actress award at Cannes in 2010 for Certified Copy and an Oscar in 1996 for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The English Patient.
Two of this year’s entries come from directors who have won the Palme in the past. Another three are from helmers who have won prizes in official competition other than the Palme. Seven selections are from directors who are having their first films screened in competition.

For the second time in six years — and only the fourth in its 78-year history — the movie that cinched the Palme d’Or at Cannes went on to win best picture at the Oscars.
When it happened to “Parasite,” it was easy to look on that as a fluke. Not since “No Country for Old Men” (another film launched at Cannes) had a genre film earned the Academy’s top prize. And of course, no South Korean movie had ever won (or even so much as been nominated) for best picture before.
But the triumph of “Anora” this year suggests a possible pattern … or perhaps, the inevitable result of a concerted effort by the Academy to diversify and globalize its membership (a move that inevitably benefits international and non-English-language cinema at the Oscars). Either way, the celebrated film festival — which takes place every May along France’s Côte d’Azur...

It could have been an email, but the Cannes Film Festival revealed its 2025 lineup on Thursday with an hour-long press conference that unofficially kicked off the 2026 Oscar race. Multiple presumed future awards contenders will premiere at Cannes this year, including new films from Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, Julia Ducournau, Oliver Hermanus, Scarlett Johansson, Spike Lee (probably; more on that below), Richard Linklater, Kelly Reichardt, and Joachim Trier. Ahead are the three burning questions about this year’s lineup that could impact next year’s Oscars.
Will Neon win its sixth straight Palme d’Or?
Since 2019, Neon has won the Palme d’Or five consecutive times: Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, and Anora. (Cannes was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.) The Cannes Film Festival has released the official selection for its 78th edition, featuring a mix of returning auteurs and first-time filmmakers. Scheduled to run from May 13 to 24, this year’s lineup includes world premieres from directors such as Wes Anderson, Julia Ducournau, Ari Aster, and Richard Linklater.
Announced by festival delegate general Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch during a press conference in Paris, the lineup spans the main competition, Un Certain Regard, and various sidebars. French actor and Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche will serve as jury president. The rest of the jury remains unannounced.
Among the films selected for competition is Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, debuting shortly before its theatrical release. The guessing game around which films could make the lineup for the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 13—24, came to an end this morning at a press conference in Paris by Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch. If you tapped the latest works by Ari Aster (Eddington), Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind), Richard Linklater (Nouvelle Vague), Wes anderson (The Phoenician Scheme), and the Dardenne brothers (Young Mothers) to make the cut, then you were correct.

It’s been nearly a year since “Anora” began its rise to Oscar history by winning the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. But as the 2025 edition of France’s cinematic gathering draws near, the third film ever to pull off the Palme/Best Picture double is just now creeping into profitability.
With a 70-day theatrical exclusive window, “Anora” grossed just $20.4 million from its domestic theatrical run, putting the $6 million FilmNation production that was acquired by Neon six months ahead of its Cannes premiere in a position where it has relied on post-theatrical revenue, particularly a boost in premium video on-demand sales following its Oscar triumph, to get in the black.
While its status alongside Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” in the Palme+Oscar club makes “Anora” a high profile example, it is indicative of a larger trend throughout Hollywood, but particularly in the specialty area, where PVOD has...

New films from Wes Anderson, Richard Linklater and the Dardenne brothers will premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Cannes organizers announced at a press conference in Paris on Thursday.
Anderson will be back in Cannes with “The Phoenician Scheme,” which premiered a baffling trailer at CinemaCon last week. Linklater is heading to France with a bold movie, “Nouvelle Vague,” which tackles the sacred ground of Jean-Luc Godard and the filming of “Breathless” in the 1960s. The Dardenne brothers have “Young Mothers,” which gives them a chance to become the first filmmakers to win the Palme d’Or three times.
Actors in the festival making their directorial debuts include Scarlett Johansson, who is in Un Certain Regard with “Eleanor the Great,” starring Joan Squibb; and Harris Dickinson, the star of the Palme d’Or winner “The Triangle of Sadness,” with “Urchin.”

Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch announced this year’s lineup at a press conference in Paris on Thursday morning.
The 2025 competition lineup is packed with auteur heavyweights, including Kelly Reichardt, who returns to Cannes competition with The Mastermind, an art-heist drama starring Josh O’Connor and John Magaro, set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War; Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, who returns to the Croisette after his 2021 triumph (with The Worst Person of the World) with Sentimental Value, also featuring Renate Reinsve; and dissident Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who will be back in Cannes competition with his latest drama, A Simple Accident.

Fresh off the announcement that a Magic: The Gathering film and television universe was in the works, Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary may have potentially found their director to jumpstart the franchise.

It’s table stakes at this point to recognize that a significant portion of the eventual Best Picture field will launch at the Cannes Film Festival. Six of the 20 Best Picture nominees premiered on the French Riviera in the last two years. Last year’s Palme d’Or winner Anora became only the third Cannes champion to take the top award — but the second in five years after Parasite pulled off the gambit in 2020. (The only previous Palme d’Or champion to win Best Picture was 1955’s Marty.) That has made Cannes a significant step in awards season, despite its spring calendar placement — and with the Academy increasing its international membership annually, the importance of Cannes will only continue to grow.
So, which of this year’s potential premieres will carry through to next year’s Oscars ceremony? Ahead are the nine movies we hope make the cut when the...

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Janet Yang said the media and entertainment community needs to preserve “human authorship” as AI use evolves in Hollywood, Monday during a session at the Nab Show. “We need the human behind the AI,” she said. “I feel cautiously optimistic that we will find a path for what will be a big part of our lives.”
In attendance at the National Association of Broadcasters Show in Las Vegas for the first time, Yang participated in a panel during which she provided an overview of the Academy and thoughts on AI to the engineering-heavy audience.
Noting that the Academy has 19 branches, representing those in front of and behind the camera, as well as one of the newest, aimed at those who work in production technology, she said, “as one can imagine there are a lot of different points of view [on AI]. One thing we...

Late last year, IndieWire hosted college students from Uc Berkeley at our Los Angeles offices for a presentation on the journalistic and educational content that their generation of film and TV professionals want to see. Afterwards, I chatted with a group of these informed and confident industry hopefuls and wanted to know what they found worth watching. “The Bear”? Maybe Sean Baker‘s soon-to-be Oscar-sweeper “Anora”? To my surprise, the only thing they’d all seen recently was the Max original film “Sweethearts.”
Surprising? At first, but then it was self evident: A film about teens returning home from college for the first time and recognizing the shifts that have taken place — how could it not appeal to exactly to this group of students?
That lesson repeated itself as social media blew up this weekend over the surprise $157 million domestic box-office opening for “A Minecraft Movie.” The trailers, marketing materials,...

Walter Salles has described the “explosion of joy” in Brazil at his Oscar win for I’m Still Here as “the most beautiful gift”.
Speaking after his masterclass at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra lab, Salles said the film “allowed younger generations to have a better understanding of what had happened in their own country. It was the contact with a hidden part of history that surfaced, and that is what made the film theirs.”
