- Anora "Ani" Mikheeva is a young stripper living in Brighton Beach, a Russian-speaking enclave in Brooklyn.
As the only Russian-speaking dancer at an upscale Manhattan strip club, Ani is introduced by her boss to Ivan "Vanya" Zakharov, the spoiled and reckless son of wealthy Russian oligarch Nikolai Zakharov. Ostensibly in the U.S. to study, Vanya spends most of his time partying and playing video games in his family's Brooklyn mansion. His parents pay his godfather, Toros, and his henchmen, Garnick and Igor, to keep Vanya out of trouble and clean up after his escapades.
Vanya hires Ani for several sexual encounters and becomes infatuated with her. He offers her $15,000 to stay with him for a week and pose as his girlfriend. This leads to a whirlwind romance that culminates in a trip to Las Vegas, where Vanya impulsively proposes. Despite initial hesitation, Ani agrees, convinced by Vanya's declarations of love. They elope in a small Vegas chapel.
However, shortly after the wedding, Vanya casually reveals he hopes the marriage will help him secure a green card, allowing him to avoid returning to Russia and working for his distant father. Disappointed but determined, Ani quits her job and commits herself to being Vanya's wife. Vanya, however, remains immature and self-centered. News of their union spreads through Russian social media, infuriating Vanya's controlling mother, Galina. She orders Toros to track them down and secure an annulment while the family flies to the U.S.
Toros dispatches Garnick and Igor to confront the couple at the mansion. They inform Vanya he's being sent back to Russia and insult Ani by repeatedly calling her a prostitute. Overwhelmed, Vanya flees, leaving Ani to face the situation alone. A physical altercation ensues, with Ani fighting off Garnick and Igor, damaging much of the mansion in the process. Eventually subdued, she is confronted by Toros, who offers her $10,000 to accept the annulment, explaining Vanya has no personal assets to share in a divorce. Though Ani insists on her love for Vanya, she reluctantly agrees to help find him, hoping to salvage their relationship. Toros confiscates her wedding ring as a precaution.
The group spends the night searching Brooklyn for Vanya, who is on a drunken spree, hopping from nightclub to nightclub. Ani finds him receiving a lap dance from a rival stripper at her former club, leading to a heated confrontation. She tries to explain the gravity of the situation, but Vanya, too intoxicated, brushes her off. Learning that their Nevada marriage cannot be annulled without further complications, Galina, now in New York with Nikolai, orders the group to head to Las Vegas.
In Las Vegas, Ani tries to prove herself to Vanya's parents by addressing them in Russian. While Nikolai is mildly amused, Galina remains hostile and dismissive. Vanya sides with his family, coldly telling Ani their marriage is untenable. Ani, aware she never signed a prenuptial agreement, threatens a lengthy divorce battle, but Galina vows to destroy her life if she proceeds. Realizing Vanya's immaturity and the power of his family, Ani agrees to the annulment.
After the paperwork is signed, Igor suggests Vanya apologize to Ani, but Galina forbids it. Ani delivers a scathing parting insult to both Vanya and Galina, which unexpectedly amuses Nikolai.
Igor drives Ani back to New York to pack her belongings. During their final evening at the Zakharov mansion, the two share a rare moment of connection. Igor admits it was his birthday the previous day, and Ani shows a flicker of vulnerability. The next morning, Igor gives Ani the money Toros promised her and discreetly returns her wedding ring as a kind gesture. Touched, Ani briefly initiates intimacy with Igor but ultimately breaks down, sobbing in his arms.
