Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis, receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself.
The Weinstein Company and Fox Searchlight had a fierce bidding war over the rights to the film. The Weinstein Company ended up acquiring U.S. and Canadian distribution rights from StudioCanal in October 2013.

As Macbeth walks towards the witches for the first time in a wide shot, the sheer socks protecting his supposedly bare feet are clearly visible.
