Exclusive: Soda brand continues to exist as the company expands to include Canadian distribution, starting with The Riot Club.
Canadian production company Thunderbird has acquired UK indie distributor Soda Pictures in a deal that will see Soda grow its UK operations and slate as well as launching as a distributor in Canada.
The companies launch the new venture with a Canadian deal for Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club, which premieres tomorrow night in Toronto. The Riot Club deal was negotiated between HanWay’s Thorsten Schumacher and Soda’s Eve Gabereau.
Soda will continue to operate under its own brand, as part of the Thunderbird group of companies. Soda principals Eve Gabereau and Edward Fletcher, who founded the company in 2002, will continue to lead the outfit.
The alliance will see Soda concentrating on high-end British films for its Canadian slate. The UK slate will grow in “scale and scope” thanks to the new investment.

Two familiar television faces welcomed the opportunity that one project gave them to change things up.
The fact-inspired Lifetime drama "Baby Sellers," premiering Saturday, Aug. 17, offers Kirstie Alley and Jennifer Finnigan ("Monday Mornings") chances for something different. Emmy-winning "Cheers" and "Dancing With the Stars" alum Alley notably underplays the part of a seemingly respectable adoption agency chief with a worldwide network, her illegal supply chain for the youngsters she needs.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent portrayed by Finnigan is on to the scheme. She infiltrates the operation, and one notable scene gives the actresses a face to face confrontation reminiscent of the midstory showdown between Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in 1995's "Heat."
"I get to be the bad guy, right?" Alley asks Zap2it with a knowing laugh. "I think when you're the bad guy, you think you're the good guy, or you wouldn't do what you do.

Because we just heard those bearded dudes from "Duck Dynasty" rake in $200,000 per episode, it might be time to ease off the reality TV and watch a movie instead. What to see? Here’s the scoop:
On the Big Screen: "Lee Daniels' The Butler"
So you shine Nixon’s shoes, your wife’s a tad boozy and your son dabbles in Black Pantherism (kids!). That’s just a typical day in the life of Cecil Gaines. In an epic Forest Gump-like style, "Lee Daniels' The Butler" follows Cecil’s life from his childhood in the '20s, through the civil rights movement in the '60s, and right up to Obama’s presidency. Forest Whitaker takes the lead and Oprah (yes, Oprahhh!) plays his wife. Highlights include John Cusack doing his best Tricky Dick impersonation, Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan and Oprah in a tracksuit.

Lifetime is making a movie about Donatella Versace and The Hollywood Reporter says that Gina Gershon will play Donatella with Enrico Colantoni as Gianni and Raquel Welch as their Aunt Lucia. I’m sure Gershon will be great but she’ll have to make us forget:
If only Ugly Betty were successful enough for a Fabia spin-off.
The next season of The Real World wil return to San Francisco and risk comparisons to the show at its peak. However, ratings are sinking — the current season is attracting half as many viewers as 2011′s return to Las Vegas did. Thus, the iconic series may be heading towards its series finale but not before producers try to adjust the format. The Real World has already tried being more substantial and wallowing in the worst of reality TV. What is left to try?
What will third greatest event in the history of television be?...

Kirstie Alley is happy to show it's not all laughs where she's concerned.
Best-known for such high-spirited ventures as "Cheers" -- for which she won an Emmy -- and her two stints on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," the actress has more humor in her future with her upcoming TV Land sitcom "Kirstie."
First, though, she makes a dramatic stop: Saturday's (Aug. 18) new Lifetime movie "Baby Sellers" casts her as an adoption-agency chief using questionable means to acquire youngsters for childless couples.
"The last couple of years have just been a ball," the ever-lively Alley tells Zap2it. "When 'Dancing With the Stars' first came up for me, every person on my team said, 'Don't do it.' Well, that always makes me rise to the challenge. I realized, 'This could be a huge mistake, or it could be glorious.' And it was a challenge I couldn't resist.

Jennifer Finnigan anticipates still starting many work weeks on Monday mornings, even if she no longer does it on the show by that name.
The actress has moved on to other projects, including Saturday's (Aug. 17) new Lifetime movie "Baby Sellers," which casts her as an investigator probing a questionable adoption-agency operator (Kirstie Alley). Still, Finnigan laments the end of TNT's "Monday Mornings," the recent medical drama in which she starred with such notables as Alfred Molina and Ving Rhames.
"The ratings were a disappointment," she admits to Zap2it, "but they were building each week, and our audience was extremely loyal. I just think it had so much potential. Cable networks have a history of giving shows with a pedigree a shot, so it surprised me a bit."
Indeed, "Monday Mornings" had pedigree: Its executive producers were Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the CNN senior medical correspondent on whose novel the show was based,...

Just as it did back in 2005 with the miniseries Human Trafficking, Lifetime is again shining the light on one of the more troubling human-rights issues of our time. Baby Sellers — also produced by Robert Halmi Sr. — follows the hunt to take down an international child-trafficking ring in which newborns are bought or stolen from disadvantaged parents and given to adoptive parents who often have no idea what had to happen for them to get those children. Kirstie Alley plays the head of the U.S.-based adoption agency that seems very innocent and law-abiding, but is in fact brutally ruthless [...]

Kirstie Alley is up to no good — well, at least her new character is. In Lifetime’s new original movie Baby Sellers, Alley stars as Carla Huxley, the owner of a U.S. adoption agency. She helps bring families together, but as you can imagine by the title, something isn’t quite right: Huxley actually fronts an infant-trafficking ring. The flick airs Saturday, August 17, at 8 p.m. on Lifetime. If you can’t wait until then, just check out our exclusive clip below:...
