“America’s Got Talent” fans are in a state of mourning as one of their favorite non-human contestants, Mr. Piffles, is dead at age 16. The beloved pooch served as the assistant to Piff the Magic Dragon for more than a decade. Mr. Piffles went to doggy heaven on Nov. 13, 2024.

Mr. Piffles’ trusty human announced the sad news on social media. “For over 15 years I’ve had the privilege and the pleasure of being upstaged and outshone night after night by that little ball of fluffy indifference,” said Piff the Magic Dragon, whose real name is John van der Put. “He came into my life when I had nothing, and set me on the path to a career I could only dream of. In the beginning, I may have rescued him, but in the end, he rescued me. I love you so much Mr Piffles. #RIPiffles.”

After 19 seasons of working on “America’s Got Talent,” Jason Raff is exiting as showrunner due to budget cuts. Moving forward, the unscripted competition series will be helmed by Sam Donnelly, who previously shared showrunning duties with Raff.

“America’s Got Talent” completed its 19th season on NBC in September, after which Raff was notified that he was being cut. He has been with the series since its 2006 debut, while Donnelly joined in 2014 with Season 9.

Along with the flagship series, Raff had developed and served as showrunner on each of its spinoffs, including “America’s Got Talent: The Champions,” which ran for two seasons from 2019 to 2020; “AGT: Extreme,” which ran for one season in 2022; “America’s Got Talent: All-Stars,” which premiered in 2023 and has aired one season; and “America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League,” which premiered earlier this year and has aired one season.

Exclusive: America’s Got Talent is losing one of its longest-tenured talents.

Jason Raff, who has served as showrunner of the long-running NBC hit for 19 seasons, has left the show.

After 482 original episodes including 140 hours of live episodes, Raff told Deadline that he was informed that he was being let go the day after season 19 finished at the end of September due to budget cuts.

Raff also developed and served as showrunner for all of the show’s spinoffs including America’s Got Talent: The Champions, AGT: Extreme, America’s Got Talent: All-Stars and America’s Got Talent: Fantasy League.

Sam Donnelly, who has served as showrunner alongside Raff, will continue as solo showrunner on Season 20 show, which is produced by Fremantle and Syco Entertainment, and will likely air in May 2025.

Raff told Deadline that nearly 20 years ago, he was handed a DVD of a presentation for British broadcaster ITV called Paul’s O’Grady’s Got Talent.

Throughout the auditions, the four “AGT” judges (and the host as of Season 11) get to press the Golden Buzzer for an act that moves them emotionally, which sends the performer straight through to the live shows. During the now-defunct Judge Cuts round, guest panelists were allowed to push the button as well for their favorites. At the start of Season 18, Simon Cowell announced that there’d be an audience-voted buzzer for an act that wows the crowd.

The final auditions episode of “America’s Got Talent” aired on July 23, with the all-important live shows scheduled for August. On the June 25 episode of “America’s Got Talent,” the judges will meet L6, a Filipino family singing group who flew to the United States in order to fulfill their “late mother’s dream” of performing on NBC’s reality TV show. Darci Lynne, 19, is a multi-time America’s Got Talent performer, and while she got her start as a singing ventriloquist, she has proven that she is a great singer with or without puppets. She proved that with a social media post this week.

Accompanying herself on piano, Lynne sang a stripped-down version of the Abba song “The Winner Takes It All.” She captioned the video, “Abba truly gave us a gift with this song!!!” She also wore a shirt that promoted fellow singer Noah Kahan.

Since 2008, the TV academy has honored the work of reality and competition series presenters with the Emmy Award for Best Reality/Competition Host. During this year’s first-round nominations voting period, academy members from eight branches must choose from 48 entrants, which is down from 2023’s total of 67 and keeps the number of available nomination slots at five.

Included on the 2024 ballot is reigning victor RuPaul Charles, who has prevailed on all eight of his consecutive bids for “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Also seeking another win is Jeff Probst (“Survivor”), who dominated the category from 2008 to 2011 but has not been nominated since.

The peer groups allowed to vote for nominations in this category are casting directors, daytime programming, performers, producers, production executives, professional representatives, reality, and television executives. These voters have until June 24 to choose from the options listed below, and the lineup will be announced on July 17.

Since 2003, the Best Competition Program Emmy has been awarded annually in recognition of reality entertainment structured around talent or endurance contests. This year, there are 50 such options for TV academy members to choose from on their first-round nominations ballots, which means there will be five nominees announced on July 17. This is down from 59 entrants in 2023 and 81 in 2022.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 24 to cast their Emmy nominations ballots for their favorite competition programs. They must limit their choices to five, reflecting the number of eventual nominees.

Heading into the dramatic season ender, multiple TVLine polls had musician Kodi Lee as Fantasy League’s frontrunner, so imagine our surprise when the inspirational winner of Season 14 was among the first group of contestants eliminated.
