Nicole Kidman can easily be one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry with a slew of well-acclaimed projects to her name. Moreover, she has also never been one to shy away from challenging roles, often transforming herself completely for the characters she plays. However, her recent comments about being a character actor have sparked some strong reactions online.

Though she explained her reasoning for the same, it looks like not everyone agrees with her self-assessment. Fans on social media are calling her delusional for the claim, arguing that her Hollywood status and frequent leading lady roles don’t match what most people see as a true character actor. Let’s dive deeper!

Nicole Kidman dismisses movie star label – but fans aren’t buying it

Nicole Kidman Pushes Back on Industry Ageism at Kering Women in Motion Gala in Cannes: ‘Invest in Us and Believe in Us Because Our Voices Are So Important’
Image
One would expect Nicole Kidman to be quite used to being honored, considering she has an Academy Award, five Golden Globes, a BAFTA, two Emmys, the Cannes Film Festival’s 70th anniversary prize and the Venice Film Festival’s best actress award among those lining her trophy case. But the legendary actor was still moved by the gesture of being named the Kering Women in Motion awardee on Sunday night at the luxury fashion house’s 10th annual gala during the Cannes Film Festival.

“I’m so happy to be here supporting women’s voices in cinema,” Kidman said as she floated down the press line outside of the glamorous dinner held at the Place de la Castre, overlooking the Croisette. “I’m an advocate and want to continue moving forward with my pledge. It ain’t over.”

Following a clip reel of her greatest performances, including “Moulin Rouge,” “Far and Away...

Breaking Baz @ Cannes: Nicole Kidman, “The Barefoot Queen Of Cannes”, Wanted To Party On The Beach But Had To Fly Home For Her Kids’ Exams
Image
One can only marvel at Nicole Kidman’s astuteness. The actress and producer wanted to know where I was scooting off to after the Kering/Festival de Cannes Women in Motion dinner Sunday night. When I started to tell her about the afterparty for Akinola Davies Jr’s My Father’s Shadow, her eyes lit up.

“That’s one of the hits of the festival, right? First-time director, shot in Nigeria, right?”

Kidman then proceeded to quiz me about the movie and the filmmaker siblings Akinola and Wale Davies, who penned the script together.

She would’ve loved the party on the beach thrown jointly for My Father’s Shadow and Harry Lighton’s biker romance Pillion.

During his presentation to Kidman, Cannes fest chief Thierry Frémaux hailed her as the “Barefoot Queen of Cannes” because of her propensity to whip off her heels whenever possible. “Yeah, but you’re not allowed to do that now,...

Strong Festival, Soft Market at Cannes Enters Final Stretch
Image
Politics continues to trump business at this year’s Cannes film festival, with little in the way of deals out of the Marché, but lots of activist agitation on the red carpet and beyond.

Cannes’ first weekend, traditionally the period when the bidding wars begin and the first big buys are announced, has been almost frighteningly quiet. There was a single big deal — Mubi’s $24 million multi-territory deal, including North America, the U.K., Latin America and other countries — for the Lynne Ramsay’s Jennifer Lawrence Robert Pattinson starrer Die, My Love. It was a major deal for a finished film but also threw into sharp relief the lack of major pre-sales at Cannes so far, despite a market featuring jam-packed with hot packages.

The cautious, wait-and-see approach from buyers — already in evidence in Sundance and Berlin — continues amid growing uncertainty over financing and distribution models and, let’s face it,...

Nicole Kidman Gives Details on Upcoming 'Practical Magic' Sequel: 'Fun & Witchy'
Image
Nicole Kidman is excited for the new Practical Magic movie.

The 57-year-old actress revealed her thoughts on the upcoming sequel to the 1998 film, which also stars Sandra Bullock.

“Sandra‘s worked with [director Susanne Bier] too, so the two of us were like, ‘Well, this is the perfect triangle because we all know each other so well.’ And so to be able to work together on something that is fun and witchy, that’s fun and it has something very different to say [than the film Babygirl],” Nicole said during a press conference at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Keep reading to find out more…

If you didn’t know, the Practical Magic sequel was confirmed last summer, and a release date was announced this March.

If you didn’t see, earlier this week, Nicole revealed if she’d ever act alongside her husband Keith Urban.

Nicole Kidman Gives Update on ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel With Sandra Bullock: “It’s Fun and Witchy”
Image
More than eight years ago, Nicole Kidman made a commitment to herself, and to the careers of women behind the camera, that she would work with a female director every 18 months. In the years since, Kidman blew the original mission far and away and has since worked with 27.

“I was going to make it possible,” Kidman said of the lofty ambition during a headlining conversation on Sunday as part of Kering’s Women in Motion talks at the Majestic Hotel during the Cannes Film Festival. “For me, at this stage of my life, to have that purpose and to have that commitment is something that pulls me through as well. Because as much as I’m an actor and I’m looking for great roles, I’m also looking to experiment. I don’t want to be contained and I don’t want to be safe, so constantly looking for...

Nicole Kidman Has Now Worked With 27 Women Directors in 8 Years; She Urges ‘Financial Mentors’ to Invest in Unknown Female Filmmakers and ‘Take a Risk’
Image
Nicole Kidman has touched down at the Cannes Film Festival, where she is set to receive the Woman in Motion Award from Kering chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault, Cannes president Iris Knobloch and festival director Thierry Fremaux. Ahead of the awards dinner, Kidman joined Variety’s Angelique Jackson for a Kering Woman in Motion talk in which the Oscar winner spoke passionately about her commitment to uplifting female directors.

It was in 2017 when Kidman made a public vow to work with a woman director every 18 months. She had no idea if that would even be possible, but she was determined to see it through. And see it through she has. In the last eight years, plus factoring in her current projects in development, Kidman has teamed up with 27 female directors across her her various film and television projects.

“I was going to make it possible,” Kidman said during the Kering talk about her vow.

Nicole Kidman Talks Viral ‘Babygirl’ TikToks & Gives Mascha Schilinski’s ‘Sound Of Falling’ A Shoutout During Cannes Talk
Image
“With the film Babygirl, it reached its audience, strangely enough, through TikTok,” Nicole Kidman said this afternoon during one of Kering’s Women In Motion talks at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“It’s extraordinary to have that avenue for that film to be discovered,” Kidman continued, telling the audience that social media now provides filmmakers with new and exciting ways to disseminate their work.

“There are so many different ways now to reach people,” Kidman added. “ We launched at the Venice Film Festival, and they gave us extraordinary support. But we still had five months before launching in America, and it got this groundswell of support on social and TikTok and that literally made people go see the film. So you just never know how things are going to be discovered now.”

The Aussie added that she is always on the look out and willing to try her...

‘Pillion’ Review: Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling Are Magnificent in a Wildly Explicit and Strangely Sweet Bdsm Romance
Image
Dick-sucking, boot-licking, and ball-gagging are de rigueur for a movie like writer/director Harry Lighton’s wildly graphic and strangely moving Bdsm romance, “Pillion.” But for a British queer film that puts the particulars of a gay dominant-submissive affair up front and up close, actors Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling find the sweet center of a story marked by clamps, cages, and assless unitards. No doubt comparisons will arise to another A24 movie, “Babygirl,” which last year put Nicole Kidman on all fours, crying out to Harris Dickinson that “I’m gonna pee!” when actually she was just having an orgasm with another person for the first time.

Lighton, adapting Adam Mars-Jones’ book “Box Hill,” really does take us there in the delightful “Pillion,” with Skarsgård getting more emotionally naked than ever and almost physically more than he ever got as Eric Northman on TV’s “True Blood.” But not without,...

‘Pillion’ Review: Harry Melling & Alexander Skarsgård Find Unexpected Feeling In The Role Play [Cannes]
Image
Cannes – Let me be the first, perhaps second, possibly third critic to refer to Harry Lighton’s directorial debut, “Pillion,” as the gay flip side of “Babygirl.” Subject matter aside, it’s a movie with somewhat higher aspirations than its A24 stablemate. It’s a beast of sexual power dynamics and unrequited intimacy all on its own. And it may make even the most liberal viewer uncomfortable in the best way possible.

Cannes at the Midpoint: Weak Dealmaking, Strong Filmmaking
Image
Politics continues to trump business at this year’s Cannes film festival, with little in the way of deals out of the Marché, but lots of activist agitation on the red carpet and beyond. Cannes’ first weekend, traditionally the period when the bidding wars begin and the first big buys are announced, has been

almost frighteningly quiet.

The cautious, wait-and-see approach from buyers — already in evidence in Sundance and Berlin — continues amid growing uncertainty over financing and distribution models and, let’s face it, over the future of the movie business itself.

Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on “foreign-made” films, launched just ahead of Cannes, went off like a bomb under the already shaky foundations of the indie industry. Just how much damage has been done will only be possible to assess post-market when the dust has settled.

“The idea of tariffs is spooking people, especially financiers,” said one veteran indie producer.

Cannes 2025: Harris Dickinson's Film 'Urchin' is an Impressive Debut
Image
Stuck sleeping on the street, with no one to turn to for help, nowhere to go... How can you pull yourself back together in this situation? How does one get out of this rut? The next actor trying their hand at directing is the very talented British youngster Harris Dickinson. His feature directorial debut is a movie titled Urchin, premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. This film is also playing alongside Kristen Stewart's directorial debut titled The Chronology of Water – and between these two projects, it is Dickinson's film and choices and vision that really stand out. Both written & directed by Dickinson, Urchin follows the compelling story of a homeless man named Mike – a rough sleeper in London, trapped in a cycle of self-destruction as he attempts to turn his life around. Not only is the direction confident and the vision for this story clear,...

Breaking Baz @ Cannes: Harris Dickinson Shows Off John Lennon Mop Hairstyle At ‘Eddington’ Afterparty & Benicio Del Toro Reveals Why Robert De Niro Cut His Lines On Tony Scott’s ‘The Fan’
Image
Always makes me laugh when stars go to parties and then sequester themselves in roped-off VIP enclaves policed by grim-faced bouncers and eagle-eyed personal publicists. There was this odd sight of Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney leaning in from the outside to converse with Emma Stone seated inside the private zone at the afterparty for the Cannes Film Festival competition film Eddington directed by Ari Aster.

Guiney could’ve been invited in or Stone could’ve stepped out. I respect and admire actors of all ranks, and I understand their significance in our culture. And I get that they fear other people — I mean mere mortals. They might have an unapproved snap of themselves taken by someone. Me, for instance. Or they might have to have a conversation about which they weren’t given talking points ahead of time.

Anthony Hopkins always says — or he used to, anyway — that thespians can...

Harris Dickinson’s Directorial Debut ‘Urchin’ Gets 5-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation, Plus Lots of Love From Paul Mescal
Image
“Triangle and Sadness” and “Babygirl” star Harris Dickinson has delighted the Cannes crowd with his feature directorial debut “Urchin.”

The film, led by “Fear the Walking Dead” star Frank Dillane and a vivid portrayal of homelessness and mental health on the streets of London, had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard competition. “Urchin” earned its new filmmaker and his cast an enthusiastic 5-minute ovation.

Dickinson looked relieved at the reception, waving across the room to whoops from the crowd.

“It’s really an honor to be here and to share it with you guy is special,” he told the audience before the screening. “I’m nervous. I hope you enjoy it and if you don’t, tell us gently.”

Judging by the response, few didn’t enjoy it. Among those joining in the ovation was Paul Mescal, soon set to star alongside Dickinson in the upcoming quartet of...

Kristen Stewart Gets Emotional After Directorial Debut ‘The Chronology of Water’ Receives Warm Reception in Cannes
Image
Kristen Stewart’s long-awaited directorial debut The Chronology of Water received a warm reception at its world premiere in Cannes Friday night, with the crowd inside the Palais des Festivals greeting the film with a four-and-a-half-minute standing ovation.

An emotional Stewart embraced her actors with hugs and high-fives as the ovation carried on. She later bounded across the auditorium to give Cannes head Thierry Frémaux a long hug.

“I don’t have anything else to say; I left it all on the screen,” Stewart said in part. “Just thank you all for being here. Seriously, we finished the movie five minutes ago — it’s not even done. We got so lucky, and I’m so grateful to be here.”

She then gestured to her star, Imogen Poots, to take the mic, saying, “Truly, your body is the movie, I’m giving it to you.”

An emotional Poots obliged, saying only,...

‘Elle’ Adds a ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Star to the ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Series
Image
Today, Prime Video announced a major development in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. The streamer revealed through Deadline that none other than '90s heartthrob James Van Der Beek has joined the cast in a recurring role. The Dawson's Creek and Apartment 23 star will share the screen with the new Elle Woods (Lexi Minetree), but at this point we don't know in how many episodes he will participate. A release date for Elle is yet to be announced.

Per Deadline, Van Der Beek will play the city’s new mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent, Dean Wilson. Since the new series covers Elle Woods' high school years, this may suggest that Dean Wilson and the young girl will go head-to-head on different occasions. In the movie series, Elle became known for not catering to people in positions of power, so the series might show how the future lawyer developed her backbone.

3 Hollywood Actors Make Directorial Debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2025
Image
The Cannes Film Festival 2025 is in full swing, and as always, it’s giving us cinematic gems, red carpet drama, and a few unexpected plot twists (both on screen and off). Held annually on the French Riviera, Cannes isn’t just another film festival; it’s the global stage where auteurs debut bold visions, legends are born, and standing ovations can last longer than some short films. From the prestigious Palme d’Or to the indie-celebrating Un Certain Regard section, Cannes showcases everything from highbrow art to raw debut features, all judged by an international jury that sets the tone for the cinematic year ahead.

But this year? The buzz isn’t just about the films. Cannes threw everyone a curveball by introducing a new dress code—no more naked dresses, no more towering ballgowns. The fashion crowd is still scrambling, but honestly, the real shake-up is happening behind the camera.

Harris Dickinson Unpacks ‘Urchin’: “I Wanted to Direct Before I Wanted to Act”
Image
Harris Dickinson and Frank Dillane can’t help but giggle.

The pair are now closely bonded after shooting Dickinson’s directorial debut Urchin, which Hollywood “It” Boy Dickinson — soon set to headline Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopics for Sony — describes as a miracle (seven times, in fact).

The London-set film follows Mike, played by British actor Dillane, whom audiences might know best from Fear the Walking Dead, Renegade Nell or as a young Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Half Blood-Prince. We watch Mike, a drifter, sleep on the city streets and attempt to patch together his life while caught in the throes of addiction. In between working as a chef, litter-picker, and wrestling Dickinson on the ground, Mike relies on meditative tapes and his no-nonsense social worker to get sober.

“I think people’s tolerance for stories like this is often low because they don’t want to look at...

Lionsgate’s ‘Ballerina’ Sets Russia Release as Studios Say Cold War Thaw Is ‘Inevitable’ (Exclusive)
Image
Who will blink first? That is the question when it comes to which studio will resume distributing films in Russia after a three-year moratorium sparked by the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The answer appears to be Lionsgate, which is planning to release the Ana de Armas-led “John Wick” spinoff “Ballerina” on June 5 through Russian distributor Atmosfera Kino. A Lionsgate spokesperson declined comment, though a person familiar with the matter told Variety that the studio is willing to “move forward in Russia on a case-by-case basis,” a policy shift attributed to the “passage of time” and that “sentiment has changed.”

The move comes with hopes that the major studios will follow Lionsgate amid declining international box office revenues and anticipation that a Russia-Ukraine détente will be reached given that U.S. President Donald Trump has prioritized the matter in the early days of his second term. Neither Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps...

Cannes Rising Star: Meet Harris Dickinson’s French ‘Urchin’ Gem, Megan Northam

The work of Megan Northam might not ring a bell outside of the actress’ native France. The 30-year-old, born and raised in Nantes, has starred in the likes of comedy drama series Greek Salad and drama film The Passengers of the Night. She was on the receiving end of a lot of awards buzz — including a coveted César Award nomination for best actress — after her performance in last year’s Rabia, Mareike Engelhardt’s film about the true story of a young woman who arrives in Raqqa, Syria, and joins a home for future wives of combatants.

Now, however, Northam opens herself up to a shiny new audience with Harris Dickinson‘s Urchin. “As a French woman with an English father, I would love to continue shooting and thinking in English,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter about her first international film. “It’s a part of me that I can’t express in France.

Cannes Film Festival 2025: All You Need to Know
Image
The French Riviera is set to host international cinema again this year. Getting featured in the Cannes Film Festival is a lifelong ambition for many filmmakers, and once again, its 78th edition is going to fulfill many of these dreams. The Festival will take place from May 13 to May 24, 2025, and this year is particularly interesting for some new reasons.

One of the reasons is the recent announcement by President Donald Trump about potential tariffs on films from countries across the border. Other than these, there will be the usual glamorous red carpets, neck-to-neck competition, and maybe a bit of political drama as well, which makes the Cannes Film Festival a special event.

Jury of the Cannes Film Festival 2025

The jury lineup is quite stacked this year. It’s French actress Juliette Binoche who is leading the Main Competition jury, and she is joined by a talented team. Halle Berry’s...

In a new interview, Tom looked back at working with Nicole and late director Stanley Kubrick on the 1999 movie Eyes Wide Shut.

Keep reading to find out more…“I flew out to his house, and I landed in his backyard. I read the script the day before and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films,” Tom recalled to Sight and Sound, referring to Kubrik who died in 1999 at the age of 70.

“Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other,” he added. “And when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice]. Because, obviously, she’s a great actress.”

The Beatles: Barry Keoghan says Ringo Starr wanted him to play the drums for him
Barry Keoghan at an event for 81st Golden Globe Awards (2024)
Actors don’t always meet the real-life figures they portray, but Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) got to do just that when he hung out with Ringo Starr. The actor is set to play the iconic drummer in Sam Mendes’ The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event alongside Harris Dickinson (Babygirl) as John Lennon, Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) as Paul McCartney, and Joseph Quinn (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as George Harrison.

Keoghan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and confirmed that he’d met with Starr after he was cast in the role. “It was one of those moments where you’re just in awe and just froze,” he said. “And when I was talking to him, I couldn’t look at him. I was nervous, like right now. He said, ‘You can look at me.’ And again — you’re playing Ringo Starr. My job is to observe and take in kind of mannerisms and study,...

Thunderbolts* Director Jake Schreier In Talks To Helm Marvel Studios' X-men Reboot
Image
It looks like Marvel Studios has finally found a director to take the helm of the long-awaited X-Men reboot.

According to Deadline, Marvel is staying in-house for MCU debut of the Children of the Atom, with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier in early talks to step behind the camera.

Apparently, early reactions to Thunderbolts* and buzz about the movie being viewed as a return to form for the studio "sealed the deal" for Schreier after months of meetings with potential directors.

"Marvel and Schreier had an incredible experience working together on Thunderbolts*, a film that has since won over critics and fans becoming Marvel’s best reviewed film since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. While that recent meeting sealed the deal, Marvel execs were well aware how much Schreirer loved the X-Men comics, an early sign that he would ultimately get one of the those meetings to pitch his vision of...

One Of The Best (And Most Underrated) Superhero Movies Of The 2010s Is Taking Over Max
Image
It's always nice to see a decent movie faring well on streaming services. Most streamers' charts are typically populated by some of the most questionable "content" you're ever likely to encounter on your journey through the streaming sphere, but there are still some standouts that crop up from time to time. Case in point: "Chronicle."

This 2012 superhero origin story/sci-fi thriller/teen drama caused a minor stir upon its debut for presenting an original take on the superhero genre using a found-footage approach. The film also put stars Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan on the map and established director Josh Trank as one of the most promising young filmmakers of the time. Sadly, his next film, 2015's "Fantastic Four", proved to be a box office flop that put Trank in director jail, but "Chronicle" remains a well-respected directorial debut.

The film follows three Seattle high school seniors: DeHaan's Andrew,...

Ofcom Boss: Landmark UK Supreme Court Ruling On Definition Of A Woman “May Affect” How Regulator Judges Complaints About TV Shows
Image
The landmark UK Supreme Court ruling on the definition of a woman could play a part in Ofcom’s assessment of complaints about TV shows, according to the regulator’s CEO.

Melanie Dawes acknowledged to the Culture, Media and Sport Committee (Cmsc) today that last month’s controversial judgement, which defines a woman by biological sex, “is relevant and may affect how we approach any assessment of a complaint.”

She stressed that Ofcom “did not and does not give guidance to TV or radio companies about how they should handle questions of gender identity and sex-based rights.”

Several years back, Dawes was quoted chastising the BBC for its “extremely inappropriate” decision to “balance” appearances by transgender people on current affairs shows with activists from anti-trans pressure groups.

But today Dawes said “I think there was a bit of confusion around that story” as she noted the complexity of the Supreme Court ruling.

Omigod You Guys! New ‘Legally Blonde’ Prequel Set Images Show Lexi Minetree as ‘Elle’
Image
The new Elle Woods is out and about in new set images from the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series. Lexi Minetree, who was handpicked by original star Reese Witherspoon to portray the younger version of the character, is clad head-to-toe in pink in the new images, which come via Backgrid. The prequel series, Elle, is set to stream on Prime Video. The images portray the high-school-aged Woods on a shopping trip with a group of friends, all wearing distinctly 1990s fashions. That's in keeping with the series' timeframe, which will depict the high school years of Woods before the events of the 2001 movie, which saw her head off to law school and prove to be surprisingly adept at jurisprudence.

The film subsequently spawned one theatrical sequel, a failed TV pilot, and a Broadway musical. The role launched Witherspoon to superstardom, and remains one of her most iconic roles. In the images,...

MCU Star's Underwater Survival Thriller With 91% Rt Audience Score Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
The MCU may not hold the same place in popular culture as it once did, but it remains a key Hollywood franchise. Marvel is responsible for the career comeback of Robert Downey Jr., who debuted as Iron Man back in 2008, but it also helped to establish other stars like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Chris Evans, among others. In the post-Avengers: Endgame (2019) era, new MCU movies have been focused on setting up a new generation of heroes, paving the way for new stars.

Black Widow (2021) marked Florence Pugh's first entry in the MCU, and she has gone on to become a major movie star outside of Marvel. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), similarly, served as a platform for Simu Liu, who was previously best known for Kim's Convenience. Liu hasn't made quite the same splash that Pugh has as a Marvel newcomer, but he did...

Image
Harris Dickinson and Nicola Coughlan are among hundreds of names demanding action.

The Babygirl actor and the Bridgerton star join names like Bella Ramsey, Moly Manning and Paapa Essiedu in signing an open letter calling for industry action on trans rights after the UK Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this month, defining a woman based on biological sex, via Deadline.

The letter was started by development producer Sid Strickland of Motive Pictures and script editor Jack Casey, and expresses solidarity for the trans, non-binary and intersex communities affected by the ruling.
