- When Krypton was destroyed, Kara Zor-El's escape pod collided with the Monitor's Satellite. Initially hesitant, the Monitor rescued her, providing care and education. Realizing she had lost her memory, he chose not to reveal Krypton's fate. Over time, Kara discovered her escape pod in the Satellite's hangar and learned the truth about her homeworld's destruction. Furious with the Monitor for withholding the information and failing to prevent Krypton's demise, she confronted him. Under pressure, he revealed that her cousin Kal-El was alive on Earth, prompting Kara to set out to find him.
The Monitor continued to observe Kara, including her time training with the Legion of Super-Heroes. When she returned to Earth as Supergirl in search of Superman and Batman, the Monitor sought her help to prevent an impending anti-matter wave that threatened all reality. He bestowed a portion of his power upon her, transforming her into Harbinger and tasking her with gathering heroes from across the multiverse.
Years earlier, on Earth-2, Psycho-Pirate had interrogated that world's Doctor Fate, a renowned codebreaker. During the encounter, Psycho-Pirate revealed his own origins and, recognizing his potential role in the coming Crisis, Doctor Fate granted him the ability to travel between universes. Adopting the alias of the Advisor, Psycho-Pirate attempted to incite conflict between Atlanteans and the United States but failed. Pursued by Earth-1's Flash, he fled Earth-2, traveling the multiverse and seeking power. After repeated failures, Harbinger recruited him for the Monitor's mission, bringing him to the Satellite alongside the gathered heroes.
In the wake of the first anti-matter wave that struck Earth-1, the heroes learned it was merely the beginning of a series of devastating assaults. To protect reality, the heroes were deployed across the multiverse to operate and defend vibrational towers designed to stabilize the remaining Earths. To maintain order, the Monitor utilized the Satellite's technology to amplify Psycho-Pirate's empathic powers, calming the populations of endangered Earths. Struggling with the mental strain, Psycho-Pirate convinced the Monitor to share some of his power, increasing his abilities. Shortly thereafter, he was abducted by the Anti-Monitor, the mastermind behind the anti-matter waves. In exchange for Psycho-Pirate's loyalty, the Anti-Monitor promised him dominion over a smaller, controlled world.
As weaker anti-matter waves subsided, shadow demons began to attack the vibrational towers simultaneously. Superman led the Justice League to defend Earth-1, Batman coordinated a multiversal Bat-Family on Earth-2, and Wonder Woman fought valiantly on Earth-43, an Amazon-ruled world. Although the heroes discovered the shadow demons were vulnerable to intense light, their efforts were undermined by Psycho-Pirate, who used his enhanced powers to inflame hatred and rivalry among the heroes, leading them to turn on each other. Amid the chaos, Psycho-Pirate fled to another Earth. With the towers left undefended, the next anti-matter wave obliterated several Earths, including Earth-43. Overwhelmed by grief and rage, Supergirl, her emotions amplified by Psycho-Pirate's influence, killed the Monitor in a fit of fury.
On Earth-1, John Stewart encountered a mysterious homeless man during the defense effort. Their confrontation triggered the man's memories, revealing him to be the sorcerer John Constantine. As more shadow demons attacked, Stewart sacrificed his Green Lantern battery, unleashing a powerful light bomb that destroyed the shadow demons besieging Earth-1's tower. In retaliation, the shadow demons coalesced into a massive, singular form, revealing themselves as extensions of the Anti-Monitor's will. Immune to the heroes' attacks, the Anti-Monitor prepared to unleash the final blow, leaving the heroes powerless as they faced the imminent destruction of Earth-1.
