Despite some excellent movies hitting theaters, 2024 was, to use a sports phrase, a rebuilding year. The 2023 Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes ground Hollywood to a halt before the studios ultimately agreed to some much-needed concessions for the folks who physically make the films and TV shows we all love, and the downstream effects of that unnecessarily drawn-out labor stoppage spilled into 2024. Movies and shows that were supposed to come out needed time to restart production, studios delayed some releases into 2025, and the industry as a whole experienced a contraction. The first half of this year was rough at the box office, but thanks to several major wins near the end of the year, theatrical exhibition managed to stay alive and make up a ton of ground.
While we'll likely be seeing the effects of the strikes and the subsequent contraction for a while, the floodgates are preparing to open for...

Feature films have not been kind to the Looney Tunes. There was a time when the wacky adventures of Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny and their animated pals were the best and funniest shorts on the silver screen, an era that lasted decades. But most of their longer movies were repackaged classic skits, thinly strung together by new bookend material based on whatever movie or TV show was hot at the time, like “Fantasy Island” or “Ghostbusters.” Then of course there were the “Space Jam” films, two of the most creatively bankrupt and shamelessly tacky brand exploitations in the history of [checks notes] everything.
Until now the only great “Looney Tunes” feature was the one that completely flopped, Joe Dante’s inspired and hilarious “Back in Action,” which smartly skewered the callow capitalism that made the “Space Jam” movies a cinematic crime. The new film, “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,...

Wayne's World breakout star, Tia Carrere, has had an illustrious career since starring in the 1992 comedy. Waynes World follows Wayne and his best friend Garth, as they host a popular TV show in his basement that gets noticed by a TV network executive. Waynes World was a huge success when it premiered. The movie, which only had a budget of $20 million, ended up being a huge success and making $183.1 million at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). The sequel, however, Waynes World 2, did not perform as well as the first movie.
Carrere, who played Cassandra Wong in the classic movie has amassed over 100 credits since she began her career. Since landing her first role in Aloha Summer, Carrere has appeared in several movies and TV shows, including General Hospital, Airwolf, and The A-Team. David Zaslav's scythe has slashed yet another beloved part of our childhoods: Cartoon Network dot com, home of games Nightmare-athon, Outnumbuh'd, Teen Titans Battle Blitz and The Cobblepot Caper, has been bled out. Instead of being greeted by the scribbled smiles of Gumball, Jake and Steven on the homepage, site visitors are now immediately being redirected to Max.
“Looking for episodes of your favorite Cartoon Network shows? Of the many crimes the Animaniacs' notorious nemesis, David Zaslav, has perpetrated during his reign of terror as CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, his blatant disrespect for the Looney Tunes ranks high on the list. As if doing little to promote the terrific modern "Looney Tunes Cartoons" series that are available exclusively on Max wasn't bad enough, Zaslav's regime has also yanked a whole lot of golden age "Looney Tunes" shorts from its streaming service and killed the live-action/animated hybrid feature "Coyote vs. Acme" solely for the sake of a tax write-off. Sadly, it seems we'll never know if Dave Green's New Yorker-inspired legal satire was an entertaining as the early buzz suggested. Nevertheless, 2024 is shaping up to be a major year for Bugs, Daffy, Porky, and the rest of the Looney gang.

The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

Streaming service HBO Max will begin removing up to 36 titles, many of which are originals, from its digital library this week.
Earlier in August, HBO Max removed six film titles and also announced that it would no longer be releasing DC’s “Batgirl” or the animated “Scoob! Holiday Haunt.” The strategy is driven by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans to combine HBO Max and Discovery+ next summer.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max said in a statement Wednesday. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”

An ongoing story as of late is the impact of the recent merger of Warner Bros Studios and Discovery. The new CEO, David Zaslav, has already made several controversial decisions that are currently being met with criticism. One big note is the canceling of two features that were near completion. DC’s Batgirl, and the animated film Scoob! Holiday Haunt was shelved with no intention of ever being released so the company could claim them as tax write-offs.
Another big money-saving decision was to pull movies and shows from their streaming platform, HBO Max, that were underperforming so they could save on residuals. The company had already silently pulled a few titles — as recent as the pandemic-shot 2021 film, Locked Down. But they have announced the removal of around 40 titles as early as this week.

HBO Max will remove almost 36 titles from its service as early as this week, Variety has confirmed.
A spokesperson for HBO Max attributed the decision to the pending merge of the platform with Discovery+, which is also owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.
“As we work toward bringing our content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and discovery+,” HBO Max’s statement reads. “That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”
Taking off the titles from streaming would also help Warner Bros. Discovery cut costs by removing lesser-watched programs to save money on residuals. An exact date or time when the titles will be taken off has not been announced.
Although HBO Max has removed several titles in the past weeks, including several Warner Bros. films and HBO TV shows such as “Camping,” “Vinyl,” “Mrs. Fletcher” and “Run,...

When Uncle Grandpa accidentally flips the multidimensional switch on his Rv, he creates a tear in the universe that collides the worlds of some of Cartoon Network’s most beloved shows… That’s the set up for Cartoon Network Battle Crashers, the side-scrolling, kid-friendly beat ‘em-up from GameMill/Maximum Games – which has, a year on from its initial release, made it’s Nintendo Switch debut.

In spite of the fact that I grew up watching the channel, I have to say that Cartoon Network is in a bit of a golden age right now. Programs such as Adventure Time, Steven Universe and Regular Show have been able to entertain children and adults alike. Despite the popularity of said shows, though, developers have struggled adapting these properties. This isn’t exactly a new problem for Cn, but it seems even worse due to the slightly improved landscape of licensed video games. Rather than focus on one specific property, licensed game experts GameMill Entertainment tried a different approach with the multiplayer brawler, Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers.
Bringing together the properties of Cartoon Network is a tough task, but Battle Crashers accomplishes this with a single cutscene. Oddball Uncle Grandpa accidentally drives his Ug-rv through different dimensions, which leads to him acquiring a few new passengers. Tagging...

It’s some kind of important civic duty we’re supposed to participate in within the first eight days or so, but that doesn’t help much. Oh well, hopefully the new offerings from Hulu will remind us of what it is or keep us distracted long enough that we don’t feel bad about missing it. Thankfully, the latter option should be pretty easy to accomplish in November, because Hulu is getting a good amount of solidly binge-worthy TV shows and movies.

October on Netflix brings "Beasts of No Nation," starring Idris Elba as a ruthless African warlord who trains child soldiers. Directed by Cary Fukunaga ("True Detective"), it debuts on Netflix and in theaters on October 16.
While a lot of great horror movies are leaving Netflix in October, some new ones are coming exclusively to the platform: "Manson Family Vacation," (starring Jay Duplass as a guy whose brother is obsessed with Charles Manson) and "Circle," in which 50 strangers are held captive and must choose which one of them will live. We're also excited for "The Nightmare," the buzzy documentary about sleep terrors from the directors of "Room 237."
And if you want more horror, there are new seasons coming to Netflix, including "iZombie," "The Vampire Diaries," "Supernatural," "Hemlock Grove," and "American Horror Story: Freak Show."
Available Oct. 1

“Don’t worry, bro. None of this is canon.”
That’s how Uncle Grandpa, star of a show so tonally divorced from Steven Universe that absolutely none of this should work at all, pops into Beach City. What follows is a bizarre adventure that’s equal parts Terry Gilliam cartoon, bad anime, and Fourth Wall demolition session. Steven, frustrated by his inability to summon the magical shield his mother bequeathed to him, calls out to the universe for help and receives a reply in the form of a hollering, reality-warping weirdo who sets about trying to unlock Steven’s latent potential. Mostly by firing bees at him.
It’s unclear how much of this will matter in the overall scheme of the show, and I’m sure some people will be upset about an unannounced detour into bat country, but even though it doesn’t really strike any of the gentle,...

The thing I love about voice actors is that even if you don’t know their names or faces, you will “know that voice.” And considering voice actor Eric Bauza was responsible for one of my favorite scenes in the voice actor documentary I Know That Voice, I’m super glad that I not only know that voice, but got to interview it (and the man behind it!) at this year’s New York Comic Con.
Eric, who hails from Canada and began his animation career as a character designer who also did animatics, is now most known for the legacy voice of Marvin the Martian from The Looney Tunes Show and for a myriad of other great voices, including Tiger Claw on the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, Foop on The Fairly OddParents, Belly Bag on Uncle Grandpa, Buhdeuce on Breadwinners, Amadeus Cho on Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher,...

Introduction
Welcome to the first installment of “Living Pictures on the Small Screen,” a weekly column dedicated to animated programming on television. Cultural commentary inevitably comes with bias, and I wanted to create this column in appreciation of the people and shows that helped me overcome my own bias regarding animation. Like most kids in my socioeconomic sphere, I grew up watching cartoons. Some of them were legitimately good (Batman: The Animated Series and Rocko’s Modern Life) and some of them were simply there when I turned the TV on after school (Inspector Gadget and Cow and Chicken). Once I started taking film and television more seriously as an adult, it was hard not to associate animation with childhood. It was even harder to appreciate animated films and series–which I had to view from a distance, since I wasn’t witnessing real people on the screen–alongside things...

(Cbr)KaBOOM! will publish a comic based on Cartoon Network’s hit animated series Uncle Grandpa as part of Boom! Studios’ first-look deal with the cable channel. Created by Pete Browngardt, "Uncle Grandpa" is a surreal adventure comedy the centers on everyone’s magical uncle and grandfather, who travels the world in his mystical Rv, helping children with their problems. Did we mention he’s accompanied by a talking fanny pack, an anthropomorphic dinosaur, a photo cutout of a tiger and a talking slice of pizza? Well, he is. “When we had the opportunity to sit down with 'Uncle Grandpa' creator Pete Browngardt and pick his brain we were instantaneously inspired by what him and his team have created,” Boom! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon said in a statement. “Pete is a bona fide comics reader and that can only magnify what we’re doing on the series.” Uncle Grandpa...

Exclusive: Cartoon Network is entering the longform business. The 20-year-old network has greenlighted its first miniseries, Over The Garden Wall. The 10-epsiode comedy-fantasy mini is based on the short Tome Of The Unknown, which hails from Cartoon Network Studios’ shorts program and won the best animation short film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival last month. Elijah Wood — reprising his role from Tome — Melanie Lynskey and Collin Dean lead the voice cast of Over The Garden Wall. It revolves around two brothers, Wirt (Wood) and Greg (Dean), who find themselves lost in a mysterious land and try to find their way home, aided by a wise old woodsman and a bluebird named Beatrice (Lynskey). Over The Garden Wall was created by Pat McHale, who wrote and directed the original short and also worked on Cartoon Net’s Adventure Time. Produced by Cartoon Network Studios, the mini will premiere in the fall.
