Exclusive: Prolific duo Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter have set their Berlanti/Schechter Films banner to an exclusive first-look feature film deal at Netflix.
The film pact with Netflix comes two and a half years before Berlanti’s mega overall deal with Warner Bros. Television — valued at as much as $400 million — is slated to end. It signals that the most prolific producer in the history of television, who had renewed his TV studio deal with the previous Warner Media/Warner Bros TV regime, could be in play.
Berlanti, who broke his own record for most series on television at the same time multiple times, currently has 14 on-air series produced by his Berlanti Productions. That includes the popular Netflix drama You — picked up for a second and third season — and several CW shows that are popular draws on Netflix including Riverdale, All American and The Flash. His company also produced the streamer’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Not one mainstream Hollywood film released in 2018 included a trans character, a Thursday report from GLAAD media said.
The watchdog’s Studio Responsibility Index, an annual look at wide film releases, grades the big studios on overall Lgbtq representation. The report also scores the integrity of content using GLAAD’s Vito Russo Test. Film’s statistics stand in embarrassing contrast to the trailblazing work being done on television, the report illustrates.
“In the year that saw the groundbreaking television series ‘Pose’ put a multitude of trans stories front and center and trans creators behind the scenes, ‘Supergirl’ introduced America to TV’s first trans superhero, and ‘A Fantastic Woman’ took home an Oscar; there were still no transgender characters in any major studio film,” the report said.

Super-producer Greg Berlanti has set his next feature directing effort as part of an overall film deal at 20th Century Fox.
Berlanti and the Elizabeth Gabler-run imprint Fox 2000 will team on an adaption of “The Editor,” about a young author named James who’s shepherded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis when the former first lady worked as a book editor in 1990s New York City. When Onassis pushes him to write a more “authentic” ending, he is forced to confront the truth about his complex family.
Berlanti and Fox 2000 successfully collaborated on last year’s “Love, Simon” a coming-out dramedy that turned $66.3 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. A production timeline was not immediately clear, but “The Editor’s” release will fall under the purview of new Fox owner Disney when it comes to market.
“The Editor” is based on Steven Rowley’s novel of the same name, which will be released by G.

Premiering at FrightFest in London on the 28th August, Teddy Bears Picnic is a proof of concept horror short from Tom Hodge – aka The Dude Designs – the poster artist behind artwork for films such Hobo with A Shotgun (2011), The Innkeepers (2011), The Heat (2013), WolfCop (2014), The Other Side of The Door (2016), and They Live.
Written, produced, directed and financed by Hodge, the short film stars Abby Miller (Justified, Aquarius & The Sinner TV series), Laurence R Harvey (Human Centipede 2+3, ABCs of Death 2 & The Editor) and Lorelei Winterfrost; and is inspired by the classic 1907 melody of the same name… only this time re-envisioned as a nightmarish fable that twists the concept of childhood innocence!
Says Hodge:
I love horror as a genre for its pure unabashed creativity. It gives you a wider scope to create unique characters and settings. What are nightmares if not essentially creative? I particularly loved the creativity of high...

When practical effects drive a film’s talking points, I pause. Gruesome monster designs and caved-in prosthetics merely supplement story, yet a film like Harbinger Down piles all its eggs into one blood-soaked basket. Fans yearn for realistic SFX, and filmmakers always aim to dethrone The Thing‘s bar-setting kingship. But at what cost? Take Astron-6’s The Void. Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski create Lovecraftian hellbeasts from synthetic molding, yet a cultist presence could have used more fleshing out. Bodies splatter, character structures crumble and visuals outweigh storytelling.
Good thing the ratio of destruction:emptiness airs on the side of insanity.
In this Assault On Precinct 13 meets The Beyond smashup, police officer Daniel Carter (Aaron Poole) walks into the wrong hospital. Given his bloodied passenger, he doesn’t have much of a choice – but white-hooded strangers who lurk outside aren’t noticed until far too late. Carter, Dr. Richard...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Screen Media Films. Directors/writers: Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski. Cast: Kathleen Munroe, Ellen Wong, Kenneth Welsh, Aaron Poole, Art Hindle and Stephanie Belding. The Void is an upcoming horror release, from Canadian filmmakers Astron 6. This team has been responsible for a number of decent horror features, including: Manborg (2011), Father's Day (2011), The Editor (2014) and others. Their latest film deals with the horrors of birth and the possible aftermath of death? The film does not have an answer to mortality, or immortality, though. Much of the film takes place in hell and veteran horror fans will see some of Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987), here. In costume, makeup and setting, this film wears its influences on its sleeve. This viewer enjoyed the practical effects, in the film. But, the film's theme and message comes across as convoluted, for at least one viewer.

Described as The Warriors meets The Wraith in the press release (I'd argue there's some Psychomania in here as well), Moped Knights is a fun little slice of 80’s-inspired horror. The short film features a resurrected gang of moped riders out for blood. Directed by Mike Pecci (12 Kilometers) and written by Tony Fernandez, Moped Knights was created as a pitch for a longer series. If you're into great production values and original music from DJ Voltran and Tim Leefo --- as well as from the popular retro-wave act Perturbator --- you'll enjoy this short. Starring Lance Williams as the Rider, Moped Knights introduces the real-life Boston moped gang The Uglies. The film originally premiered at the Boston Underground Film Festival, where it opened for The Editor, directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew...

“the first film rated V for violence”
“Positively the most horrifying film ever made”
“Guaranteed to upset your stomach”
This is how you market a film, folks. All of the above (and more) is found on the poster for Michael Armstrong’s Mark of the Devil (1970), a particularly nasty bit of Witchploitation that surprisingly manages to shine a provocative light on religious hysteria and hypocrisy.
This German production was released in North America by Hallmark Releasing (not the greeting card company, but a film distributor that released another bastion of good tidings, Last House on the Left) in April of ’72, and myriad distributors in various parts of Europe early ’70. Reviews were decidedly mixed, but the box office was huge, especially for a grimy exploitative horror film that happily wallows in its own depravity. I’m inclined to agree with audiences here – while not a lot of fun, Mark of the Devil...

Frankenstein Created Bikers was described to me as a two-and-a-half hour "exploitation epic" --- shot over 30 days in 10 cities with a cast of 70 actors. A screener for a strange indie film called Harvest Lake landed in my inbox recently, and instead of a straight review, I decided to interview the filmmakers to get more details on their bizarro opus. Harvest Lake follows four friends who go to a lakeside house to celebrate a birthday with sex, drugs, booze, a campfire, and more sex. It's not quite a horror film, not really an exploitation flick, and I'm undecided if it could be classified as science fiction. Due to its elevated score and photography, the film encapsulates all of these genres and more, with some odd surreal moments that will surprise its viewers --- with Tristan Risk (American Mary, The Editor) stealing every scene she's even --- even if those scenes include alien appendages. The film...

Rey Ciso was once the greatest editor the world had ever seen. Since a horrific accident left him with four wooden fingers on his right hand, he’s had to resort to cutting pulp films and trash pictures. When the lead actors from the film he’s been editing turn up murdered at the studio, Rey is fingered as the number one suspect. The bodies continue to pile up in this absurdist giallo-thriller as Rey struggles to prove his innocence and learn the sinister truth lurking behind the scenes.

I have been a fan of the Italian giallo subgenre for 30 years since my initiation into it was precipitated by my first viewing of Creepers (1985), the severely cut version of Dario Argento’s Phenomena, my personal favorite film of his. Subsequent viewings of films by both Mr. Argento and his mentor, Mario Bava, as well as Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, Luigi Cozzi, and Michele Soavi solidified a love for the putrid and the fantastic, and anyone who has seen these movies knows how delightfully entertaining they are: off-kilter camera angles, ludicrous dialogue, and what writer Todd French referred to as “a maddening narrative looseness” are present in these films in a way that they are absent in other genres. There is just nothing like an Italian giallo film. With all of the mock horror films that have been made going back to 1981’s Student Bodies and the later,...

If you head to the multiplex, you're going to find movies made for a mass audience. Jurassic World, just to make its budget and marketing costs back, has to be carefully constructed to appeal to every living sentient moviegoer. If the film has a chance of showing profit, then there has to be a chance that Everyone on earth will find something in it worth watching. That's great if you're making a family-dinosaur-attack-chase movie (or is you're making a happy meal, for that matter). I get it. I understand. I'm not the mass audience member. I'm not the key demographic. Films on that level aren't about art, they're commerce. Product. Some are fun. Some aren't. But they all have to chase that generic audience to make even.
Before it comes off like I'm just blasting Hollywood (and I am), I'll take this moment to just get to the point.

If you head to the multiplex, you're going to find movies made for a mass audience. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of homages to the giallo genre including Peter Strickland’s clever, slightly bizarre and altogether mesmerizing thriller Berberian Sound Studio, as well as Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy’s The Editor and the gorgeous, sometimes clever, and visceral Amer from directors Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. Now an Argentinian filmmaker is taking his stab at the genre with Francesca which will have its world premiere at Sitges in Spain at the beginning of October. If you know and love giallo you will love the first poster they’ve released to promote the film. Enjoy!
Synopsis: “It’s been 15 years since the disappearance of little Francesca, daughter of the renowned storyteller, poet and dramatist Vittorio Visconti, and the community is stalked by a psychopath bent on cleaning the city of “impure and damned souls”. Moretti and Succo, questioned by the ineffectiveness of the police force,...

In the exclusive scene above, Margarit, accompanied only by her seeing-eye dog and a skimpy silk kimono, is trapped by an unknown assailant. Her boyfriend, meanwhile, attempts to save her by breaking down the door with an axe. The latest cult film offering from the lads at Astron-6 is the Giallo inspired horror fest The Editor is coming to a cinema near you this Friday. That is, if you live in Ontario, Canada. I do not know what is up with the rest of my country but there you have it. This hilarious send-up of classic genre cinema, spins the twisted tale of a once-prolific film editor who becomes the prime suspect in a series of murders haunting a seedy 1970s film studio. Rey Ciso was once the greatest editor the world had ever seen. Since a horrific accident left him with four wooden fingers on his right hand, he's had to resort to cutting pulp films and trash pictures. When the lead actors...

The creative team of Astron 6 has completed The Editor. This film had its premiere in 2014, at the Toronto Int. Film Festival. Now, this giallo-inspired thriller is coming to several Canadian theatres, on Sept. 18th. This release will be followed up by another as The Editor releases on home entertainment formats, Oct. 6th. The film is a send-up starring Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (The ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Tristan Risk and Udo Kier. Hopefully, actress Paz's appearance in this film has not ruined her career, forever. And now, fans can preview the film's horrifying launch here. The story follows an almost out-of-work editor. It is suspected that his desperation has led to murder. But, only Rey (Adam Brooks) believes in his innocence. Now, Rey must prove to others that he is not behind a series of murders,...

Directors Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, two of the five partners from the Canadian film production company Astron-6, have reunited from their 2011 effort Father’s Day (a feature co-directed by all five members of their collective) for The Editor. Another reconstitution of vintage genre cinema, this time around they satirize the more ridiculous elements of the once popular giallo movement of film, those Italian thrillers often dubbed in English which gave rise to horror auteurs like Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Sergio Martino, Emilio Miraglia, Mario Bava, and a host of others.
Incredibly silly but with enough moments of bloody gore to appeal to audiences who might have no idea exactly what Brooks and Kennedy are aping, the film is filled with charmingly deliberate jabs at unintentionally ridiculous flourishes from a bygone era. While its own narrative is so over-the-top it’s almost not even worth recounting, the film is fun,...

Recent films like Berberian Sound Studio and The Strange Color Of Your Body's Tears have paid homage to giallo and the '70s Italian horror genre, in a way creating a modern resurgence. Now the Canadian collective known as Astron-6 have thrown their hat in the ring with a satiric approach. Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy lovingly pay tribute to the genre and cleverly poke fun at everything from Suspiria and The Beyond to the more obscure films from that era. There's great attention to detail in everything from the production design and lighting, to the overdubbed dialogue and eerie synth score, and they even got Claudio Simonetti from Goblin to contribute to the main theme.
Adam Brooks instills great comedic sensibility into his character, Rey Ciso. Once the greatest editor in the world until horrific circumstances left him with wooden fingers on his right hand, Rey now finds himself cutting sleazy bottom-of-the-barrel slasher pictures.

Yep, Tom Six (I Love Dries) has finally unleashed The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence upon the world. When I watched parts 1 & 2 upon initial release, I was rather underwhelmed, but upon revisiting the films prior to the third and final chapter in the trilogy, I found myself enjoying the films for what they are. I won’t go in to detail because if you’re reading this review, you have already seen them. Needless to say, the films were brutal with an original concept that made Dieter Laser (John Gleuckstadt) amd Laurence R. Harvey (The Editor) household names and horror icons.

Here are two films from the Chicago International Film Festival that couldn’t be more different.
First up I was Miss Julie, based on the play of the same title by August Strindber, directed by Liv Ullmann and stars Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, and a pug. The general plot is simple, but the drama and themes, are rich and complex as it focuses on a single night where the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat seduces on of her servants. I’m not just saying this because of Ullmann’s legendary collaborations, but the film really does feel like a modern Ingmar Bergman film, particularly Through a Glass Darkly and Cries and Whispers. It is a highly emotional film about the dichotomy between sex and love and the pressures of class based societies. It is also an excellent actor’s showcase, with three powerful performances.
