The Flash made his comic book debut in January 1940 in Flash Comics #1. The original was a research scientist named Jay Garrick who gained his abilities by breathing in radioactive vapors. The second person, Barry Allen was introduced in October 1956 in Showcase #4. He gained his powers from a lightning strike as the show details.

Whenever Barry uses his super speed from a standing start, there is a gust of wind that blows in the opposite direction (for instance, if he superspeeds to the left, there is an airburst that blows to the right). Engaging his super speed in this manner would cause a suction effect creating an airburst in the same direction he's moving in.
