  • Initially when I sat down to watch this 2014 DC animated movie titled "Son of Batman" here in 2020, I was thinking that it was just going to be another run-of-the-mill animated "Batman" movie that come a dime a dozen. But still, I hadn't already seen it, so of course I ended up sitting down to watch it.

And color me impressed. This DC animated movie is actually among some of the best of their animated movies set in the "Batman" universe. Sure, it was a bit cliché with the son and the title and all, but believe you me, the storyline was actually rather good and entertaining.

"Son of Batman" also make use of a good art style that is very reminiscent of the 1980s cartoons, such as "G.I. Joe" for example, so that was definitely something that appealed to me, as I grew up watching the 1980s cartoons. And the animation was very smooth and natural, making the animated movie look rather good.

With this being an animated movie, having a proper voice cast is very crucial to the success of the movie. And that they did have. I was impressed to hear the voices of talents such as Morena Baccarin and Giancarlo Esposito in this animated movie.

All in all, "Son of Batman" is quite worth taking the time to sit down and watch. I am rating it a seven out of ten stars.
  • Son of Batman was an enjoyable film filled with amazing action scenes. However, this movie falls into the trap of so many other animated movies with characters who are seemingly invincible and immune to enemy attacks. In addition, the storyline was weak and simplistic without a lot of depth as it was clichéd and unoriginal. With that being said, if you are looking for a fun movie to watch that isn't too heavy or complex, this is the movie for you.
  • Son of Batman is a weak movie because of one simple problem which makes you lose interest in what happens. The writing of the characters is lacking and makes them either one-dimensional or annoying.

Most actors acted their charaters fine like Jason O'Mara as Batman and Sean Maher as Nightwing and I got a chuckle or two from David McCallum's Alfred. The animation was also well done in the usual dark and atmospheric fashion along with some exciting incidental music.

But the biggest pain is Damian Wayne, and that's just sad, because we're supposed to care for him and his harsh upbringing, but he's just such an arrogant and impulsive jerk towards everyone. At best the movie is incosistent and it gets a little better by the second half. If you decide to watch Son of Batman, don't get your expectations too high. Not as obnoxious as Justice League: War, but still not strong enough to be more than okay.
  • ... could have done.

The execution, the voice acting is indeed below par in places. This is true.

But I confess the story got to me. Usually any production that starts with the words "SON OF" is doomed. Literally.

But the story hooked me so I tolerated the subpar production values and actually had a fairly good time.

More than once I even wondered if somewhere out there was a producer who would find the cash to do this live action but given the audience expectations for a live action BATMAN, especially after Dark Knight, I guess that REALLY WOULD BE A FANTASY.
  • Probably "Son of Batman" isn't the best nor the most memorable animated flick of Batman, but that doesn't mean that it isn't important, you know? Because it's a story definitely worth to make a film adaptation, I mean...when I first knew about the existence of this movie, I tough to myself: "Wait! Batman has a son? WTF??? I have to check this out!"

I haven't read the graphic novel this movie is based on (Batman and Son), but something tells me that almost all the hate towards this film is because it's not truly faithful to it. But, as I haven't read it, it's something irrelevant for me.

But this doesn't mean that the movie has no fails. For example, a huge part of the movie is full of bloody battles, the cold attitude that Talia has even tough her father Ra's had just died (Batman fans will agree with me about the fact that Talia is truly faithful to her father and that if something happens to him, she wouldn't just throw it away).

In spite of its fails, it is a highly underrated and worth to watch, because it portrays in a very decent way the paternal side of Batman that we have never seen before.
  • This was a terrible addition to the Batman movies series. I was not very impressed, I felt this movie was rushed. Unrealistic in various aspects, not how the typical Batman movies are suppose to be.

Part of why Batman is so popular is because viewers enjoy watching a man using his intellect and natural resources to solve crimes and ultimately capture the villains.

The almighty "trailer" makes any movie look hype and all the rave. Which it did justice for this movie, but 30minutes into the movie I could already tell I was in for disappointments.

"Damion" was way overpowered, being able to take on the world's top assassin within the DC universe? That's absurd! Slade or Death-stroke is an entity to be feared and not to be so easily defeated by Damion who has not even reached his prime yet.

Also the character Batman was ineffectively orchestrated, he did not have the mysterious, lone-wolf, and independent personality which stays true to the Comics and previous movies or series and original concept character for that matter.

Overall the movie was lacking and I think a fair appraisal is, 5-5.5 out of 10. This move will keep you entertained, but not worth a second watch.

    Solid
    Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, I've never liked story-arcs with Ra's Al-Ghul and everything involved much. To me it just doesn't seem that much fitting for the dark knight and, quite frankly, I think he is kind of a boring villain so the idea of Batman and Talia having a son never was appealing to me. Having watched "Son of Batman" I can say it is more about having another Robin, rather than about the son-aspect.

The movie starts off strong with an action-packed scene where it reveals its villain - Deathstroke. Now Deathstroke I find to be an interesting one, but unfortunately the way he is portrayed here is disappointing to say the least. His background was completely changed - that's something I am really open-minded about; but why they had to take any badass-factor out of him is beyond me. Seriously, he is the one who gets abused the most on-screen, by a preteen no less.

Poor villain aside, "Son of Batman" isn't actually all that bad. A good portion of why is thanks to the pacing. The movie, for its run-time, tells just about the right amount of story for each character with the right amount of action. It doesn't waste much time. Batman isn't as much present, but that's forgivable since it's more about Damian himself. Naturally the downside of that is that there isn't nearly enough father-son relation, but as already mentioned: it's more of a Robin tale. Damian, while at first seemed could be annoying, comes off as a solid addition, nothing special and probably the Robin I like the least, but still good enough. The only thing I found unnecessary in the story was the inclusion of the man-bats. That felt out of place and didn't add anything to it. They could've just mentioned them - it wouldn't change much, but it's a minor part anyway.

The action is well done. It consist mostly of stylish katana-sword fights and ninja-acrobatics and is fun to watch. There are some scenes that go over the top, mostly the constant deflecting of bullets with a blade while being completely surrounded, the main protagonists being too invincible and even injuries don't influence their fight in the slightest, but if you can look past that, there is fun to be had. It's quite brutal too, surprisingly so considering the rating.

About the voice-acting... well, it's a mixed bag. Main problems being Batman and Deathstroke. Batman sounds as if he doesn't care and just goes with everything, kinda lush. There is a fine line between sounding unemotional and sounding uninvolved and Jason O'Mara missed the mark here. Part to blame is also the writing, which is very cheesy at certain times. While the Deathstroke voice-actor does a fairly competent job himself, his voice just doesn't fit right. He has that kind of a deep, warm-voice, which made me think he's a good guy deep inside. He does sound manly, just not evil enough. Damian, Talia, Nightwing and the others, while not perfect, were good.

Overall a satisfying DC animated movie. Definitively better than the disappointing JL:War as it has more of a story, but not as good as "Under The Red Hood" with which it shares some similarities. A solid entry, nothing more, nothing less.

Historically I'm a big fan of the DC animated series' and movies. There has been a trend in their movies lately that I haven't liked. This was one of my least favorite DC movies. It's not horrible, but it's incredibly sub-par for a number of reasons: 1) Damien is WAY to tough for any 10-year old kid, no matter how well trained. Plus he was just arrogant and annoying.

    2) Deathstroke was pathetic in this! First, his voice actor. The guy from Dharma and Greg...seriously?? It was laughable. He was trying to sound all tough and menacing but failed badly. He is supposed to be one of Batman's deadliest enemies, and in fact Batman doesn't often beat him unless he gets lucky or outsmarts him. But in this movie, he's barely a match for a 10 year old kid. Plus, Batman beats him down one time, without even breaking a sweat. Like I said, pathetic.

    3) There wasn't any of the classic dialogue we've all come to expect from the DC movies. It was all pretty forgettable.

I won't probably ever re-watch this and I hope they shake things up a bit in the future and stop trying to be so edgy and hard-core. Go back to the way these movies used to be.

Son of Batman is a loose adaptation of Grant Morrison's and Andy Kubert's Batman story arc titled Batman and Son. In which we see as Batman is introduced to his son by Talia Al Ghul ,the daughter of Ra's Al Ghul ,who after an attack of Deathstroke Talia is forced to send Damian (that's who she named him) to Batman. Is the movie good, well yes it is a solid Bat's story with good action, an interesting story and mostly nice characters.

Does it have issues? Yes and I will start with them.

Firstly and more important the portrait of Deathstroke, it is totally inaccurate ,for he is shown willing to kill Damian and been a second in command of Ra's and he cheats in order to kill him. This is wrong on so many levels that I can't right it all down. But to keep it simple Slade was a U.S marine who joined a super-soldier program, became a mercenary and has a strict code of honor. Which means that he would never hurt intentionally children and cheat a fight!

The second issue for me is that the Man-Bat army though an interesting idea to weaponize them ,they are treated as a generic swarm of enemies and not as super assassins. That would be much better and so the full potential of the experiments of Dr. Langstrom!

Never the less the rest are good enough in order to make me not bother to much for those problems.

To start the animation fits perfectly with the brutal fight scenes and the tone of the movie. Now I personally don't like the anime style in DC animated movies but her is done well so I will give it a pass.

Next the story is really good for we see Bruce dealing with the problems of parenthood and I was quit entertain by that as well as the fact he is one of the persons of the world who can understand what it means to have a tough childhood. As he said to Damian"I may had traumas but I had friends and family to keep me down and well, as far as I understand you only had trainers". Truth be told Damian never knew anything else than training so Bat's quote is to the point.

Lastly and that is my personal opinion the voice acting died a fantastic work bringing these iconic characters to life and their portrayal was done ,apart from Deathstroke, in a respective manner to the source material.

All in all here we have a fine DC animated film and if you want go watch it. It has my approval.

Well it seems Batman got drugged one night and did the nasty with Talia al Ghul who had a son Damian. Damian is a fighter and intellect like Batman. Damian wants to avenge the death of his grandfather Ra's al Ghul who was killed by Death Stroke. Damian has un-tempered anger which Batman attempts to control. Meanwhile Death Stroke has a scientist making mutants for him.

The film utilizes the dry humor of Alfred and some dark humor. Modern automatic weapons seem to have a tough time against medieval swords. It makes me wonder how Hitler conquered Poland. Fun popcorn toon.

Marvel dominates the live action stuff but, until DC catches up, they have the animated film department mastered…until they released "Son of Batman." I'm not one to complain about the changes made from adapting a book, graphic novel or comic (and this one had A LOT of changes), instead, the problem that hurt my enjoyment of this one had to due with the fact the story was just really weak and the dialogue was absolutely terrible.

While the film follows the predictable lines of a man finding out he has a son and has to somehow connect with them despite the fact they have been alienated from each other for a significant amount of time, the movie fails to hit that requirement of the two finding common ground and they learn, laugh, love and grow together. Yes, "Son of Batman" ends with Batman and his son Damian being a good team and Damian even becomes Robin, the problem is that we don't really see them grow. Damian is a bratty little snob of a child up until he gets the exact thing he wants and is the one thing Batman keeps trying to teach him not to cling to and then *BAM* they are all good and their common ground is found and are now the best of besties. It was a very weak attempt at family drama and matters aren't helped by the fact the film has terrible dialogue to back it up.

Some will write off these complaints as nothing because the film is "just a cartoon, man," but when you compare this film to the other, numerous quality films that DC has released based on their characters and their iconic stories, this film just feels like a letdown and something that was thrown together too quickly.

What's up, brother? Feel like reading more of my rants, ramblings, geek references, bad jokes, and other movie reviews (like a more in-depth look at "Son of Batman" and other animated Batman movies that, thankfully, don't include his annoying son)? If you do, you can visit my blog at revronmovies.blogspot.com. If you don't and hate me now (because hating people is easy on the internet), I just want you to know that I still think you are a beautiful person and want to make you some chocolate chip cookies.
  • Except Deathstrokes portrayal was WAYYY of but I still loved him here. Was a perfect villain. New 52 is my favorite timeline ever. Best five years of D.C.! Don't get annoyed by robins attitude because it's exactly the way he was in the comics. And as much as I love Jason Omara, his voice acting could use more expression. I don't want him to stop voicing Batman though. One of the best Batman voices ever if you ask me.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the Batman story I really enjoyed. Sure there are some weaknesses then and there, but overall it was a interesting and fun Batman movie. So the plot is about Bruce Wayne getting acquainted with his son Damian Wayne. After Deathstroke attacks his grandfather Ra's al Ghul's fortress and kills his grandfather in the process as well. The most intriguing part about this animated movie is the relationship between Batman and Damian who is this stuck up, arrogant kid fueled by vengeance. But he is also highly talented, skilled and has a genius level intellect with superb fighting skills and reflexes after training with the League of Assassins for years. So yeah, he is one of those people that comes across as a stubborn fool but is also a badass at the same time. And it was cool to watch him work with the Batman in some missions. While Batman shows him the ropes of being a real crime fighter. So the chemistry between the two is cool to watch, but there is nothing really psychological in that aspect. I however didn't like how they portrayed Deathstroke as this pushover, sure he can sometimes cheat to get his ways. But he just didn't seem to put up enough of a fight against Batman. So I liked the animation which is like 70 percent American and 30 percent anime style. Plus the plot I thought was slightly above average. Despite the weak set up and the most implausible DC movie when it comes to practicality.

    7.6/10

A ten year old who can swim 50 miles. A 500 year old who can deflect hundreds of bullets from six assailants using assault rifles simultaneously with an ordinary metal sword... A serum that can turn people into bats because... Well just because. Then another serum that can turn them back instantly.

It was all too silly and cartoonish. This isn't the Batman who would out-think himself out of a tough situation. On several occasions he has to be rescued, which is just not Batman. But they break the realism aspect of the world multiple times and with it, you start caring less and less because it just gets stupid.

There was no fight between Batman and Damian, which was needed to show how their relationship builds and makes their love/hate situation evolve. There was no anger or jealousy from Night-wing. No proud grandfather thoughts from Alfred. Talias father is killed and she doesn't care. No one cared about anyone and so we stopped caring as well. There was no emotional connection between any of the characters even though the plot was screaming out for it. They just all fell flat and dull.

It looked nice, but at only 70 minutes I kept thinking that there was so much more they could have done to build on their relationships.

Its a meh movie. You'll watch it as passable entertainment but forget about it the next minute.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is my first ever review of an animated film, which is kind of strange considering I have seen pretty much every DC and Marvel film released in the past 15 years as well as a lot of Disney and Pixar. Anyway that's neither here nor there, back onto the review.

The film is based on a 2006 story arc written by Grant Morrison who has written for so many characters and arcs isn't surprising his work is being adapted into films.

The film starts off with a huge training camp being destroyed that we know is owned by the Al Ghul family, a young boy and Mother escape to the boys Father, who turns out to be none other than Batman himself. Batman takes his newly revealed son under his wing deciding to train and protect him from what has already happened.

Bruce allows Damien to join him and Robin, in fighting crime, but keeping the criminals alive in typical Batman tradition, throughout this time a huge development happens which will soon have a incredible impact on the plot.

The film has a pretty short run time, which isn't to bad due to the fact we do not really need that much characters time, however I would like to have had seen some more on screen relationship progression between Bruce and Damien. Also they did make Deathstroke a bit less of a badass than his usual-self, I mean he gets a beat down more than once by a teen none the less, however that does add to Damien being a very skilled fighter.

Overall, the film is a very enjoyable watch full of Action, Ninjutsu style acrobatics and katana based fighting resulting in lots of violence and gore which surprised me when watching because I didn't realise the rating. The voice acting overall is pretty good besides Batman, Jason O'Mara seems to just be reading his lines not putting any emotion or passion into them, the rest of the cast is pretty good nothing special. It does have a strange animation about it, it almost feels like an 80s maybe 90s style look to it, I enjoyed it seen a few people complaining about though.
  • DC's shared direct-to-video animated universe enters its second chapter with SON OF BATMAN. Taking inspiration from Grant Morrison's Batman and Son comic story arc, SON OF BATMAN reveals the illegitimate love child of Bruce Wayne and former nemesis Talia, daughter of Ra's Al Ghul, leader of the league of assassins. When the league , is betrayed by its deadliest member, Deathstroke, Talia sends her son Damien to his father in Gotham city. But Batman has much on his hands, fighting crime and handling his company's falling profits, to take care of a 10 year old. A 10 year old who hacked into NORAD when he was 6, was trained in every art of combat, and who has no qualms about bloodshed.

These clashing values and personalities should have made an intriguing study of this father father/son relationship. Here is a man who is suddenly saddled with the responsibilities of fatherhood, of balancing is double life of swinging billionaire/crime fighter with a new life of a parent which he never had. The comics delved into Bruce's lingering insecurities of a man who had his childhood taken from him on tragic night. How is he, who's own younger days were filled with grief and hatred, able to deprogram me this vengeful, angry kid that is his son?

SON OF BATMAN (the film) fails to offer any glimpse into the head of Bruce Wayne. Character study is overshadowed by wanting to move the whole ninja/assassin hostile takeover story forward. As such, we get the character development taking a backseat to the action. We do get some nice chemistry in the few scenes between Damien and Alfred, as well as budding rivalry with Nightwing. But between Batman and his son? Disappointingly flat.

Thankfully, their voice actors do their best to bring out their characters' personalities. Jason O'Mara's Batman is a nice blend between Christian Bale, without being too raspy, and a young Michael Keaton. Those who prefer Kevin Conroy's deep Batman voice would no take some time to get used to this new portrayal. Stuart Allen as Damien is the star of this show, bringing a level of professionalism to the role despite his young age. On the other hand, our villains, Ra's Al Ghul and Deathstroke, are horrible. Deathstroke especially sounds like acting in a bad school play.

Visually, SON OF BATMAN boasts artwork very reminiscent of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not surprising since the director Ethan Spulding directed a good number of Avatar episodes. Here, he truly revels in the new PG13 rating of this film, bringing the violence to whole new levels bordering on absurdity. Characters are literally roasted, get their eyes gouged out, impaled, and blasted to bloody bits

The character designs maintain that Japanese anime look consistent with the previous JUSTICE LEAGUE: WAR feature. Level of detail is strong with deep shadows, metallic sheen and creases. TheAnswerStudio brings their "A" game to the animation production, giving generally smooth animation and character movements while maintaining the level of art detail. The only shortcoming is in crowd scenes such as the massive ninja battle that opens this movie. Animation short cuts are very obvious here.

All in all, SON OF BATMAN works better as a set up for bigger stories. Assuming BATMAN UNDER THE RED HOOD is still canon, and with Warner Premiere turning to DC's New 52 for animated adaptations, we could be seeing a whole slew of Bat-family titles on the horizon. An animated "Batman: The Court of Owls" would be epic and "Batman: Death of the Family" would serve as a powerful conclusion. An adaptation of Grant Morrison's final Batman inc chapters would be an emotionally powerful epilogue bringing the entire Damien Wayne saga to a close.

    One can only hope.
  • I feel the first thing I should mention in my user comments for this movie is that I am not a big fan of Batman - I haven't read the comics in years, and I only have a basic knowledge of the character of Batman and the other characters in the series. So I thought I might not understand what would go on in this movie. As it turned out, my basic knowledge was enough to make me understand everything that went on in this particular story. But while I found the story coherent, to some degree I was disappointed with it. The main problem I had was the whole father/son angle. It's hardly touched on at all. You would think that both father and son finding out all of a sudden that the other existed would lead to some interesting drama and character development, but that simply doesn't happen at all. The script seems more concerned with action than anything else. Now, some of the action is fairly well done, with some surprisingly violent moments that got my attention. (There is additional adult material that makes the movie probably unsuitable for younger children.) As for the animation, it is a little stiff and jerky at times, but it's well designed and catches your eye. In the end, the movie is kind of mediocre, best suited when you are in a really undemanding mood.
  • Warning: Spoilers
It's an enjoyable movie, it leans more towards Damian's story hence why it's titled "son of batman". Most batman fans would be disappointed that Damian is able to defeat Slade, nightwing and batman (even if bruce was going easy on him) as they all have more than a decade more of experience than him. Even the fight with ubu was pretty jarring plus how he is able to do all sorts of other rather ridiculous feats.
  • Son of Batman is certainly less epic than the preceding two Justice League animated movies, but it does a fine job of introducing Damien Wayne as the new Robin. There is nothing special here and the stakes are somewhat low, but it is still a solid 80 minutes of entertainment.
  • Milk_Tray_Guy24 September 2021
Really nice looking animation. Good performances by most of the voice actors, but it's let down by Thomas Gibson's embarrassingly bad turn as Deathstroke (thankfully, when the character returned for Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, he was voiced by the late, great Miguel Ferrer). 6.5/10.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The DC Universe continues combining its New 52 Universe and its animated movie universe with "Son of Batman." It was a lot easier to adapt "Justice League: War" for the big or small screen given that it was already rooted in the rebooted world we've come to know in the past few years. The real question everybody wanted to know the answer to was, "How will a book written before the launch of the New 52 fit into the new cosmos?" Whether you like the outcome or not, credit has to be given to DC for accomplishing the feat.

When Ra's al Ghul is assassinated by Deathstroke and his army, his daughter Talia and her son Damian are left on the run for their lives. She takes the boy to the only place she knows he'll be safe: Gotham City and into the custody of the only man she can truly trust - The Batman. The Caped Crusader is caught off guard when he finds out he is the father of Damian. The heiress to the throne of the Demon leaves the 11-year-old under the wing of the Dark Knight. Batman soon finds himself partnered with a new Robin when he is put in the middle of a battle between Talia's new brigade of Man-Bats and Deathstroke's squad.

If you've read Grant Morrison's graphic novel that "Son of Batman" is based on, then you know right off the bat (pun intended) this is not as faithful an adaptation as you might have expected. Whether or not you find this to be a good thing or bad is up to you. I personally found it to be entertaining and quite a brilliant way to pull the saga of "Batman and Son" into the New 52 world.

"Batman and Son" is rated PG-13 for Stylized violence including bloody images, and some suggestive material. There's more gore than usual as members of the League of Assassins and Deathstroke's army get stabbed and shot. Several lines of dialogue are rather racy, but most pre-teens probably won't get them. I still don't really know why they needed to be included. Why not just leave them out and know that the movie is safe for everyone without question? Some will see DC's use of Deathstroke to be a desperate ploy to promote and push the character further into the spotlight while cross-promoting his presence on "Arrow." Hey, business is business. DC executives and writers gotta eat, too. I like the character on the television show and I like him in the comics. If you don't like him, then you're probably going to have a problem with his inclusion in "Son of Batman." "Son of Batman" is made up of the first quarter of Morrison's book sans all the romantic elements and other extraneous elements which could be trimmed out. A little shuffling is done to certain plot elements and events, Deathstroke is thrown in, and "Voila!" We get an energetic and fast-paced 74-minute movie.
  • Warning: Spoilers
First, I must give credit to the animation, fight scenes, and the animators. It looks great. Batman and Nightwing's voice actors do a great job.

I enjoy the concept of Batman having a son and what their dynamic could be. I like Damien despite other fans' view of him. His arrogance and entitled behavior is understandable. No affection or love was given to him, just expectations and praise when he fought well from his mother and grandfather.

My first big issue is the lack of depth or emotion in this film. There could have been more care or happiness or statements of such from Batman learning that he had a son. Good can be born from bad things happening. Raven is an example of this. Sure Batman is going to treat Damien the same as Dick and other Robins he fathered, but learning he had an actual son should warrant a bit of reaction. Their relationship could be something important to show. This boy needs some kind of warmth even if it's small. A child that basically has had no care mentally or emotionally needs something. The movie really likes stating things in dialogue rather than showing it. The audience can see that the kid is cold, show us something from the other characters rather than have them joke about him not being a human.

A minor issue is the bad voice acting for Deathstroke. The general dialogue in this movie is weak.

But the BIGGEST issue in the film is the fact that they ignore that Batman was r*ped. Talia Al Ghul is a bad person. She was gaslighting Batman by telling him that he enjoyed it despite her slipping him dr*gs. Can a woman ever be in the wrong in these movies? It's so wrong to treat a horrible thing like it's nothing. Making it seem fine by saying that he enjoyed it is evil of the writers. Men can be the victims in sexual assault too. Maybe it doesn't fit their narratives that men can be victims. And this isn't the only instance of DC writers glossing over men getting r*ped. They did this also in the Batman and Harlequin movie.

The issue isn't necessarily that it happened in the story, the issue is that they treat it like it isn't a horrible, traumatic crime.

These writers need to be fired.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The movie is a good one, that I enjoy though I wouldn't watch it more then 3 times. It's plot is good and I love the design of the characters and all together, it's a more or less GOOD movie and I think if your reading this you should go and watch it immediately. Though in some places it's quite cartoony and unrealistic, like how can a 10 YEAR OLD swim like half way across the the fricking sea. How did Robin mange to get even a hit on legendary Dick Grayson aka Nightwing, he would of kicked his a** , never mind what he managed to do to him he looked like he was at death door with all those slashes. Apart from what stated above it was a pretty good movie that I liked to watch.
  • While the animation and action are pretty sweet, it deviates drastically from the source material and in doing so made Damien far less interesting.
  • Warning: Spoilers
All right, so a bit of background first. I'm not a hardcore Batman fan or anything, meaning that I haven't read the comics and so I don't know everything about the universe and how well this movie adheres to its source material. I've seen Under the Red Hood, Mask of Phantasm, Year One, Dark Knight Returns and obviously Nolan's new trilogy and I enjoyed The Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games immensely. I thought all of those movies were great - Dark, gritty, intense and serious. Not so with this film.

First of all, the voice acting is terrible overall and the cringe worthy dialogue didn't help either. It tries to be humorous while failing at it badly. From the voice actors I'd highlight Thomas Gibson as Deathstroke, he didn't portray any emotion or intensity at all. None of the other voice actors didn't even rise to average. That's really a show stopper when it comes to animated films because so much of the emotion is conveyed through voice. I'm not sure how they recorded the lines but it felt like there was little to no interaction between the actors, it just sounded like they were delivering their lines independently.

I'm not really sold on the animation and graphical style either, Bruce Wayne especially looked really wrong to my eyes at least. Talia al Ghul had her boobs on display quite...prominently. A big problem with this movie was with the physics and how they tried to bring completely different elements together here. The kid Damian is supposedly fighting almost equally with Nightwing and he's also kicking a 200 kg muscle monster through windows and parries his attacks with ease. Then he just goes ahead and casually goes for a 50 mile swim, just like that. I mean, come on. That's completely over the top ridiculous. There's always some suspension of disbelief you have to give these movies but this was just too far. There could be a way to have Damian fight these different larger and stronger guys with speed and stealth while making it at least plausible but they didn't go for that approach.

Then there's an arrow minigun and some catapults dropping helicopters like they're flies and Ra's al Ghul using a katana like a lightsaber to deflect assault rifle bullets from soldiers who are surrounding him. It all seemed so preposterous and set this nonsensical tone for the entire movie. You don't feel any tension or suspense when they try to bring up anything serious. The tone is all over the place. Damian hacking into NORAD at age six? Daffy Duck on TV? People being impaled to a wall from their hands? My brain can't handle this, this movie just differed so radically from all of the Batman related stuff I'd seen before. No surprise that this is the director's first crack at the Batman franchise. I just didn't find anything interesting or evocative in this film.
