Perhaps sensing the film’s award credentials, Focus Features has uprooted Juan Antonino Bayona’s A Monster Calls from its original October release date and thrust the fantasy flick directly into Oscar territory.
Now on course to debut via select theaters on December 23 before expanding nationwide on January 6, the studio’s switcheroo can also be seen as a means of safeguarding Bayona’s hotly-anticipated adaptation from the competition. Originally slated to arrive on October 21, A Monster Calls was being readied to square off against the Tom Cruise-fronted sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Keeping Up with the Joneses, Boo! A Madea Halloween and Ouija: Origin of Evil. For the sake of comparison, it’s now due to open against Amityville: The Awakening and horror sequel/franchise revival Underworld: Blood Wars on January 6.

April 9th will mark the four year anniversary of director Sidney Lumet's passing, at age 86. Lumet was the first director I interviewed whose one-sheet posters hung on my wall as a kid. He was an idol, an icon, and an inspiration. I wasn't yet 30 in April 1997, when I met him at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for our interview at the press junket for "Night Falls On Manhattan," one of his solid, authentic urban dramas that blended crime, politics and personal revelations that became his signature.
Lumet immediately put any butterflies I had at ease. Diminutive, but with the infectious energy of a teenager, his was a disarming presence. He paid me a compliment on my sportcoat, saying that I looked a bit like the young Mickey Rourke (which I still don't see, but what the hell), then went on to regale me for an hour with...

Gal Gadot has responded to critics who say that she is "too skinny" to play Wonder Woman.
The actress will feature as the superhero in the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but has received a backlash from some over her apparent suitability for the role.
Speaking to Robot Underdog, Gadot explained: "They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small... They said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick."
Despite receiving censure from some fans, Gadot revealed that she is not disheartened or put off as a result.
"I can take anything. It's just empty talk," the actress added. "I can understand that part of what I'm doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire."

Before donning the superhero guise for her title role as Diana Prince in Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman adaptation, Fast and Furious starlet Gal Gadot may appear alongside Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher and Jon Hamm in the Greg Mottola-directed comedy, Keeping Up With the Joneses, according to a report published by Deadline.
Should Gadot board the project, it would mean that the actress’ schedule for the rest of the year would be packed full, as Warner Bros. confirmed over the weekend that production on Michelle MacLaren’s superhero flick would get underway in the fall of this year. The filmmaker will helm a script provided by Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift, Pan).
As for Keeping Up With the Joneses, Mottola’s film will orbit around a couple who soon discover that their next door neighbours are not what they appear. We assume that Galifianakis and Fisher will play one of the loved-up pairing,...

Superbad/Paul director Greg Mottola has been busy putting together the pieces for his latest comedy, Keeping Up With The Joneses, since at least last March. With Jon Hamm, Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher all aboard, he wants to add Gal Gadot to the list.Mottola's film, written by Michael LeSieur, finds a settled yet bored couple discovering that their new suburban neighbours might be more than they appear on first glimpse. Could they be criminals? Or spies? Or both? Or neither? Or something else entirely? Are we trapped asking questions at this point? Possibly? Not much is known about the roles the various actors will play yet, though we’re guessing at Galifianakis and Fisher as the first couple, with Hamm and Gadot as the second. That, of course, assumes that Gadot’s talks work out – she’s got a busy schedule with her Wonder Woman duties and other films,...

In their report on Gal Gadot joining the cast of Greg Mottola's Keeping Up With The Joneses as Diana Jones, Deadline offer an update on the Fast Furious actress' upcoming role as a certain other Diana. Last we heard, director Michelle MacLaren (Game Of Thrones, The Walking Dead) actually didn't officially have a green light from Warner Bros. to shoot the solo Wonder Woman flick and was still working out the script with Pan screenwriter Jason Fuchs. Well, evidently that's changed, as the site reports that cameras are set to roll on the movie this Fall with a June 2017 release date in mind. Zack Snyder recently shared our first look at Aquaman from Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, so perhaps another official image of Gal Gadot as Princess Diana is not far away.

Jack O'Connell is breaking out something fierce this year. He's of course starring in Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" and on the indie scene in "Starred Up," for which he was nominated last year at the British Independent Film Awards. Well, he's back for more of this this time around with "'71," Yann Demange's brilliant Belfast thriller, which scored the lion's share of nominations today with nine. Matthew Warchus' ensemble dramedy "Pride," about gay activists working to help miners during the 1984 UK mineworkers strike, was a few steps behind with seven mentions. Mike Leigh's "Mr. Turner" rounded up five nods, while "Calvary" and "The Imitation Game" picked up four apiece. The international category was mostly populated with American entries: "The Babadook," "Blue Ruin," "Boyhood" and "Fruitvale Station." Though Poland's "Ida" also made a show. Check out the full list of nominees below. The 17th annual British Independent Film...

The last time I attended Aesthetica, I was a volunteer and didn’t get to see all that many films. The only complete screening I managed to view was at the venue I was manning; unfortunately, that screening was full of pretentious and acutely inaccessible experimental films, so I didn’t have all that great a time with them. Thankfully I managed to catch a handful of others and enjoyed the atmosphere of having a pop-up film festival in (my then adopted city) York so much that it washed the wankery right out of my mouth. Wait, that doesn’t sound–
Anyway, I’m back – and purely as an audience member this time. My first day at Asff was a great taster of many different kinds of films, though of course with an event of this size (showing over 300 films over three and a half days) I was always going...

The edge-of-your seat thriller that was all the talk at this year’s Berlin Film Festival (that momentum was carried over into Telluride and Tiff during the fall) leads all noms for the 17th edition of the 2014 British Independent Film Awards. Landing nine nominations in all, Yann Demange’s ’71 might lead the pack, but I’d argue that despite all the fanfare, remains an underdog in most categories. Going up against The Imitation Game (which failed to score Morten Tyldum a Best Director nod but managed to get Best Screenplay and Best Film consideration) and Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner, there might be plenty of gift-giving for several films on December 7th, with Matthew Warchus’ Pride also in the mix with a whopping seven noms (mostly in the acting categories). The much deserving Cannes played Catch Me Daddy and Venice Film Fest included The Goob thankfully didn’t go unnoticed,...

The British Independent Film Awards announced its nominees this Monday morning and it was good news for films that may not have the muscle to break into the Academy Awards contest. The Irish political thriller “’71” and “Pride,” the story of gay activism and mineworker strikes that fits snuggly the time-honored British sociopolitical dramedy genre, earned the most nominations. In honors that will likely replicate themselves stateside, “Imitation Game” also earned a Best British Independent Film nod, with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley finding love in the Best Actor and Actress categories, respectively. Other Best British Independent Film nominees include Mike Leigh’s “Mr. Turner” and John Michael McDonagh’s “Calvary.” Picking up multiple nominations were Lenny Abrahamson’s “Frank,” documentarian Morgan Matthews’ narrative debut “X+Y,” and the Nick Cave documentary “20,000 Days on Earth.” There’s little conformity to the British Independent Film Awards. Compared to previous years, the 2014 nominations are downright populist.

Yann Demange’s anti-war parable ’71 has scored a leading nine nominations for the 17th Moët British Independent Film Awards. The director’s debut feature, which premiered in Berlin last February, is named in the major categories and also scooped a Best Actor mention for Jack O’Connell who’s next up in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. Directors’ Fortnight closer and crowd-pleaser Pride, helmed by Matthew Warchus, was next with seven nominations while festival favorites Daniel Wolfe’s Catch Me Daddy, Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank and Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner each scored five nods. Along with ’71, Pride and Mr Turner, the titles competing in the Best British Independent Film race are John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary and Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game. Oscar hopeful, The Imitation Game’s Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley also scored acting noms. (See full list of nominees below.)

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has announced the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" led the pack with 11 nominations including Best Film, British Film (who knew "Gravity" was a British movie?), Director for Cuaron, Screenplay for Cuaron and his son Jonas, and Actress for Sandra Bullock.
The biggest snub in my humble opinion was "Dallas Buyers Club" which appeared nowhere on the nominations list. Apparently, the British Academy did not deem Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto award-worthy!
The BAFTA Awards will take place on Feb. 16 at the Royal Opera house in London. Will "Gravity" emerge as the victorious movie that night? And by the way, "Gravity" was my No. 1 favorite film of 2013!

Early this morning saw the announcement of the nominations for the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards for 2013. For the most part, they look like all of the other guild nominations we’ve seen over the past month or so (including all five director nominees who were just nominated for the DGA’s top award), but there are a few interesting differences to take note of.
First off, Philomena has a much stronger presence here, but given that it is a British film, it’s hardly surprising. You may also notice a lot of love for Behind the Candelabra, a film that was only shown on TV in the States, making it ineligible for theatrical awards.
However, aside from that, just about all the major players are here. Gravity leads the pack with 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Actress. 12 Years a...

Not surprisingly, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock's “Gravity” is at the front of the pack with a whopping 11 nods including Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Director, and Best Original Music.
Following close behind, “American Hustle” and “12 Years A Slave” each have 10 chances at glory, and “Captain Phillips” will compete in nine categories.
Meanwhile, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon's flamboyant flick “Behind the Candelabra” is tied with Tom Hanks’ “Saving Mr. Banks,” each receiving five mentions.
And of course, everyone has been talking about the previously announced hopefuls for the fan-voted Ee Rising Star Award- Dane DeHaan, George McKay, Will Poulter, Lea Seydoux, and Lupita Nyong’o.

The nominations for this year's BAFTA film awards have been announced. And we've got them all for you right here...
In a live broadcast streamed this morning, the British Academy announced its nominees for this year's BAFTAs. We didn't have the time or the money to get hold of a tuxedo in time for the event, but we did manage to put on an extremely posh dressing gown.
The winners of the coveted metal BAFTA face will be announced next month, but for now, take a look at the list of nominees below, and see how your favourite films, actors and filmmakers of last year tallies with the Academy's. There are few genuine surprises among the choices, but we're guessing that Frozen's a shoo-in for best animation.
