We've finally come to the end of 2017, which means: lots of under-the-wire Oscar hopefuls! The return of the Bellas! A brand spankin' new Star Wars! Along with the final push of awards contenders (Steven Spielberg! Paul Thomas Anderson! Guillermo del Toro!), viewers can look forward to a pair of biopics about ethically compromised women, two vastly different musicals and the Rock taking on motorcycle-riding warriors and a safari's worth of jungle creatures. Oh, and James Franco giving what may arguably be the single greatest performance of the year. Yes, you read that sentence correctly.

Brace yourself: upside down Christmas trees are the newest holiday trend.
The new take on a classic Christmas decoration recently went viral on Twitter, but people aren’t quite sure how to feel about them yet.
“I have a lot of questions,” wrote one Twitter user. “Why is Target selling an upside down Christmas tree? Why is it nearly $100? Is this a Stranger Things joke that I’m missing? Someone help.”
While another wrote, “What’s better than a Christmas tree? An upside down Christmas tree of course #whytho.”

Brace yourself: You’re going to want to binge “Alias Grace.” The six-episode limited series — streaming now on Netflix following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and subsequent broadcasting in Canada on the CBC — is downright hypnotic, rapturous, and engrossing.
Watching evokes the sense of sinking into a great novel, which seems only fitting, given that it’s based on the 1996 book by Margaret Atwood, one of our greatest living novelists. But everything in the execution is owed to the detail-rich writing of Sarah Polley and direction of Mary Harron, who take this real-life tale of murder and give it rich depths, digging into the harm done to a human soul by a lifetime of oppression.
At the center of “Grace” is Grace Marks (played by Sarah Gadon in a star-making turn), a 19th-century Irish immigrant convicted of a notorious double murder, whose mental state comes...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Well, yes and no. If the imitation is pretty much cut and paste, then it’s a little bit obvious and borderline theft. In the comic book world especially, we’ve seen more than a few characters that are undoubtedly copycats.
It could be in their look or personality, but there’s no escaping the fact that you can smell the influence from a mile away. Whether it’s right or wrong, though, we’ll leave that up to you to decide.
Many of these heroes and villains have gone on to have their own successful runs – some have even become more popular than the characters they’re based off. Thus, we’ve decided to identify a few of the big ones that are “inspired” by others. As always, we welcome your thoughts on the topic, so don’t be shy to...

Steve Carell is known for his classic dad roles (Crazy, Stupid, Love, anyone?), but over the past few years, he's become much more of a daddy in our eyes. The new trailer gives us another impressive look at the visual wonderment of CGI in creating a world under threat by natural forces that can’t and shouldn’t be controlled by manmade machines and Gerard Butler’s race against time, yet again, to save the world from impending danger.
It’s funny how life sometimes imitates art, anyone would think Donald Trump may have gotten hold of the script for Geostorm in which satellites are built to control global climate change and took it quite literally, tweaked it a little for his own mind to digest when he boldly stated climate change wasn’t caused by humans.

Last Week’S Review: Rough Times for Jimmy Are Bad News For Everyone Else

It’s what we’ve been dreading: The return of Slippin’ Jimmy. We get a flashback to Cicero, Illinois, as Jimmy and his old pal, the now sadly deceased Marco, break into the old McGill family general store in search of the perfect coin for their latest con. It’s just enough of a reminder of Jimmy’s old self to sell what happens in the present, as Jimmy deals with some weaselly commercial clients first by trying to reason with them, then borrowing a move from his old playbook, staging an accident in the guitar shop.
Of course, Jimmy’s not a young man anymore, and the fall injures him pretty badly, to the point where it becomes worth his time and energy to help a fellow community service colleague duck out of the job,...

Bullets were flying, and Harlee was yelling “Officer down!” into her phone at the start of Shades of Blue Season 2 Episode 9.
We had to wait until the end to figure out who had been shot.
From what little we saw in that opening scene, I could tell that it wasn’t anyone from their team, but I never expected it to be Nate bleeding out on Wozniak’s floor.
Harlee had hoped that confronting Stahl about his dead partner would at least buy her a cease fire for a few days.
Hardly. The attacks are coming from all angles now, and it’s going to be almost impossible for the entire team to dodge a bullet, literal or figurative.
It felt as though we were waiting for the other shoe to drop concerning Loman’s interview with Nate. For a moment it looked like Loman had come to his senses.

So, going into the final stretch before the Oscars are announced, I have a question: if you like—no, love this year’s front-running La La Land, does that make you a bad person, or just deluded? Don’t laugh—there may be people at your own Oscar party who will have already come to their own conclusion on that conundrum. This year’s presumptive favorite is so presumptive that people are talking about the film as if it had already won and are projecting as to whether it’s an enduring classic or just another meh-fest to be thrown on the mediocrity pile along with Crash, Chicago, Argo, The Artist and about half of the rest of Oscar’s Best Picture winners since the Academy started handing out awards at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in 1929. It is hard to deny, no matter how much you like or dislike La La Land,...

Brace yourself for an involuntary face palm — or maybe enlightenment, depending on your basic understanding of the Affordable Care Act, which Republicans and Donald Trump intend to dismantle. Jimmy Kimmel sent his camera crew to Hollywood Blvd. this week to ask Americans if they prefer the Aca or Obamacare. In case you’re beginning to ponder that question yourself, stop right now. They’re both the same thing. And this is the second time Kimmel has carried out the social experiment. The results are just as unflattering for those surveyed as they were the first time. Last time, I covered the best movies of 2016— and now it’s time for the flip side. Brace yourself.
#6: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – In my top list I praised Captain America: Civil War for being a kind of triumphant pinnacle of fan service in comic book movies. Batman v Superman might well be the dark mirror of that idea: fan service run completely amok. Characters are crammed in this movie every which way along with vague concepts, half-formed ideas, and every frame of iconic superhero artwork Zack Snyder has ever seen. Batman v Superman is depressing both in tone and failed potential. The Superman that Snyder puts on the screen is the worst interpretation of the character I’ve ever seen, impulsive and violent without a trace of warmth. Only the moderately badass Wonder Woman sequences save this movie from higher placement on this list, and they...

Warning: This recap will tell you what happens in the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life‘s first episode, “Winter.” If you don’t want to know, click elsewhere.
It seems sacrilegious to say so, but the finest exchange in Gilmore Girls‘ triumphant revival isn’t a bit of supersonic, pop culture-reference-laden, upbeat banter between Lorelai and Rory — at least, not in the first episode, “Winter.”
Yeah, yeah — I know: That thought is as surprising as the existence of a kale salad on the menu at Luke’s. Don’t worry. There are plenty of smart, touching, funny, eminently...

Tonight, America will be riveted by the first U.S. Presidential debate of 2016. In a campaign season that has contained all the absurd drama of reality TV, the 56-year-old television tradition will provide voters the clearest and most sober presentation of the candidates and their views. It has tremendous potential to shape the choices we make November 8.
Hilary Clinton is the more experienced orator, but our perception of Donald Trump as a candidate could be shaped by another television institution in which he was on stage while facing opponents who cast aspersions upon him: The Roast of Donald Trump.
First popularized by Dean Martin in the 1970s, the celebrity roast mocks iconic performers and was initially designed as TV’s way of saying: We love you enough to put you through this. Now an annual Comedy Central tradition, in 2011 its subject was a businessman and reality star who is now...

Brace yourself for another romantic comedy about a woman whose cynical approach to love is deemed unacceptable, and so must change. This time, it will be titled The Competition, and will star Golden Globe nominee Thora Birch (Ghost World), with Harvey Lowry (A Play On Words) in the director’s chair. The possible saving grace for this one is that Birch is also on board as producer, along with Jasmine Fontes, and Kelsey Tucker – who wrote the script.
So, what is the groundbreaking plot of this independent movie? Well, a woman finds blogging success in the promotion of a theory that recommends her female readers should end their relationships after six months, in order to “avoid heartache.” She cannot be allowed to continue pedalling such a chilly social attitude, however, and so an attorney challenges her to a competition designed to disprove her troublesome theory.

I recently got the Arrow Films version of Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion. If you’ve heard of it you know that it was a landmark film amidst an even more legendary series of Asian female prison exploitation flicks. If you haven’t heard of it, think of the Big Bird Cage existing in the extremely surreal world of Asian cinema. It’s even trippier than Italian cinema, and that’s pretty trippy.
The mainstream homogenization of all the J horror remakes has dulled our palette when it comes to the essence of the source material. It’s like eating the sushi off the buffet because it’s predictable (notice I left out safe), when you should really go get the real thing from the real place. Matter of fact, these films are like eating the blowfish dinner that could kill you.

Suicide Squad is not the darkest mainstream superhero comic book movie ever made, nor is it even the darkest live-action film featuring Batman ever made. However, it is gleefully nihilistic, and it takes a different approach to what has become a fairly familiar story form at this point, right at the moment when it feels like superhero movies either have to evolve or die. It is very much a David Ayer film, but he’s playing with some of the biggest icons of the DC universe in a way that no one else has so far in a feature film. It suggests just how much room there is for filmmakers to think outside the box as they bring these characters to life, in part because of the ways it succeeds and because of the ways it fails. The film is set directly after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,...

As a wise woman once said: "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." What holds true in HBO's hit fantasy series also resonates in Washington D.C. politics, of course, where the field of contenders has narrowed from a ridiculous many to a powerful few. And like the drama's many battles for the Iron Throne, election year campaigning can be a real bastard. The possibility of contested tickets mean the Democratic and Republican conventions run the risk of getting nasty,...
