  • ONAYUM AATUKUTTIYUM-My Review

Mysskin hats off for your effort for giving a pure cinema. There are no songs, no comedies, double meaning dialogs, heroine etc., It is just about the story of The Wolf and The Lamb.. It is not just a thriller, an art.. thinking and executing such a story one has to have great talent and of course yes Mysskin can now proudly say this is one of his film. Balaji V Rangha's Cinematography is stunning, the lighting during the dark gives a great effect on the silver screen for this movie.Every frame is unique and brilliant. Ilayaraja's background score is helping us travel behind the Wolf and the Lamb. I loved the flashback of Mysskin where the whole picture comes clearer with the perfect examples of Wolf,Lamb,Bear and Tiger.. His acting gives true life for the character Wolf. And Sri is equally talented his character sketch resembling the Lamb is linked very beautifully. He will reach great heights in future. Small Kid and her blind family every character has some impact for sure. Still there are some thoughts like Why The Wolf goes behind the Lamb? just to say thanks?? And moreover the Bear thats the Villain character linked with this is not appealing. Though some elements used in such films are repeated it is not a hindrance for the Wolf and the lamb. Leaving certain things, this is a pure cinema and those who love cinema will surely admire this style of making

WOLF AND THE LAMB- EVEN PERSONS LIKE THE LAMB WILL SHOWER SYMPATHY FOR THIS WOLF Rating: 3.75/5

I really expect this movie for various award categories like Direction, Story, Music, Acting, Stunt, Screenplay, Cinematography, Costume, Plot, etc... My God this movie is simply brilliant... After a long time had a very good satisfaction watching this movie. Highly recommended awesome movie, extraordinary music score and fabulous acting by all the artists. Shri is very energetic throughout the movie and had performed very well, Mysskin is very good and especially brilliant performance and dialogue delivery by the CBI officer Shaji(Lal), he just suits extremely well for that character. Hats off to Mysskin and Raja Sir for giving out a masterpiece... A must watch
  • Just went to hear the BGM of Illayaraja... but the director overtook it...remarkable direction... to say in simple words "World class"... BGM of IR is the plus.. but even without that the movie speaks .. the development of the movie is such great.. with the constant & sustained tension... awesome camera angles & frames.. enjoyed . No songs, but has melody; no comedian, but has humor! Almost all performed well but i can't neglect mentioning Mysskin.. fabulous performance!! especially a continuous shot of around 3+ min without blinking and maintaining the expression and delivering dialog...enjoyed .. IR music nothing to say... Strings strings strings... the only music director, who i am aware, uses the silence in a very effective way for the music ...lively notes a short story said in a fabulous manner..!! Thoroughly enjoyed . Onaiyum Aatukuttiyum - ஓநாயும் ஆட்டுக்குட்டியும் Highly recommended for GREAT MINDS, A MUST WATCH
  • When you are shown a city that is glowing even during the nights, artists who perform extra ordinarily well, Illayaraja's symphony, a story that is just like a fairy tale, one must say 'Cant ask for better'. This is what Mysskin's Onaayum Aattukuttiyum is all about.

The Story is about a man who is a killer by profession trying to seek a redemption over a night. Simple.

Screenplay is so good that it sticks to story and only to the story. Every characters in the movie are given proper detail (even the one that is out of focus). Being a thriller genre, the screenplay moves like a train that goes very fast and also not forgetting to stop by the right stations.

Entire film has been shot in Chennai during the nights. The cinematographer must surely given the credit to have visualized the city extremely well.

The direction skills of Mysskin is well known from his previous films,he has done a great job as well. The casts including Mysskin and Shri have all lived up to the characters. Interestingly all the characters were given animal-like shades (fox, lamb, tiger, bear etc).

Finally you have Illayaraja's soundtracks throughout the entire movie. One thing for sure, Illayaraja is the only person in India who can communicate intense emotions without words.

The movie has got no comedy but lots of humor. There is no romance in the movie, but it has got lots of love.At the end of day you will have a feel of experiencing, what is supposed to be world class cinema.

Go watch it for Mysskin and Maestro. Highly recommended.

Onayum Attukuttiyum breaks the modus operandi of Indian Cinema that follows a regular diagram we are all aware and definitely bored of. I would like to recall one of Mysskin's interviews with a film web portal, where he reiterated that this movie does not have a hero.

"My movie does not have a hero. But there will be characters that perform heroic deeds" He said

Mysskin is back with a simple story line pictured in brilliant way. He proves that his perfection in his every shot. Every character in this movie is scripted well and delivered at their best. A must watch movie for this who enjoy movie making. Way to go Mysskin! Please continue your perfection!
  • I'm writing this review with shear anger and disappointment! A movie if it was made in Hollywood, would be preserved and the script would be under the scrutiny of the best minds in prestigious universities! But the movie (The Masterpiece) is not getting the Reward And the award it deserves, not even from the natives! Getting to the story, it is not a story that could be translated into such a masterpiece by every Tom, Dick & Harry, Not only the story but the narration is path breaking to say the least! It is about how far one will go to suppress the animal instinct in him and how far a "Refurbished" human would go to remain human! this is the simple one liner and the rest you have to see to believe it! Out of the top 10 clichés (AB)used in Indian cinema flashback sequences takes the cake but in this masterpiece The Director MYSSKIN has given a fresh treatment to the flashback sequence making it effective and impact full! No words to describe the BGM of Ilayaraja and this soundtrack proves why he is the RAJA! A movie for all and a movie (masterpiece) that should be appreciated as well as endorsed by every sensible movie buff!
  • Onaiyum Aatukuttiyum -(A Wolf and A Lamb) - A tense, dark, nail biting thriller with a riveting screenplay containing no songs or comedy tracks and in typical Myshkin style. A simple script but shot well entirely without any drags. Sree's acting was simply perfect. The cinematography was stunning, considering the fact that almost the entire movie was shot at night. Above all,the soundtrack by Sir Ilayaraja was great (except for the final sword fight). Watch out for few amazing scenes like the one where Myshkin narrates his story in a single long take. Just don't miss this classic!

I wish they make more such movies in Tamil,to compete strongly in World Cinema, instead of doing the same commercial stuff over and over. I again wish that big actors have guts to act in movies like this. Hope audience turn out to watch such films.
  • Must watch Tamil film after long time. Hats off to Myshkin. The way he drove the story is excellent. Rather than commenting on whole movie he needs to be appreciated for each scenes he narrated. He did a great great job. Entire movie is awesome. i never got break even a single second.

    Highlights of the film:

CBCID conversation with head of police and doctor (prof) during initial investigation.

Unexpected way of Flash back narration.

Raja sir music is a great plus to the film.

Timing comedies in crucial scenes without humor dialog's.

Location, Camera views, the way story moves are the unexpected keys to the film's success.
  • This movie is one hell of an unconventional thriller flick that made me watch without flickering. I can't say the reason for this. It could be Mysskin's (Original name: Raja) magic or the sweetness of the Maestro Illayaraja (the other Raja). It is one such movie in which the viewer must not read the plot/storyline for it spoils the thrill. The night shots are such a feast to the eyes and the director's acting was also fine. A special mention to young Sree from Vazhakku enn for he did a fine job too. Apart from these and other few, all the others were new faces. Some actors didn't act that fine which I believe is one flaw in the movie, but the camera guy was intelligent enough to focus at distance (Salute to Mysskin again). The other tiny flaw is few loose dialogs at the start of the movie. The movie features no songs but an excellent BGM that makes you remember Bach's Cello suite or Mozart's serenades. Imo, movies such as these must be the country's official entry to the academy. I'm eagerly waiting for Mysskin's next movie and gonna reserve the movie-ticket first-day first-show.
  • Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost, i would like to give a HATS OFF to the director Myssikin. He has yet again added a great honor to our film language. Sure one of the best movie of recent times it keeps our fingers engrossed for a little over two and a quarter of hours. It rightly showcases the human feelings en route its journey. Unlike his previous five attempts in the film industry, this time he perfectly syncs the basic human feelings like devotion, fear, helping tendency, thinking and etc in the story line. Be it the way he begins the story, or providing any breakthroughs, or the way he ends the story, he has made his screenplay to speak ( there are almost no dialogues in the time where you expect) but still his camera tells the story to us. The manner in which he tells the flashback in a single frame and demonstrating the eye-capturing expressions are something new to this generation(although some films like "Andha Naal" have attempted them successfully). Special credits to Isaigyani Illyaraja for providing the perfect backdrop the plot with his 10 bgms which themselves narrate the long story without the help of "Fillers"(i mean the songs). This is one of the best movies of the year. Its a must watch movie for a lifetime. I finish off by congratulating Myssikin for providing a brilliant masterpiece to the Tamil audience. I feel ashamed to state that this hasn't got the essential credits it deserves from the audience.Hope this might be overcome in the future.

    Warning: Spoilers
Saw the movie last week having read countless critic reviews and user opinions that claim this movie as the best of the year.Yeah..the movie started off pretty decent featuring some scenes i haven't seen elsewhere...at least in Indian Cinema. But as time went by the film started turning incredibly stupid and laughably bad. The way the actor Sri acted is one of the most spectacular piece of overacting i have ever seen in any film. His walking looked so artificial and at the same time unintentionally hilarious. His eyes looked like they are gonna pop out any time. The operation scene lies on the line of stupidity and hilarious making it confusing what to make out of the scene(3 Idiots, anyone??). All the other actors, except one or two, also features amateurish acting which looked so stupid. The policemen were the worst of the lot. They keep running in groups and stops at a point and says something along the lines of "the villain is there..lets go there.." and runs like buffoons.I don't know if its a deliberate move by the film maker to incite dark humor but clearly it didn't work for me at all.I think this would work better in a comedy but to include them in a rather serious one like this, would opt NO. Most characters carry guns and uses them like a toy in the hand of a child. Is it another move to create Black humor?I don't know. Jumping from a train holding beds??Works better in a cartoon,Mysskin.. Seeing all this utter nonsense unfolding each minute without any good storyline..i strongly craved for some plot to surface towards the end.But what i got is some half baked story line, which is intended to explain all the happenings, but eventually made no sense at all and created more plot holes. The much acclaimed long take in which Wolf tells his back story in a 'metaphorical' way is brilliantly taken but the acting was flawed. We never got to sympathize with the character. So all the melodrama in that scene didn't work at all.But one thing i would like to appreciate is that he didn't blink not even once during the whole take!!That was incredible but again..futile. A blind child,in spite of all the violent acts and gun shooting happened all around her keep asking for some bed time story!!!Never have i became so annoyed by a child since Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close. Have read many a places that this film is full of metaphors.Yeah..i agree with that.BUT SO MANY OBVIOUS IN-YOUR-FACE METAPHORS!!Phew..thats so pretentious and amateurish..at least for me.For example..the character WOLF really becomes one when he ties a rope in his back and let it hang like a tail!. This is metaphors for dumb Indian audience. The film's only saving grace would be its soundtrack by Ilayaraja. It is out of the box thinking and clearly worked well.Though it annoyed me some place like in the end..its done in a rather good way elsewhere. The final in the coffin is nothing but its climax. In which the villain's henchmen decide to give up guns(a cliché we got tired of seeing in movies) and take swords to fight the 'Wolf'. How out of place is that?what ensues is one the 'so-bad-its-good' sequences which would go down in the hall of fame of movies.Witness it for yourself. Why the film is compared to me 'Aaranya Kaandam is way beyond me.The latter was a fresh breath into the Indian Cinema and never fails to fascinate me with its innovative screenplay and clever, smart dialogue. But this one is a travesty. This film may have worked well for some people and i respect them. This is clearly my view on the film and only mine. Footnote:This film claims as that it has no heroine and no song. That doesn't ensure movie quality, mind it Mysskin.

I was actually reluctant to watch Myskin movie due to the previous and movie, stereo typed of movie making like showing the legs running. i'm not the great fan Myskin's style of movie making and this is based on a Dutch movie. But Sir Illayaraja's music review made me to watch this.

I must admit the movie was a cult classic though. The director trusted the script and characters, and made no compromise like gana songs. First half was okay his usual style which i'm bit bored. The movie soars up in second with greater magnitude which eventually leave with a great sense of feeling about the movie. No one in the world can compose BGM like this. He showcased how BGM lifts the movie. Myskin as an actor, lived in the movie. No boring flashbacks, the story telling was at different level altogether. Story briefing was ultimate to the movie. As usual in Myskin's, everybody lived as character except few clitches in Police dialogues.

The movie might not be a super hit, but it was easily better than many movies released in last two years.

    Keep up the good work.
  • the name itself explains the story - "a wolf and a lamb". the movie too had the same order of appearances - first appears the wolf and then the lamb. i went ahead without even paying attention to online critics because of one name - mysskin. he is such a wonderful director and all his movies, especially - anjadhey and yudham sei has made me his movie lover and here he handled such a heavy script in a very edge of a seat thriller manner..the cinematography and music omg.!! Ilayaraja sir with his BGMs just makes you travel alongside the main characters of the movie. although the movie is set in dark, the cinematography is handled well.. the frame itself tells you million. and i ought to say i have never seen such a movie with such an epic flashback.!! first of its kind in Tamil cinema and thanks to the ACTOR mysskin for bringing that out.! and Sri proves once again that he is no lesser than any-others in acting for such a script..!! i am sad that the film didn't get a good opening due to production problem but it will surely reach great highs like Anbe Sivam.

A must watch movie.! it has such a class in it. so the audience must have some in them too.!! 10 OUT OF 10. great work.!
  • Onayum Aatukuttiyum – a movie for the knowledgeable cinema goers.

    Best scenes:

A group of blind were able to join a person to a killer known as wolf(hero) which is a travesty that the police with the eyes unable to reach him, the director punch lies in that scene.

Shot entirely at night these movie depicts the people of the netherworld, even if you want to do good your dark past wouldn't easily let you see the light.

If you want to give money for timely help a rich man would take it but not a pauper.

Professional doesn't go until finishing his work that applies also to a professional killer (The police who got shot at last who tried to escape by saluting).

The following scene after where a Police who tried to attack the wolf(hero) by asking for water but when needed who could never lay his hand on it.

The scene in the climax where the hero would naturally take the turn to go to the other and a killer who got red handed.

    Cons:

All the police running to the originating station to the last station believing a killer's words and who cannot watch him or see him in the in between stations through other police to know about the killer's location.

The ability of the villain to go to the exact apartment in the climax scene without any information.

    Pros:

Acting of Sri and Myskkin, Ilayaraja's music and Balaji V Rangha's Camera.

With no songs Back ground Music lends the important aroma to the gripping screenplay of the movie.

Just showing to Indian audiences that movie is just not for heroines and dances.

My take: I just cried in the climax and the BGM just enabled me to shed out more tears to come out not only popping but also just flow out and I would like you all to experience it if you are a real movie goer.

    Director: Mysskin

    Music Director: Ilaiyaraaja

    Cinematography: Balaji V Rangha

One of the best movies made in India. A simple story, very racy screen play, fewer dialogs, speaking visuals - a new way of making cinema. Myshkkin gets back to what he does best - thrillers! The movie begins with a break neck pace and proceeds at an even pace right till the finish. No heroine, no stupid comedy scenes, no item songs (no songs at all!), no distractions whatsoever. The movie is so purposefully focused on what it intends to convey. Myshkkin honors Ilaiyaraaja by titling Foreground Music Score: Ilaiyaraaja. Fully deserved credit. Music is so great as if it the protagonist in the movie. Ilaiyaraaja has set a new benchmark in musical score in India and has raised the bar to international standards. Must watch, both for Myshkkin and Ilaiyaraaja.
  • Onnayum Aatukuttiyum- The Wolf and the Lamb. My review.

As usual I saw the movie only now (Dec 25th), quiet late after the date it was released and portrayed but I watch once the cloud settles. This movie is truly one of a king and trend setter in today's hype and commercial filled Indian Cinema. Mysskin is an enormous of a director. In this movie he proved himself a good actor as well. The story though partially based on ancient Greek Aesop's Fable, The Wolf and the Lamb has been well knit and served neatly for Indian audience. Ilayaraja needs no comments, genius. The actors, lighting, location in and around Chennai everything was a master piece. Overall, loved it!

    Naren Pillai.
  • Story is all about how "A sheep which was used as prey to hunt a wolf finally turns into wolf."Story line may be simple and short but the way its shown is all matters.

One more multistarrer movie of this year, Yes., there are three heroes in the film.

Maestro:No songs,.Just BGM for complete 2hrs 45mins and there is not even a single frame where you feel bored. Especially the movie first half was completely On-boarded by the great's masterpiece. He is not here to prove anyone, but this film sets an example on how an opportunity can be utilized.A film cannot be successfully just by having Maestro in it. It should the carry the content, sequences.Director has succeeded on satisfying legend's appetite. One doesn't credited as Foreground composer (முன்னணி இசையமைப்பாளர்) until he is Maestro.

Cinematographer Balaji V Rangha: There is a saying "A picture is worth a thousand words". In this movie the dialogs are very less because "Each and every frame speaks more than 2 pages".Great job done .Of course you can expect the usual Myskin style camera angles but still he fools us at the end of the scene with a twist. As the story takes place in night Balaji has excelled in places with less light. On the whole brilliance and hard-work has paid off.

Sri: Superb, he is using his chances so well which is visible through his performance. His looks and antics have been maintained so well right from the start. Great value addition for the movie. All other supporting cast have helped the director to achieve his product to get the desired height.Everyone are almost new with few are known faces and none looks odd.

**Here comes the third hero** Mysskin: Don of the suspense thrillers Reclaims his place with another gutsy product. Undoubtedly his best work with regards to his previous products.Because he cannot be compared to any other directors.Scores on every aspects of the film. *Wow, What a way to begin(please reach theaters on time else u will miss the opening shot) *Fantastic screen play and ultimate narration keeps us engaging till the end.The writing has been so brilliant and effective that comedy is not added but comes within the sequences. *Movie's dialogs are within 15- 20 pages.Still a great amount of intelligence and importance is given, which is proved in first 15 minutes of the movie. *Actor Mysskin has done a splendid performance.During second half watch for a single-shot sequence that will say the rest. *Best part is the end credits, everyone where just standing right in front of the screen.

Conclusion: *Cinema is a pure entertainment factor-accepted.This year we've already had great number of Comedy movies released with another bag full is waiting. *But movies like OA is one rare product with subject that many hesitate to take up as it may fail if not executed well. *Nowadays promotion has been mandatory even for a movie with huge star. But Mysskin has made his movie having belief on the moviegoers as there cannot be a better promotion than word-of-mouth. ***Watch this movie only in Theaters. As it's only way we can respect such creators***

Effect:For people who hate reading story books or novels, especially suspense thrillers. After watching Mysskin's OA can feel the effect of reading Suspense thriller that too with terrific BG.
  • It's really crazy and damn good. I love myskkin style. But by this awe piece , I just want more of his films
  • pavelbdkl16 May 2020
Boring, illogical and worst acting..why wolf wants to meet the boy?? To tell his past story? The acting was so bad that u cant connect urself with the movie.
  • the wolf and the lamb or 'OA'.....what a movie...Mysskin is not only a wonderful director but also a good actor..this film has 4 heroes actually..mysskin, isaignani raja sir ,sri and cinematographer br...the entire film plot happens during one night..and the night visuals of chennai are delightful..raja sir's background score will haunt u for many days, especially the bits of violin. .actor sri excelled in the role of a final year med student n carried the film exceptionally well along with myskinn ..this film breaks all stereotypes, has limited but strong characters,no heavy dialogues, no songs, intense background score which conveys the emotions and even the use of silence at some scenes is sheer intelligence...finally this film will b remembered as a path breaking film in tamil cinema..a huge respect for mysskin sir .............DONT MISS THIS GEM !!
  • sank8414 January 2014
One of the amazing movies I have ever seen... The movie makes you to sit and think about what's next and why the wolf is doing all these activities... After watching the movie i was able to realize that we also have the great directors and the great movies in Tamil... I feel bad that this kind of movies are not making much profit and a normal movie with a hero's intro songs and action seq making its profit in box office.... It would have been great if the casting was given a little more care... But no worries the acting done by the main roles expect the CBI officers are really great and no more words to tell this is simply amazing....
  • This is not only one of the best tamil films of al time but also one of the best indian thrillers out there.another mysskin magic .may be his best work after nandhalal and yudhem sei.moved by the script and what a mesmerizing bgm .ILAYARAJA SIR.you are again proving you are one of the best muscical geniuses of world cinema
  • This is not a review but a heartfelt expression of love for this movie. It is raw, gritty and supported by excellent acting, stunt sequences and screenplay.

Myshkin has made many movies, 7 years down the line from this one. Each one is a marvelous piece of creativity and effort but this particular work of art is from a different dimension. The movie is fluid as there are no dance sequences, flashbacks or any such distractions.

The main events of the story happen in one night. One emotional, edge of the seat kind of night that you would be grateful for having witnessed.

One particular scene stands out. The story of Wolf and the lambs that Myshkkin narrates ties a thread around the events of the night. The way he unifies the audience with what really happened and why they are running with just a simple story, is the work of a genius.

You will either like or love this one, there is no such thing as disappointed, may be disappointed that it did not last longer. Wish for many more such movies by my beloved Myshkin!

PS - I am giving this a 9/10 as I am confident this director will blow my mind in a more devastating manner, in the future.

From my heart, to yours - SK
  • sunilaas3 February 2020
Wowwww....it's mesmerizing...the movie starts with the climax & total 140min explain about the climax only... there is no detail or depth about the characters but the magic is .... characters emotions easily convey to audience... everything is brilliant... technically top notch... especially music and cinematography... but the bad thing is movie bombed in box office
  • Despite some minor flaws and cinematic liberties taken, this was a great find. I am really surprised that this movie was not one of the all time block busters. Purely screenplay driven and good performances. A must watch for crime thriller audience.
