During early development, John Wells and Noah Wyle originally envisioned the show as more a direct sequel to their previous hit NBC medical drama "ER," which Wells executive produced, wrote and directed from 1994-2009. Wyle would have reprised his role Dr. John Carter. However, they were unable to secure the rights with original series creator Michael Crichton's estate and thus altered the concept and setting to make it more a spiritual sequel instead.
On Valentine's Day, 2025, it was announced that a 2nd season was greenlit.
The Pitt takes place in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania however nearly all of the filming took place in Los Angeles California on sound stages. Several cast members did film for a few days in Pittsburgh around September 2024
One of only shows to have Filipino nurses as a main or recurring cast member. Amielynn Abellera, Kristin Villanueva, Isa Briones, and Matt Mercurio are of Filipino descent and are depicted as such. Filipino nurses are considered to be the backbone of the medical field for their skills, compassion, and commitment. But they are rarely seen in any medical show.
Patrick Ball's (Dr. Langdon) first lead role. Fresh out of drama school, he only had one credit, a guest spot on Law & Order, to his name when he booked The Pitt.
