Oh My Goodness, so funny! So quirky & great cast. Love it!

First off, I love Jay Baruchel and he nails his role as the sarcastic screw up, it's hilarious! This mini series includes a typical Christmas archetype of dysfunctional families that become more dysfunctional during the holidays, but it isn't over-acted or cheesy. It's fun, outrageous, and eventful. The ending is pretty farfetched, but the rest of the show makes up for it. Way more enjoyable than those terrible Christmas hallmark movies.
  • I tuned into this due to hilarious comercials but i didnt get the funny i wanted however it was really really good the characters a re loveable in their own way and the story is great for Christmas its really a good show one of the best shows of the winter and fall season
  • Season one is one of the greatest short seasons available anywhere. Pure enjoyment in every episode by every character.

Season two is mediocre. It meanders. It drops more from season one than it builds on and over all it just isn't very good. Barely worth watching.
  • Wasn't planning on watching it because I usually don't care for sitcoms and though this is a mini-series, it's still a sitcom type show.

I am pleasantly surprised on how much I'm enjoying this show. Maybe it's because I didn't have high expectations. But I like it.

The first show I wasn't sure if I was going to continue watching it. 2nd show it was becoming more interesting. 3rd & 4th I really enjoyed it.

I haven't watched the 5th/6th show yet. But I'm looking forward to it. ;-)
  • The three adult children (Francois Arnaud, Chelsea Frei, Jay Baruchel) of Ann (Elizabeth Perkins) and Sean Moody Sr. (Denis Leary) have gathered for a family Christmas. Dan just broke up with girlfriend Ali. Cousin Marco has new girlfriend Cora. Dan develops feelings for Cora. Bridget cheated on her husband. Irresponsible Sean loses another job. Uncle Roger has new girlfriend Mukta. Secretly, Sean Sr. has cancer.

This should be one of those dysfunctional family holiday movies. Instead, it's been split into six episodes and then shown two at a time anyways. It works better as a movie together. Otherwise, this is fine and fits the genre well. The adult children are perfectly dysfunctional. Uncle Roger could be funnier if Mukta can play against him. There are some other minor characters who don't get the needed space. The other thing about a single movie would be to consolidate some of those minor characters. Overall, I love many of the main actors and this is a functional dysfunctional family holiday drama.

I really liked the characters and the family dynamic. I wish there were more episodes coming up.
  • I've watched 6 episodes of The Moody's and I'll cont to watch if they keep producing them. It's a decent show. I do feel that a lot of the scenarios on have already been played out and it does get very cliche at points. Overall not bad.

Jay Baruchel is the reason I watch this show and give it a 9 out of 10. He is a grossly underused comedic actor.
  • The first episode was a hodgepodge of a dysfunctional family getting together a few days before Christmas. If you can imagine some of the most despicable acts that family and/or their friends can consider doing and/or acting upon their selfish instincts than maybe you will enjoy this. Believe it or not, Denis Leary who usually plays the lowest of all lowlifes, in this mini-series he plays the father named Sean Sr. Moody who tries to reign in his wild adult children. I found this first episode confusing and not funny. Rather, the director appeared to attempt to lower the actor's morals with bad behaviours, immature acts of petty crimes, and gratuitous infidelities all verbal of course since it is Christmas right?

If you enjoy Christmas camp/humour may I suggest you watch a rerun of Christmas With the Kranks (2004), Home Alone (1990), and/or National Lampoons Christmas Vacation (1989), instead of wasting your time on The Moody's Christmas.

    My opinion...bah humbug.
  • Mannnnn, i love D.ennis Leary, but this is pretty crap. Seek out the original Australian series of The Moodys & A Very Moody Christmas.... Much Better
  • Great show, hope they turn it into a full show. Love the family. Light hearted and funny

I started watching this show the first night because I thought "Almost Family" was on. I thought why not? Only an investment of 4 hours. Not sure why they say it's a 1/2 hour show when they show an hour at a time. If it possibly continues, it needs to be an hour long.

The worst thing about the show? Elizabeth Perkins' plastic surgery. It distracted me. It made me not like her character. It seemed anyways that the kids had a better connection to the Dad.

The best thing? It's a trifecta! 1) The sizzle between Dan and Cora (which if this series was longer should have been played out way more). 2) the rekindled relationship between Bridget and Monty. Although he's had a crush on her for probably 10-15 years, he realizes she needs his support and friendship more while she's going through her terrible feelings of being a cheater and possibly getting a divorce. Oh, I felt so bad for him walking up that driveway with wrapped kettle balls and seeing her back with her husband. 3) The exchanges between Sean and Sean, Jr. At first, we see (hear) the son's irritation with his Dad, but by the last episode, we see his acceptance as the oldest with responsibilities and the love and respect for his Dad.

As a side note, I liked Jay Baruchel in this. I would though, like to see him do something where marijuana isn't even mentioned. Does that movie or show exist?

As for most reviewers, the draw is Denis Leary. I've always liked his sense of humor. When he gets good material, he runs with it.

So, makers of this limited series, yeah, there were a few flaws, but who doesn't want to see Mr. Leary bald and beautiful and cracking jokes? Spread the Moody cheer in real life: collaborate with a cancer organization and shave his head as a fundraiser. St Baldricks comes to mind.

    Happy Holidays to all!!

The original Moody series was fantastic. I was so excited for the new series. I'm halfway through the first new episode and I'm wondering who the hell edited this mess. There is absolutely no context to the original episodes. It's as if they jammed several shows into the first new episode. Apparently, they're not looking for new viewers and are relying only on people who watched the original limited few episodes. I watched those episodes and I don't remember everything that happened. The first episode is frantic and confusing. I'm going to hang In there because I loved the original episodes from what, two years ago? Fire the editor please and slow down the story a smidge.
  • Oh my goodness. I thought I might be entertained but I did not expect to be enthralled by this amazing ensemble show! The dialogue is authentic. The characters are real. They all play off of one another in such an effortless way. The writing is spectacular. The acting is out of this world. I find myself rooting for each person and want the scenes to go on forever. What a phenomenal blend of humor, drama, romance, and love. Can we make sure that this show goes on forever? Pretty please?

I'm only two episodes in but I'm ready to just watch all 6. I tuned in mainly for Dennis Leary (as I had not seen or read anything about it) but Jay Baruchel pretty much steals the show. Everyone does a great job. It's not sitcom, laugh out loud, joke after joke type of show. But it has humor, heart and is just enjoyable.
  • My first review ever on IMDb but I just had to rate this comedy. All the roles so perfectly cast and So. Effing. Funny.

Jay Baruchel is a comedic genius in this and Dennis Leary .. well I'm a long time fan.

    Watch it!!

I knew nothing about "The Moodys" before catching it on television this week, but as a Denis Leary fan and someone who will watch anything related to Christmas, this was a welcome surprise. More dry comedy than a typical network family sitcom, "The Moodys" has a pretty standard premise of a family of five---two well-intentioned parents (Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins) and three adult siblings (Jay Baruchel, François Arnaud, and Chelsea Frei, all perfectly cast) who must come together at Christmas amongst various personal struggles. While this is the story of many past holiday productions, what "The Moodys" does differently is a get the tone just right. Usually Christmas comedies run either too broad with far too much over-the-top characters and humor, or they become too overly sentimental. The characters here, despite occasionally feeling like archetypes, are relatable and likable even when they do morally questionable things. Denis Leary is actually the most restrained of all the actors, with pretty much everyone else getting the best lines but Leary remains a delightful screen presence with fantastic comic timing. Those anticipating a typical Denis Leary vehicle may be disappointed, as the story mainly focuses on his grown up children and their inability to truly grow up, though thankfully this material is more amusing and better written than it sounds, Ultimately, "The Moodys" is likely to be quickly forgotten as it is being dumped over three weeks with little in the way of advertising or hype, but for those who like their holiday humor a little dark, it's worth checking out.
  • A lame, pallid, largely unfunny adaptation of an Australian comedy classic. Aside from losing most of the laughs, this American re-make lacks the charm and the family chemistry that made the original work. Amazingly, the younger leads are also nowhere near as attractive, which, given the romantic undercurrents, really matters. In fact, it's every bit as misguided and inept as the recent American adaptation of that other Aussie classic, Rake. Clearly, the American writers and producers don't have a clue about what makes these shows work, which rather begs the question of why they buy the rights.
  • The Moodys is a smartly written adult comedy that ended far too soon. I've always been a huge Dennis Leary fan, but this may be his best show ever. Impeccable casting and clever story lines make this the best scripted comedy I've seen in the last five years. It's a crime that Fox never really gave this show a chance. I think if Netflix featured The Moodys for a while it would quickly gain the same type of popularity that Schitt's Creek did a few years ago. I'm hoping against hope that FX, Netflix, or Hulu will come to their senses and renew this show like NBC did with Brooklyn 99. It's far too good a show to die after 14 episodes.
  • Sometimes original programs from other countries don't need an American version to decipher humour. Check out the original Australian version and understand how Christmas works in a typical dysfunctional Aussie family and how ironic Xmas can be Downunder.

Irony is Australia's greatest asset, enjoy the original and then go back and watch this sub par attempt at this story with some great actors. Not the worst thing to watch but after being a fan of the Australian version why would I need another version of the same? On top of that I'm Australian and we ha stinking hot Summer Christmas's and that one of the privileges of the southern hemisphere.

    Merry Xmas from Downunder

  • I gave this show a shot because I've always enjoyed Dennis Leary's shows (Rescue Me, The Job). While the pilot was a tad slow in places, episode 2 picked up nicely. By #3, I was laughing out loud. Not only is Leary terrific, the rest of the ensemble is hitting all the right notes. I eagerly await to see how the season develops. Throw a few f Bombs into the show and it could easily be at home on FX.

I came here for Francois Arnaud and stayed for the entire Moody family. This mini tv series artfully captures what it means to come home for the holidays. The comedic timing was impeccable by all of the characters as well as the great writing and brilliant performances by all.

I think the relationship between the three Moody siblings was the best part. As someone who has multiple siblings, I could definitely relate to their dynamics- the sibling rivalry and yet always being there for one another.

It was great to see Francois in a more light hearted show and Josh Segarra was a nice surprise too- his character was hilarious!

Overall, great tv show! I've watched it a handful of times on Amazon Prime. I noticed the series has been greenlit for a second season! So excited to see where the Moody's take us next!

I ALWAYS loved Denis Leary and anything he has appeared in. The rest of the cast fit together perfectly...they almost seem like a real family. Offbeat and just downright weird storylines...I love this show. Give it a watch...enjoy!
  • This is one of the best Aussie Xmas short series and again American writers, producers etc crap all over a classic. The US cannot duplicate what makes Australian comedy and it's awful when they try. It loses so much, if you want to watch it watch the original.
