The amusement parks scenes were filmed at Jazzland, in New Orleans, LA. Jazzland was a Six Flags property that was destroyed in August, 2005, when Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast. The park never reopened.
This is the first movie in which Thandiwe Newton has adopted the original Zimbabwean spelling of her first name. Apparently, this was because the "w" was accidentally left out of her first movie titles, and she just 'went with it'.
Lisa Joy is the sister-in-law of Christopher Nolan. Hugh Jackman starred in The Prestige (2006), directed by Nolan and co-written by his brother and husband of Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan. The opening scene with the playing card and the sleight of hand performer may be a nod to that movie, which was about magicians competing for the world's greatest trick (one of whom was played by Jackman); the tagline of The Prestige is "Are You Watching Closely?"
