It’s the next step in the separation of the Starz cable channel/streaming service from the Lionsgate production house.
The effort by Lionsgate to spin off its TV and movie production studio from the cable channel/streaming service Starz has taken its next step. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate has received approval from the Securities and Exchange Commission to spin off its TV and movie studios in a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (Spac), allowing it to continue the process of disentangling itself from Starz and potentially attract new buyers.
The Lionsgate TV and movie studios will merge with Screaming Eagle Acquisition Corp., with the deal likely to close in May. Lionsgate intends to be fully split from Starz by the end of 2024. The change could mean the end of the Starz streaming platform, which may see the rights to its TV and movie library depart with Lionsgate. Save 70% $9.99+ / month starz.

Maidaan Box Office Collection: Ajay Devgn’s Film Has Negligible Growth On Tuesday (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan has been performing very slowly at the box office, and it has been another slow day with negligible hope for redemption. However, the sports drama showed minor growth on the 1st Tuesday, taking the total 6-day collection to 25+ crore at the box office.
Maidaan Day 6 Box Office Collection
According to early trends, on the sixth day, the film earned somewhere in the range of 1.65 – 1.80 crore at the box office. This number, though not very impressive, only gives hope of sticking to this certain pace throughout the week.
On the first Monday, day 5 of its release, Maidaan earned almost 1.5 crore as per estimates, and day 6 shows hardly any growth for Amit Sharma’s directorial based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim.

The excitement levels for the next installment in the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi series keep increasing as fans get closer to the still-unannounced release date. "Invincible" season 2 just wrapped (read our review here). While the long gap after season 1 slowed down the excitement, the second season kept the show's quality soaring higher than a Viltrumite.
"Invincible" may stream on Prime Video, but its origin story lies at Image Comics. Image was founded in 1992 as counter-programming to the Marvel/DC comics duopoly; the founders included '90s comic superstars like Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, and Jim Lee (the man who rebranded the X-Men for the '90s). The "I" on Invincible's costume? It doesn't just stand for "Invincible," but "Image" too.
At Marvel and DC, the publishers own the characters and cycle out writers/artists at the popular ones. Image, on the other hand, specializes in creator-owned comics where writers and artists retain authority. That's why "Invincible" was personally created by Robert Kirkman, author of the comics. When the news came that Power Book II: Ghost was ending, I'll admit it floored me.
Since the ending of the original Power, the continued universe has seen much success. Still, being the first and a direct continuation of the original, Power Ghost has probably amassed the greatest popularity.
But they say all good things must come to an end, and the end of Ghost has me wondering what happens next for the longstanding franchise.
We know that another Power spinoff is coming; this one is a starter story for Ghost and Tommy.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan has proven to be a compelling and worthwhile look into Kanan Stark's upbringing, and considering the franchise's track record, there's no reason to believe the Ghost and Tommy spinoff will be any different.
Everything started with that duo, and it feels like a no-brainer to explore their beginnings and expand things through their backstory.

Getting Camila Cabello’s latest music video for “I Luv It” across the finish line was a task that required some improvising and bribing. The Nicolás Méndez-directed video visual for the single captures the singer navigating car accidents, dog chases, wrestling matches, and more — but the song’s featured guest, Playboi Carti, shows up in a scene far less chaotic, rapping his verse in a gas station. The Power universe expanded considerably following the demise of the original series in 2020.
After the news that Power Book II: Ghost would conclude with its forthcoming fourth season, there were questions about what that meant for Power Book III: Raising Kanan.
Thankfully, Starz was quick to shut down the end date buzz for the prequel series by announcing a renewal for Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 5.
The news dropped while production on Power Book III: Raising Kanan Season 4 was underway, meaning that fans still have at least two seasons of the show to look forward to.
“We know that our fans can’t get enough of ‘Raising Kanan.’ As the inevitable evolution of this young man into a killer plays out, we knew we had much more backstory to share in this ever-escalating family saga,” said Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz.

Power fans, rejoice! Power Book III: Raising Kanan is coming back for a fifth season.
Starz has given the prequel series an early renewal following its February Season 3 finale. Season 4 is currently in production in New York. The news arrives shortly after the announcement the network’s focus has shifted to creating new spinoffs versus current seasons running too long to save costs and the news that Power Book II: Ghost will be ending after four seasons.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan explores the early life of everyone’s favorite villain Kanan Stark, originally played by 50 Cent in the flagship series and shows his evolution from naive teenager to cutthroat villain. Season 3 saw an epic showdown between Kanan (Mekai Curtis) and Raq (Patina Miller), resulting in a couple of surprise deaths and the return of a fan-favorite character. The third Power spinoff will outlive the second.
Starz has renewed Power Book III: Raising Kanan for a fifth season, with the pickup for the spinoff starring Mekai Curtis coming as the fourth cycle of the show is in production in New York. Creator Sascha Penn will return as showrunner and exec producer.
The renewal means Raising Kanan will officially outlive Power Book II: Ghost, as the latter series will conclude with its upcoming fourth season. Starz, meanwhile, is developing a Power prequel series, Origins, which would follow Ghost and Tommy. Power Book IV: Force is currently filming its third season in Chicago.
“We know that our fans can’t get enough of Raising Kanan. As the inevitable evolution of this young man into a killer plays out, we knew we had much more backstory to share in this ever-escalating family saga,” said Kathryn Busby, president of originals at Starz.

Netflix's Griselda is one of the best hits of 2024 so far, and there's a good reason that the show is breaking ground. Fans and critics alike have sung praises for the six-episode limited series.
The biographical crime drama tells the story of The Cocaine Godmother Griselda Blanco, who ruled the Miami underworld in the '70s and '80s and helped establish cocaine trade links between Colombia and the United States.
Sofia Vergara's role as the titular character is highly praised, and many want more to do with this crime drama. While we may not get more Griselda, there are several shows to watch that are similar to the series.
10. Weeds
Weeds is a funnier, lower-stakes version of Griselda, in a way. Hard times drive Nancy Botwin (Mary-Lousie Parker) into the marijuana trade. A widowed mother of two boys, this mom is willing to do anything for her family.

Coming straight from Sundance with their respective buzzy docs “Power” – a Netflix Original – and “Union,” U.S. director/producer Yance Ford and his Canadian counterpart Brett Story delivered March 20 an empowering talk at Copenhagen’s “Film:makers in Dialogue” session, where they bounced ideas between each other about power structure in American society, capitalism, race and class divides from historical and contemporary perspectives.
“Power,” which was competing at Cph:dox for the Human Rights Award, is a forceful documentary essay on the origin of U.S. policing spanning 300 years, turning on its dynamics and impact on American society. “I’m interested in U.S. institutions, power, control in our society,” said Ford about his sophomore feature and follow up to his Academy Award-nominated “Strong Island,” acquired by Netflix for global distribution in 2017.
“After the George Floyd murder [in 2020], I saw the way the police was acting with unfiltered violence towards people protesting, and decided to step back.

Fans of the Power franchise are losing Ghost again — but this time, it’s the series.
Starz has canceled Power Book II: Ghost, with the show’s fourth season to serve as its last. It will be broken into two parts, premiering June 7 and September 6. Watch the teaser above.
The move was prefaced by Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch this week when he revealed plans to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive.
Using the Power franchise as an example, he said: “You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘Ok, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost.’ Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership,...

Starz is eyeing a further expansion of its Power franchise — this one a prequel featuring two of the key characters in the original series.
The premium cable outlet is developing a drama titled Origins, which would follow younger versions of Ghost and Tommy, characters played by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora in Power (Sikora also stars in the spinoff Power Book IV: Force). The project would be the fourth spinoff of Power, which premiered in 2014, following Book II: Ghost, Book III: Raising Kanan and Force.

Ghost and Tommy are getting their own “Power” origins story. As Starz continues to span the “Power” universe into multiple series, the network is ready to announce the official fourth spinoff. The network confirmed Wednesday that it is developing the “Power” prequel series “Origins,” which will follow the beginning story of characters Ghost and Tommy, played in the original “Power” by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora.
Sascha Penn (“Power Book III: Raising Kanan”) will serve as the executive producer for “Origins,” which comes from Lionsgate TV. (It’s unclear whether it will actually be called “Power Book V: Origins.”)
The first “Power,” which debuted in 2014, starred Hardwick as James St. Patrick, a nightlife entrepreneur who is also a massively successful cocaine distributor known on the streets as “Ghost.” He rules that empore alongside his childhood friend Tommy, played by Sikora.

Starz is expanding the Power Universe again with a prequel spinoff series that will reunite Ghost and Tommy.
In the vein of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, which follows the youthful years of everyone’s favorite foe, Kanan Stark (played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson), the new series Origin will follow the early years of the beloved duo of Ghost and Tommy’s (played by Omari Hardwick and Joseph Sikora in the Og series).
Fans of Raising Kanan have been asking for seasons when Ghost and Tommy would run into Kanan since the teens met in high school, yet those characters had never been cast. But as Tommy reappeared after Power in Power Book II: Ghost before spinning off into his series Power Book IV: Force, it would make sense if Ghost and Tommy appeared in Raising Kanan before Origins. And to add one more piece of pure speculation on my end,...

With Starz set to become a pure play standalone public company by year end, CEO Jeff Hirsch is out talking up its strong points and how it competes in a crowded streaming landscape — price increases, bundling, and most importantly, he said, containing content costs with a slate of new shows in development as later season series get costly.
“When seasons go from one to two to three to four [seasons], three to four is where the cost really pops because most of the actors get bigger raises, and you have to really manage that. So, you have to have in your portfolio of development shows that can actually replace shows as they get into later seasons,” he said at a Deutsche Bank media conference today, providing one of the most blunt assessments of a practice introduced by Netflix and embraced by other streamers where shows produced under the Cost Plus model...

Lionsgate Television is keeping one of the key players in its Power franchise under its roof.
The studio has signed Power Book IV: Force showrunner Gary Lennon to a new deal that will see him continue at the helm of the Starz series while also developing further extensions of the Power-verse. Lennon’s deal comes on the heels of Force starting production on its third season.
“Gary has been a major creative force in the Power universe,” said Kevin Beggs, Lionsgate Television group chair and chief creative officer. “We look forward to extending our partnership as we collaborate with Starz to create new and unexpected franchise extensions for Power fans.”
Lennon has a long-standing relationship with Lionsgate TV, having worked on the studio’s Orange Is the New Black and the flagship Power series before becoming showrunner of Book IV. He has also worked on Starz and Lionsgate’s P-Valley and Hightown.
