A retired orchestra conductor is on vacation with his daughter and his film director best friend in the Alps when he receives an invitation from Queen Elizabeth II to perform for Prince Philip's birthday.
The particular inception point of the film, was the story of Riccardo Muti being invited by the Queen to conduct a concert. Because they could not agree on the repertoire, Muti turned the Queen down, which was something Paolo Sorrentino wrote in his diary, and by which was later inspired.
