A remake of Little Shop Of Horrors is in the works with director Joe Dante and original creator Roger Corman.
The last update we had on a remake of Little Shop Of Horrors was back in 2020, when it was reported that Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans were set to star, with Greg Berlanti directing from a script by Matthew Robinson.
It now appears those plans have been abandoned in favour of a different creative team. Described as a “reimagining intended to jumpstart a new franchise”, Little Shop Of Halloween Horrors will be directed by Joe Dante, according to Deadline.
Charles S Haas, who previously collaborated with Dante on Gremlins 2: The New Batch, will write the screenplay. Roger Corman will co-produce with Brad Krevoy.
The story originated as low-budget film directed by Corman and co-starring a young Jack Nicholson. Little Shop Of Horrors quickly cemented itself as a...

As if that’s not eye-catching enough, Rosario stars Emeraude Toubia (Freeform’s hit TV series “Shadowhunters,” Amazon’s “With Love”), David Dastmalchian (Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, Late Night with the Devil) and José Zúñiga (Catherine Hardwicke’s blockbuster Twilight, Sony Pictures’ The Dark Tower)

In honor of Zombieland: Double Tap, we rank all the movies that mixed yuks with human chunks in the zombie comedy subgenre.
For those old enough to remember a time before The Walking Dead premiered on AMC, it’s strange to admit we’ve reached a zombie saturation point. Believe it or not, there was a moment where you were not inundated with zombie movies, zombie TV shows, zombie video games, and zombie memes. Rather the undead were a cult novelty that allowed indie filmmakers to speak truth to power… via allegories involving lots of brain-munching and disembowelment. What could be better?
Now it’s hard to take a single step in the pop culture landscape without landing on a reanimated corpse with a belly full gray matter—not that this should be treated as the end of the world. Indeed, as you’ll see in many of the movies below,...

2017-05-17T13:17:35-07:00'Baywatch' Star Admits to Using Hook-Up Apps
Even though she’s officially a “Baywatch” babe, Alexandra Daddario has used dating apps just like everyone else.“I thought, ‘maybe I’ll meet the love of my life there,'” Daddario, 31, told Women’s Health of her time on Tinder.
But her swiping didn’t last for long.
“People have recognized me and it’s embarrassing,” the actress said.
Besides, Daddario has been busy conquering the beach in order to bring “Baywatch” to life — alongside Zac Efron and The Rock — which required an intense workout program to perfect those famous slow-motion runs.

Alexandra Daddario has also appeared in Burying the Ex and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

While Shirley Jackson is perhaps best remembered for leaving an eerie imprint on the literary world with The Haunting of Hill House, she also sent shudders down readers’ spines with 1962’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The last book written by Jackson is now finding new life in a big screen adaptation that recently added Taissa Farmiga and Alexandra Daddario to its cast.
The news of Farmiga and Daddario’s casting comes from Borys Kit at THR, who reveals that the actresses have joined Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Civil War) in the movie. According to THR, the duo will play “agoraphobic sisters who become divided by the cousin’s arrival.”
Neither actress is a stranger to the horror genre. Farmiga recently played the lead role in The Final Girls, appeared in multiple seasons of American Horror Story, and plays a key role in Ti West’s upcoming Western,...

How could you ever one up a cult classic about adorable creatures that transform into hilarious terrifying monsters if you feed them after midnight? Take them to New York. At least that was the thinking behind the conceit of “Gremlins 2: The New Batch.” An old promotional video, starring the film’s technically impressive “Brain Gremlin” hawks the sequel as the greatest money-making enterprise since the original.

After starring in the Star Trek franchise reboot and a Terminator sequel in 2009, Anton Yelchin could have transitioned to making blockbusters full-time. But the actor, who died yesterday in a freak automobile accident at the age of 27, went in the opposite direction, putting his franchise clout to work on movies by cult directors like Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive), Joe Dante (Burying the Ex), Paul Schrader (Dying of the Light) and Michael Almereyda (Cymbeline).

Anton Yelchin passed away at the tragically young age of 27, at a time when many actors’ careers are just gathering momentum. But Yelchin had already amassed an impressive filmography that stretched back to his childhood, with an eclectic mixture of blockbusters, TV projects, and smaller efforts. “I’m just a huge supporter of this universe of filmmaking,” he told IndieWire in 2011. “It’s just fundamental. I can’t stress that enough.” Here, the IndieWire team shares their thoughts on why Yelchin stood out.
A Rare Screen Presence
Yelchin was the rare young actor to convey a plucky disposition while something gentler and melancholic lurked beneath the surface. As the energetic teen offspring of the troubled shrink on “Huff,” Yelchin was often the sole voice of reason in a sea of anxiety-riddled adults. While they grappled with middle-age, he was tasked with calling them on the pithy nature of their problems.

In absolutely devastating and shocking news, multiple sources report that Anton Yelchin has passed away at the age of 27.
TMZ reports that Yelchin was found pinned between his car and a brick mailbox structure on the fence outside of his home in San Fernando Valley in the early hours of Sunday morning. Foul play is not suspected, as it appears to have been a tragic accident in which Yelchin’s car, which was in neutral, rolled down the steep driveway and struck the actor, who was standing behind the vehicle. According to THR, news of Yelchin’s death was confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen.
Perhaps best known for playing Chekov in the new Star Trek movies, Yelchin provided people with a reason to seek out the cinema time after time with an impressive number of endearing and empathetic performances. First arriving on many fans’ radars with excellent work in...

I've been a fan of Anton Yelchin ever since I first saw him star alongside Anthony Hopkins in the 2001 big screen adaptation of Hearts in Atlantis. When I saw him in that film I remember saying to myself that this kid was going to be a big star. I loved him in that film, and since then I followed his career pretty closely. Everything he's done since has been top notch work.
Earlier today I learned that Yelchin had died in some kind of freak car accident, and it was a devastating blow. He was only 27 years old! He had an incredible life and career ahead of him and learning of his passing kind of hit me hard. I only met him once on a bus at the Sundance Film Festival, but he was a very nice and gracious individual.

Update: The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee actor Anton Yelchin was driving at the time of his fatal accident was under recall, The Associated Press reports. The SUV's gear shifters reportedly confused drivers and caused vehicles to roll unexpectedly.
On Monday, Jeep auto-maker Fiat Chrysler said in a statement that the company is investigating and that it's premature to speculate on the crash cause. The 2015 Grand Cherokees were included in Fiat Chrysler's global recall of 1.1 million vehicles announced in April. A Los Angeles coroner's official has stated that Yelchin's death has been ruled an accident.

Written by: Alan Trezza
Directed by: Joe Dante
Cast: Anton Yelchin (Max), Alexandra Daddario (Olivia), Ashley Greene (Evelyn), Oliver Cooper (Travis)
Breaking up is tough all the way around. Yeah right, usually of all the misery is one sided. The one who lowers the hammer of heartbreak and the other who is left to pick up the pieces. That’s usually the way it goes down, but not always. On occasion there are really, really nice guys who suffer through a bad relationship (sometimes an entire lifetime) because there just doesn’t seem to be a way out without sorrow, a feeling of betrayal, or an amped up display of crazy. Typically it’s a combo of all three.

For all of the hype and excitement generated by Joe Dante’s so-called comeback with 2014’s Burying the Ex, the middling comedy horror proved to be a forgettable romp – one which pales in comparison to the director’s body of work. But before you get down and out about Dante’s recent misfortunes, Variety reports that the filmmaker is wasting no time in teeing up his next creative venture: a supernatural thriller known as Labirintus.
Penned by cult screenwriter and novelist Alan Campbell, the director’s latest foray behind the lens will whisk moviegoers off to Budapest, Hungary, following the spine-chilling tale of a paranormal investigator and psychiatric researcher who throw caution to the wind and explore the city’s more treacherous ruins. Settling on what is possibly the creepiest location in the entire country, Variety teases that Labirintus will see the ghost-hunting pair venture into “an abandoned subterranean Soviet research facility,...

Joe Dante is next trying his hand at the charming tale of a plucky rabbit who just needs to believe he can win the local burrows’ baseball game with the help of... Nah, just kidding. He’s dabbling in horror again with Labirintus. The film will follow the clearly ill-fated mission of a paranormal investigator and psychiatric researcher heading deep into an underground Soviet research facility located within Hungary’s Budapest Labyrinth, deep in the catacombs beneath Buda Castle. As you might be able to predict, they encounter terrible supernatural forces that torment them and their group, and to escape they’ll have to find and destroy the dark heart of the maze that has them trapped. Dante, with the assistance of production company Goldcrest, is looking to kick off shooting next spring, once he has rounded up the requisite willing victims cast members to fill out the doomed ensemble.

It feels like it's been far too long since we've gotten a film from Joe Dante that we've really loved. Every time the filmmaker attaches his name to a film, we get excited, hoping for another Gremlins or The Howling. Hell, we'd even settle for something close to Matinee, The Explorers or Innerspace at this point. But what we wind up with are films like Burying The Ex and The Hole, which don't quite pass the... Gremlins director Joe Dante is plenty busy, but he’s not one of those filmmakers who seems to put out a new movie every year. Burying the Ex came about five years after The Hole, which arrived six years after Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and so on. So it’s exciting to hear he’s wasting no time getting started […]

Burying the Ex wasn’t exactly — or, well, remotely — the comeback machine some of us hoped to see Joe Dante produce, so consider us fortunate that it hasn’t stopped the man of many talents from pursuing features. Per Variety, we know now what he’s planned next: Labirintus, a claustrophobic thriller that sounds like the perfect match for a skilled visual stylist who can’t always raise decent budgets.
Its narrative pairs a psychiatric scientist and ghost-hunting type looking to “explore an abandoned subterranean Soviet research facility, hidden within Hungary’s Budapest Labyrinth, the dark twisting catacombs beneath Buda Castle.” Needless to say, this doesn’t go well, and “supernatural forces confound and torment the group, they begin to question their own sanity.”
Cameras are set to roll in the spring, with Goldcrest backing the project. Here’s hoping this is, at long last, another suitable Dante picture. For more in the meantime,...

There are some films that, upon viewing, you just can’t help but fall in love with (and Night of the Living Deb is not the only film at this years Frightfest to hit me in my horror-loving heart). Back in 2009, at my very first Frightfest as a reviewer – covering the festival for Bloody Disgusting – there was one such film… Infestation. A parody of nature run amok movies like The Swarm, Phase IV and Them!, Infestation was a near-perfect comedic take on the killer-insect genre (even though those original creature-features are funny enough as they are) with stellar performances from Chris Marquette and Ray Wise. Lakeshore Records will release the Pay The Ghost – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on September 18th. The album features the film’s original score by Joseph LoDuca (Spartacus, Ash Vs. The Evil Dead). “There are three aspects to my music for Pay The Ghost that made the experience memorable,” said LoDuca. “I am pleased with the result of my close collaboration with Uli Edel (director) on a horror/thriller score that relied primarily on electronic sound. Over several sessions together, creating dark atmospheres with a gnawing sense of tension was our primary objective.”
A supernatural thriller based on a short story by Tim Lebbon. Pay The Ghost kicks off on Halloween night, when a couple’s young son is mysteriously abducted. A year later, they begin to sense his presence in frightening ways. A string of terrifying clues draws them to search for the boy throughout New York, where they...

The month of August is off to a great start in terms of DVD and Blu-ray releases as fans have an interesting variety of horror and sci-fi titles to look forward to on Tuesday, August 4th. One of my personal favorite zombie movies as of late, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, will be making its home entertainment bow and we’ve also got a handful of other notable titles, including The Last Survivors, Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda, Into the Grizzly Maze, Joe Dante’s Burying the Ex and the fest-favorite documentary, The Nightmare.
And as if a new Dante film isn’t enough to be excited about, Warner Home Video is finally releasing a Blu-ray of Dante’s 1987 sci-fi comedy, Innerspace, on August 4th too.
Lake Placid Vs. Anaconda (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, DVD)

Struggling to move on from a painful breakup can be a challenging task that people often have difficulty with, as they naturally and uncontrollably sentimentalize the seemingly better parts of their relationship. Even when they eventually accept the fact they have to move on and form more positive and meaningful connections, burying the past can still prove to be a challenge. That internal struggle is enthrallingly presented in director Joe Dante’s horror comedy, ‘Burying the Ex,’ in which the relatable protagonist, Max, tries move on from his recently ended romantic relationship. The independent movie, which was released in theaters and on VOD and iTunes last month, and will be released [ Read More ]

It may only be July, but it can take a while to get in just the right mood for certain annual festivities. So, thank goodness for the early arrival of a trailer for Tales Of Halloween – an anthology horror movie featuring ten different segments, directed by eleven different directors.
“Ten stories are woven together by their shared theme of Halloween night in an American suburb, where ghouls, imps, aliens and axe murderers appear for one night only, to terrorise unsuspecting residents.”
In many respects, an advantage of a horror anthology is the fact that it allows for many filmmakers to showcase their work, giving the whole project a fascinating blend of flavours. However, what is notable about Tales Of Halloween, is that – despite – featuring the work of very individual directors, there is an overall tone that snakes through each one, making it feel very much like part of a larger whole.

Director Joe Dante is revered by his fans not only as a filmmaker but also because of his genuine passion for classic and cult cinema. Dante, like so many other filmmakers and actors who became successes, was a protégé of Roger Corman, starting out as an editor. Before long, he had progressed to directing and had a hit with his 1978 horror flick "Piranha". His deft ability to make audiences cringe as well as laugh became his trademark. More successful films followed including a segment of the "Twilight Zone" feature film, his werewolf classic "The Howling", "Gremlins", which is considered a classic by the generation who saw it as children, "Innerspace", "Amazon Women on the Moon", "The 'Burbs", "Matinee" and "Small Soldiers". Gizmo from Gremlins is one of the great, iconic creatures of cinema. He's as easily recognized as Frankenstein and as lovable as E.T. and it's all thanks to a movie that's edgy enough to hook in kids and adults alike. But, in some alternate reality, Gizmo may have traumatized kids. Director Joe Dante, who has the fun new horror comedy Burying the Ex out on VOD now, recently mentioned in a Reddit Ama that they originally had very different plans for Gizmo and that it was producer Steven Spielberg who pushed for the more family friendly mogwai we've all loved for decades. He was originally supposed to turn into Stripe, before Steven Spielberg took a shine to him and decreed he should be the hero's pal for the run of the story. That sent the FX people into...

I’m a Joe Dante fan. That is something I cannot hide. His early work made him a horror icon, and Gremlins stands as one of my favorite movies of all time. These are facts, and if I ever get to meet Joe Dante, I’d like nothing more than to buy him a drink and hear him reminisce about the good old days. You know, the exciting, creative times that yielded scene after scene of infectious horror fun.
Basically, any time before Burying The Ex happened.
It’s not that Dante created a soulless romcom disguised as a cheeky horror comedy. It’s more that any voiceless filmmaker could have made Burying The Ex. No scene glistens with Dante’s typically demented polish, and everyone involved seems to be phoning it in. There’s not a single genuine moment of chemistry to be found between the three members of this undead love triangle,...

This is a reprint of our review from the 2014 Venice Film Festival. A hard film to hate, but an even harder one to defend, Joe Dante’s throwback zombie comedy “Burying the Ex” is a completely unreconstructed B-movie that is perfectly happy to breeze by on charm, nostalgia and the attractiveness of its leads. We’d be happy to give a wholehearted pass were it not for the fact that, seemingly rocketing in from somewhere around 1986, the zenith of Dante’s reign as king of the loopy horror-com, and picking up an oddly early '90s TV aesthetic on the way, a few unwelcome elements have also come along for the ride, clinging onto the side of the fuselage like gremlins. Most unfortunately, and leading to the film’s biggest flaw of using cliché where a little inventiveness would have been nice, there are some stale gender politics happening, which...

Joe Dante has always been a filmmaker that I've deeply admired and I feel that a good amount of his work doesn't get discussed nearly enough. I completely get this talented filmmaker's attraction to the EC Comics-style concept in Burying the Ex, but Alan Trezza's script is too lazy and uninspired for this movie to be anywhere close to a comeback for Joe Dante.
Obviously made under time constraints and budget limitations, with the proper nourishment and a proper rewrite from Dante himself, I could easily see Burying the Ex in theory being a project that could compliment Dante's sensibilities. His trademark influences of Mel Blanc-inspired frenetic humor and the dark surrealistic atmosphere absorbed from monster movie matinees would have been the perfect marriage for this movie's living dead love triangle concept. All Joe Dante needed was a solid script, because everybody knows there is only so much...

It’s a sign of the unhealthiness of mainstream Hollywood — and the corporate theme-park audience it has cultivated — that a good exploitation director like Joe Dante doesn’t have the wherewithal to make a movie a year. It’s true that his work has a wide countercultural streak, which is why highbrow-lowbrows like me love him. In The Howling, his segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie, Neighbors, Gremlins 2, Small Soldiers, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and the "Homecoming" episode of Masters of Horror, he proves that genre parody can also be the basis for potent, subversive satire. But you can enjoy his movies on dumber levels, too. What he lacks is a talent for middlebrow faux-seriousness — the kind you get in “dark” superhero pictures and “family values” monster flicks like Jurassic World. He’s not enough of a bullshit artist.Dante’s newest movie, Burying the Ex, doesn’t make the leap to satire.

Read More: Venice Review: Joe Dante's 'Burying the Ex' is a Loving Homage to B-Movies Between the protagonist's B-movie addiction and a soundtrack that contains odes to "Psycho," Joe Dante's "Burying the Ex" plays like a personal love letter to the history of horror cinema. No wonder it hails from Dante, the horror-comedy maestro whose four-decade career includes cult favorites "Piranha" (1978) and "The Howling" (1981) and the beloved "Gremlins" franchise (1984-1990). With a profound love for the genre, Dante informs his work with a deep knowledge of all things horror, and that's what continues to make watching his films such a blast. "I love horror-comedy because I embrace the absurdity," Dante told Indiewire about his storied career in the genre. "Horror movies are basically absurd, and you can treat it very seriously -- and there's been some great films that are very serious horror films without any.

Alan Trezza's screenplay for "Burying The Ex" might as well have had Joe Dante's name above the title from the moment he wrote it, because it is a perfect fit for the filmmaker's sensibilities. Dante's three leads (Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, and Alexandra Daddario) are all game for whatever he asks of them, and they seem to be having a blast with the material. There's a slightly muted quality to the film, though, which keeps it from being a complete pleasure, but considering how rarely we get a new film from Dante, I'll take something slight over nothing at all. There's a hint of "Death Becomes Her" in this film's DNA, and in certain sequences, Dante's live-action cartoon aesthetic is pretty clearly expressed. If anything, I wish the movie pushed some of those ideas further, because it feels like Dante's having fun and so is the cast. Anton Yelchin plays Max,...
