Taylor Swift’s new song “‘Look What You Made Me Do” is getting plenty of attention due to lyrics which may or may not air petty grievances with fellow millionaires, but behind the gossip is a nifty animated lyric video with an independent film connection. The clip, which debuted on August 24, was coproduced by Swift and music video mastermind Joseph Kahn, who has worked on some interesting film projects.

Kahn made big waves online in 2015 with the short “Power/Rangers,” a violent fan film reimagining of the kids’ series, which starred James Van Der Beek. He also directed the primarily self-financed horror film “Detention,” which premiered at SXSW in 2011. But Kahn’s splashiest works are squarely in the music video world, where he’s helmed high-profile projects for Lady Gaga, Eminem, Katy Perry, and many, many more.

To the credit of the Locarno Festival, the films in the 2017 selection don’t waste time trying to tell universal stories that transcend their time and place. Falling in love varies depending on the social conditions behind it, as Xu Bing’s found-footage film “Dragonfly Eyes” aptly proves, while weaving a story about obsession and surveillance in contemporary China. Similarly, working in a mine in Serbia has a wholly different routine than mining for gold in Suriname, as Ben Russell’s latest documentary “Good Luck” takes its time to show. Even something as widespread as the notion of the work/life balance varies considerably in films from Locarno coming from different parts of the world and set in different milieus, and enough of these films either circumvent or contradict traditional depictions of the home.

The late Chilean but Europe-based filmmaker Raul Ruiz died in 2011, after he had fully completed one of his best works, The Mysteries of Lisbon, and initiated another ambitious project, The Lines of Wellington, which his wife, filmmaker and editor Valeria Sarmiento, finished in his stead in 2012. Not a lot of people were aware that there was another unfinished Ruiz project hiding in a drawer somewhere: A Wandering Soap Opera (Una telenovela errante), the result of six days of acting workshops and shooting in Ruiz’s native Chile in 1990 that was shot but never edited together and scored. The Wandering Soap OperaThis year at the Locarno Festival I am looking for specific images, moments, techniques, qualities or scenes from films across the 70th edition's selection that grabbed me and have lingered past and beyond the next movie seen, whose characters, story and images have already begun to overwrite those that came just before.***The camera’s brief tracking movements in Jacques Tourneur's Appointment in Honduras (1953). This filmmaker, to whom Locarno is devoting an extensive retrospective, is not a formalist like some of his more acclaimed contemporaries like John Ford, Otto Preminger, or Hitchcock, whose overt and idiosyncratic use of the camera makes far more obvious each director’s perspective on their stories. But that doesn't mean Tourneur didn't have formal flourishes, and none are so lyrically charged as the subtle and surprising times in his films when there’s a cut and suddenly the camera is floating...

Tackling this posthumous release from renowned experimental filmmaker Raúl Ruiz with limited knowledge of telenovelas and the subtleties of early ‘90s Chilean politics is like trying to eat a rough cut of meat with a butter knife: there’s every chance it’s delicious — it might even be good for you — but it remains difficult to pin down. Indeed, there is a lot going on in The Wandering Soap Opera (La telenovela errante), a previously unfinished project that has been completed for release by Ruiz’s widow and long time editor Valeria Sarmiento.
It is a work that is packed to the brim with surrealist nods to the radical upheavals that were happening in the country at the time and also to that incomparably idiosyncratic medium, the telenovela itself. Ruiz’s film appears to suggest that as Pinochet stepped down from power, the politicians and Chilean people were acting as...

Every breakout independent filmmaker faces the same challenge: Now what? You could stick to your own taste and never make money on your movies; that requires a second career as a professor, screenwriter, commercial, music video, or TV director (see: Kelly Reichardt, Alex Ross Perry, Zal Batmanglij, Errol Morris).

More often than not, especially in the wealthier parts of this world, having a child is an act of hope. For married couples, it’s a very obvious, very expensive way of renewing their vows — a leap of faith. Some people might have a kid as a desperate means of suturing their relationship together, but nobody does it expecting to get divorced. That’s what makes it all the more devastating when they do.

Noomi Rapace proved her action bonafides as the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but nothing in her badass career features the range on display in “What Happened to Monday” While Tommy Wirkola’s cheesy B-movie plays like outtakes from “Orphan Black” shot on leftover sets from “The Hunger Games,” Rapace throws herself into the zany challenge at hand. Simply put, she plays seven twin sisters in a dystopian society that finds them battling for survival against murky government forces; even as the movie sags into clichés, she remains its enticing centerpiece, shifting from one character to the next, often within the confines of an action-packed scene. She can’t save the movie from mediocrity, but the gimmick of her performance at least injects it with a recurring source of fascination.
“What Happened to Monday” poses its main question in the title, but the other days of the week are implicated as well.

Five films into his feature directing career, it’s growing increasingly clear that Marc Webb loves telling stories about very special boys and girls. If “(500) Days of Summer” and the two “Amazing” Spider-Man movies didn’t make that obvious enough, Webb’s most recent movie prior to this month was “Gifted,” a schmaltzy (but reasonably satisfying) drama about a brilliant child who’s capable of doing college-level math. Still, as the only thing he’s ever made that doesn’t revolve around a super privileged (or super-powered) white guy who expects the world to fall at his feet, it was something of an anomaly in his body of work.
Unfortunately, “The Only Living Boy in New York” gets Webb back on track in such a big way that it borders on self-parody. Song reference or not, the title alone should be a major red flag, but there’s no way...

The soap opera has been the stay at home parent’s friend for several generations now. They’re sappy, dramatic, and universally loved by so many that the reason they’ve stuck around is that people like them for some reason and get hooked on them in ways that might seem a bit unhealthy at times. But in movies they’re comic gold in certain moments because they seem to envelop a story line in a way that is best described as campy, unrealistic, and so over the top that you can’t help but laugh at something that’s supposed to be serious and dramatic.

According to a new report from the folks over at soapcentral, Linsey Godfrey (above) who plays Caroline Spencer on CBS's daytime hit soap opera "The Bold And The Beautiful" is actually going to be returning after all! The reason I say "after all" is because a few weeks ago, Linsey told the folks over at Soap Opera Digest that her character would not be returning to the show and gave a whole big speech about it. At the time, she said: "It is with a heavy heart that I say Caroline isn't coming back in the near future. Days of Our Lives fans want to know what might happen if Chad and Gabi get together. You see, they were loves of one another’s life back in high school – though there is no telling how long ago that was in Soap Opera years. They were together for a long time, they loved one another, and they fell in love again when Chad’s wife died. Of course, it’s a classic story of love lost when a dead wife wasn’t really dead rather just hiding out in another area for a while before making the decision to come back to

‘Below Her Mouth’ Is What Lesbian Porn Would Look Like If It Were Actually Made By Lesbians — Review
There is no scissoring in “Below Her Mouth.” That is about the only position missing from this 90-minute sex movie, which feels like an attempt to singlehandedly correct every misrepresentation of lesbian sex ever put onscreen. Many straight male directors have selflessly tackled the trope, including Park Chan-wook with “The Handmaiden” and Abdellatif Kechiche with “Blue is the Warmest Color.” While those films have artistic merit on their side, each feature laughably acrobatic scissoring positions, which no one should attempt at home, and could only have been imagined by someone who has never actually had lesbian sex.

In “Below Her Mouth,” director April Mullen (“Dead Before Dawn”) and her all-female production crew film every lesbian sex position under the sun, almost as if they had tasked themselves with delivering a primer to all the curious people out there.

Salma Hayek's Beatriz doesn't appear to suffer fools, particularly racist, obnoxious ones like John Lithgow's Doug Strutt in the new trailer for the dark comedy Beatriz at Dinner.
The Miguel Arteta-directed and Mike White-written film (the pair previously teamed for 2000's Chuck & Buck) tackles several Trump-era issues, including racism, social inequality and immigration. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January.
In the clip, Strutt is a pompous billionaire real estate developer while Beatriz is an immigrant from Mexico who works as a spiritual health practitioner in Los Angeles.

I must admit that the bar for late show ideas is getting pretty high. Is it me or is the production value of some of the skits they run getting up there? They’re getting embarrassed more and are constantly doing things that I think most of us didn’t expect they’d do. P.S. this isn’t a complaint. I absolutely love it but I wonder how some of the celebrities feel doing this. I have to think all of them or

James Corden, Jack McBrayer, Claire Danes and Christine Baranski form a complex, melodramatic love rectangle in The Late Late Show's mock soap opera "The Bold and the Lyrical," featuring dialogue comprised entirely of Katy Perry lyrics.

Jack McBrayer kissed a girl — and he liked it. Apparently, so did Christine Baranski. The two joined Claire Danes and James Corden Tuesday night for “The Late Late Show’s” late latest version of “The Bold & the Lyrical.” This time, the CBS series used all Katy Perry lyrics to tell a (melo)dramatic tale. First, Corden and Danes wake up together in bed, possibly married. They’re not alone, however, as “30 Rock” alum McBrayer made it a crowd — and a threesome.
