Small Axe is based on the real-life experiences of London's West Indian community and is set between 1969 and 1982.
Through detailed close-ups, single-take dialogues, and powerhouse performances, Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen has shown audiences his unflinching perspectives on real-world drama.
In this, Letitia Wright plays Altheia Jones-LeCointe, who was the leader of the British Black Panther Movement. In her first scene she is giving a speech to peoples of colour in a factory, after being invited by the trade union to speak to the members. She says "today I am here as a member of the Black Panther movement." Letitia Wright plays Shuri in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the heir to the throne of Wakanda as the younger sister of King T'Challa. It is speculated that, following the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman (T'Challa), Shuri will take on the mantel of queen and Black Panther in future films, much as she did in the comics. (Nov 2020)
