If you are dying today, and you have survived 80's, this is what would be flashing in front of you in the moment of your death. The moment when VCR start syncing your tape is precious and it pushed me back to the past. Idiotic plot is well written, I was laughing sincerely. This movie is fun, entertaining and most of all, awesome. After watching it I went to the street and start fighting with everyone. I think I know karate now. It seams that there is going to be Kung Fury II, and I'm anxiously waiting for it from this moment on. It doesn't have any erotic scene, that is why I only gave it 9. But hopefully, sequel will be filled with 80's eroticism. Thank you Thor.
  • Kung Fury is about a kung fu cop from 1985 who goes back in time to find Thor who then helps him go forward in time to fight Hitler and the Nazis. Does that make any sense? NO?! Good, now you're starting to get it. This is a collection of 80's clichés and culture but the dial was turned up to 11 and just broke.

You ever play Far Cry: Blood Dragon? These guys did, and it inspired them to make a short film. Its kind of like a love letter to the silliness of 1980's American culture with a Swedish twist. To put it this way, do you like the 80's? Do you like cheesy schlock? Do you like neon pink lights? If so, then this is definitely worth your time.
  • Hitler: (Phoning the police) "Hello is this the police?"

Police officer on the phone: "Yes".

    Hitler: "Fuck you!"

Kung Fury started off as a fan film made by David Sandberg that got released on the YouTube as 30 min short film, but in a matter of hours it was a big hit with it's views and the amount of people loved it because they got that nostalgic 80's feel to it. I got so much praised and so much love that it got a big release. So I checked it out myself just to see what was all the fuss about and I got to say that Kung Fury is the coolest action movie of 2015, it's right up there with Mad Max: Fury Road.

What really surprise me is that this is just a fan movie and it blows my mind how fans can make a better and more well made movie then even Hollywood can sh*t out, I mean David Sandberg put a lot of effort to make the whole movie look like a out of date VHS tape and to catch the 80's magic and it payed off so well.

The movie is really funny, the actor who played Hitler in the movie did really good and David Sandberg made a pretty awesome movie that's creative and fresh.

For problems I had for this movie these only a couple like: These one scene towards the end that kind of lost me a little and that's the end battle with Hitler vs. Kung Fury.

Some of the dialogue needs improving a little bit, but besides that this movie is awesome and it brought a lot of the 80's action fluff that we as movie lovers loved in the first place and it's so good to see it again in this brilliant 30 min short movie.

It's free on YouTube if you want to check it out and the video is only 30 mins long and it was 30 mins of awesomeness.
  • Struck by lightning and bit by a cobra, an ordinary cop has a revelation which helps him master a new form of Kung Fu so powerful that only he, the chosen one, can learn. With his newfound powers, he will stop at nothing to bring justice to the crime-infested streets of Miami. No one could have predicted what was about to come his way, however, once he must embark on a dangerous adventure back through time to avenge a fallen friend.

Kung Fury not only put a permanent smile on my face throughout the entire movie, it completely blew me away and well exceeded my expectations. Writer/ director and lead actor David Sandberg may be the new kid on the block, but hell does he ever know how to make a debut! His character, who goes by the same name as the movie, is the perfect cross between Marty McFly, Steven Seagal, and a Ninja Turtle. But I think the film's biggest strength is that it never takes itself too seriously and remains self-aware of its hilarious and intentional cheese.

You know you're about to get on board for something special as soon as you see the perfectly dated vintage look of the main titles and hear the old-school soundtrack the movie sports. The ode to retro games and electronics alone is worth seeing for the epic blast of nostalgia! I can tell a lot of time and passion went into the making of this short indie film and couldn't be prouder to have been one of the original Kickstarter funders that helped this project take off.

What else can I say except Sandberg may have created the perfect recipe for awesome with this epically over-the-top homage to vintage action movies and the era of VHS tapes that any '80s kid could drool over!
  • This is an epic movie. So epic it hurts. It is well produced and you can really feel that it's a genuine dream project of the creator. The pacing works brilliantly, the soundtrack fits perfect with the action and theme, and the special effects is really high class.

Awesome in everything and just simply a great ride! It has laser shooting dinosaurs, kung fu, Vikings with guns, time travel, a Norse god, Adolf Hitler as villain etcetera etcetera. It is plus size extra everything crammed into 30 minutes. It's like riding a roller-coaster of 80s entertainment with everything from street fighter style fighting to a 80s flying credits. Plus, the director/writer/lead actor David Sandberg is strikingly attractive and works really well as the star Kung Fury. Good looking and bad-ass – what more do you need?

You think this review is over the top? Well so is the movie. This movie turned me from a 30- something movie critic into a little fan boy.
  • Ever since the trailer first appeared, I wanted to see this. It was a Kickstarter project from a filmmaker who had a vision of greatness.

A year later, David Hasselhoff True Survivor hit youtube and everyone came excited that the Hoff bought back 80's coolness.

Word spread like wildfire that the Hoff made the greatest music video in 30 years and people realized it was footage from Kung Fury.

In 2015 the date was set for a Youtube/TV premiere depending what continent you were on; a cop from the future versus mankind's mortal enemy, rather "Immortal Enemy" Adolf Hitler, aka Kung Fuhrer.

Set in an alternate future with an alternate timeline, Kung Fury got funded and made.

Kung Fury was a fantastic film, and it is my favorite of the year 2015. It was fast paced and fun, with great lines. It knew it wanted to be a cheesy 80's movie and relished in it and it was a great creative vision.

This is a movie not to missed and it delivers, full hardcore fun and kung fu action.

It's a 10 out of 10....it was short, it was sweet and when it was over I wanted more.

Best movie of 2015, short or not. To quote the great Keanue Reeves, "Wow, I know Kung Fu," and that line sums up this cheesy, action filled, epic!
  • Have you ever heard the term "this is so bad, it's back to good again" ?

Well, this is definitely the reason, or one of them, this phrase exists. This is so bad, there are no words for it. At the same time it's so funny it's actually genius!

If you are looking for absolutely over-the-top gory effects and you probably even are a fan of "Danger 5", this one is for you.

As a bonus, you'll get pretty much every cliché about the Eighties, plus some of the worst hairdo of the era.

    No seriously, watch this!
  • Kung Fury [2015]

    Genre: Insanely hilarious Action

Rating: 8/10 Review: So Bad , So Good !! Yes! This is the real "So Bad, So Good" movie (Y) The best Nonsense movie in a long time. Okay, before you read the review , please note. This movie has a typical / limited audience & fan base. That's why, you will either find a rating of 4/5 OR 1/5. You will "" Like it" OR "You Don't like it" Story: Kung Fury is about a kung fu cop from 1985 who goes back in time to fight Hitler and the Nazis. With a runtime of just 30mins, this is one hell of a ride with cheesy dialogues, over the top action, Retro music , Nazis-Vikings-Dinosaurs-David Hasslehoff all mixed in one epic screen, making each minute entertaining. Dedicated to the 80s style, I just went back in time.

It has everything as a reference: 1. Music & Background score: Electric drum with synthesizer & guitar :D 2. Action: Martial art movies , Japanese Animation, Video games, Jean-Claude Van Damme; Steven Seagal, Rambo ,.reference from the buddy cop movies (Super- Cop / Lethal Weapon)..etc It's an entirely reference oriented movie. Every scene is a homage to some other movie. You can see shades of Quinton Tarentino's dark humor & Grind house type gore everything is covered. But still, this movie is original & stands out! Yeah! Its that good.

David Sandberg: Writer , Director & Actor – Take a Bow! With a limited budget & technology, he has done a fantastic job. No wonder, in less than 24 hours, the film received over 3 million views on YouTube.

I was always waiting for this movie since 2013 & it succeeded to put a smile on my face which completely blew me with its awesomeness & Qtiyapa. Highly recommended. And,.. Thank you Thor! :)

**Just a thought – Kung Fury can be made into an 8-10 episode TV series. It will break all the records.

    Warning: Spoilers
I was stoked on the trailer but when I saw it it was pretty disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the action and visuals are wonderful. In fact, it has one of the funnest Tim-and-Eric-esque action scenes I've seen in ANY movie. The problem is the writing and the humor.

I won't talk about the character development. It's a half hour short so its totally understandable that they couldn't explore their characters and ideas more. However, it can be argued that, knowing the piece was going to be this short, the creators should have tailored their script to be more concise for the short film format.

So let's focus on the humor.

If you have a setting and premise that are absurd and ridiculous, you don't need to fill it with jokes. If you fill it with jokes then EVERYTHING becomes absurd and the audience has nothing to hold on to. The audience cannot point at anything and say, "THAT is the ridiculous element, THAT is the funny thing". This is why so many movies that intentionally try to be "so bad, they're good" fail (I'm looking at you Troma).

Examples: >The use of one liners. You don't need to have your character struggling to think of one liners. Having your character struggling to think of one liners becomes the joke, not the actual one liner. It is bringing attention to the absurdity of one liners existing, rather than just allowing the one liner to happen and be its own funny and awesome thing. Instead of the character struggling to think of, and then delivering, a really bad one liner, just have them deliver the bad one liner with stupid confidence. >POSSIBLE SPOILER HERE Another example is in the animated sequence. "I'm afraid you're dead" "What? But it looks so real?" "Yeah..." The joke here is that our stupid hero thinks the cartoon world looks real. However, this joke is diminished by having the spirit cobra say "yeah..." and look at the camera with a "can you believe how dumb this guy is?" attitude. The audience already knows the character is dumb from the character's dialogue, they don't need another character reminding them.

I hear they're turning this into a feature so hopefully they resolve the writing issues. If they treated the absurd setting and characters as serious, it would create for a much stronger piece. As it is now, it's just a disappointing mess.

Overall: +great visuals +great action +some clever ideas +awesome music, love mitch murder +creators are very talented

-forced jokes -nazi bad guys aren't funny anymore -really dumb hasselhoff joke
  • This is just great entertainment, I backed this on Kickstarter some time ago and have been following and waiting for the reveal of this film, the extra Hoff music video that came out a bit before this was just extra candy for an 80 kid like me :)

It spans a lot of different times and has some really nicely done scenes in all of them, of course the future is the most fun, but also the mix of prehistoric time is great and Nazi Germany with everything in it is also fun.

The characters are very different, they are both interesting well maybe more strange at times, but also fun and has their own characteristics and special powers.

It is truly very well thought of and executed and I was very much entertained.

Hitler is in it! Hasselhoff does a great song! Dinos shooting lasers! Old Odin is ripped ! Time travel ! Martial arts !?

It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things. Its just a really cool short movie that take you back to the amazing 80:s. I do remember that time and some things you just wanna have back. The music, the early electronics etc etc.. The story and the visuals in this movie is groundbreaking! Never have it been a short movie with this tight storyline. When it starts, its on, O yes! 100% Kung Fu, 100% viking power, 100% unimaginable sounds and 100% one of the strangest short movies of all time. So give yourself a 30min of time and see this master piece!

I really wonder what Cannes audiences were thinking when they watched David Sandberg's first effort as a filmmaker not too long ago. I guess they were equally confused and entertained as myself. This half hour is basically packed with every movie/series/game reference you can think of. There's dinosaurs, there's Hitler, there's Nordic gods, there's martial arts, there's hacking nerds and there is so much more. I probably enjoyed the first 15 minutes slightly more than the seconds, but it's a very decent overall piece of movie making and put a smile on my lips several times. It is so over the top, but not in a bad way as this film does not take itself seriously at all. By the way, the Nazio guys who talk about mustaches are actually speaking Swedish, not German, probably because Sandberg is Swedish himself. Anyway, after watching this and seeing the hype around it, even if it did not win at Cannes, I have no doubt that we will see and hear a lot from Sandberg and Kung Fury in the future. It's only a matter of time really before he makes his first full feature movie. Oh and please don't forget about Triceracop, actually my favorite character in here and a true hero as we find out in the end.
  • "In the 1940s, Hitler was a kung-fu champion. He was so good at kung-fu, that he decided to change his name to 'Kung Führer'."

Kung Fury is a 30 minute short directed by David Sandberg who financed the film through a kickstarter campaign raising over 600,000 dollars. It is a homage to 80's bizarre action movies with its colorful neon lights, cheesy one-liners, and over the top characters. David Sandberg plays the titular character as he is a Kung Fu cop who will have to travel through time to defeat the most dangerous criminal of all time: Adolf Hitler (Jorma Taccone). With the help of Hackerman (Leopold Nilsson), who can even hack time, he travels to the past in order to face his fearless enemy. Along the way we encounter dozens of wacky characters like Triceracop, Thor, two Viking babes named Barbarian and Katana, who save him from the Laser Raptors. This is a flat out crazy homage to those classic films, but unfortunately despite it all I never really had fun with the film. It was an entertaining watch and it was interestingly produced to feel like an authentic 80's movie, but the screenplay was just too bizarre for my liking. I was born in 1981 so this film should appeal to me, but I didn't get any sense of nostalgia. I did enjoy however, the score of the film and the song from the Hoff. It made my viewing experience a little more entertaining. Despite some funny moments, the short was a miss for me.

  • The title says it all. This is a movie that must be seen, trying to explain it would be pointless. It's easy to find on sites that have videos and stuff.
  • This is one very amusing, very campy and very absurd ode to the 80s. Every second of this work of love is entertaining and artfully planned. Shows sheer talent, passion, heartfelt nostalgia and mind-bending originality in this crazy take on one bygone era. Absolutely magnificent!
  • One can hardly believe that such a movie can be done with 200000$. It is filled with special effects, fun dialogue, ridiculous puns, wonderful references and it is completely utterly ludicrously over the top.

David Sandberg writes, directs and acts in this film which covers kung fu, Adolf Hitler, machine gun viking chicks on dinosaurs that shoot laser out of their eyes, Thor, 1980's hacking and time travel. The guy looks very familiar, so either he has a lookalike or I've seen him in something else on the web. IMDb is so unreliable when it comes to "unofficial" video productions.

Really loved the short 30 minute film. I especially respect that it is a fun production done with money from Kickstarter and released for free, on YouTube and other places. Haven't had so much fun since Star Wreck.

Update: I remembered the face now. I thought he was Milo Ventimiglia for some reason.
  • Thirty minutes just isn't long enough!

This is great - it manages to be very very funny by being simultaneously very dumb and very clever (you choose the level you east to enjoy it at).

So many fondly remembered clichés compressed into a half an hour of non-stop laughs.

I seriously hope this gets remade into a full length movie because it's worth it.

The quality of the CGI and production is great - it's just like watching something on VHS (did we really do that? Anyone who had only known DVD doesn't know how lucky they are!).

There are so many great 80s movies referenced in this film - is like revisiting my childhood again.
  • Well, if you are a nostalgic geek like me and love the 80s in that sort of "romantic" kind of way, you have to watch this short film.

It's sort of a crossover between those cheesy, or should I said cool, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris action-movies with funny one-liners, and TV-shows like Miami Vice and Knight Rider. Spice it with some good old TV-commerical and Cartoon elements style a la 80s and there you have it.

This film is only for nostalgic people, who perhaps grew up in the 80s/90s and can associate with the quality of an old VHS-tape on the screen, and of course the music which stand for itself in that era. But I would love too see a feature film like this or another homage to this particular genre, so that maybe the younger MTV-generation can learn to appreciate this style of movie-making and the heritage from the 80s.

    8/10. Tank you.
  • A street cop (David Sandberg) is hit by lightning and bitten by a cobra, transforming him into Kung Fury, a powerful martial arts master dedicated to fighting evil. When Adolf Hitler (Jorma Taccone)—the Kung Führer—travels to the present to kill Kung Fury, our hero leaps into action—by travelling back in time to 1940s Nazi Germany to battle the dastardly dictator.

We've already had faux 70s grind-house and retro 80s horror; now we have faux straight-to-video action in the form of Kung Fury, an outrageously daft short that offers up such silliness as a killer arcade machine, a sexy, wolf-riding Viking warrior woman armed with a mini-gun, dinosaurs with laser eyes, a cop with the head of a triceratops, and a hacker who uses his computer skills to heal bullet wounds.

The film features a heavy dose of tasteless 80s graphics, a fitting synthesizer soundtrack and even goes so far as to throw in video tracking problems for that authentic VHS vibe; sadly, it also includes an awful lot of unconvincing CGI which seriously detracts from its credibility as a product of the 80s. Had the makers gone 'old-school' and used some shonky stop-motion for the robots and dinosaurs and a few bad matte paintings for the backdrops, it would have been a whole lot more convincing—and, as far as I'm concerned, a lot more entertaining.

There is nothing to say about this movie other than everything is perfect.
  • It's difficult to review a movie like this, but it obviously is doing exactly what it wants to do, and can't be called anything but a success. The people this movie is made for will love it, what anyone else thinks is besides the point.

    But here goes.

The movie is an extended skit more than anything else. Over the top action with a cast of characters who are almost like a mosaic of popular culture icons. Kung fu master, dinosaur/cop-hybrid, Norse viking gods, Hitler, laser raptors, arcade cabinet robot, etc. The movie's aesthetics is that of a well used VHS, matching the 80s vibe of the plot perfectly. There are jokes and gags throughout, some which are delivered with a 100% confidence, and others (for some reason) delivered ironically.

In addition to a skit, this is also very much an SFX-reel, where David Sandberg and his people show off what they can do visually. No concept seems to far fetched for them, and they're not concerned with photo realism - they will gladly avoid it if it makes for a funnier/crazier scene. It's fun to see how they mash up computer graphics, practical effects, green screened actors in costumes and stock footage. It makes you wonder why more young people are not out there making movies. Hopefully this will inspire them.

Despite being what it is, there are flaws. As mentioned before, some jokes are delivered tongue in cheek or ironically, which takes away from the fun of the film. As I see it, they are not trying to poke fun at 80s/90s action movies, but celebrate them. The audience is aware over how cheesy some of the lines are, no need to point it out. I guess the cast works, but it seems to be a combination of perfect matches (Thor, the viking girls) and people being friends of the production crew. For a movie with this, bad acting is not a problem. But it's more enjoyable with exaggerated performances (see: Thor) than "doing this for fun"-ones (like many of the smaller parts).

Now, I know this review will not change anyone's mind. If you like the concept, watch this movie at once and love it. If you hate the concept, or feel it's not for you: you're probably right. I'm giving it a 7/10 because I mostly enjoyed it. I hope this is the start of an interesting career for David Sandberg.
  • Warning: Spoilers
A few days ago, a new short film I've never heard about appeared on Netflix. With the title Kung Fury, I was intrigued and decided to give it a look...and I had absolutely no idea what I was in for with this short film. It turns out that it's not a traditional martial arts film...nor even an untraditional one. Instead, it's an insane and ultra bizarre film!

The film is supposedly set in Miami in the 1980s--and at first, this seemed plausible. After all, the soundtrack is pure 80s....but soon I could tell this wasn't the 1980s I remember! Instead, it's like a combination of old school videogames such as Street Fighter and Mortal Combat along with television shows like Miami Vice and Knight Rider combined with healthy doses of LSD! The story is about a super-hero cop, Kung Fury, who ultimately does battle with Kung Fu Hitler after traveling back in time! But Kung Fury isn't alone...he's assisted by two machine gun-wielding Viking maidens, Thor, a T-Rex, his partner Triceracop and a super-hacker!! None of this film makes much sense...I am warning you. But it's also very funny and you just can't stop watching. It's extremely bloody and violent...but it's all very cartoony violence. And, speaking of cartoony, there's even a cartoon segment towards the end of the film that looks an awful lot like one of those 80s GI Joe cartoons!

The film is the project of David Sandberg, a young Swedish filmmaker who directs, produces, wrote and stars in Kung Fury. He got his financing through a Kickstarter program and has released the film for free on the internet. And, most importantly, it has a special appearance by the unofficial king of the 1980s, David Hasselhoff! I wish I could say more, but you just have to see it to believe it! I liked it and hope you do as well.
  • Massive in-joke full of tongue-in-cheek references to eighties' action movies, kung-foolery, Frank Frazetta posters, arcade video games, He-man era animation, cheese-and-cleavage adventure films, etc. After 5 minutes I was relieved to find out that it was only 30 minutes long, but even then it almost outstayed its welcome. Interesting and well done (for what it is) but not particularly clever or memorable. I won't be holding my breath for the sequel but I'm sure others will be.
  • This was absurd. As another reviewer put it, absurd in a "good way." No. Absurd is absurd. Look, I got it. The humor wasn't lost on me. But there's clever, thought-out, irreverent humor, and then there's this. A few gags were credible. I did laugh. So I have to give it a few stars, at least.

It's the kind of stuff you talk about with your college friends nerding over 80s white-boy entertainment (the Japanese-influenced elements are still white-boy) but never have any way of pulling off. There's a reason for that. Somehow, these guys just managed to find the cash. About a third of it was well-executed. The other parts were it-was-funny-at-the-time or guess-you-had-to-be-there kind of humor.

And maybe that's why there are so many ten-star reviews. I've noticed quite a number of them say, "I supported this on Kickstarter." Yeah, of course you think it's great. Don't read those reviews. They're experiencing cognitive dissonance.

The only reason I lasted the full half-hour was because it was a half-hour, still about 20 minutes too long. Some of the best gags could have been done in a ten minute short, and good fun would have been had by all. Since it was about a third good, I give it a third of the credit. Three-point-three-three stars. But since I have to round it off, just three.
