I'm not sure where people are getting Poltergeist meets Close Encounters Of The Third Kind meets Children Of The Corn, clearly they have not actually seen those movies. I was also confused by the complaint too many TV shows are serious, did the commercials for it make it look like it would be a comedy? I like the TV show, it's not the typical show, maybe that's why some don't care for it-some are a bit harsh imo-The point is to not know who is going after the children right off the bat, the point is to wonder who it is, and wait to find out! Lily is fantastic, Abby Ryder Fortson is great, the rest of kids are believable and adorable and I'm glad to have something different to watch this summer :) Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I suggest checking it out for yourself :)
  • The show started innocently, everything seemed normal but then slowly the mystery creeps in and as it does you're getting sucked into the story. The Whispers is definitely not the most original show this year but it is a good one. You sort of know where it goes but you also wanna see how it plays out because the characters are somewhat interesting and the storytelling is satisfying. The history between the Benningans and Lawrences made it a little more interesting because as a viewer you know that it will hinder the progress of the investigation, which is frustrating, but at the same time you know that it's human nature.

The children are the great and I mean the characters as well as the actors. They're innocent and creepy as hell at the same time and not once did they felt like stupid kids for listening to a voice in their head. The Whispers is quite the entertaining show despite using an old formula that we've seen and revisited again and again. I was on a sort of a sugar high as I watched the last seven episodes in one go.

  • Well, I enjoyed it. It felt a bit like the miniseries "Taken" and also somewhat like "The 4400." Did I think it was as wonderful as I thought "Taken" and "The 4400" were? No - but it kept my interest. The acting was competent, the visuals were good, the soundtrack was appropriate and enhanced the mood. Actually, the story isn't a new one. It's an expansion of an old Twilight Zone episode - Drill and all, and, yup, there was a little girl named Minx. I don't remember the name of that episode, but it was a good one. :) I tried looking it up online so I could include a link, but couldn't find it. I'm surprised no one else has noticed this - or maybe I'm just plain old.
  • The Whispers is an American television science fiction drama series created and co-executive produced by Soo Hugh with executive producers Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Dawn Olmstead for ABC Studios

A series of accidents occurs around children, who all communicate with the same invisible and seemingly imaginary friend called Drill. They secretly play his "games" in return for rewards that Drill promises. Claire Bennigan, an FBI child specialist, investigates and finds connections not only between the different children's cases, including her own son, but also to her missing husband.

On October 19, 2015, ABC canceled The Whispers after one season.
  • The idea of the show is so new and fresh, the plot is really thrilling , the pilot went sensational on the Mysteries from start to finish ,, you won't stop asking questions, the screenplay appeared strong and tightly written,, the story itself seems to organized they bring you all the crimes and then connecting them all together. Soo Hugh is not new on the Sci-Fi writings he's written some for "Under the Dome" and "The River" but i feel this one is gonna be something different ,, and i mean fantastically different and really intriguing and catchy from the first 5 minutes.

As for the cast, you gotta love Milo Ventimiglia (Peter from Heroes :D) he's so fit for this role here,, Lily Rabe and Barry Sloane are doing a fairly good job so far,, and the little Kids .. bravo ,.

Overall,, ABC has cancelled Forever last month , and i think they're somehow replacing it with this ,, and even though this show is more into seriousness drama and sci-fi ,, i think they will make it work flawlessly with such high ratings. ,, again this network have so much experience for picking up a huge thrilling full of mysteries shows,, so lets hope for the sake of us the audiences that this is one of them ;)
  • There should be a season 2. I don't understand why it got a bad rating it was a good original show. With an ending like that there should definitely be a season 2.

  • In the spirit of unworldly enticement, The Whispers uses theme of enigmatic children who hear the calling of an imaginary friend. While it dabbles in mysterious premise, the visual is pleasantly bright and less brooding. The focus on children and their family opens new audience other than sci-fi fans, along with versatile cast, The Whispers offers a more accessible thriller.

It follows a simple concept of an unknown presence that talks only to children. People consider it as harmless fantasy before the message gets sinister. There's no gore or overly nasty scenes, this is a milder sci-fi show, which is understandable due to the delicate premise. However, it still presents a couple of eerie moments with just enough restrain and bizarre twist on the usually innocent children. The tone isn't as dark or gritty as other shows. In fact cinematography resembles usual drama shows. Setting is mainly in suburban neighborhood, with occasional venturing to more mysterious places. It looks decently suitable as the environment is recognizable, though might not awe audience with incredible shots of glamorous vista.

Acting department has an eclectic assembly of actors who has a lot of experience in drama or mystery. Milo Ventimiglia is a versatile actor, it's nice to see him in a more leading role. Furthermore, the show has a few similarities with Heroes which should be very familiar for him. Lily Rabe dons a commanding role, she appears strong, but might fall to the stereotypical tough woman. One of the better performances from the child actors belong to Kylie Rogers as Minx who seems eerily fitting as an indigo child.

The Whispers doesn't deliver the mystery with much intensity or grit. While this might deter fans of sci-fi or thriller fans, the overall production value is competent enough to deliver a dramatic puzzle.
  • I just watched the last two episodes back to back and I didn't want it to end!!! Absolutely incredible writing!!! Kudos to the writers for those two episodes!

There were a few flaws though but none the less it was incredibly entertaining and took my breath away! Any show that can fool the audience as to who the suspect is....Keep the audience on the edge of their seat and make them forget to breathe, is a show that deserves the best of reviews! I don't know why there were other reviews with negative views...Compared to most shows, The Whispers, rules!

I have the feeling of not being able to wait until next season! I'm hooked and cant wait to see how the second season pans out.

Also thanks to the cameraman for not making a shaky picture. Some shows really over shake the camera to bring on a different approach or feel of the scene but it's most often not needed.

    Great show! Great actors!

Thank you for restoring my TV show interest!
  • The Whispers taps into well established sci-fi/horror genre of an unseen other.

The series mixes elements reminiscent of films such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Children of the Corn. The children in this series are influenced by an unseen presence who controls and manipulates their actions, seemingly with nefarious intentions.

Its not a new premise but its carried well with above average acting and good directing. That said, this series is not doing anything new and the tiresome "the nation (US) is under threat" malarkey has well and truly had its day.

An OK watch, just don't expect anything special. Six out of ten from me.

    Warning: Spoilers
Too many shows take themselves too seriously these days. It is especially troublesome when the show has a somewhat improbable premise. Here, it is hard to get involved in a story where the adults are so very concerned with the entity named Drill and the safety of their children, but are mostly keeping information to themselves and not raising the alarm. They all seem to think they themselves are the only chance for human survival. I sure hope not because they are some of the stupidest characters on TV. Just as an example, the child Minx. Her parents know that this invisible entity is contacting their child, that he travels via electrical wires, that me leaves a heat signature and can be monitored, that he talks to the children through the lights, etc. yet they let her sleep alone in her room, with the door closed, in a bed strewn with colored lights, even after knowing she has been contacted by the entity several times in her bed. The parents of these children also seem to loose track of them too often to demonstrate any concern. Would you let your child out of your sight if he/she was involved in this? Lighten up and give the adults some intelligence. It may be science fiction, but it still has to make sense.
  • I, like a lot of the reviewers, didn't think much of the show when it first began. The first couple of episodes were quite confusing and left the impression that this was going to be one of those dull shows with sluggish plots that take ten episodes to tell a story that could have been told in three - I was wrong.

After the first few episodes the show eventually began to open up and everything started to make sense. The show goes from a confusing series of unrelated events into one big brilliant interwoven plot that leaves you wanting more. Although a lot of what's going on remains a mystery, there is enough progress being made by the characters to keep you interested and entertained.

I see this show really making it big if it stays on it's current path. Definitely one of my favourites this year.

I advise anyone out there to give it at least 4 episodes before writing it off, you won't regret it.
  • It's a mixed bag. As the show started, I was not enjoying the preciousness of the children as they preciously acted precious. The treehouse-girl's simpering voice was a little too much for me. I did not like the lead actors much, either. It seemed horribly cast, and the backstory of the child's deafness and the father's death were too much. Everyone in the first episode was trying too damned hard. At the baseball game, for instance, all of the parents emoted and acted and acted/emoted heavily through the scene. In terms of direction, the director seems to have kept pushing the actors to give more and more and more. "Dial it UP A BILLION NOTCHES" seems to have been the director's most frequent command during shooting, judging by the grimaces and head- wagging and bug-eyed shock of all the actors. Then at some point I realized I was watching Milo Ventimiglia and I relaxed a little. Then I recognized Dee Wallace playing the main character's mother or grandmother or nanny (that could have been explained a little better), and I relaxed further. And I started enjoying the show a little more. Ventimiglia brought some acting skill that broke the ridiculousness of the first episode's tone. I made it through the next two episodes, binge-watching it and enjoying things more and more. It's a mixed bag, I say. The story should be compelling and fascinating, and at times it is kind of interesting. But...something is missing. I don't know what. I'm going to watch the show as it unfolds, but I wonder if the director and producer were trying to squeeze too much intensity out of the actors in those early scenes.

The Whispers had a great start, but it's now the extremely dumbest show on TV. Imagine this: you discover that there's some entity using kids to attack you when they are near anything electric, cables or appliances. Not all kids, just the kids of HIGH LEVEL politicians, military and scientists, and, this is the kicker ... the PRESIDENT!!! Now, we have to allow for some delay in combatting this, because ... it's KIDS you know? But the FIRST thing you do, is NOT ALLOWING THE KIDS NEAR THE PEOPLE THEY ARE SET TO INFLUENCE: THEIR parents! Who, AGAIN, are all HIGH LEVEL politicians, military and scientists! At the very least, you do NOT allow the kids to be near ANY electricity. But none of this. The adults allow themselves to be manipulated by their own kids, even after everybody knows their kids are being used to manipulate the parents. It's the height of stupidity.

One excruciating example is Minx, who is threatened to be killed by Drill unless her mother kills someone. How stupid and unfit of a parent do you have to be, that your kid constantly obeys their imaginary friend, instead of you?? If your kids are THAT stupid, perhaps they deserve to die.

This has got to be the dumbest show EVER.

    The Melancholic Alcoholic.
  • I am a huge TV/movie person. I am always watching no less than half a dozen series at one time, although, I have never had a show that compelled me to stop and write a review. This show is the one. Not only do I get to see Peter from Heroes- but I get my fix of all that I crave in a good series(not in any particular order): conspiracy, action, violence, sex, tension, mystery, intrigue, betrayal, emotion... emotion- that is what did it for me. The last half of the series has an incredible build up. I cried. I held my breath. I stood motionless for 20 minutes in the middle of the room completely forgetting my banana and chocolate ice cream mission. It stuck in my brain for hours after and I caught myself humming the intro song today while cleaning. As a wife and as a mother this show reached down deep into fears and nightmares- hid in the shadows of morality and behind the doors of grief and loss..all while being wound so tight I have caught myself holding my breath and forgetting about ice cream. Who forgets about ice cream?? If your looking for a roller coaster ride that will suck you in, churn your stomach, twist your heart, and linger in your thoughts- this show is for you.
  • Some children have the same imaginary friend named Drill. Drill tells them to some mysterious and possibly dangerous tasks. Child specialist FBI agent Claire Bennigan (Lily Rabe) is called in. Wes Lawrence (Barry Sloane) is from the defense department looking into Claire's husband Sean (Milo Ventimiglia)'s military plane crash which turns up halfway around the world. Wes had a previous affair with Claire.

There is only so much that creepy kids can do before it gets really repetitive. The little kids causing mayhem can be fun for an episode or two but eventually it gets tiresome. That is the main drawback of this show. I was actually glad that it finally turns into an alien invasion show. It just takes too long to get there and the pacing struggles a lot of the time. It is a show that needs to grab the audience sooner.
  • Excellent show that would do well if adopted by Netflix to secure a longer run than one series.

The promise was there for the programme, may be we should have got there quicker for it to survive the culling from a myopia executive at ABC.

I recommend it, though without a second series being made, it is rather short, with passing probably too slow to build to the promise the end of run cliff hanger gave.

    Are we alone?

    Yes. ABC canned it.

I like the show so far it gets interesting, The show has thriller i love how the children play their role really well each person does their part super well. The first episode had me hooked on it i kept going to the next episode, more episodes need to be made i am patiently waiting for the next episodes to come out i cant wait my excitement is going crazy for the next episodes. Good episode was when the little boy had spoken and the mom was so happy, the look on her face was so priceless she was so happy to hear him finally talk after so long. Overall great show needs more episodes to come out fast. I hope each episode stays interesting always.
  • Does anyone know who TF cancelled this show as he/her and everything in between may have been suffering from chronic constipation plus they should be awarded the A hole of the decade award, apparently it's a very prestigious award.
  • I've been following the show since its premiere and was blown away by the concept. However, the cinematography really holds back the potential of what the show can be. Every time I watch, it feels like I'm watching a TV commercial.

The seriousness and reality get's lost in the overly bright color correction and typical TV lensing. I can't help but imagine if the show's color treating was a bit more desaturated to give it a more serious tone, and would be epic for this show.

The perfect example of great cinematography and tone would be AMC'S The Killing, or better yet ABC'S recent show American Crime. In which both were lens beautifully with nice wide shots and detailed focus on painting a visually stunning and realistic world.

Overall I do love this show but feel it falls short on that note which is a bit disappointing for me, but let's see how the season progresses maybe the shooting style & tone will progress with popularity.

I wish ABC's Production Department would list a credit at the end of this summer series and give credit were credit is due. "The Whispers" is adapted from Ray Bradbury's short story "Zero Hour" and also a 1958 Movie entitled "The Space Children" which was Directed by Jack Arnold with story by Tom Filer, and screenplay by Bernard C. Schoenfeld. "The Space Children" synopsis in one tag line: 'Slowly...and with horror the parents realized THEIR CHILDREN WERE THE SLAVES OF 'THE THING' FROM OUTER SPACE!' Sound familiar? It should, because "The Whispers" also derived (stole?) a lot of their plot line from this 1958 movie as well. In fact, many, many years ago Steven Spielberg mentioned that he liked this movie ("The Space Children"). How 'bout that, eh?

"The Whispers" is quite boring with good suspenseful music that makes one feel something very important is about to happen and you will finally know and understand what is going to happen next... Unfortunately we don't, but the music score continues to tease us. Very frustrating! It's like trying to have sex... a lot of foreplay, without the resolution, the pay-off...you know... THE CLIMAX! They should have condensed this summer series into a two hour TV movie and give proper credits were credits are due to "Zero Hour" and "The Space Children". Mr. Spielberg?
  • This show was intense with its mysterious beginning and ending. You wanted to watch the next episode right after the other. It made you wonder what are they going to do next and in what direction they will be going. It was almost like Stranger Things.
  • In general the series is good. However, the characters made decisions that no body with at least two neurones will make.

I understand that sometimes silly actions need to be taken to advance the plot, but these ones were lousy writing.

That being said, I would like to see a season 2.

Supposed Government Agents, almost ll of them with huge conflicts of interest allowed to remain on the case is bad enough, but they refuse to share information and act without supervision. Claire Bennigan for instance should have actually been arrested and probably sent to GitMo for the way she acted. Are they purposely trying to make the FBI look stupid and not getting pulled up for it???

Throw in kids doing stupid things but it's OK because an invisible person told them to do it. I deal a lot with kids a lot and I've seen some 'interesting' cases but even 2 year old kids never as stupid as these. I know what, lets make mommy fall down, or lets just ride a few miles away on my bike because another kid I never met before told me to (while I leave them alone in my house.) Oh, and let's just let anybody walk into our nuclear power plant because the alarm went off - while kids also walk into the center of the same nuclear power plant through open drainage piping. What??? Is it really that easy to get into those sorts of places??? Why would terrorists take flying lessons and hijack planes if it were that simple to just walk into these sorts of places?

The idea was OK, but very very very badly made.
  • OK so I have very mixed feelings about the series. The story-line was fantastic. But the actors improvisations at times made me want to toss my MacBook Pro into the backyard (wouldn't have really lol)! I mean the endless meaningful looks and gentle arm and shoulder grabbing that went on between Rabe and Sloane just made me cringe. At some key points the script could have been a lot better. Other than that all the rest of the acting was good. After seeing Miracles from Heaven I am an avid Kylie Rogers fan! Her acting is superb and her crying is extremely convincing too. Towards the end of episode 12 I must say my eyes got moist! Kudos to her! I am also hoping for someone to buy series 2. The show cannot be left with just one series! Highly recommended!

I've only seen the first season so far, but I'm kind of intrigued. At least enough to continue watching it. It's not a great show, but I like the concept. Its derivative of a few other things I've seen, but no too much to make it boring. It's kind of a weird 7 degrees of plot with a kind of sci-fi spin. I think aliens and/or ghosts are involved and maybe time travel. Some military guy disappears and then years later is found along with what looks like it may be an alien space ship. This being named Drill talks to only these kids and coerces them in to doing some weird and sometimes terrible things. This thing has some grander purpose or agenda. I'm just going by the first season. I'm sure some people reading this have seen more. It seems to have a good budget and the actors all look familiar, although I don't know any of their names off the top of my head. I've seen them all in other to shows.

It's a little confusing at times, but not so much to make me lose interest. It definitely pulls me in.
