Twelve long legs and 10 countries later, The Amazing Race finally has a new set of champions!

And his next movie looks all set to do just that, as he attempts to bring alive on screen the life of a man who has done something which is seldom heard of by people – survive 2 nuclear bombings.

Jean Seberg circa 1965
‘Seberg’ screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse on Kristen Stewart ‘channeling Jean’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Jean Seberg circa 1965
At one point in “Seberg,” the new film about actress/activist Jean Seberg, a journalist asks the young star why she thinks so many people became obsessed with her after seeing “Breathless.” For the film’s screenwriters, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, it stemmed from that classic French New Wave film but it became an obsession upon learning of Seberg’s involvement with the Black Panther Party and her subsequent investigation by the FBI. As Waterhouse observes in an exclusive new interview with Gold Derby, Seberg was “so quintessentially American and yet she fits into that cool Parisian world as well. She’s just got this energy which is very, very difficult to define.” Watch the video interview with Shrapnel and Waterhouse above.

Jean Seberg circa 1965
Venice Film Review: Kristen Stewart in ‘Seberg’
Jean Seberg circa 1965
“Who is Jean Seberg?” a reporter asks the eponymous movie star midway through “Seberg,” attempting to close a puffy promotional interview for “Paint Your Wagon” with some semblance of personal insight. She doesn’t get to answer, as Seberg’s publicist swiftly calls time on the question: “Let’s just keep it about the movie,” he instructs. It’s one of many moments in Benedict Andrews’ slick, diverting portrait in which Seberg is shown to be treated as a product, a pawn or a patsy, handled by men in their own best interests rather than hers. And yet “Seberg” does something a little similar to that protective publicist: Every time it threatens to truly pierce the psyche of its subject, played with typically intriguing, elusory intelligence by Kristen Stewart, the more ordinary mechanics of the movie she’s serving get in the way.

In fairness, those mechanics are more movie-ish...

Alexander Skarsgård, Jason Clarke, and Keira Knightley in The Aftermath (2019)
‘The Aftermath’ Film Review: Keira Knightley Stars in a Post-War Romance Lacking in Passion
Alexander Skarsgård, Jason Clarke, and Keira Knightley in The Aftermath (2019)
From the wreckage of Allied-bombed Hamburg comes the post-World War II romantic triangle “The Aftermath,” and suddenly the problems of three little people amount to a hill of blah in this handsomely mounted, but hopelessly machine-pressed game of who are sacrificing more to escape the rubble of shattered desire and lingering grief.

Director James Kent’s adaptation of Rhidian Brook’s 2014 novel — about a ghost-like Germany, a broken British marriage, and the healing powers of a passionate thaw — has the unfortunate quality of a hot-blooded soap grafted onto rather than merged with a historical-political drama. The result exhibits little feel for how each genre’s particular needs might interfere with the other’s, or how the film’s trio of capable actors might be properly utilized.

When one considers the cinematic legacy of post-war Germany sagas alive to the colorful simmer of one-time enemies in close quarters — Billy Wilder’s “A Foreign Affair,...

Bipasha Basu: Fear losing relevance, not stardom

Stephan James at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Exclusive: Breakout actor Stephan James has just signed with CAA. Actor, sculptor, soldier, champ? ‘Homecoming’ may give Stephan James an Oscar boost for ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’
Stephan James at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Stephan James is campaigning for Best Actor Oscar honors for his breakthrough role in the upcoming drama “If Beale Street Could Talk.” That could be a challenge for an actor so young — he’ll only be 25-years-old on Oscar nominations morning, which would make him the seventh youngest nominee of all time. But if any voters are concerned about his experience, he has already been working for years, and they can also see him this fall in a second starring role in Amazon’s “Homecoming.”

The streaming series stars James as Walter Cruz, a soldier being treated for post traumatic stress disorder at a facility run by a possibly misguided therapist (Julia Roberts). The first season of the series premiered on November 2 and was acclaimed by critics, with James singled out for his “innate warmth,” “easy charisma” and seemingly “effortless” acting choices.

Stephan James at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Stephan James, who appeared in “Selma” and “Race,” admits he’s been a “little bit busy” balancing Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” with a starring role in Amazon’s podcast-to-tv adaptation “Homecoming,” opposite Julia Roberts.

Julia Roberts Featured in New Trailer for Amazon’s ‘Homecoming’
Amazon Prime Video released the first official trailer for its upcoming psychological thriller “Homecoming.”

Starring Julia Roberts, the show follows case worker turned waitress Heidi Bergman (Roberts) as she struggles to remember her time working at a facility that treats soldiers returning from war. “Race” actor Stephen James costars in the series, which was created and directed by “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.

The new trailer, which jumps between Heidi’s time at the facility and her life afterwards, reveals a dark, hospital-like setting, complete with a flurry of anxious interviews, fast paced walking and geometric shots. The camera work is also telling, switching between widescreen and vertical shots that seemingly accompany shifts in Heidi’s own mental state.

Other cast members include Bobby Cannavale (“The Station Agent”), Shea Wigham (“Take Shelter”), Jeremy Allen White (“Shameless”), Alex Karpovsky (“Girls”) and Dermot Mulroney (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”).

Anthony Mackie, Will Poulter, John Boyega, and Algee Smith in Detroit (2017)
‘Detroit’ Tops Limited Openers, Along With ‘Inconvenient Sequel’ and ‘Menashe’
Anthony Mackie, Will Poulter, John Boyega, and Algee Smith in Detroit (2017)
It’s a strong group of limited releases for a July weekend: Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power,” and the Yiddish-language “Menashe” all performed well, as did Sony Pictures Classics’ “Bigsby Bear.”

Opening

Detroit (Annapurna) – Metacritic: 86

$365,455 in 20 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $18,273

Kathryn Bigelow’s first film since “Zero Dark Thirty” is the first released by Megan Ellison’s production company through its own distributor. With reviews nearly as strong as “Zero” and “The Hurt Locker” but shifting to the home front in this recounting of the Detroit riots exactly 50 years ago, this opened in 10 markets ahead of its wide release this Friday. This is a tough subject, however well received, and Annapurna and its team has a challenge opening this outside of the festival/awards season and finding a wide swath of African-American and other upscale audiences.

Matt Damon in Downsizing (2017)
Alexander Payne’s ‘Downsizing,’ Starring Matt Damon, Will Open Venice Film Festival
Matt Damon in Downsizing (2017)
Look for Matt Damon to turn up on the Lido this year on August 30. That’s because he stars in writer-director Alexander Payne’s comedy “Downsizing,” which will open the Venice International Film Festival, in competition. And Paramount is putting its money down that Payne’s latest will come out of the fall festival season as one of the top contenders in this year’s Oscars race. Payne also directed Oscar contenders “Sideways” and “Nebraska.”

Damon plays an ordinary suburbanite who convinces his wife (Kristen Wiig) to go small– and buy into a richer lifestyle. So they get shrunk. Laura Dern, Christoph Waltz and Jason Sudeikis costar.

Paramount may well decide to take Darren Aronofsky’s “Mother!” to Venice as well, if not Italy resident George Clooney’s “Suburbicon.” Venice is the first of the fall festivals to launch the official awards season, with Telluride and Toronto on its heels.

Emily Blunt at an event for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011)
Edge of Tomorrow 2 Ends the Series, a Third Lead Will Be Introduced
Emily Blunt at an event for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011)
Earlier this month, while promoting his indie thriller The Wall, director Doug Liman teased that his highly-anticipated Edge of Tomorrow sequel will be called Live, Die, Repeat and Repeat, with both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt confirmed to return. The filmmaker still didn't know when production may begin on this sequel, but he also teased in another interview that there will be a third character that will "steal the movie." Here's what he had to say below.

"I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I'm like, 'No, a sequel should be smaller.' You did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don't need as much action, and in the case of Edge of Tomorrow, people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation. So we can do way more focused on...

Edge of Tomorrow 2 Title Revealed, Emily Blunt Returns
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Back in October, director Doug Liman teased that the follow-up to his hit action-thriller Edge of Tomorrow will serve as both a sequel and prequel to the original movie. While it still isn't known when this follow-up will get into production, the filmmaker teased during a recent interview that the movie is still happening, and that it will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat, instead of Edge of Tomorrow 2. Here's what the filmmaker had to say during a recent interview, revealing the new title.

"We have an amazing story! It's incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom Cruise is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we'll do it. But it's not an if, it's a when."

Domino Trailer: Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau Stars in Brian De Palma Thriller
Joseph Baxter Apr 5, 2019

Brian De Palma action thriller Domino will see Game of Thrones stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice Van Houten opposite one another.

Legendary director Brian De Palma, who amongst other iconic efforts, directed the 1996 inaugural film in the lucrative-as-ever Mission: Impossible film franchise, returns to the action thriller table with Domino. The film is headlined by a duo Game of Thrones cast members whose characters we can't wait to see share the screen on the series before its imminent end, namely the Kingslayer himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and the Red Witch herself, Carice Van Houten.

De Palma’s directorial offering Domino – not to be confused with the late Tony Scott’s 2005 Keira Knightley-starring bounty hunter biopic – is being distributed in the U.S. by Saban Films.

The most high-profile of the bunch would have to be Xavier Dolan's It's Only the End of the World, which is a likely contender at the Oscars this year in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It made the shortlist of nine films that will be considered at the Oscars, which also includes Germany's Toni Erdmann and Chile's Neruda.

Xavier Dolan Leads Canadian Screen Awards Nominations
The “Canadian Oscars” feature innovative nominees in both film and television.

Natalie Portman in Jackie (2016)
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

Doug Liman at an event for Great Directors (2009)
Edge of Tomorrow 2 Is a Sequel and a Prequel Says Director
Doug Liman at an event for Great Directors (2009)
Yes, Edge of Tomorrow 2 is happening, but will it be a prequel or a sequel? Well, according to director Doug Liman, it is going to be both. For any other franchise that might be confusing, but since Edge of Tomorrow had to do with time travel, that sort of kind of could make sense.

Doug Liman recently did an interview with Collider about his new scripted supernatural Vr series Invisible. The conversation eventually turned to Edge of Tomorrow 2 and the director had some interesting and fairly bold things to say about the upcoming sci-fi sequel. Here's how he explains it.

"That is the only sequel that I'm considering doing, and it's because first of all the story is so amazing-much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film-and second of all, it's a sequel that's a prequel."

There are a few things to note with that statement.

Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Will Re-Write The Sequel Rule Book, According To Doug Liman
All You Need is Kill, Live.Die.Repeat, Edge of Tomorrow – however you choose to identify Doug Liman’s brainy sci-fi, the 2014 actioner proved to be a pleasant surprise when it stormed into theaters two years ago. Featuring two cracking performances from Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, a mixture of clever writing and the movie’s time travel mechanic ensured that Liman and Christopher McQuarrie’s thriller found an audience to call its own.

And though it’s taken some time to find its feet – no thanks to the fine line between production budget and box office returns – an Edge of Tomorrow 2 is officially on the way. Writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (Race, Frankie & Alice) have been elected to pen the sequel’s screenplay, and though he stopped short of revealing too much, Liman told IGN that the action follow-up will “revolutionize” how the industry approaches sequels.

Gaming the Oscars: How Actors Hedge their Bets When They Submit as Lead or Supporting
Isabelle Huppert at an event for In Another Country (2012)
Acting careers begin with the endless judgments of auditions, the “we’ll be in touch,” the doubt of wondering if it will all work out. But for an Oscar-buzzed actor, all that anxiety fades away, and is replaced by three words: Lead or Supporting?

For talent, picking the right Academy category can make or break whether you win, or even get nominated. There’s also the delicate matter of which movie to campaign for if you’re lucky enough to have more than one.

Agents, managers, distributors, and Oscar campaign strategists lobby and advise the talent on which way to go, but the decision lies with the one who, should they be so lucky, has to show up at the endless public appearances that will follow.

Ego’s a major player here. George Clooney now has four Leading Actor nominations, but his only Oscar came when he swallowed his pride...

Atari Flashback Classics Volume 2 Review
Whenever a collection of classic games is released, I always find myself picking it up. Despite not usually having nostalgia for these retro packages (as my first console was the Genesis), I love learning more about the medium that I love, and it’s typically a good way to experience games that I missed out on. Typically this experience is hit-or-miss as for every one game I end up loving, there are usually a handful of titles that are only interesting to look at through a historical lens.

The latest retro video game collection comes in the form of Atari Flashback Classics Volume 2. This $20 package features 50 games in total, with 9 being arcade games, and 41 Atari 2600-era titles. Since the games are the main reason why anyone would pick this up, and there are way too many of them to touch on individually, here’s the full list of arcade titles: Asteroids,...

As ‘Jackie’ and ‘Colossal’ Lure Buyers, Toronto Turns Into a Waiting Game
Natalie Portman in Jackie (2016)
Pablo Larrain’s “Jackie” roused what’s been a sleepy market at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. Starring Natalie Portman as the former First Lady, the film covers a four-day period that begins just before the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and Portman turns in an Oscar-worthy performance that received a standing ovation at the film’s screening Sunday.

Fox Searchlight has first and last look on the movie, but distributors also understood to be in the hunt include A24. EuropaCorp, French mogul Luc Besson’s U.S.-based upstart led by former Universal co-chairman Marc Shmuger, made initial inquiries but stopped short of a bid. CAA and Insiders are handling the sale.
