After foiling a bomb attack at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics security guard Richard Jewell is an instant hero. However when the FBI leaks to the media that he is a suspect in the bombing his life becomes a nightmare.
Slate reported that during the period in which the real Richard Jewell was fodder for ridicule from many comedians and commentators, late-night host Jay Leno mocked Jewell by comparing him to "the guy who whacked Nancy Kerrigan" (meaning Tonya Harding's erstwhile "bodyguard" Shawn Eckardt). Paul Walter Hauser, who plays Richard Jewell in this movie, also played Shawn Eckardt in I, Tonya (2017). Both are movies about crimes related to the Olympics.
I'm sorry the world has gone insane.
About 43 minutes in Richard Jewell, in his bedroom, is on the phone speaking to attorney Watson Bryant regarding Bryant's assistance and possible representation on a book deal. A reflected circle of light from the filming crew passes over the chest, right arm of Paul Walter Hauser and then appears behind him on the wall over the headboard before exiting in the upper left hand corner of the shot.
