  • This show is pretty good. I think I got around halfway through before dropping it. Nanana's Buried Treasure has a fun cast, great voice actors, great animation and art, and an interesting premise. The fatal flaw is in the pacing.

This show tries to be a mystery-type story surrounded around solving puzzles. The thing about mysteries is that its best to frame them in a way that can easily be followed by the audience so that we can try to solve them along side the characters. The problem is that the pacing is way too fast, and on top of that the writers are trying to also create a very mysterious air. You can leave certain backstories and reasons behind events ambiguous, but the situations that are being shown and have characters interacting with need to be framed in a way that the audience can follow or figure out on their own.

Another thing that turned me away from this show is that its only 11 episodes long, and will never be continued, and apparently you never find out who Nanana's killer is and I don't want to deal with that kind of frustration.

Overall, this is a pretty good show that I'd probably recommend. Its fun, funny, and energetic. If you don't mind being pretty confused during the puzzle scenes and then feeling like an idiot when the "Master Detective" solves it all with information you weren't given, then go ahead and watch this.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Set on an artificial island this story follows school boy Juugo Yama who discovers that his room is haunted by the ghost of Nanana Ryūgajō. She isn't like other ghosts; she is solid and sits around playing video games and demanding pudding. She can't leave the room though and wants Juugo to discover who murdered her ten years previously. Before her death she had acquired a collection of treasures; these are hidden around the island and each grants its owner special powers. Juugo sets about looking for these treasures, often followed by self-proclaimed master detective Tensai and her assistant Daruku; a boy who is usually seen wearing a maid uniform. They aren't the only ones after the treasure; the school's Adventure Club is also after it and they present a danger to Juugo.

This is a rather fun series; the premise is interesting and the main characters are all fun to watch. There are plenty of amusing moments as well as some tense ones where it looks as though our protagonist is in real danger. The character designs are all distinctive and look pretty good; as do the backgrounds. The 3D animation used in the traps looks pretty good although it does stand out against the other animation. The series does unfortunately have one major weakness; that is its ending or rather its lack of one. I can only hope another series will be made later as the final episode provides almost no closure; we don't learn who killed Nanana and few or the treasures have been discovered; it felt like a season finale rather than a series finale. Still it was a fun series and I'd recommend it. I gave it seven stars but with a proper ending I suspect I'd have given it eight.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles.
  • It's a great show, but it only covers the beginning of the story. There are 12 light novels, but they have never been translated and might never be. I would pay a lot to get my hands on full translations of the series
