The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair.
The airplane that Barry Seal was flying throughout most of the movie (officially registered N164HH, and appeared with this registration in the movie), crashed on 11 Sept. 2015 on the last day of filming, causing 2 fatalities.

In one scene, Barry was in the hanger near the plane and had a cut below his left eye which appeared and disappeared in several scenes.
Among the last lines of the credits, the sentence "Yes, we know it's not El Salvador" is shown which is a reference to a joke about mistaking El Salvador for Nicaragua on the map. In fact, the country on the map was neither El Salvador nor Nicaragua - it was Honduras, hence the line in the credits.
