The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair.
The airplane that Barry Seal was flying all the time (officially registered as N164HH, also seen in the movie on the tail of the airplane) crashed in real life (11 Sept. 2015) on the last day of the movie shoots causing 2 fatalities.

When Lucy's brother is taking the suitcase out of the back of his car, the rear windscreen is wet with raindrops. The scene has a brief cut-away and then returns to the car where the rear windscreen is now completely dry.
Among the last lines of the credits, the sentence "Yes, we know it's not El Salvador" is shown which is a reference to a joke about mistaking El Salvador for Nicaragua on the map. In fact, the country on the map was neither El Salvador nor Nicaragua - it was Honduras, hence the line in the credits.
