The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair.
The airplane that Barry Seal was flying all the time (officially registered as N164HH, also seen in the movie on the tail of the airplane) crashed in real life (11 Sept. 2015) on the last day of the movie shoots causing 2 fatalities.

In the beginning of the movie, when Berry is waiting in line during taxi as no. 11 for take off, there is a shot of the overhead panel where the blue "ground power available" light is on. This light can only be on when the aircraft is on the parking stand with the Ground Power Unit (a generator for planes) connected and running, never when taxiing or in the air.
The 2013 Universal Studios logo rewinds into the older 1963-1990 logo and the 1996 Imagine Entertainment logo rewinds into the 1988-1996 logo at the beginning. Since Cross Creek Pictures was founded in 2009, their logo rewinds into a miniature train with the company name written on it with the normal logo displayed in a retro 1970s style.
