The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair.

Towards the end of the film, when Barry is making the video tapes in the motel room, an exterior shot of the room and the motel in general show electronic key card locks on the doors. While mechanical key card locks had existed for a few years by the time this scene takes place, the digital mag stripe-based locks seen in the film had not yet been developed.
Among the last lines of the credits, the sentence "Yes, we know it's not El Salvador" is shown which is a reference to a joke about mistaking El Salvador for Nicaragua on the map. In fact, the country on the map was neither El Salvador nor Nicaragua - it was Honduras, hence the line in the credits.
