Denis Villeneuve is definitely interested in making a Dune trilogy but it appears that Warner Bros. may steer away the director from such an idea. According to reports, WB is planning to release the successfully running Dune: Part Two on streaming platforms at least by April 15th. Villeneuve vehemently opposed Dune‘s dual release in theaters and HBO Max in 2020. The new move may not make the director a very happy man.
Denis Villeneuve and Zendaya on the sets of Dune
Dune: Part Two has so far collected $252.4 million at the domestic and $373.7 million at the international box office, according to Box Office Mojo. The trend of the numbers shows that the film is not going to slow down anytime soon at the box office.

Much like “Road House” philosopher-turned-bouncer James Dalton, Jake Gyllenhaal considers all sides to an argument.
Gyllenhaal is ready for the debut of Doug Liman’s remake of the 1989 bruiser fave, but there has been a degree of controversy about the forthcoming thriller. Liman, whose previous work includes “Go,” “The Bourne Identity” and “American Made,” has gone to war with Amazon for not releasing his “Road House” in theaters. He penned an open letter recently, and in it, Liman wrote he’d be boycotting the movie’s premiere at Austin’s SXSW festival. “Amazon is hurting way more than just me and my film. If I don’t speak up about Amazon, who will?” he wrote.
In his note, Liman laid out that he signed with MGM with the anticipation of making a theatrically released film. Amazon later bought MGM and, despite Liman’s report that the movie is testing through the roof,...

Tom Cruise may have just found his next non-"Mission: Impossible" movie, and his decision seems to mark a turning point some of us have been waiting years to see.
According to a report from Deadline, Cruise has agreed to star in a new movie from "Birdman" and "The Revenant" director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, which has Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment in negotiations to distribute and produce. Iñárritu wrote the script with Sabina Berman, as well as the writing team of Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, who co-wrote 2014's "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," but plot details are being kept under lock and key at the moment. The only thing confirmed at this time is that it will be an original story. (Apologies to anyone hoping to see what an Iñárritu-directed "Edge of Tomorrow 2" might look like.)

Monday Am: Turns out that high holy day of NFL yesterday which resulted in the Chiefs and the 49ers heading to the Super Bowl did pull guys away from Amazon MGM’s The Beekeeper. While the Jason Statham Miramax title did win Saturday over Paramount’s Mean Girls, $3.4M to $3.27M, Sunday belonged to the Plastics which saw the teen musical movie pull ahead with a third weekend of $6.9M to Beekeeper‘s $6.7M.
Mean Girls‘ Sunday was $1.7M, -48% from Saturday, while Beekeeper‘s take was $1.48M. Worldwide, Beekeeper crossed $100M ($41.5M domestic), while Mean Girls stands at $83M ($60.4M from domestic).
This weekend, Apple Original Films’ Matthew Vaughn directed all-star spy ensemble, Argylle, looks to open in the teens. More on that later.

Editors note: From his breakout in Swingers to The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, American Made and his upcoming film with Tom Cruise they plan to shoot in outer space, Doug Liman’s films have a kinetic energy. That made the director perfect for Road House, an edgier version of the 1989 beloved B movie that starred Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch, Sam Elliott and Ben Gazzara. Jake Gyllenhaal, who got back in similar chiseled mode he displayed in the boxing movie Southpaw, plays the bouncer who has never lost a fight. Liman feels his movie, which has been selected as SXSW’s opening-night film, has been Ko’d by Amazon MGM Studios with a Prime Video release, and he’s not taking it lying down. In this guest column, he explains what happened, why he feels betrayed, and why this is a cautionary tale for a theatrical...

The 75-year-old first joined the country-gospel group in 1973, following his departure from the Keystones. Bonsall recorded dozens of albums with the Oak Ridge Boys and sang on such country staples as “American Made,” “Bobbie Sue,” “Trying to Love Two Women,” and the iconic “Elvira.” Bonsall was a captivating presence on the group’s numerous tours, high-stepping and fist-pumping his way across the stage. For only the second time since mid-June, Suits is not the No. 1 title in Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
That honor belongs to Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, which snagged the top spot for the week of Oct. 9-15. Writer-director Mike Flanagan’s spin on the titular Edgar Allan Poe story (and several others by the author) drew 1.23 billion minutes of viewing, edging out the 1.13 billion for Suits.
The latter series continued its months-long run above the billion-minute mark, however, and has now compiled almost 44.4 billion minutes (about 739.8 million hours) of viewing on Netflix and Peacock since it first hit the rankings in June. Nielsen notes that viewing of Suits’ ninth and final season, which is only available on Peacock, accounted for 6 percent of the weekly tally (about 67.6 million minutes) — the highest percentage for those episodes since the other eight seasons debuted on Netflix.

Looking at PVOD and Netflix charts this week reveals some significant findings.
The just-debuted “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” tops all lists in its first week of release as assumed. That comes 90 days after its release. Did theaters benefit? Not really.
Netflix has a top 10 with eight studio titles, six from Universal, including #1 “Tammy” with Melissa McCarthy. But the big news here? “Fair Play,” last week’s #1 and a $20 million Sundance acquisition for the streamer, dropped off the list after only eight days.
Both suggest a result that could influence future decisions. For “Reckoning,” the hope was that delaying its initial home release 90 days would extend its theatrical run. That didn’t happen.
In the 30 days up to its PVOD release, it grossed less than $2 million in theaters. This year, only a handful of films have had a 60 days or longer window, most at close to that time.

Cross Creek Pictures has acquired “The Sessions,” a new screenplay from writer and former Paramount Pictures executive Tom 8. Hayes.
The screenplay is based on true events, telling a story set amidst the New York City jazz scene of the mid-1950s. It focuses on the relationship between musical genius Miles Davis and the retiring Jewish optometrist-turned-sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder, the pioneering creator of new recording methods. Tom Cruise loves chucking himself out of planes, but did you know he can actually fly them? The "Mission: Impossible" star has been a qualified pilot since 1994 and owns several aeronautic vehicles, including a P-51 Mustang that popped up in "Top Gun: Maverick." As he once told Hello magazine (via The Netline), "All I ever wanted to be was a pilot or an actor," affirming that he very much shares Pete Mitchell's need for speed (which should come as a shock to literally no one on the planet). But it's not just the "Top Gun" movies; 2017's "American Made" likewise saw Cruise hopping into a cockpit for a real-life crime story that cements the adage, "Truth is stranger than fiction."

“The Equalizer 3” (Sony) debuted on PVOD at $19.99 with #1 placement at both iTunes and Vudu. It’s #5 at Google Play, which seems to be lagging worse than usual; its titles haven’t changed in four days, which likely affects some rankings.
Meantime, “Fair Play,” the relationship thriller that premiered to acclaim at Sundance last January, is an immediate #1 at Netflix. The streamer paid $20 million for worldwide rights, a bargain against the production costs for other Netflix Originals.

Monday Am: It wasn’t a tie as many had Nun 2 and A Haunting in Venice far apart at the box office yesterday, but the New Line horror pic’s second weekend really did win in the end with a $14.5M take, -56%, to the Kenneth Branagh pic’s opening of $14.3M.
Nun 2‘s domestic stands at $56.3M, putting the Conjuring universe of movies’ global box office at $742M stateside, $2.17 billion global.
Nun 2 ‘s Sunday was higher than Haunting‘s $3.95M to $3.4M.
Comscore called this past weekend at $62.4M, which is the second worst Ytd. Don’t expect any great miracles this weekend with Lionsgate/Millenium’s long-in-the-tooth, Expand4bles opening. The third film back in 2014 opened to $15.8M and finaled at $39.3M domestic.
Sunday Am: It looks like Hercule Poirot doesn’t have a prayer at winning the box office this weekend, with Kenneth Branagh’s A Haunting in Venice losing No.

Tom Cruise, like most actors, has been regularly promoting his blockbuster movies overseas for years. But although it’s a common tradition among stars now, Cruise believed that he was the actor who normalized it.

When he is taken in by police after a violent incident, Jones’ character gets a psychiatric assessment from prison psychiatrist Evelyn (Past Lives actress Jojo T. Gibbs) and tells her his life story. The film is...

Sunday Am Writethrough after Saturday Am update: As the Hollywood labor stoppage continues, the 2023 box office rally rages on, as domestic box office soars past $6 billion, +22% over the same January-August period a year ago. This weekend for all movies stands at an estimated $178M. This is the fourth time in box office history to have four movies cross $25M; the last time was Thanksgiving weekend 2018.
We always knew this weekend would beat the first frame of August a year ago ($92M), and that’s happening at +94%. But the current Friday-Sunday is also kicking the first weekend of August 2019’s $148.99M by +20%, and that’s when Hobbs & Shaw ruled the chart.
Barbie remains box office queen bee with $53M in weekend 3, after a $17M Friday and $20M Saturday. By Eod, Barbie is roughly $40M shy from passing the half billion mark at the domestic box office, with her gross set to stand at $459.4M.

Tom Cruise is, to put it lightly, notable for his odd beliefs. While undeniably electric on screen, the veteran superstar actor projects a strikingly strange image away from the silver screen. It might not be an exaggeration when some refer to him as the weirdest celebrity in Hollywood.
The Top Gun star is often odd in interviews. He comes off as intensely strange and subservient to Scientology top brass, going by reports from his ex-wives about his odd behavior in private. But one of his strangest habits might be his most harmless.
Tom Cruise has spent decades as one of the top action stars in Hollywood
Tom Cruise never phones it in. Best Tc movies:

Exclusive: We’ve heard from sources that Jason Seagraves has exited Cavalry Media as their SVP of Development.
Seagraves is the second executive to leave the management and production company following co-founder Dana Brunetti, which we first reported.
Seagraves, I understand, has both Brunetti and Cavalry Media co-founder Keegan Rosenberger’s approval to transition to a producorial role on his projects, one being the teen drama series Motorheads which is set up at Amazon Studios with John A. Norris as showrunner.
Motorheads is a coming-of-age ensemble drama, set in blue collar steel town that’s trying to reinvent itself. The show follows as its denizens navigate the hierarchy and rules of high school, while others are running from a dark past looking for new beginnings.

Rami Malek is circling his next lead role in the thriller "Amateur" from 20th Century Studios. Deadline reports that James Hawes — who directed all six episodes of the first season of "Slow Horses," the Gary Oldman-led Apple TV+ series — has also boarded the project. Right now, it's still in the development stages, with Malek in line to executive produce alongside Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson.
The plot of "Amateur" reportedly "follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them." The CIA isn't having any of that, and "when it becomes clear they won't act due to conflicting internal priorities," the cryptographer takes matters into his own hands and "blackmails the agency into training him."
Malek is no stranger to thriller territory, having starred in "Mr. Robot" for four seasons before the show ended in 2019. Since winning...

Exclusive: Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films have closed a deal to finance and produce a feature-length version of Power Signal — the sci-fi short from Oscar Boyson that had its world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Shorts section last Friday.
The short stars Babs Olusanmokun (Dune) as a NYC delivery worker who has a close encounter with an otherworldly life form after accepting a degenerate customer’s bizarre proposition. Boyson directed the pic, also starring Angela Sarafyan, Tennessee King and Will Brill, from his and Erin DeWitt’s script, also producing with Jordan Drake, Alex Coco, and production companies Object & Animal and Hayden 5.
Like the short, the feature adaptation is described as a NYC-set sci-fi Western in which e-biking delivery workers are the cowboys. Further plot details are under wraps.

A new documentary about the explosive sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh will debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Veteran feature director Doug Liman is directing, marking his documentary debut.

Tom Cruise will “hopefully” become “the first civilian to do a spacewalk” outside of the International Space Station when he blasts off to space to shoot a new action movie with director Doug Liman. Donna Langley, the head of Universal Pictures, teased as much during a recent BBC interview. Universal is backing the Cruise space project, which reportedly carries a budget in the 200 million range. While it was already known the movie would shoot scenes on the Iss, Langley said the plan is to also have Cruise perform a spacewalk.
“Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan,” Langley confirmed to the BBC. “We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.

If you think the price of early-access premium VOD movies from major studios is steep, this will make your eyes roll.
For the launch of “18 & Over,” an indie horror film starring, produced by and co-created by Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”), the producers are granting an exclusive two-month streaming window to fans who buy one of 10,000 limited-edition NFTs with character art based on the movie.
The price of entry? The NFTs will go on sale for 263 each on Aug 5 — which, if they all sell out, would work out to a 2.63 million total haul. Then, starting Aug. 12, each Nft owner will be able to watch the “collector’s cut” of the film for a two-month period via a private link.

As a movie — as craft, as popcorn entertainment — Top Gun: Maverick is far superior to its progenitor, 1986’s groundbreaking blockbuster Top Gun. The exciting aerial sequences are grounded, no pun intended, by decades-later drama that is mostly about melancholy regret. The nostalgia that abounds — the characters are steeped in it, as is the audience, via numerous callbacks to the first movie — is about the bittersweetness of passing time, of getting older. There is a resignation here to decline that is not only individual but generational, national, maybe even hinting at the civilizational.
There’s a scene early on in which Tom Cruise’s hotshot US Navy fighter pilot is told by someone a generation older than him that he should be an admiral by now, or a senator. How has his Pete “Maverick” Mitchell not moved on from flying cool planes? Because he doesn’t want to move on. He...

I figured I should probably watch 1986’s Top Gun before my press screening of its impending sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Often it’s the case with classic films — I use the phrase loosely here — I’ve not seen that I’m embarrassed to admit that. I can’t say that’s true here, but I am mystified as to how I’ve managed to avoid this movie for almost 40 years. I’m not sure how I missed it when it was new. I mean! Summer of ’86, when this was released, I was 17 years old, and I was going to the movies a lot. It was the season of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Manhattan Project, Aliens, The Fly, and Stand by Me. All was geeky GenX glory. Maybe there were just too many movies. Strange to think that could be it, when there are so many more vying for our attention now.

There are many directors who like to know exactly where they're going with a film before kicking off production, planning things out to the tiniest detail. Doug Liman, however, is not one of them.
"I'm really interested [in] going on an adventure, and going to parts unknown," Liman told /Film in 2017. He was talking about what led him to direct "American Made," a movie based on the hard-to-believe exploits of real-life commercial jet pilot-turned CIA and Colombian drug cartel smuggler Barry Seal. Liman also talked about "Edge of Tomorrow," an earlier film he'd collaborated on with "American Made" star Tom Cruise. "On 'Edge of Tomorrow,' we discovered that...

Exclusive: Oscar and Emmy winner Kathy Bates, two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich and Lewis Pullman have signed on to star in Thelma, an indie directed by two-time Emmy nom Ken Kwapis.
Thelma recounts the true story of the mother of John Kennedy Toole (Pullman), the Pulitzer Prize winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces. Toole died by suicide before finding a home for his masterpiece, and his mother Thelma (Bates) made it her life’s mission, through outrageous gamesmanship, to see the book published. She eventually succeeded in getting the manuscript into the hands of writer Walker Percy (Malkovich), who became the novel’s champion. It would be published in 1980, eleven years after Ken’s death, thereafter becoming a widely celebrated cult classic.
Black List screenwriter Andrew Farotte penned the original screenplay.

Domhnall Gleeson will star opposite Steve Carell in the upcoming FX limited series “The Patient.”
In addition, Linda Emond, Laura Niemi, and Andrew Leeds have also joined the show’s cast. Chris Long has come onboard as executive producer and will also direct the first two episodes. Kevin Bray and Gwyneth Horder-Payton will also direct episodes of the 10-episode series.
In the half-hour series, a psychotherapist (Carell) finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer (Gleeson) with an unusual request: curb his homicidal urges. But unwinding the mind of this man while also dealing with the waves of his own repressed troubles creates a journey perhaps as treacherous as his captivity.
“The Patient” was originally ordered to series at FX in October. Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg will write and executive produce the series, with Carell executive producing in addition to starring. Caroline Moore and Victor Hsu will also executive produce along with Long.
