  • You have to give this series a bit of time and the characters will slowly grow on you. In the initial few episodes the series focused on Denis Leary who plays the lead singer Johnny Rock for the over the hill gang rock band named the Heathens. He discovers that he has a daughter who also wants to be a rock star so who better to learn the ropes then from her dad, the legendary Johnny Rock. Gradually the series expands and each of the Heathens band members develops a personality of their own.

Johnny Rock's lead guitarist and song writer is Flash, played superbly by John Corbett. Episodes 5 and 6 are especially enlightening as the group seeks psychiatric help in episode 5 and in episode 6 the story line revolves around what tattoos mean to each of the group members.

Denis Leary admits to being an egotistical drug addicted rock star which is what it takes to stay on top of his game and keep his band together after so many years of a rock music legends top ten drought. Mrs. Shullivan and I have grown to enjoy the series episodes and with only four episodes of season one still remaining we are optimistic that the series will survive for a season 2. If you recall Denis Leary's previous hit series Rescue Me took a little bit of time before developing a dedicated audience and then went on for seven seasons.

I have upgraded my original rating from a 5 to a 7 and I took the time to write this review to tell other viewers to stick it out and you will find that the series will grow on you as it has on us. I am a bit worried though of what I am learning about the rock lingo such as avoiding "dog balls" by having surgery on my privates. What a hoot!

A fun series with great music and hilarious characters.

Denis Leary is fun in the role of Johnny Rock, but the other characters are just as fun. The music is great, and Elizabeth Gillies is a great choice for the role of Gigi.

A bunch of fun performances, lots of good music and hilarious situations. A good mix of comedy, drama and music.

It's a real shame that the show didn't continue any further, as it's really interesting and it would be great to watch these fun characters and listen to great music for at east a few more seasons.

This show reminded me of some better times, when music was better and TV shows were fun and charming.
  • I loved season 1, and the first episode of season 2. Now the language and excessive sexual nonsense in season 2 episodes 2 & 3 are just plain unnecessary. Me being in my early 50's and having a very bad potty mouth I still find it a waste of time and just worthless. My daughter is 22 and the same as I am in being a potty mouth and feels the same way.

Get back to the way season 1 was going and stop the excessive sexual innuendo's and acts and over the edge language. You can use cussing but Christ season 2 episode 3 was ridiculously foul and unnecessary. I truly hope they change this before they start losing viewers.
  • Halfway the first season of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, I can say I am absolutely in love with this show. I love how the series is a hilarious, cynical comedy about the music industry, but also a funny and heart warming family comedy.

On top of that there's this great music that makes this show extra special. I have had Liz Gillies' songs from this show, like 'Animal' and 'New York 2015' on repeat for days now.

The cast is excellent. Everyone has great chemistry together. The fact that they had lots of room for improv gave them the chance to show just how talented they all are.

The shows mix of comedy, drama and music is a perfect fit for Liz Gillies. She has an amazing talent for all and for me is the star of SDRR.

The only downside I can find is that the episodes are so short. I would love to see longer episodes in a next season, so we can enjoy more of this great show.
  • Denis Leary plays Johnny Rock - a manipulative, egomaniacal, Washed-up, womanizing, drug-addict rock legend who is loathed by other musicians and particularly his former band-mates. He continually attempts to revive his career and vents about the excesses of the music industry that are holding him back.

Formerly the front-man of the Heathens - a much loved late 1980s/early 1990s band Johnny has gradually ended up further back in his career than where he started as the series begins. His ultimate low-point comes when he puts the moves on Gigi (Elizabeth Gillies) a woman young enough to be his daughter who actually turns out to be his daughter.

The hits keep on coming as she coerces him into re-forming the Heathens to serve as her own vehicle to pop stardom. Johnny is still on board to write songs with Flash (John Corbett) the former band-mate who despises him. But Gigi, who turns out to be ten times the singer her father ever was has displaced him as Heathens lead vocalist.

Johnny does his level best to be a father to his long-lost daughter whilst scheming to feed his substance abuse and to regain the momentum his career once had. Diplomacy remains far from his strong suit and as self-appointed arbiter/guardian of rock 'n' roll's legacy he pulls no punches (Like Leary's stand-up act).

A music historian with impeccable accuracy for someone whose mind has been blasted on booze and hard drugs for decades, his scathing criticisms and prescient observations strike with the accuracy of a stealth bomber. The show itself stages epic send-ups of rock star excess right down to the minutiae of the song-writing process which are absolutely side-splitting.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is nothing less than a brilliant satire of the music industry. The opportunities for mining a raunchier/grittier kind of humour that prime-time network TV won't touch make it a perfect sitcom for cable TV.

Denis Leary hasn't lost any of his bite as a writer and this show is a perfect outlet.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I can't quite pinpoint the reason I continue to watch Denis Leary's FX Network show "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll". The premise is a bit clichéd (What? A rock musician finds out he has kid he didn't know about?) and the show is purposefully titillating to keep the predominantly male audience interested. But as a former rock and alternative radio DJ who was on the air from the mid-80s to the mid-2000s, I'm definitely drawn to tales surrounding punk, rock and indie music.

Leary plays Johnny Rock, the lead singer of a 90s rock band called The Heathens. The quick and dirty summary of the band's dissolution is a pretty familiar one - they imploded after recording their first album because the lead singer had slept with every band member's wife and/or girlfriend.

Now 51, Johnny is still a hard partying musician pining for fame and fortune. During a night out clubbing he meets his 21-year-old daughter who is also chasing the Rock God dream.

Johnny's gorgeous, talented daughter Gigi brings The Heathens back together, renames them The Assassins and embarks on her own journey as the lead singer of this extremely dysfunctional group of musicians.

What I like about the show:

Elizabeth Gillies has a no-bull$#^* outer confidence that hides a typically neurotic 21-year-old inner monologue. It's usually a toss-up between Gillies and Leary for the best lines in each episode.

Denis Leary's snarky portrayal of a bitter, almost-been rock star stuck in the past is spot-on. I've met guys just like him. Well, I've actually met Leary and he's a lot like Johnny, except for the almost-been thing. He's extremely successful as a comedian, actor and writer.

The dialogue is quick, realistic and often spit-take hilarious.

The show does a great job of showcasing the varied stereotypes everyone in the music business has encountered, including record producers who are not actually "on fleek", aging musicians and actors who are obsessed with their failing looks, ridiculous over-the-top hipsters and gold-digging backstage bimbos.

It's super entertaining to see the occasional cameos of famous actors and musicians who are often playing a crazy version of themselves à la Neil Patrick Harris in the Harold and Kumar movies.

I'm enjoying the burgeoning relationship between Johnny and Gigi. Their inappropriate father-daughter conversations are like a car wreck you don't want to see, but look anyway. And yet you can feel their affection for each other.

What I don't like about the show:

Every woman in the show is hypersexualized. I've yet to see a shot with one of the female leads that doesn't feature some prominent cleavage (at the very least). Their talent takes a back seat to their f*#^ability. Hey, not all women in the rock music biz dress like hookers and simulate coitus while on stage.

The timeline and punk-esque vibe developed for The Heathens feels off. The show's intro clip displays band images that look more like scenes from CBGB in the 70s than scenes from the era that gave birth to grunge. Also, if Johnny Rock is 50- 51 today, he was 26-27 in 1992. That's kinda old to be in a punk rock band getting record company traction. To someone like me who was playing alternative/rock/punk records in 1992 and met plenty of bands on their way up, the years and band persona just don't quite fit together right.

I don't think making fun of the fat drummer with a food obsession is that humorous.

The music isn't that good. I wish they'd spend the money for the rights to use great songs that fit the flashbacks and current scenes (But not Lady Gaga!). And I wish they would get someone to write better original songs.

All that being said, I'll definitely continue to watch the show. I'm a sucker for rock and roll movies/TV shows - plus I look forward to Denis and Elizabeth's snappy dialogue, the humorous appearances of famous actors/musicians and to see where the storyline goes.
  • After watching the first episodes of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll I can say that this show has stolen my heart. The series is a comedy mixed with drama and music that at first looks like to be about an old rock band trying to get together but basically is most about the relations between the band members.

The casting is very well done, the chemistry is between the actors is great. Elizabeth Gillies who plays Gigi, makes the most impression in both acting and singing. She is a true talent and a great find by producer and actor Denis Leary.

The music part of the series is what makes it stand out from all other shows about bands and fame. All music was recorded live and this you see back in the episodes: it makes it look like you're watching a live concert. The live music makes it so much more believable and brings us back to a time where we had real music instead of auto tune. Gillies voice is phenomenal and shows that real music still is possible.
  • Still for about two years now have been watching the FX series "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" and the title sure does live up to it's name as the series has plenty of just that in it! The story is pretty simple Denis Leary is Johnny a former rock superstar who's now middle aged and his fame has faded however he's got back in the game by finding his old rock band members and guess what talent runs in the genes as John's daughter Gigi(Elizabeth Gillies)is an upcoming star in the making! Thru it all this group of people just don't care as they do a little bit of it a lot of drinking goes on bring on the whiskey(also look for a good supporting turn in the series from John Corbett)and it's wild and sexy as plenty of sex like threesomes and lust making is shown and good scenes have been shown of women in very sexy colored bras! Overall this series isn't everyone's cup of tea still it's a feel good rock pleasure of a time that involves the vice of you guessed it "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll"
  • Elizabeth Gillies is so amazing! She is really the star of this show. She is best in both comedy and drama. She has great chemistry with Denis Leary. The father-daughter scenes between Leary and Gillies are my favorite.

Elizabeth Gillies is not only a very talented actress but also an amazing singer. All the songs in the show are live and there are not many who can pull that of. But Elizabeth Gillies can and does a fantastic job.

The episodes are really short but full with great punchlines and hilarious scenes. I really laugh out loud watching this show.

I hope there will be more seasons to come because 10 episodes is way too short and I would love to hear more of the Heathens' music.
  • Warning: Spoilers
It starts slow, meaning it's a bit hammy in the first few episodes, it's basically all over the place. Nevertheless (and it's a big nevertheless), by episode 4/5 it really starts to find its feet. The storytelling becomes more cohesive & the actors begin to fill the shoes of the characters they inhabit.

I like that the show takes a dig at the vapid state of the current music industry & in one episode it clearly attacks the misogynistic exploitation of women in mainstream pop. Essentially it reveals there is more to this show than cheap giggles.

There's not much more to say than the above. If you can get past the first few episodes you'll really start to enjoy the show.

I do hope that now the show has found itself it isn't cancelled.
  • Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll has the potential to be an interesting show about the reunion of a popular 90s rock band and a comeback of their leader, both in music and in personal life (as a father). However, instead it's a mess of references to older bands and a confused show not sure if it's a drama, comedy, black comedy, or what exactly it is.

The premise is interesting enough: Leary plays lead singer/songwriter and founder of The Heathens Johnny Rock. The band broke up after only one album, which many consider to be the shortest career for a band in history.

25 years later, Rock is struggling. His only viable options are performing at nostalgia events, being the front man for a tribute band, or creating an album full of cover songs. A new chance at success shows up in his illegitimate daughter Gigi's arrival. She creates a proposition for Rock: he can work behind the scenes as main songwriter for her new band and in return he'll get the fame and fortune that eluded him the first time through his daughter's career. Reuniting the band, they try to come up with new material for Gigi, in an age when hip hop and pop have the popularity once given to rock.

Interesting enough premise, but the execution struggles. This is suppose to be a band very popular in the 90s and the early influence of Nirvana. So then why does their music hark more back to the classic rock of Rolling Stones and Zeppelin? Also, so far the story lines are somewhat clunky and not exactly sure what this is. Tributes to rock have been done better by Almost Famous, School of Rock, and High Fidelity to name a few, and this one utilizes old clichés and overused elements that have been used over and over again in this format.

I'll give it a couple more episodes to see if any of these things can be ironed out, but right now this show is exactly what many people think of rock these days: a dinosaur relying on overused clichés and stereotypes. As a rock fan, I know that's not completely true, but this show seems to play on that element.

I really loved Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll! I'm kinda sad the first season is over already. The best things about this show? First, Elizabeth Gillies as Gigi. She is a great talent, charming and beautiful. She portrays the different sides of Gigi very good and is a fantastic singer. Second, the music of this show is great. There are some really awesome songs like Animal and Complicated. Best is that they sing everything live on the episodes. Third, the story is hilarious. It is a great comedy, fast and rough and I laughed out aloud a lot watching it. Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll absolutely deserves a second season! I hope we get one next year with even more great music.
  • Good points...

Sharp, witty dialogue. Good chemistry among the cast. I'm Scottish, so I like the swearing, but it needs to be more creative.

    Negatives...

Leary's character is pretty much the saddest most emasculated man I've ever seen. He's constantly bitched at and he's been henpecked so much he probably tastes like chicken. It's witty, in a 'downtrodden hero, oh woe is me' kind of way, and the dialogue distracts the less perceptive from how sad he is. He's old, but even autumnal tree's can grow a pair of fruits, would be nice to see him do the same.

    Bonus nudges...

The daughter is hotter than a Greggs sausage roll just out the oven. She's aw that, and a bag of chips.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Comedies about imaginary rock musicians always come off as feeling inauthentic and hacky. They invariably have crap songs that in no way, shape or form reflect the style and alleged talent of the imaginary band we've been hearing about throughout the script. They always misjudge time frames and cultural trends in terms of the backstory. And they choose pop cultural references that show the writer's ignorance about the subject matter. The biggest problem with these comedies is that they at once want to use the cool factor of the rock world but deflate that by making the characters pathetic dorks. Sadly, the uber talented Mr. Leary's attempt is no exception. There are constantly references and bits of dialogue that remind us how out of touch the writers here were with reality. Swing and a miss.

If you want to see a project that authentically depicts the rock world, see "Almost Famous." It is no sitcom but the laughs that are there are genuine as well as the story and characters. That film is worth your time. This show is not.
  • I love this new show! It is truly a great show with comedy, music and drama, almost too much to contain in just a half hour episodes. I understand that for some people the show seems too rough, but give it a chance because there's much more to this show than at first glance. The cast is very well chosen, they all interact great. Elizabeth Gillies is such a talent, she is an amazing actress and an even better (if that is possible) singer. Elaine Hendrix is great too and the smaller characters played by Robert Kelly and Joh Ales (Bam Bam & Rehab) are the funniest. I also love that you can actually get the music of the bands they play in the series is really on Itunes and Spotify under the name of the bands: The Assassins and The Heathens. Now it's just waiting for the Gigi & Assassins to produce an album and go on tour.
  • I AM a living example of the characters portrayed, so I know. Leary is excellent as usual, and Ava is right on target, for me the little digs, and comments the cast throw out about other actual current, and classic celebrities is spot on, and hysterical! Where the show falls short, is the casting of the band, and especially Gigi. While all characters are truly likable, Gigi just is not. Yes, she is an excellent singer, but her acting stinks. The character is far too obnoxious, conceited, not realistic, and not at all the personality ANY real aspiring singer I have ever known would have. When she finally for the 1st time tries to convey her fears just before her big debut, she falls very short of convincing, and bounces back to her obnoxious self in a matter of seconds. Great show, great concept, crappy choice of actress.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is a show I've been waiting for. Finally a funny, laugh out loud comedy has come to TV again. The premise of Leary being a washed up rock star is the perfect vehicle for his smart ass comedy to shine through again. But it is not only Leary who shine in this show, his choice of Elizabeth Gillies as his daughter, who is trying to break into the industry is perfect. Not only is she talented as an actress, but man, this girl can sing. Not some auto-tuned pop princess. As Joan Jett said "This girls gonna be huge. The music in the the show is good, old rock and roll, something that is sorely missing today. I also love the fact that they take to task the sorry state of the music industry today. Seeing 'Lady Gaga' dressed as a green pyramid caused me to actually spew my drink across the living room. The other actors compliment the leads very nicely, they actually seem like they were once rock stars now on the setting sun side of fame. And having rock royalty like Dave Grohl and Joan Jett doing cameos doesn't hurt. I hope this show goes on for a few more seasons, because this one is actually really good. Give it a watch. You won't regret it. Rock On!! \m/ \m/

    Warning: Spoilers
The first season of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is already near the end, but I have the feeling it just started. It is a great show with harsh, sometimes painfully true humor about family and music. The first season evolves about former rock star Johnny Rock who gets one more chance at fame when Gigi, the daughter he never knew he had, shows up. She wants to get Johnny's old band the Heathens back together, but she wants to be the lead singer herself. It turns out she is amazingly talented - and by the way so is actress/singer Elizabeth Gillies, who plays Gigi and performs all music live on the show. What follows is both a great look behind the scenes of a rock band and a very disturbed family. It is a fantastic combination of comedy and music and a bit of drama. All actors perform the music them self. As said Elizabeth Gillies turns out to be a true talent. The music in itself is very good too. Especially Gillies' songs are a gift to the ear. A very good find of FX. I am very excited to see what next season will bring.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Grant, the title informed viewers that the series would be laden with topics not for the clean minded. Yet, I feel the swearing damaged the series and overtook the music and the plot. Preferred Season 1 versus Season 2 as the latter was more about the S stuff rather than music, which naturally was enhanced by Elizabeth Gillies and to some extent, Denis Leary. The Beastcore sub plot was really boring.
  • Hilarious, very real as to how these type of people really are, as I am familiar.

Leary is fantastic but so is everybody else.

What I would give to write on this show, so so many avenues these characters could go down that would be funny as hell and heartwarming.

The hatred and love the band has for their leader, makes perfect sense in the genre.

Love the daughter, funny and so darn cute. John Corbett is great too. Great job people!

Oh, did I mention it is hilariously funny?
  • Eddie_weinbauer5 February 2016
I heard about this show, after reading a article about shows that got a second season+I like Denis Leary. But this is just boring.A washed out rock-star from the 60s is making a comeback as a songwriter for his daughter. They throw out a lot of references to famous people, and take a dig at some of them, but it just don't get off the ground.

The music is quite bad and boring, and the audience look like they are underpaid. The conflicts don't interest you neither does he characters

It lack the bitter neurotic angry Denis leary that we all know from his stand up acts. Her he walk, talks and looks like he's on prozac. He is just too mellow for my taste,I like him when he sarcastic bitter and angry.
  • Dear God I hope this show isn't getting canceled! It's a beautiful blend of comedy, drama & great music. Haven't laughed out loud to a sitcom since Seinfeld until this show came along.

I'm so sick of reality TV so it's refreshing to see that someone has taken the time to create a show using music as a platform to develop an interesting dynamic of characters and comedy.

And to the guy hating on this show due to the Irish potato famine and an island surrounded by fish: ITS A FICTITIOUS COMEDY, GET OVER IT! If that offends you, then Family Guy shouldn't even be aired!

Great music, Gillies & Leary have amazing father-daughter chemistry, Elaine Hendrix's performances blew me away, didn't know she could actually ACT....LOVE her in this show!

Hoping another season is soon to come!
  • omanny7 December 2019
Music, actors, the drama, the comedy 10!!! Enough said bring it back!!!!
  • Djibyman30 March 2019
    Warning: Spoilers
This is by far the best we've seen Denis Leary, this show had so much potential, and it only gets 2 seasons, what a waste, and to bad it doesn't get a satisfying end at least, i knew this when i started watching it, but it still saddens me.
  • This show makes me cringe... It's disrespectful and a disgrace to use such a title..

Poncy singing I would call popular ****

The show is best described as a couple of has been artists, a few lines

about drugs and a bit of booze coupled with poncy popular vocals in a

    23 minute time slot.

This is total disrespect to the real Rock 'N' Rollers, drug addicts and

booze freaks that make up the real world of rock 'n' roll..

I would suggest that the title that has been used was designed to suck people in..
