In mid-2017, Zendaya revealed in an issue of New York Times that she returned to Disney Channel after Shake It Up (2010) because of a lack of diversity at the time. She also thought the idea of a girl doing a "guy role" was important.

Jasmine Guy guest stars as K.C's evil aunt. She and Kadeem Hardison were husband and wife on A Different World (1987). In the scene where they meet, Jasmine Guy states he reminds her of someone she knew in college and quote "from a different world." Kadeem Hardison is then seen rocking his signature flip-up sunglasses from the show.
