Fantasia 2018: ‘Hurt’ Review
Stars: Emily van Raay, Andrew Creer, Michelle Treacy, Stephanie Moran, Bradley Hamilton | Written and Directed by Sonny Mallhi

A peaceful sky, wind in the trees, a ladybug sitting on a blade of wheat. Nothing happens in New Caney, Texas. On Halloween night, the picture-perfect Americana of this farming town is quiet, and remains undisturbed. Time moves painfully slowly. Rose sits by herself, smoking a cigarette, scaring the kids away. She wears a mask, like so many others that night. With her husband, freshly back from the war, Rose is off to the village’s annual horror show. Everything is fake – the scar, the red paper blood and the harness on the hanged woman. Only death is real. But the only way to tell you about death is to let you see it for yourself.

Sonny Mallhi is not the kind of filmmaker that has the same name recogntion as his peers,...

‘Hurt’ First Trailer: Blumhouse’s Newest Nightmare Takes on Trauma of Modern American Life
Every town has its traditions. For New Caney, Texas, those traditions include a Halloween-set “horror show” that encourages citizens to dress up in their most chilling holiday attire for…well, we’re guessing not just a fun, family-friendly time with neighbors. Sonny Mallhi’s newest film — and his second produced by indie horror powerhouse Blumhouse Productions — is set in New Caney during just such a time, and the film’s first teaser trailer makes it clear that this holiday will be one many will want to forget.

“Hurt” will premiere at Fantasia Fest, one of the world’s premiere genre festivals, on Thursday, July 26, and its official festival synopsis tantalizingly teases at what’s to come. “Lost in an atmosphere that is as disturbing and brutal as it is real, Mallhi’s characters evolve in a maze of confusion, anxiety and violence. The collective psychosis of American culture is an inescapable horror film,...

Film Review: Anguish
★★★★☆ The previous credits of Sonny Mallhi, directing for the first time with Anguish, may not have inspired much confidence. Co-producing the Oldboy remake and exec-producing The House at the End of the Street - the one Jennifer Lawrence film people are prepared to forget - will do that. Thankfully, Anguish is accomplished enough to make you excited for whatever Mallhi works on next. Having premièred in the UK at Glasgow's FrightFest in February, the film is about two disaffected Illinois teenagers with a paranormal link. Lucy (who insists on being called Lucinda) is the one tragically killed by a truck, and Tess (Ryan Simpkins) is the one moving to the same town, bearing a history of severe anxiety problems.

Glasgow FrightFest 2016 Review: Anguish Is Two Films In One Body
A mother Sarah (Karina Logue) and her teenaged daughter Lucy (Amberley Gridley) are out driving. "It's not fair!" complains Lucy, upset about the boundaries being imposed on her adolescent conduct. This leads Sarah to cite the traditional saying amongst the womenfolk in her family: "If your aunt had a moustache, she'd be your uncle." In anger, Lucy steps out of the car --- and right into the path of a passing truck. This prologue to Anguish lays out all the film's key themes: frayed mother-daughter relationships, the desire to cross forbidden boundaries, the fluid nature of identity (inscribed in that peculiar saying, repeated several times over the course of the film), and of course death. If Lucy's passing leaves a painful gap, then the subsequent...

Glasgow Frightfest: ‘Anguish’ Review
Stars: Ryan Simpkins, Annika Marks, Karina Logue, | Written and Directed by Sonny Mallhi

Sonny Mallhi is probably not a name on anyones horror radar, however Mallhi was the producer on films like The Strangers, House at the End of the Street and the fantastic 2014 Fightfest flick At the Devils Door (aka Home). With Anguish he turns his hand at not only writing (he previously penned the psycho-stalker films The Roommate and Crush) but directing. Now I mention all those other films because Mallhi’s work has been met with various degrees of success, both commercially and critically – so going into Anguish I had no idea what to expect. I did hope for something as stunningly scary as At the Devils Door, what we got is something akin more to The Roommate…

Apparently inspired by a true possession story (though the opening titles talk more about teenagers mental health than...

Poster and trailer for supernatural horror Anguish
Ahead of its UK premiere at Glasgow FrightFest this coming week, a new poster and trailer have arrived online for the upcoming supernatural horror Anguish; take a look here…

Teenage Tess has been suffering from anxiety ever since her mother Jessica discovered her banging her head against the wall when she was a child. On a steady diet of medication ever since, it becomes clear her dissociative identity disorder condition might not be necessarily psychological when they move to a small house in Texas and Tess begins experiencing hallucinations suggesting she’s more susceptible to spirits of the deceased. Especially ghost girl Lucy killed in a tragic accident and still being grieved for by her tormented mother. Eerie, jittery and surprisingly moving, Anguish is the creepiest and most resonant American independent horror since It Follows, showcasing a breakout performance by Ryan Simpkins (Twixt, Surveillance, Hangman) playing the withdrawn Tess.

Written and directed by Sonny Mullhi,...

Anguish Review
Within a matter of hours, Anguish went from an ambiguous horror title to one of my top horror films of the year. I do my best for you people, but with twenty-something movies releasing per week, a few are destined to fall through the cracks. Lucky for me, “Horror Film Twitter” made sure this heartfelt possession thriller didn’t get buried under J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars hoopla – and with proper reasoning. Rookie director Sonny Mallhi makes a statement with this tightly restrained, yet effectively creepy flick by focusing more on emotion than cheap, unnecessary scares. A good genre movie makes you feel something more than physical chills, and Anguish has that wonderfully uncomfortable feeling about it in the best of ways.

Mallhi sets his stage by introducing us to Lucy (Amberley Gridley) and her mother Sarah (Karina Logue), as they’re driving down a quiet highway. Sarah pulls the car...

Review: Anguish, Horrifying And Heartbreaking
Sonny Mallhi's directorial debut Anguish opens with Lucinda and her mom driving home. The conversation is strained, as conversations with budding teenagers tend to be. Shockingly, it is a conversation that comes to a tragic and sudden end. We then join Tess and her mother moving into their new home. Tess' father is deployed overseas so all the parenting duties fall onto Tess' mom. Tess takes many prescriptions to help with her day. Even at her young age, she has had a lengthy history of mental challenges. As she settles into her new surroundings, though, she begins to sense that she is not alone. Is it all in Tess' head, a symptom of her mental challenges? Or is someone on the other side trying to come back? Mallhi's...

Interview: Writer/Director Sonny Mallhi Talks Anguish and The Strangers 2
Writer and producer Sonny Mallhi has worked on several modern horror movies over the last few years, ensuring that other filmmakers’ terrifying visions were ultimately fulfilled. This weekend, Mallhi sees the theatrical and VOD release of his directorial debut, Anguish, which stars Ryan Simpkins as an embattled young woman possessed by the spirit of a restless spirit who still wants to remain amongst the living.

With an approach that feels a bit unconventional amongst its possession-themed peers, Daily Dead recently chatted with Mallhi about helming Anguish, the challenges of making a possession movie stand out in this day and age, working with the film’s young star, and his experiences heading back to his hometown of Lemont, Illinois to direct his first feature. Mallhi also briefly chatted about The Strangers 2 and the pressures that come with creating the sequel.

Look for Anguish in theaters and on VOD on December 18th,...

Fantasia Review: Anguish
Anguish is bold. It’s not a particularly transgressive or prodding horror film, but rather one that attempts (and succeeds) to be formally patient, terribly eerie and dramatically affecting all at once. Sonny Mallhi’s feature debut is a film which follows its characters’ frights and paranoia yes, but their emotional needs as well, striding into an…
