Karen Gillan was deeply moved by an early cut of The Life of Chuck. Gillan details the movie is told in a unique and imaginative way, offering a cathartic experience. Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's novella will likely be split into three acts, told in reverse chronological order.

As Netflix’s library of films ebbs and flows, finding the right movie to watch can feel like bailing out an ocean with a spoon. And if you’re looking for a quality horror movie in particular, the search only gets harder. With the reality that Horror is one of the cheapest genres to produce, streamers like Netflix are cluttered with a veritable tsunami of bloody titles that sometimes seem indistinguishable from one another.
If you’re looking for a good horror movie to watch on Netflix that will truly scare you, picking a final selection can prove a more daunting task than sitting through yet another “Haunting of Hill House” rewatch; with or without its beloved “Bly Manor” chaser. But while the streamer’s priorities seem to shift as quickly as its content selection grows, Netflix’s horror library remains a high point — with original triumphs, including Guillermo del Toro...

Mike Flanagan's impact on the horror genre is evident in the rise of popular films like Alone on Netflix. Similar to Flanagan's early work, Alone is a psychological thriller with a minimalist approach to create suspense. Fans of Flanagan's Hush will appreciate the similarities in plot and atmosphere found in the popular film Alone.
A currently popular Netflix thriller demonstrates how masterful the horror auteur Mike Flanagan is at his craft. Since making his film debuted in 2011 with Absentia, Mike Flanagan has emerged as one of the most prolific and influential creators in the modern horror genre. With critically acclaimed Netflix horror series such as The Haunting of Hill House (2018), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), Midnight Mass (2021), and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023), Flanagan has made a lasting impact on modern horror similar to Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story) and Ari Aster.

The horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein (you can read our review Here), which came to us from director Zelda Williams (making her feature directorial debut) and screenwriter Diablo Cody, just reached theatres on February 9th… and it hasn’t exactly been a smash, drawing just $9 million at the domestic box office so far. Maybe now it will be able to draw in more viewers, as they’re going to have the chance to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes: Universal Pictures has already given Lisa Frankenstein a digital release, and it’s available to watch through sites like Amazon.

Having written over 70 books and hundreds of short stories, Stephen King has provided the source material for dozens of movies over the past five decades. This has included classics like The Shining, Carrie, and Misery, contemporary hits like It and Gerald's Game, and a few infamous entries like Maximum Overdrive and The Lawnmower Man. Through this, King's name (both in film and literature) has largely become synonymous with horror. However, with such a vast list of publications and movie adaptations, though, the author's work is not exclusive to a single genre. In fact, his favorite movies based on his books aren't even horror.

Mike Flanagan has become perhaps the most recognizable name in horror working these days. He has delivered fantastic movies and series repeatedly. His work on Netflix is notorious with hits like The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor but that will soon change as his exclusivity deal has been switched to Prime Video. His movies, like Hush and Gerald's Game, also showed his skill with the genre, especially with Gerald's Game, based on the Stephen King novel that was said to be unfilmable. Only, one of his movies flew under the radar, even after his breakout hit on Netflix with Hush. Before I Wake was intended to be a theatrical release, but ended up in limbo for a while. It is one of Flanagan's more fantastical films, but the seeds of his future are seen in it. If you liked The Haunting of Hill House, you...

For a guy who writes about awful stuff happening to people, Stephen King sure likes liking things. Just think about how many times he’s used his position to praise other creatives and projects. “I have seen the future of horror and his name is Clive Barker,” declared his blurb for the American release of Books of Blood. “Tight, terrific, and very, very scary. Reminded me a bit of Duel,” he said of The Fall on Twitter in 2022. “Wish I’d written it.” Heck, his horror history book Danse Macabre ends with an appendix recommending over 100 books and nearly 100 movies.
But when the 76-year-old writer praises the upcoming film adaptation of his seminal novel Salem’s Lot , King’s word carries a bit more weight. In the 1980s, Stephen King was on top of the world. He burst onto the scene in the late 1970s with his debut novel "Carrie," and seemed to be unstoppable. His books were best sellers, and Hollywood came calling. The film adaptations weren't always well-received, and they weren't always box office hits, either. Eventually, King would get an idea in his head: what if he directed a film adaptation himself? Who better to adapt Stephen King than ... Stephen King?
Of course, there was a flaw in this logic: King didn't know the first thing about filmmaking. But how hard could it be? When mega-producer Dino De Laurentiis scooped up the rights to a film adaptation of King's short story "Trucks," the film's production designer, Giorgio Postiglione, told King that the famed author should be the one to direct the project. According to the book "Creepshows: The Illustrated Stephen King Movie Guide,...

I was already sold on checking out the horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, since it marks the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams and was scripted by Diablo Cody, but now a clip from the film has arrived online to give me an even more positive outlook on the movie. The clip can be seen in the embed above, and what makes me so happy about it is the fact that the 1985 classic Day of the Dead, one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite filmmakers (George A. Romero) is quickly glimpsed on a television in this scene. A comedic creature chase follows, but it’s the glimpse of Day of the Dead that I really love about the clip.

As moviegoers turn the calendar to February, one of the most anticipated films for genre fans is Lisa Frankenstein. The horror comedy, by writer Diablo Cody and first-time director Zelda Willams, features a star-studded cast lead by Kathryn Newton (Freaky) and Cole Sprouse (Riverdale). However, the former isn’t the only modern horror icon in this romantically twisted take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The film also has the incredible Carla Gugino (Gerald's Game). In the latest teaser for Lisa Frankenstein, fans are introduced to Gugino’s gleefully wicked character.

Carla Gugino, one of Mike Flanagan's frequent collaborators, has just teased conversations with the director for the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.
Mike Flanagan has several projects lined up, with some Stephen King adaptations. The director, who recently ended his deal with Netflix, will switch to Prime Video for his upcoming work. His first attempt at Stephen King's book series was poorly received by the critics and audience, despite its impressive cast that included Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Some horror properties naturally lend themselves to incessant sequels, while others seem to will themselves into existence through sheer will, as if they’re the result of a demonic possession. William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, while over 50 years old, is still considered to be one of the scariest movies of all-time. Various Exorcist sequels and even a two-season television series have materialized over time. However, none of these projects generated the same level of skepticism that accompanied Blumhouse’s announcement that they’d be producing not just a legacy sequel to Friedkin’s original film, but an entire trilogy, directed by David Gordon Green. Green had just pulled off a similar spectacle with his Halloween legacy sequel trilogy, yet Michael Myers’ slasher antics are much more conducive to this formula than repeated returns to The Exorcist’s MacNeils.

Carla Gugino is amazing. From her early days co-starring with Pauly Shore in Son-In-Law to indies with her partner Sebastian Gutierrez, including Electra Luxx and Women in Trouble, Gugino has shirked the traditional path many Hollywood actresses have taken. The result is a career full of unique work on the big screen and small including work with filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez, Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game), Zack Snyder, Ridley Scott (American Gangster), and more. Her series work with Mike Flanagan has included an array of roles in The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, as well as her recent turn in The Fall of the House of Usher, which garnered Gugino her first Critics Choice nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

In a world where superheroes, sequels, horror (thankfully) and anything IP related are king, it seems as though the risqué original thriller has gone by the wayside. Over the past ten years or so you’d be hard pressed to find anything other than The Invisible Man, You Should Have Left, Gerald’s Game, Gone Girl, or Knock, Knock that really fit the mold (albeit with some finagling) and each of those is either tied to popular literature or skews closer to the horror genre.
But the original thriller thrived in the 1990s. Also thriving during this beautiful time in Hollywood were action movies featuring two adversaries face to face on the poster and/or movie cover. Movies like Face/Off, Point Break, Demolition Man, Universal Soldier, and Broken Arrow. 1992’s Unlawful Entry combines both of these elements with two heaping sides of the stalker and slasher horror subgenres. She’s got a disaster movie in San Andreas, loads of family-friendly adventure films including Race to Witch Mountain, Night at the Museum, and the Spy Kids movies, and she’s currently soaring in the horror space with projects like Gerald’s Game and The Haunting of Hill House. We’d be here all day if I listed everything, but do give her lengthy filmography a quick scan. I’d be willing to bet that in almost all cases, consecutive projects fall in different genres.

Bruce Greenwood was praised for his performance in the recasting of Roderick Usher in The Fall of the House of Usher after Frank Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation. The original actor's behavior on set caused hurt and discomfort among cast members, leading to a significant amount of reshooting scenes. Greenwood's arrival brought a sense of relief and professionalism to the set, solidifying the belief that artists can be good people and still excel in their roles.
Nearly two years after he was fired from the show, Kate Siegel reflects on Frank Langella's infamous The Fall of the House of Usher recasting. The Oscar nominee was originally cast for Mike Flanagan's final Netflix project as Roderick Usher, the patriarch of the titular family whose past deal with the mysterious Verna helped them rise to wealth, though is now coming back to claim them all. Mike Flanagan's Netflix show, The Haunting of Hill House, includes a chilling twist that draws inspiration from the indie horror film, Lake Mungo. The twist in The Haunting of Hill House reveals that the character Nell was the "Bent-Neck Lady" all along, similar to the twist in Lake Mungo where Alice sees her own ghost before drowning. Lake Mungo has also inspired other acclaimed horror filmmakers, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who created Something in the Dirt using a similar pseudo-documentary style.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Oculus and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Of all the horror creators currently working in the business, few have the ability to tear at our heartstrings like Mike Flanagan. Beginning with the 2018 hit miniseries The Haunting of Hill House, the director’s horrific Netflix shows are just as likely to elicit cathartic sobs as hysterical screams. However, with a cast of unlikeable characters and a cavalcade of grisly deaths, Flanagan’s newest series The Fall of the House of Usher may signal a return to the grim horror of his early career. Films like Absentia, Hush, and Ouija: Original of Evil all center harsh and unforgiving stories – a gut punch rather than a bittersweet embrace. Perhaps the cruelest of these is Oculus, the 2013 story of a haunted mirror. Ten years after its premiere, this nihilistic movie still feels like a lean...

Henry Thomas, a frequent collaborator of Mike Flanagan, expressed his interest in joining the upcoming Dark Tower television adaptation. The Dark Tower has a complicated adaptation history, with the 2017 film receiving negative reactions despite a talented cast. The upcoming television series adaptation of The Dark Tower has generated a lot of interest, thanks to the reputation of Stephen King's works and Mike Flanagan's involvement.
One of Mike Flanagan's most frequent collaborators wants to join the upcoming Dark Tower adaptation. The first attempt at adapting Stephen King's Dark Tower was met with sharply negative reactions from both critics and audiences when it was released in 2017 despite an impressive cast that included Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. More recently, in December 2022, The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan shared that he'd acquired the rights to develop a television series show on the books, with plans for multiple seasons and movies.

Mike Flanagan is returning to producing for his next movie, a role he hasn't had since his directorial debut Absentia. Flanagan has successfully adapted many Stephen King novels into acclaimed movies, including Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. The Life of Chuck will be Flanagan's first movie as a producer since 2011, making it a potentially very personal film for him.
Mike Flanagan's next Stephen King adaptation will see him step back into a role he hasn't taken since his directorial debut. Alongside filmmakers like James Wan, Flanagan has emerged as one of the best horror movie directors of his generation. Mike Flanagan's movies and TV shows are often intensely emotional, but they always deliver on the scares too. He's also noted for his love of Stephen King and managed the seemingly impossible when he turned the author's "unfilmable" novel Gerald's Game into an acclaimed Netflix movie.

The original cut of the baseball boy scene in Doctor Sleep was even more gruesome and violent than what was shown in the final version. Stephen King, the author of The Shining, demanded that the violence in the scene be toned down, as he felt it was too brutal. The final cut of the baseball boy death scene was already disturbing enough, and the cast agreed that toning it down was the right decision, as actor Jacob Tremblay's performance was enough to carry the impact.
The Doctor Sleep baseball boy scene was the most brutal of the movie, but the original cut was even worse. Directed by Mike Flanagan, the 2019 sequel to The Shining is based on the book of the same name by Stephen King. Ewan McGregor stars as Dan Torrance, having grown since his experiences at the Overlook Hotel and working to protect children with similar gifts...

Mike Flanagan is becoming a fan-favorite of the horror genre community. His shows and movies have reinvigorated horror fandom. Flanagan's time at Netflix paved the way for some of the best horror media to date. His latest series, The Fall of The House of Usher, is his scariest yet.
The Fall of The House of Usher is loosely based on a set of Edgar Allan Poe short stories. While spooky tales, they are admittedly dated to their era. Flanagan wisely changes the setting for modern audiences. The Fall of The House of Usher's characters are loosely based on a wealthy family that runs a large corporation. In other words, they are all playing incredibly damaged and evil people.
Flanagan Is Making a Statement
Our leading family in the series is known as the Ushers. They have reached a level of fame and status that makes them untouchable to the public.

Some actors are born to play villains, and Bruce Greenwood is one of them. He's crafted some chilling characters across his filmography — particularly when he works with Mike Flanagan. Flanagan has proven himself to be quite the effective voice in horror — particularly when it comes to adapting the works of Stephen King — and Greenwood has played a large part in nearly all of Flanagan's work. Whether it's a corrupt pharmaceutical executive who reaps the bitter harvest of his actions on The Fall of the House of Usher or a ghost who torments his chained-up wife in Gerald's Game, Greenwood excels at playing men who lack a certain moral fiber.

During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Stephen King and Mike Flanagan both have personal experiences with addiction, which adds depth and authenticity to their storytelling. Religion is a recurring theme in King's works, and Flanagan's adaptation of Midnight Mass explores religious trauma and the dark side of faith. Flanagan's personal connection to King's stories allows him to bring depth and understanding to the characters and themes in his adaptations.
Stephen King has had his works adapted for decades and even written screenplays himself, but his movie and TV adaptations have always been on extremes of hit or miss. While Stanley Kubrick's The Shining has become an icon in horror films, King himself hated this version, preferring the TV miniseries from 1997. When Mike Flanagan directed Gerald's Game for Netflix in 2017, a beautiful pairing of creatives happened. Flanagan seemed to understand the elements King put into his writing and bring those with him onto the screen instead of only the story.

Director Mike Flanagan has completed filming his latest movie, The Life of Chuck, which is based on a story by Stephen King. The film features a talented cast including Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Jacob Tremblay, Matthew Lillard, Harvey Guillén, and David Dastmalchian. Mike Flanagan's horror projects feature bone-chilling villains that contribute to his success as a prominent horror auteur. The villains in Flanagan's stories are often more than just single persons or creatures, but they still serve as driving forces for the protagonists' twisted journeys. While some of Flanagan's villains have memorable and dangerous qualities, their fear factor may be limited by their backstory, appearance, or vulnerability, which impacts their overall scariness.

2017 was awash with Stephen King film adaptations, from the fantasy western thriller The Dark Tower to the enormously successful It. One film, however, managed to slip through the cracks. Released quietly and with little fanfare, Mike Flanagan's Gerald's Game seemed to materialize on Netflix three years ago, remaining largely unseen ever since.
The epitome of a hidden gem, Gerald's Game is a psychological horror centering around protagonist Jessie, played by the phenomenal Carla Gugino. In an effort to rekindle their relationship, Jessie and her husband, Gerald (Bruce Greenwood), travel to an isolated cottage followed by some handcuff play that goes catastrophically wrong, leaving Jessie alone and trapped, handcuffed to a bed and without much hope of escape.
While this premise may sound somewhat limiting at first, it is anything but. Staying true to King’s original concept, Jessie is joined by two imaginary figures for the duration of her time in the cottage,...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and the works of Edgar Allen Poe.
In recent years, Mike Flanagan has become known for emotional adaptations of classic horror literature. After a series of original films, Flanagan brought Stephen King’s famously unfilmable novel Gerald’s Game to life then set his sights on the work of Shirley Jackson. His Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House dramatically expanded the legendary story and brought us all to tears with an intimate examination of parenting through the years. Flanagan followed this with The Haunting of Bly Manor, a mind-bending take on The Turn of the Screw, and The Midnight Club, a spooky mashup of Christopher Pike’s YA bibliography.
