  • 7.75 of 10. Stylistically and in terms of the quality of animation and imagery, one of the best recent cartoon films. The story is pure fantasy and works as sort of new a fairy tale clearly for children but with various themes that make it enjoyable for everyone in a family and certainly safe enough for kids to enjoy alone.

The deeper messages of the story involve the complexity of the universe and the benefits of working positively with one another as opposed to alone with minions doing your bidding under the threat of your power. The other ongoing message is a softened version of curiosity killing the cat. Curiosity here is both good and can get you into serious trouble, as can over confidence, arrogance, and too much power.

The story and cartoon is all woven together, as is the cartoon within the cartoon. It also makes beautiful use of new voice actors as opposed to relying on stars. It deserves to catch on as an underground classic that the critics and production corporations failed to identify and properly distribute.
  • It is so refreshing to find an original story beautifully and simply told without being overblown. It avoids many of the Disney clichés with regards to evil villains who are simply "boo" fodder, sidekicks who are there only to provide comedy relief etc. Instead we have characters who are flawed rather than being simply good or bad. It is almost Zeussian in its weirdness, but the fantasy all adds to its gentle charm.
  • Animation - All around the animation in this movie is just beautiful. All the different visuals and ideas in this movie are just wonderful. This is worth watching just for the appearance alone.

Story - This is a movie that is full of brilliant concepts, but they don't all tie into each other very well. The pacing is all over the place. Maybe if the movie was longer or had a better script it could've worked better. The only version I could find was with the English dub, and not the original though. Maybe some of it is more interesting in the original and maybe the story flows smoother, but based on the length of scenes I doubt it. The story isn't terrible, just a bit disjointed and generic at times.

Characters - This movie is a bit light on the character development. It probably could've spent more time on developing any of the characters. Honestly one of the biggest problems with this movie is that it is way too short.

Glim - (this bit might contain spoilers) Glim is a character whose concept is more interesting than her personality. She is a person made of candle wax that melts when too hot and freezes when too cold. Its kind of a cool idea. The problem is, she is completely unnecessary. Glim combines two of the tropes I hate the most - completely bland an unnecessary love interest, and the fake-out death. She could've been removed from the story completely (along with those "comic relief" demon things) and nothing would've been changed. The only reason I can see for why she is in the movie is so that there is a female character. If the movie really needed a female character though then why not make one of the guardians a girl?
  • There's something nice about being able to pull up Netflix and stumble upon little films that I would have otherwise never heard of. This one in particular had caught my eye a while back, so I finally got around to watching it, and for the most part, I enjoyed what I saw. From the thumbnail and synopsis, I expected that the movie would have some nice visuals and a bland story; to my pleasant surprise, it did have both of those but also had a heaping ton of imagination and creativity.

Mune's strongest point has got to be the world it takes place in: this place is completely alien to our own and yet is entirely believable. The film features such a thorough world and mythology that I assumed it was based on an existing TV or book series, but it is in fact a completely original story. I won't go into detail on what all it is about, as discovering each little feature along the way is a wonderful experience.

The movie is originally in French, but Netflix's English dub is seamless, and this in no way feels like a foreign film. I'd also like to point out that the score was written by Bruno Coulais, who also scored Coraline and Song of the Sea.

Aside from the strengths I pointed out, though, Mune is fairly generic. The story beats and characters are what you'd expect for this sort of movie. Although I did enjoy Nicole Provost's spirited performance as Glim, the voice cast is for the most part nothing special. There's a mischievous guy who's unsure of himself, an arrogant dude who learns to help people, etc., and each character sounds the part without adding anything special.

With that said, I would like more movies in a future franchise to see how they expand on and dive into all that they've set up. If there aren't any sequels, though, I'll still be able to remember Mune as a happy little accident I had while browsing Netflix.
  • Mune was a visually stunning adventure of epic scale. Set in a whimsical world, the sun and moon are controlled by their respective guardians. As the time comes for new guardians to be selected, the boasting and brawny Sohone is selected as the new guardian of the sun. In an odd twist of fate, the reluctant Mune is selected as new guardian of the moon. This film features a very beautiful world, filled with all kind of creatures and fauna. Both the day-dwelling and night- dwelling creatures are very distinct, building a very rich, interesting world. The story is very easy to follow and features a huge cast of distinct, interesting characters. We see practically every corner of this vast world, from the bright, stony land of the day-dwellers to the luscious forests the night-dwelling creatures live in. It's very clear that a colossal amount of creativity was put into this film, and it offers a fantastic visual experience. What definitely surprised me most about this film is that it features several scenes rendered in 2D animation. It is a style you see very little of in mainstream animated films, and was a nice change indeed. This is a great movie for animation buffs like me, and those who love whimsical adventures as much as their children.

This was such a unique movie, and I really appreciated it for that, but on the other hand, it was so unique that there's no way I could have gotten some of my family to sit through it. It's almost too slow and complex for young children, so I'm not sure who the target audience really was. It was like watching art in motion. It was refreshingly different. I'd recommend it to people, but I can't say it's become a favorite.
  • This movie is straight up eye candy, right up there with Disney & Pixar productions. I watched Mune with my 4 year old and was instantly drawn to the beautiful animations. There were major Salvador Dali & Hayao Miyazaki influences in this dream world. I really can't praise the animators enough for the beauty they created in this film The story was lovely, despite some of the characters falling into cliche stereotypes (looking at you Sohone)

This is a movie I would've loved to have seen as a kid and I am really glad I was able to enjoy it with my own child. Highly recommended for families to watch together, just know that there are some scary scenes so be prepared to reassure sensitive children that the good guys will overcome the bad ones.
  • When I first watched Mune with my children, the visuals were immediately intriguing. It called to mind the likes of Kubo and the Two Strings. The premise is fascinating; this world and its inhabitants declare a guardian got both the sun and the moon that ride upon their prospective temples, bringing balance to the world.

The pace shifts gears from wondrous, to slightly frightening, to moments of humor, but all without a natural flow. This doesn't hurt the movie as a whole, but can mean you're watching a part, turn your head for a moment, them something else is happening that may feel unrelated to what you just saw.

Do watch this for the visual styles alone, it's a frequent watch in our home.
  • Wonderful, Charming, Cheeky and lots of Heart for the Whole family, in the Ghibli story telling tradition and imagery.

It has a blend of 3D animation and 2D dream sequences...

It seems like a fairytale you should know but have forgotten. And thats the pity, the story telling is great, the animation is lovely and English voice actors did a great job.

It's the story of the Sun and the Moon, and the Guardians that protect them.

This animated feature deserves an Audience. Do yourself a favour and grab it
  • This is a rather interesting movie. Everything about this movie is either incredible and creative or bland and forgettable. First, the good. The world it's set in is beautiful and creative. It's kind of like a mix of James Cameron's Avatar and Breath of the Wild, only not as much as either of those. It has the diverse array of fascinating creatures like Avatar, and the monolithic guardians and scale of Breath of the Wild. Actually, the more I think about, the more it seems like a lost Zelda game. (for the record, this came out before BotW). The idea of having the large creatures pulling the Sun and Moon on their paths was interesting, and actually quite beautiful. Some of the creatures are fascinating, like Glim and the candle-people. Even aside from them, the character designs are very creative. The way it alters between 3D and classic hand-drawn animation is always welcome, as it is done very well. The dream world, while a concept done in movies before, was done very well here, especially how the visuals contrasted with the real world.

And, the bad. Remember that beautiful world? It doesn't have a name. May as well call it Pandora. Second: the characters. There's Mune himself, the guy who stumbles into a great quest and becomes the hero by the end, Shohone, the hotshot, Glim, the love interest, and Necross, the generic big bad. These are characters that could have been copy-pasted out of any Disney first draft. They're not interesting at all. Possibly the worst examples are Necross' lackeys. They're exactly like Pain and Panic from Disney's Hercules. They even look like them. The story is also not as interesting as it could have been, given the creativity of the premise. It's a bland story where the new guy comes in and proves his worth against the doubters and other evildoers. All in all, this is quite the mixed bag. Does the good outweigh the bad? I'd call it even. It definitely gets points for creativity.

I watch a lot of movies, and most of them are fairly forgettable. So I was surprised to find that this obscure film was so fantastic. When I saw it on the shelf I thought it would be one of those horrible cut rate movies from some off brand studio. How wrong I was. This movie is of a different flavor and style than what you would see from the Hollywood giants, and that is a good thing. It has the most unique take on cgi animation I've ever seen. Rather than having the bland digital perfection of the style you see coming from Pixar, Blue Sky, Dreamworks, Illumination, Warner Brothers, Sony Animation, etc... this film has a more painterly look. The world building is so magical and memorable. The character designs are great! The only downside is that you can tell the dialogue has lost something in translation and the voice performances are as average as they come, and some are miscast. Other than that this has found it's place on my top ten list of animated films. Highly reccomendend!
  • Warning: Spoilers
While the plot is honestly frankly formulaic (With the typical story of the underdog misfit hero who ends saving the day, the dumb jock bully and the girl who only exist to be the love interest, and even some Minion-esque characters), the stylish visuals are good enough reason to watch this movie

Unlike many other similar titles, Mune: Guardian of the Moon takes full-advantage of its medium, taking place in a world totally impossible to replicate in live-action, featuring plenty of whimsical creatures.

Many films by the big studios could learn a thing or two from this film, at least from the visual standpoint.
  • As I watched, I imagined what the directors could have done with an even 2nd-rate script.

The concept was very cool, and the imagery was inspiring.

The script was unacceptably lazy. Cliche, one-dimensional characters-unappologetically cherry picked from various other cartoons-and painfully boring dialogue ruin the experience.

The opening scene that sets up the world is so original. Then you meet the first character, and you're immediately like... ahhh damn, this is gonna be stupid.... and you'd be right.

A novel layer of CGI essentially attempts to disguise the blatant lack of narrative and story-telling.

    Real shame.
  • The design is nice, although not very well thought. The dream sequences for example are badly done and not in sync with the quality of the rest of the product.

The story itself is ugly. Honor killings, blind obedience, self sacrifice, the most radical of the Muslim fundamentalists couldn't have add anything to it. Add to this the unpleasant gender roles and it becomes a bad example. Now add that the characters are badly conceived like the main character is at the same time a child, a fearless fighter and a male ready to be wed, hence three characters in one body, and no thank you.
  • It's a cool movie and I love imagining a place where the Moon and Sun live side-by-side and I love the love story. And I love finding your destiny and knowing you are something you're fine you are the one. It's pretty cool movie but I hate seeing bad parts and how jealousy and anger can get the best of you and the whole dead and weird parts that's why I give it a 7 out of 10.
  • Found 'Mune: Guardian of the Moon' in HMV a week ago and only got round to watching it a couple of days ago, as a hopeful remedy from having stumbled upon and watched a number of badly done animated films. The film actually looked and sounded good, so expectations were hopeful.

Expectations that were not just met but exceeded. 'Mune: Guardian of the Moon' stands out as one of the better animated films seen recently by quite a considerable distance, of the animated films seen in the past week it is one of the best looking and is also one of the most thought-provoking and entertaining. Perhaps the still very charming and touchingly sweet romance was not as necessary as it could have been and Sohone's frequent comments on girls and ladies are tiresomely repetitive and will induce their fair share of cringes and eye-rolls (for a film with so much heart these distracted somewhat).

However, the animation is incredible. Not in a long time in animation has there been a more wondrously and imaginatively rendered world, which makes it as easy as pie to get properly immersed in and be transported. The colours are truly a feast on the eyes, everything is very smoothly designed and the backgrounds and details, from the little things all the way up to the big effects, will amaze anyone with the richness and depth of the detail.

There is a great music score too, capturing the whimsy, ethereal sparkle and mystery of the story and world effortlessly. The writing does a fine job of not only entertaining but also intriguing. There's plenty for the whole family, regardless of age and gender, to be amused and charmed at, while there is a surprising amount of sincere depth here which gives 'Mune: Guardian of the Moon' a refreshingly unexpected amount of heart.

Story-wise, 'Mune: Guardian of the Moon' is remarkably complex while with enough simplicity to not lose younger children. Older children and adults will be amazed at the story and world's individual complexity while still making sense and treating its audience with respect. There is plenty of imagination here and the positive messaging makes its point but with more subtlety and tact than most films incorporating similar messaging. While there is a lot of style here, there is also a lot of heart.

'Mune: Guardians of the Moon' excels with its characters too. While not complex as such, these characters are both interesting and likable. The chemistry between Mune and Glim is very charming. The voice acting is very good and dynamic.

In summary, luminous and beautiful, a refreshing much-needed antidote. 8/10 Bethany Cox

A fun, little animated film where the sun and moon both need protecting and their guardians are not exactly up to the job at first. However fast forward a bit and they've started to work together to fix their mistakes along with the help of a very pretty candle girl who also happens to know kore about the guardians duties then they do themselves.

Mune Guardian Of The Moon is a enjoyable animated film without any of the usual crap that makes so many movies nowadays just utter garbage. I watched the film, I enjoyed the film for what it was, the storyline, animation and voice acting were all good and it deserves the 7/10 I'm giving it.

A enjoyable movie to be watched for all generations. The animation it self was magnificent, well drawn, well done, the scenery was beautiful, characters well written, actors done their job, story well written, and the hook was there - for you to watch from the beginning 'till the end.

Clearly a message hidden to be learned. The movie satisfies all criteria that are necessary for a movie to be loved, cared and watched. A fairy tail, where everyone enjoys watching it. Not to much cheesy lines.

A creation of a movie that is worth watching, be you are a kid or a grown man. I gave it a 9, usually don't do that, but this time it earned it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
On this planet, new guardians of the sun and moon are being named. The person who was supposed to guard the moon was passed over for Mune. The dark underworld lord steals the sun and the moon to create darkness and chaos, something we really don't see. The two guardians and well as a pretty wax candle who lives in the twilight travel to the underworld to rescue the sun and moon (which is always a crescent, i.e. horned).

The film is loosely based on old world mythology. The sun god was strong, boastful, liked women, etc. Like Samson of the Old Testament. The moon god, who is given special calming powers, becomes the consort of Venus, who in this case is our twilight person. I love the old world aspect of the film, although the plot and scenes were snoozers. The characters were shallow.

I watched the film in English. Used the phrase "damn right." The film currently holds a 7.8 IMDB rating (equals solid 4 Amazon stars) and has won 2 international awards. To me this is one of the film that has all the right symbolic elements so you are supposed to like it irregardless that the entertainment value (how I grade films) is lacking. Makes for neat merchandising products...what did I do with my candles.
  • The story is pretty standard as far as children's movies go. You can pretty much tell within the first few minutes of the movie how things are going to go down. Despite that it's still a fun ride than my children and I enjoyed and there were a few pleasant surprises along the way. The world the story is set in and the delivery of the plot is also unique enough to keep it interesting enough to watch without groaning at the predictability. In any case, the predictability isn't necessarily bad as it is a kids' movie and teaches good enough morals; believe in yourself to unlock your true potential, do not be arrogant, do not belittle others, keep the company of those who bring out the best in you, help others--these are all great lessons for kids.

The animation though--wow! I really loved it. I especially loved the use of different animation mediums to create a different feel and experience during various parts in the movie it worked very well in my opinion. The art style was very cute too but the use of colour was very artfully done. There are so many little details the artists really didn't have to add, but I'm glad they did.

A new family favorite? I'm not sure. I think I would watch this again just to be transported to this beautiful world. I am going to be on the look out for more animation from these creators.
  • A standard collection of cliché characters (featuring Smart Girl, Awkward Boy, Arrogant Man, Sneaky Man and fearful, judgmental parents) are immersed in a kooky fairy tale world and given kooky fairy bodies. The computer graphics are passable but extra colorful, and the storyline is cobbled together from a random series of errors, without meaning or pathos. It's creepy enough to frighten sensitive children, it's freaky enough to disorient guileless children, and irrational enough to unbalance sensible children. The dreary jumble of scatterbrained and foolish scenes are not worth the effort it would take to stitch this puerile mass into a workable mythology. This movie demonstrate that dressing up a boilerplate teen movie with bizarre CGI cannot save it. This is why Pixar movies are so beloved; they drench their movies with plot. The creators of Mune, so intent on blowing the minds of kids with today's state-of-the-art CGI, skimped on plot. Thus, we are left with another forgettable art project, and as the state-of-the-art CGI advances there will be nothing of value left at all.
  • "Why try to take the Sun back?" "e...To impress the ladies."

--In my opinion, this is the typical French romance.

The film without luxuriant CG special effects, Just rely on the simple and even sketch drawing style, Make the audience into the magic world of the film build. And all this is by the imagination of the script.

In my mind,There are the two films is also like this as a core value of imagination,"Monsters,Inc.(2001)"and"Inside Out (2015)".Of course,"Inside Out"apparently more profound.and this film is suitable for children under the age of 12.

Given the Monsters,Inc. the score of 8.1, and I think to 7.8 is relatively appropriate for "Mune".

A very sweet and full plot with creative characters, and scenes. Absolutely gorgeously animated. Without a doubt a wonderfully told story.
  • France is only next to the Hollywood when it comes to the 3D animation. Not sufficient films were made in this format, but still the quality and creativity are laudable. When I saw one of this film's poster, not just for me, but anybody would think of the Na'vi from 'Avatar'. That's a misconception, only until you watch this film. Because it was totally different and awesome. Directed by two not very well known filmmakers, but their firsthand experience prior to this might have helped them for this project.

Like in any animation films, this tale takes place in a fictional world. The story of legends of the guardians of the sun and moon. Both of those heavenly bodies were created and guarded by ancestors for generations of the two races to keep the planet in peace and harmony. A youngster named Mune, from the night world was accidentally chosen as the keeper of the moon during the ceremony to hand over the guardianship. While it was a successful in power transfer on the day world to another youngster, Sohone.

The two youngsters eager to dedicate their lives to keep the order of the ancient practice. On his first day of duty, Mune messes up everything, followed by Necross, from the darkness who hidden underground for the centuries tries to bring chaos. Now, a girl who lives on the border of the day and the night joins those two to a quest to retrieve what is lost. Facing a tough challenge by an evil opponent, these three has to do impossibles. Meanwhile, it is an opportunity for them to prove themselves to their capabilities.

The creativity was brilliant. Those characters, settings, story and its developments, so genuinely done. Not just Disney or Pixar, totally Hollywood got a close competition here. Quality films like this, 'The Little Prince' and 'Asterix', can help to grow French animation industry faster and to the standards. Especially this film was short and sweet. Despite a beautiful imaginary world, the storyline was pretty much clichéd, like the same old formula applied to a bunch of new characters.

"What? You think adventure is to fly a unicorn! And to go with the elves? Bad news! We do not live in a fairy tale."

I mean like any fantasy film, there's always something bad happens in the opening and the remaining is trying to resolve it, which are mostly a lifetime journey for them. We know that as an outline, but not in the pictures, so that's why we watch it. There's also nothing wrong in that, but how smartly the film narrates its story remain pivotal to calculate its success and according to me it fared so well. I hope you would think it that way as well after watching it.

Very much a kids film, but I don't see a reason why grown ups should avoid it. In fact, this kind of stories are created by the adults with their imagination and that is not easily done work. You can compare it to our real world. Like how different races can live together peacefully. Besides, between two worlds, there's also a thin world exist that separates these two worlds, as well as unifies. As much you enjoy watching it, you will admire what they are doing and for why. Such an inspiration, particularly for the children.

The parts of the film were comparable with other popular animations around the world, but not entirely, only the small portions. Maybe because of creative common, but I think the writers had done an incredible job with the screenplay, especially when there's no original source like perhaps a book. I watched it a little late, but the point is I did not miss it. I laid my eyes on it a very long ago, but could not get the right time till now.

It's a great relief, moreover, I loved it. Well composed music, the background score was perfectly matched with the visuals which so colourful and attractive. The film also won a couple of international awards. I hope they make a sequel for this. Usual that does not happen in French animation, also the box office result is not in its favour. I think it is slightly an under-appreciated, but definitely an under-recognised film. So it needs your support, if you're an animation fan, you should try it. It was just like another Hollywood film, but was in the French Language. I say go for it!

    8/10
